ne thing is certain when Leesburgresident Jim Moody is on stage:the audience is either laughinghysterically or simply in awe.

Jim has the perfect form ofentertainment. He combines magic and illusion foryour mind and comedy for your funny bone.

You can rest assured he- has plenty of tricks andone-liners up his sleeve when he steps on stage. Here'sa sampling of his acts that get the crowd going. Heasks them, "Has anybody been to the race track lately?I've got a "hot" tip for you." As he's saying that, heopens a black book that ignites in a small flame.

Here's another funny gig. "I got mugged on the wayhere and got a speeding ticket. And I lost my bowlingball." He grabs a flat brief case, opens it and pulls out ared bowling bal!. That draws plenty of 'oohs' and 'ahs'from the audience. "Thank God I've been looking allover for this thing!"

Sometimes, he enjoys good-natured fun withthose in attendance. POinting to a particular table ofonlookers, he asks, "Has anyone ever seen a pictureof The Last Supper? Look at this crowd right overhere." Smiles form across the people sitting there. Jimproceeds, "How are you all doing? Good? We're notkeeping you up are we?"

In a different show, he pointed to a couple inthe audience and asked, "Are you two together? I'vealways wondered what a computer date looks like!"The crowd laughs.

Jim, a resident of Royal Highlands, has been amagician for 44 years. A native of St. Louis, Mo., he

became enthralled with magic as a small boy when hisgrandmother took him to see The Great Blackstone(Harry Blackstone) at the old American Theater inSt. Louis. The rest, as they say, is history.

He has spent his career performing at nightclubs, theaters, resorts, ships, trade shows, malls, riverboats, retirement communities and corporate functionsthroughout the country. He has made appearanceswith notable stars such as Tammy Wynette, RegisPhilbin, Tina Turner and Ray Charles.

Jim, who is known as 'The Crowd Teaser,'describes himself as a "magicornedian," meaning he'sa magician, entertainer and comedian all rolled intoone. His high-energy shows typically last between 45-

50 minutes."When I come off a show I have an incredible

high," he said. "My adrenaline is just pumping. Ialways want to be in top form, and therefore I nevereat before a show because otherwise I'd feel tiredand sluggish."

Of course, while his comedy is hilarious, he ktillknows plenty of tricks using linking coat hangers, cards and rope. Inside his home are nearly 1,000magic books. Just don't expect him to share lanysecrets. "As a magician you take an oath of secrecy,"he said. "Even though I'm a magician I don't askother magicians how to do something. It's not that Iwant to be secretive but if people know how certaintricks are done they lose their entertainmentvalue."

Jim's ability to turn a stage into a whirlwind offun and mystery has earned him several prestigious

honors. He has won first place in magician competitions hosted bythe Society of American Magicians and International Brotherhoodof Magicians. And his nickname 'The Crowd Teaser' was born froma rave review. "I was looking through old newspaper articles, and Idiscovered that a critic had referred to me as a real crowd pleaser.Since I like to tease people a lot, I figured I'd start calling myself TheCrowd Teaser. After all I like a lot of gags and one-liners."

Today Jim is president of the Lake County Magic Association, which boasts 30 members. He performs between 150-200 shows ayear. He not only performs with flair; he also dresses with flair. Expecthim to don a different outfit or tuxedo with each performance. "Ialways want to be better dressed than the audience," he said.

Jim handles most of his bookings while Linda, his wife of 44 years,is in charge of handling paperwork and other behind-the-scenes jobs. She often accompanies him to shows, and is his most supportive fanand harshest critic.

"It can be both fun and boring to travel with him," she said. "Theboring part is waiting. The fun parr is seeing the different reactionshe gets from different audiences .• :.

West Towne Mall Presents:

. The bit is just part of thefun in the modest. production

.of vaudeville being offeredFridays and Saturdays at thedinner theater: Others in theshow are Jim Moody, comicmagician; Albert (Peanuts)

. Butler, comic singer, andSkip Matthews, comic comic.

Moody is pretty good in thesleight-of-hand department, but he doesn't depend on thatto keep the attention of theaudience.

On one trick, he turned tothe crowd and said, "1 seefrom your lack of applause, you're dumbfounded." .

"It's hard for. me to keepup with the times," he admit-ted. "Like 1 was invited to apot party, and I brought alongTup~.rware."

Jim Moody is a sleight-of-hand artist. He's mixing out-of-the-sleeve magic with off-the-cuff comedy, whichmakes them bnth better.

"We're going to have agood time," he said, "as soonas we get this' show out of theway."

Then he invited a man outof the audience to pick hispocket. .

"Not too much applause,"he pleaded. "This is an oldboat."

A card trick that had ev-eryone amazed brought. thisresponse, "I don't know whatto say. I've never been thismagnificent before:"

One trick did not get theresponse he had hoped for.Shrugging, he said, "Now I'mgoing to do an incrediblething. I'm going to continue."

Might as well, the crowdsure liked him.

"Jim Moody"The sleight-of-hand artistry of

"Sir James" will be the featuredevent on the Mall at East Towne, during the Mall's BIG "JulyClearance" event, July.7th-lOth,1977.

"Sir James," alias Jim Moody,is from St. Louis, Missouri and atone time was the ,"White Tie andTails" sort of magician. Heworked with birds, cards and allthe usual apparata that a magiciankeeps in his bag of tricks. Jim soondiscovered that although other

magicians enjoyed his sleight ofhand, employers and agents werehesitant to sign him up. So Jimsold his doves and put together anact that needles spectators, uses 'some magic illusions and dealswith out-and-out larceny.Since the change in the showformat, Sir James has been keptbusy playing nightclubs, conventions, banquets, tradeshows and the newest circuit, thenation's shopping centers.

Moody IS hesitant whenspeaking about the details of hisshow and about how he hasdeveloped his art of being a"pickpocket." Moody says, "Afterall, someone else might use itwho's more interested in a quickcash turnover than in entertain-ment value." .

Moody's main interest now is to :make people laugh and to havethem laugh at themselves, thevictims of "all-for-fun" larceny.

The show times for Sir James ~tEast Towne are:Thursday and Friday: 1:00 p.m.,4:00 p.rn and 7:00 p.m.Saturday: 11 :00 a.m., 2:00 .m. and,4:00 p.m. :Sunday: I:00 p.m., 2:00 p.m. and!3.:00 p.m. .

All shows are free, of course. i

MAGICONtJim Moody is a man who cannot keep

his illusions to himself. So he sharesthem with anyone who will watch orlisten. ,

What's so unusual about some charac-ter sharing his illusions with others in abar? Yo," see that in every saloon intown.

The difference is that Moody is thecurrent resident magician at a newconcept night club called Magic One. Hisspecialty has nothing to do with makingdrinks disappear. Every ni!1Jlt he isentertaining with some fine sieight-of-hand and a little off-the-cuff humor.
