גוט שבת!
Sefer תילים begins with, “Fortunate is the man who does not go after the
counsel of the wicked…. for he is like a tree planted upon streams of
water, which gives its fruit at the proper time and its foliage does not
wither.” ל“חז say that we learn from the phrase “its foliage does not
whither” that the casual speech of תלמיחי חכמים is worthy of study.
A תלמיח חכם’s ‘fruit’ is his Torah learning and insights. His ‘foliage’
includes all his other speech which does not wither, but remains alive
and fresh. This is because everything he does is governed by Torah;
even his speech about worldly matters is connected to Torah. His
ordinary conversations become elevated and incorporated into the realm
of החושי.
We do not need to be תלמיחי חכמים to engage in this type of speech. We
just need to live our lives with Torah as a central value. In practice, we
should always ask ourselves, “Can I accomplish something positive with
my words of this moment? Can I make the person walking towards me
feel good by giving a warm greeting or by asking about his welfare? Can
I strengthen the bond with my spouse or child by expressing interest in
the things that matter to him or her? Can I cope with my worries better by
sharing them with a friend?”
Here, in yeshiva, Rebbeyim and Moros take the time to schmooze with
the boys. I’ve observed this happening during snack breaks, recess, and
lunch. It may be at the beginning of the day before yeshiva begins, or at
the end of the day by dismissal. One Morah comes early and meets with a
different student each day in her classroom. She brings him a hot cocoa
and they schmooze – שיחת חוליש – about random topics. The purpose is to
create a relationship and forge a connection with each boy, and to better
understand his needs in class.
May we all be zoche to use our mundane speech for the higher purpose
of strengthening relationships and to become even closer to our family
and friends.
Have an enjoyable Shabbos!

Dear Parents, ש“עמו
Last week we learned all about the concept of multiplying using
repeated addition and adding together equal groups. With that
in mind, we went on to learn the concept of dividing. We divided
by grouping objects by a specific number, to find the number of
groups. We also learned how to write division equations, and
solve simple word problems that involve division.
We focused on theme and plot this week in literature, honing
our comprehension skills. We learned this as four points and did
practice to make sure we acquired the skills:
• What happens in the beginning, middle, and end of a story is
the plot.
• Every story has one main idea which is the theme.
• Good readers pay attention to what happens and the order in
which it happens. (plot)
• They are then able to figure out and understand the main idea
of a story. (theme)
We introduced the blending strategy for words with the long i
sound, then we blended and sorted long and short i words,
sorting the long i by its spelling i, ie, igh, y.
We reviewed the concept of past, present, and future verbs. We
then wrote sentences using the verb in different tenses.
Building our oral vocabulary, we learned words like being
generous with others, assisting others when they need our
help, and if your snack is abundant, then it’s nice to share.
We heard and read about the upcoming elections. We read that
Bernie Sanders has a strong chance of being the democrat to run
against Donald Trump.
Have a great Shabbos,

Dear Parents, ש“עמו
This was a special week in the third grade!
First of all we finished parshas vayishlach and
quickly moved on to parshas vayeishev! We’re
ready to start really flying as our goal to finish
bereishis is still on our minds.
We also finished our memory system project
in time for parent teacher conferences this
coming Sunday. We’re really excited about
memory system as it is helping us remember
what happened in each of the perakim of
Bereishis.
In other news, we have been reviewing all of
the trupp one by one over the last few weeks
and are almost finished. This review is really
helping us improve our laining as we have
been breaking up into chavrusas to prepare
pesukim to lain you our classmates. We are
seeing real improvement. The boys have even
asked if they could have more time to prepare
their pesukim so that they can perfect the
laining before doing it for the class.
Have a wonderful Shabbos!

Dear Parents, ש“עמו
This week after much work we were מסיים מסכת This made our week even more special !ראש ישני
and enjoyable than other weeks. We are reviewing
the entire mesechta, and are currently reviewing פרה‘ב thoroughly. Our goal is to know what each mishna
discusses by heart.
In חומש, we finished ז“פרה ט , in which we learned
all about the most miraculous dish called the מש. We
then continued our learning in י“רש , where we
discovered many new ideas in the פסוהים.
In נביא, we learned a fascinating story about the
givonim and their conniving deceitful behavior to
trick ייושע into keeping them alive. One thing that
highlighted for us in this perek, is the ייושע
importance of making a היחוש י‘ and not ו“ח a
‘ חילול י .
In taryag, the boys are becoming much more fluent
in the מצות. The class reviews numbers 200-260 in
under five minutes! We are currently up to 320 מצוי.
Have a restful Shabbos!

Dear Parents , עמו''ש
We had a great week of learning!
We learned and acquired many new skills including:
Math: We learned how to solve word problems involving
more than one step, using fractions and a whole number.
We are constantly reviewing our basic math facts with daily
math drills.
Literature: We learned how to identify the characteristics of
a character by focusing on what the character says and does.
Spelling: This week’s spelling list focused on words ending
with a ‘er’ or ‘ar’. We practiced and reviewed these spelling
words throughout the week.
Grammar: We’ve been working on our daily quick fix it’s
with the help of our ‘’Check mates’’.
We’ve been focusing on placing an apostrophe in the place
of the missing letters in a contraction.
Writing: We practiced ‘’building’’ a story using a specific
setting, character, and main event.
Handwriting: We’re working on perfecting and
strengthening our cursive handwriting skills throughout the
week.
Science: We focused on another category of vertebrates –
the fish. We’ve learned how fish breathe under water and
about their many different features. We can now categorize
many different vertebrate animals.
Social Studies: We had our social studies test on our region’s
unit.
Gut Shabbos!
I look forward to seeing you personally at the Melava Malka!

Dear Parents, עמו''ש
!שלום עליכם It was 'ברוך י a week of growth in תורי ועבוחי.
Areas of accomplishments:
We reviewed tucking in one’s .מנחי The boys having been working on the physical preparation for תפילי
clothing and going to the bathroom before תפילי. This allows one to be in a more mentshlich mindset for
davening.
The Upper Boys continued with the ideas of lending money without .בהיאות The boys continued further in גמרא
specifying a due date. Is there a difference if the loan is done verbally or through a document? What makes a
documented loan different? What was the historical perspective regarding the trouble for making a documented
loan? We then were treated with seeing how important understanding תורי was to תלמיחים. We were then
introduced to the laws of ערלי, specifically to how it is affected by the month before ראש ישני. Next, we
dissected how a חרשי works from the stage until the final ילכי. What a beautiful masterpiece!
The Intermediate boys continued with the ideas of טומאי . what is a מת מצוי? Who must bury a מת מצוי?
What is the process of becoming טיור? What is the difference between a טבול יום and כיפורים מחוסר ? Next,
we discussed the dynamics of a חרשי. What are the rules for using seemingly superfluous words? How many
specifications in a פסוה create a rule instead of just a חיש? How far do we take specificity into account when
forming a חיש?
program booklets are ready! Just in time, as some of the boys are already awaiting חומש The accelerated חומש
the new פרשיות. It is great to see how the start off their mornings with running ahead and interpreting the
עיוש and בהיאות program as well. Between the חזרי on their own! We look forward to instituting a פסוהים
programs of חומש, soon the boys will be the ones giving the שיעור and the רבי will be able to learn from them.
The questions, answers, and creative ?!פרשי How beautiful is it to see the boys preparing each week’s פרשי
it sparks from the boys is a tremendous נחת!
The boys will be soon preparing the .ילכות Some of the boys have transitioned to learning morning ילכי
.פורים of ילכות
.The topic was Natural vs Willful Ignorance !פרה ב' This week we finished Project #22, continuing מסילת ישרים
What are the components necessary to truly be aware and able to run from עבירות? What is the danger of
ignoring עבירות? Why would one mistakenly choose to ignore עבירות? What does it mean to debase oneself
below the level of an animal? What are the two categories of fleeing from עבירות? What is יתבוננות? How does
one integrate יתבוננות into one’s life?

Mathematics: We have started to solve for variables in algebra. We treated to the various
styles that the problems can come in and learned how to adapt to each. With enough practice, the
boys will perform them flawlessly. Remember: understanding not memorizing is key!
Literature: We have been spending a lot of time on the MobyMax systems reading all sorts of stories.
The reading comprehension skills will be put to good use throughout everything we do!
Spelling: We are so fortunate for the various levels that MobyMax provides to each and every
individual student. The boys have been hard at work going through the newly acquired words.
Science: As a typical way to prepare for the terminologies for a science exam, the boys were treated
to a big crossword puzzle. It was inspiring to see how the boys persisted in solving it. Some boys did
not even bother going to recess, they were so wrapped up in it!
UPDATE! Please be on the lookout for the Why Not Me Projects from ט''ו בשבט. There have been
so many beautiful conversations spawned by the project. What is better than a tangible feeling of
growth and ambition for the תלמיחים? Please have the boys hang it up in their rooms.
