Have you always wanted to be able to draw or paint, but didn’t know how to start? Max Hale’s one-day workshop “Can’t Draw? Want to Draw?” should encourage you to

sharpen your pencils and get them pointed in the right direction. Or have you been given a set of water-colours or acrylic paints,

and aren’t sure what to do with them? We have a range of beginner’s workshops to help you get started.

Once you have developed some confidence there are many classes for “improvers”, in a range of materials and media, so whatever you are interested in – portraits, designing your own greetings cards, or galloping ahead with your “equine drawing” skills, we can probably provide a workshop to suit you.

We also run some Creative Writing workshops, so you can finally get started on that novel. Or combine workshops and write and illustrate your own story...

The tall, yellow flowers of Ragwort are seen to be spreading over wide areas of southern England.

The weed comes under the Injurious Weeds Act and is known to kill horses, cattle and sheep.

Its toxins attack the liver. Horse deaths are reported to be quite rapid while the toxin cumulates in cattle and sheep which can survive for several years.

In Hungerford and Marlborough areas, farmers are noting the spread of the weed which is particularly dangerous when cut into hay and silage.

Landholders, highways authorities and local councils are responsible for control and there are suggestions that ASBO and unemployed people could be engaged to help in eradication work.

CHAMBER TO HELP WITH CARNIVALHungerford chamber of Commerce is expected to take over running Hungerford’s annual carnival.Hungerford Round Tble told a recent chamber meeting that Round Table no longer had the man-power or resources to organise and run the carni-val.Chamber chairman Nigel Perrin told the meeting that Neale Marney had agreed to chair a carnival committee comprising members of Round Table and the chamber.Concern has been expressed that the carnival dates may clash with the Marlborough Jazz Festival which drws many people from Hungerford.

PRESSURE FOR CROSSINGHungerford Town Council’s highways and trans-port committee will recommend that the council still press for a pedestrian crossing in Bridge Street near the war memorial.A recent traffic and pedestrian survey found there was no basis for a crossing.

LETTER TO EDITOR

Sirs,It may interest residents within one mile of Hungerford Town Centre that West Berkshire Council have made a planning appli-cation to change the use of the Day/Resource Centre in Ramsbury Terrace in Hungerford from D1 to D2 status. Nothing too trouble-some in that then? But wait a minute..........This Application allows West Berkshire Council to rent out the Day Centre for Stag Nights, Hen Parties, Discotheques, Wed-dings, Parties, bingo etc seven days a week until 11:00pm. This usage and operating times are wholly inappropriate for such noisy activities in a quiet area with at least 6 children’s bedrooms within 10 metres of the Centre. The Council state that the Centre Manager can control this activity via the use of lease and hire agreements. This is unenforceable. Who will be present to regulate the activities and enforce the clos-ing times? Will West Berks Council be present at every disco or stag night to ensure the revelry ceases? There is no means by which the opening and closing times pro-posed (even if they were acceptable, which they are not) can be enforced. Hungerford Police Station is un-manned and, in any event, we all know that the Police will not respond to noise complaints. There are already enough entertainment and meeting premises available within the Town (British Legion, Croft Hall, Town Hall, Rugby Club, John O’ Gaunt Community College numerous hotels and the Hungerford Club. This proposal will cause untold and regular disturbance to an es-timated 350 local residents not to mention 30 primary school-age children. I think that the real reason for this application is actually summed up in the Planning Application itself: “The rentals charged will be affordable to hirers, but will enable the Council to meet the high running costs of these purpose built, fully accessible, specialist facilities.” Yes- at a personal cost to the local residentsHaving managed to run a highly successful Old Folks Day Centre into the ground, West Berks Council now wants to recoup some of its self–inflicted losses by damaging the lives of the residents who live within earshot of this proposal. There is no reassurance as to the use that the building will be put to, in fact the opening and closing times directly lead to the con-clusion that it WILL be used for late night entertainment, why else specify 11:00 pm? Not many WI meetings take place until 11 at night. The Planning Application deliberately overstates the number of parking spaces (20) on the site. The true number is a maximum of 16 spaces at the very most. The residents already experience parking conflict and dispute with the 8 to 10 workers currently at the Centre and the commuters who street-park and use resident parking spaces to avoid paying in the Town centre and the Station. What will be the result if dozens of people turn up for a wedding reception or a disco? The centre may close at 11pm (we don’t of course believe that will happen for one second) but we all know the activity outside will continue until much later. Smoking, talking and swearing. All this with a large number of primary school age children attempting to sleep within 5 to 10 metres of the Centre. I urge all residents within amplified earshot of this monstrous pro-posal to submit an objection before the deadline of 8th August 2012. You will find the details on the West Berks web site under Plan-ning Application Number: 12/01620/FUL NEIGH1. Yours etc...Roger Brown6 Ramsbury Drive, Hungerford

3/8/12Call for new artists Open Studios is calling for committed artists who are pas-sionate about their work to apply for inclusion in the scheme in West Berkshire and North Hampshire for May 2013. When the Hon. Ed Vaizey, Minister for Culture, Commu-nication and the Creative Industries opened INSIGHT, the flagship exhibition of Open Studios in May of this year he commented on the high standard of the exhibits and the dedi-cation of the artists. Over 1,000 people visited the show and many went on to meet artists in their studios. All the artists featured in a glossy illustrated Directory of Artists, 10,000 of which were distributed widely. Throughout the year there are exhibitions and activities the latest being Olympic Spirit a collaborative mixed media pan-el by 75 artists hanging in the Corn Exchange Newbury to celebrate the Cultural Olympiad. Open Studios includes artists from West Berkshire, North Hampshire, Reading and the borders of Oxfordshire and Wiltshire. Practicing artists who pursue work in traditional or contemporary art forms are invited to register their inter-est at www.open-studios.org.uk using the button ‘For Art-ists’. Submissions are required by 31st August and selection takes place early September in readiness for the Open Stu-dios 2013 Launch event in October which will mark the start of the scheme’s 25th year.
