DISAPPOINTED DEMOCRATLetter to the Editor: It is with great disappointment I am writingthis letter. For over two decades I have worked hard to electfellow democrats that I thought were worth supporting. Oneof those is the Honorable Judge Robert Jacon. But his recentactions have left me wondering. He had the opportunity tojoin his fellow Democrat, Honorable Judge George Ceresia inappointing Bill Dedrick to the position of Commissioner of Jurors, but instead he voted to appoint an Albany County Resident,Dawn Signoracci. I am sure she is a fine person, but I personallyknow Bill Dedrick to be the most Honorable and Honest man Ihave ever met. I had the pleasure of working with Bill Dedrickfor seven years in the County legislature and supported himas our Minority Leader. We as Democrats have a fewopportunities to support people we feel are of the highestcharacter and should not squander our chances when theyare available to us. Sometimes Democrats are their own worstenemies, and by the Honorable Judge Jacon voting with theRensselaer Republican Majority Leader of the Legislature isjust another example of step backwards when they have theopportunity to move forward.~Keith Hammond, Averill ParkEditors Note: The above article does not necessarily reflect the opinion

The month of March. It comes in like a lion – ice fishermenbraving the cold on a frozen and wind swept Crystal Lake. And goes out like a lamb – Averill Park High School runners outof the gym and back on the road. We survived – and evenenjoyed – another winter!March is also a great month to consider putting away a littlemore for your retirement. You have until April 15th to contributeto your IRA for calendar year 2010. Currently, the limit for anIRA is $5000, or $6000 if you’re over the age of 50.If you’re self-employed or a small business owner, your taxadvisor may suggest a SEP (Simplified Employee Pension),which enables you to put away up to 25% of your earnedincome or $49,000, whichever is less. How about a little financial Spring-cleaning? Do you have IRAaccounts at several different banks or fund companies? Andmaybe an old 401(k) or two from previous employers? Considerconsolidating those into one well-diversified IRA.Contact your tax preparer or financial advisor to discuss howthese ideas might benefit you and your family. This information is general in nature and may not apply to yourspecific situation. NORTH GREENBUSH FINANCIAL REPORT

SPEAKS FOR ITSELF

Letter to the Editor: Last week, the North Greenbush TownBoard received a report on the operation of the towncomptroller’s office. The independent report detailed realconcerns and problems over the past comptroller’s handling oftown finances and management of certain town accounts.Indeed, the area that prompted the most concern was therevelation that he had opened a town bank account holdingapproximately $3 million that only he had access to. The pastcomptroller, who was not reappointed in 2009, but allowed tohold over in the position, also failed to perform necessaryreconciliations of town accounts, did not computerize ledgerentries or carry out other basic and needed steps. The independent report was commissioned by the Town Boardbecause we were concerned regarding management of townfinances. The report is likely to prompt further town action toensure taxpayer money is being properly managed.Despite the serious problems described in the report, the formercomptroller is attempting to confuse residents by personallyattacking me. To blame me for the tardiness of his work is asridiculous as his practice of balancing the Town’s checkbookannually. However, numbers do not lie and facts included in theindependent report show that the Town Board made the rightdecision. While Supervisor Ashworth initially called our action“political” she later stated in a finance committee meeting that“she knew there were problems with the comptrollers office inNovember” and that “it was frustrating that he didn’t get hisstuff done when he was suppose to”.Our actions regarding the former comptroller are in line withthe work of Town Board members, including myself, Al Spain,Kelly Hoffman and Joe Bott, to reform town finances. We havedone this by focusing on how every town tax dollar is spentand by managing town finances the way taxpayers handletheir household budgets. Would you balance your householdcheckbook once per year? Our comptroller did! Political attacks are easy to make, but as board members wewill let the results – reduced debt, stable taxes, improvedfinances and better fiscal management – speak for themselves. You may request a copy of the report by calling our Town Clerkat 283-4306 or by e-mail @ [email protected]~ Lou Desso, North Greenbush Town Councilman

VOTE FOR RANDY HOWARTH AND CHARLES

COLLINS— THE PEACEFUL REVOLUTION

A peaceful revolution is at hand to restructure our govern-ment so as to support the weary taxpayers and proud resi-dents of our village. We don’t need to march in the streetsand we don’t need to shed blood, thankfully. All we need todo is to cast our votes for Randy Howarth for Trustee andCharles Collins for Mayor, respectively. It’s a change 40 yearsin the making. The time is now to end costly, unnecessaryexpenditures that are draining our precious tax dollars andwasting our limited resources, while benefiting thelives of a select few. The escrow portion of my mortgagehas increased three times in the last five years, largely dueto increased local taxes. This rate of escalation is unsustain-able and unacceptable. The appropiate response is to con-sider a consolidation of village and town services, which theprevailing majority in power has rejected. Randy Howarthand Charles Collins, in contrast, have the experience, thewisdom, and the will to bring Nassau into the 21st Century. Please give them your support on March 15th. Things cannever improve unless each of us lends a hand.

IS MY DOG DANGEROUS?

Both New York State and local law haverestrictions on dangerous dogs. A dogthat bites someone may be declareddangerous, but a dog that threatensor intimidates a person to the degreethat a reasonable person feels that heis at risk of being bitten can also bedeclared dangerous.Tickets can be issued for local municipal violations. A courtappearance will be necessary and fines may result.New York State has a dangerous dog hearing procedure thatcan result in a court appearance. If a dog is found to meet thecriteria for a dangerous dog in New York State, the court mayimpose restrictions on how a dog is maintained as well as otherserious penalties.Harboring a dangerous dog can result in lawsuits that can bevery costly. It is important to maintain all dogs in a safe andsecure manner to both protect the public and the dog.Dogs should never be allowed to run at large. What a dog isdoing or what is happening to a dog when you are not thereleaves too much risk for all concerned. Most dog bites to strangers occur as a person is entering theproperty either into the home or onto the property. If yourdog barks at people, rushes at people or threatens in any way, this behavior can lead to more aggressive actions as time goeson. Electric fences work fine for some dogs, but are particularlydangerous when the dog, so confined, is exhibiting aggressivebehavior. A stranger may be cautious when opening a fencegate, but if there is no such barrier he may find himself well intothe dog’s property before he meets an aggressive dog. Everyyear there are bites to people in just such a scenario. How a dog acts with the family, people he knows, and otheranimals he is familiar with, is not indicative of the way he willbehave in the presence of strangers. Many people are shockedwhen their dog is accused of aggressive or dangerous behavior, especially if they are not there to see it.Pets are members of our family and it is difficult sometimes toconsider the fact that, beloved as they may be, we should stillkeep in mind that they are, in fact, animals.~For questions, call Catherine Crawmer, Animal Control Officer477-8230

PET OWNERS DOING MORE for

PET’S TEETH(NAPSA) Pet owners have become increasingly aware of the im-portance of pet oral health and its effect on whole-body health andwell-being. While daily tooth-brushing is the gold standard in oral

care for pets as it is for humans, less than 1 percent of dog ownersare compliant.Instead, many turn to treats with dental benefits, known for being more enjoyable for pets and most convenient for

owners.A new study shows that 77 percent of dog owners gavetreats they believed to provide oral care benefits last year, with 30percent increasing such treat giving. Yet up to 60 percent of them

don’t realize that their dogs may have progressing oral disease. Partof the problem is lack of veterinary care. Also, most treats that claimto clean teeth lack the research to prove it.*Veterinary dentists only

trust a fraction of treats to be effective at cleaning teeth and safelyprotecting them, says Dr. Jan Bellows, veterinary dentist, diplomatand incoming president of the American Veterinary Dental College.

According to Dr. Bellows, it’s important for pet owners to under-stand which dental treats work effectively to eliminate plaque andtartar buildup and are safe for pet teeth. Some dental treats, espe-

cially real bones, are notorious for their low nutritional value andtheir hard textures, which can contribute to tooth fractures, Dr.Bellows says. Many consumers are accustomed to seeking out tooth-

brushes and toothpaste that carry the American Dental Association(ADA) seal of approval. And dental standards are equally as impor-tant for pets and their oral health.Fortunately, there’s a governing

body that confirms if dental treats work, using third-party testing. The Veterinary Oral Health Council (VOHC) is similar in nature tothe ADA but is applied to pet products. Through stringent research

and review, the VOHC determines which products on the marketare effective. Greenies¨ Canine Dental Chews was the first brand ofdental treats to receive the seal for plaque and tartar control and

has been a pioneer in dental treats that meet VOHC standards. Walkinto any pet store and you will find dozens of treats that claim toclean teeth, Dr. Bellows says. While it’s easy to make teeth-cleaning

claims, formulating a treat that significantly protects teeth is difficult. The VOHC seal is there to help veterinarians and pet owners recog-nize which products are proven to work. For more information

about the Veterinary Oral Health Council, visit www.vohc.org. Forfurther pet dental chews information, visit www.greenies.com.
