As legislative representatives of District 2, including the townsof East Greenbush, North Greenbush and Poestenkill, we arehappy to provide our constituents with a report on actionstaken at the June 10, 2014 legislative meeting. At the June 10 meeting, legislators took action to keep animportant drug task force in operation after the expiration ofstate grant funding. Many in the region and county have been concerned by asharp increase in drug offenses, particularly offenses relatedto illegal use and sale of opiates. The county drug task force, including two investigators assigned to the District Attorney’soffice, has fought to reduce drug crimes. These positions werefunded through the state Operation Impact grant.Unfortunately, state funding priorities shifted from druginvestigation to prevention of illegal gun violence. That createda funding shortfall which could have led to the loss of the twoinvestigators and a reduction in overall drug investigations inthe county. The Legislature approved a resolution to provide funding tothe Sheriff’s Department to allow for the two investigators tocontinue working to prevent drug crimes. The resolution passedunanimously at the June 10 meeting, with lawmakers recognizingthe need to fight growing instances of drug abuse in the area.Legislators also approved a resolution supporting statelegislation, now under consideration in both the State Senateand Assembly, to improve long term care provisions forveterans.Legislators also approved resolutions for the purchase ofmaterials for repair and maintenance of county roads, and toobtain equipment needed for road work. Please be cautioustravelling through work sites during the summer constructionseason to ensure workers get home to their families. The Legislature will also hold a public hearing on the proposedHudson Valley Community College 2014-2015 budget prior tothe legislative meeting on July 8 at 5:30 p.m. Residents canlearn more about the college’s plans by visiting www.hvcc.edu.The new 2014 edition of the Officials and Services Directory isnow available. To obtain a print copy of the Directory, call 270-2880 or email at the legislative websites. JESUS SAYS; STOP, TAKE A RESTOn Communion Sunday, July 6, 2014, the message shared inthe Gospel of Matthew 11:16-19, 25-30 is “Jesus rests betweenhis teaching and performing miracles in his ministry.” In theseverses, Jesus says: “Come to Me, all you who labor and areheavy laden, and I will give you rest;” and “... and you will findrest for your souls.” In his time, Jesus was one of manytraveling preachers and teachers. He soon became more thanjust one in the crowd because of what he offered: In the caseof this text, he offers rest. In the sermon, the Reverend EdwardL. Van Kampen will reference Jesus not only promising rest, butpracticing rest. In a time of chronic hurry and busyness, Jesus’gift and witness of rest is needed like never before. IF YOU CARE, LEAVE IT THERE DEC Urges New Yorkers NotTo Disturb Fawns and OtherYoung Wildlife. New Yorkersshould keep their distance andnot disturb newborn fawns orother young wildlife as manyanimals are in the peak seasonfor giving birth, the New YorkState Department ofEnvironmental Conservation (DEC) cautioned. It is not unusualto see a young bird crouched in the yard or a young rabbit inthe flower garden, both apparently abandoned. Finding a fawndeer lying by itself is also fairly common. Many people assumethat young wildlife found alone are helpless and need assistancefor their survival, however, in nearly all cases this is a mistakeand typically human interaction does more damage than good. Those that see a fawn or other newborn wildlife should enjoytheir encounter, but keep it brief, maintain some distance anddo not attempt to touch the animal.Young wildlife quickly venture into the world on shaky legs orfragile wings. While most are learning survival from one orboth parents, some normally receive little or no care. Often, wild animal parents stay away from their young when peopleare near. For all of these young animals, the perils of survivalare a natural part of life in the wild. White-tailed deer fawns present a good example of how humanintervention with young wildlife can be problematic. Most fawnsare born during late May and the first half of June. Whilefawns are able to walk shortly after birth, they spend most oftheir first several days lying still. During this period a fawn isalso usually left alone by the adult female (doe) except whennursing. People occasionally find a lone fawn and mistakenlyassume it has been orphaned or abandoned, which is veryrare. Fawns should never be picked up. If human presence isdetected by the doe, the doe may delay its next visit to nurse.A fawn’s best chance to survive is by being raised by the adultdoe. Fawns nurse three to four times a day, usually for lessthan 30 minutes at a time, but otherwise the doe keeps herdistance. This helps reduce the chance that she will attract apredator to the fawn. The fawn’s protective coloration andability to remain motionless all help it avoid detection bypredators and people. If a fawn or other young wildlife is spotted, “If You Care,Leave It There.” In nearly all cases that is the best thing forthe animal. DO NOT consider young wildlife as possible pets. This is illegal and is bad for the animal. Wild animals are not wellsuited for life in captivity and they may carry diseases that canbe given to people. If the animal is obviously injured or sick, see DEC’s Wildlife Health Program (www.dec.ny.gov/animals/261.html ) for instructions about what to do. Otherwise, resist the temptation to take them out of the wild. For moreinformation and answers to frequently asked questions aboutyoung wildlife, visit the DEC website at http://www.dec.ny.gov/animals/6956.html.
