Silent Auctions Registration entitles you to a bidder number. Your bidder number is located on both your bidder card and wristlet. It allows you to bid on all items in the Silent and Live Auctions. There are multiple Silent Auction sections, along with a Gift Certificate Wall, Buy-In Parties and chances to buy raffle tickets, photos and more, each with separate closing times. To place a bid on a Silent Auction item, print your name and bidder number clearly on the bid sheet next to the amount you would like to bid. Remember, you may skip lines if you wish! All bids must be written prior to the closing of the section. Please print clearly when signing up for Buy-In Parties.

Live Auction Raise your bidder card to bid on amazing trips, events, parties, and experiences. Each item goes to the highest bidder. Be quick!

Check Out Guests will have the option to Express Pay by registering a credit card in advance, thus eliminating the need to see the cashier at the end of the event. We highly encourage guests to participate in Express Pay to expedite the checkout process. Non-Express Pay bidders with purchases can swipe a credit card or pay by check at the end of the event. Silent Auction item pick-up and Live Auction item pick-up will be 30 minutes after the sections have closed.

Fine Print The Auction Committee has made every effort to describe and catalog all items correctly. All items are sold “as is” and the Auction Committee and QAE PTSA are not responsible for the accuracy of any description shown in this catalog or made verbally. The values listed are estimates only and are not warranted for tax purposes or fair market value. Items have not been appraised unless noted. The Auction Committee reserves the right to withdraw items from or add items to the auction without prior notice. All purchases are final. There are no refunds or exchanges. A final bid acknowledged by the Auctioneer is a legal contract to purchase the item. Reservations for trips must be mutually arranged with the donor unless otherwise noted.

Kindergarten

300 A Silent Wish for Peace Around the World

Ms. Ward’s kindergarten class is thrilled to bring you this mixed-media artwork. The peace signs on the border have been created from the children’s fingerprints, encapsulated in sea mist card stock appearing as bubbles seemingly floating across the oceans. The central narrative is a brick wall in which the children have used tempera paint to translate the word peace in two dozen languages. This dynamic social justice artwork is emblematic of Ms. Ward’s and the parent community’s passion for modeling social and environmental awareness as a building block for change. Together we envision a strong network of families who champion a fair and just world and who inspire the communities around them. Inspiration for this artwork comes from the Karen Katz book Can You Say Peace? and it is dedicated to the International Day of Peace. All around the World people observe a day of peace and nonviolence. Children of a very young age have an inherent sense of what is fair and what is not. Queen Anne Elementary is focused on instilling in our kids and families the understanding that they are capable of making a difference in the world. In time, such awareness enables action, which enables justice. 26"x 38"x 3/4" Donated by: Ms. Ward’s Class

301 The Imagination Tree

From their 'Treehouse' perch, Ms. Huffman’s fledglings present to you 'The Imagination Tree'. "No better way is there to learn to love nature than to understand art. It dignifies every flower of the field. And, the child who sees the thing of beauty which a bird on the wing becomes when transferred to wood or canvas will probably not throw the customary stone" -- Oscar Wilde. Drawing from their recent science lessons on nature, this captivating work of art reflects the kindergarteners’ imaginations. Each child has created and painted a ceramic bird to perch in a tree, the foliage of which is created by their own handprints. The tree itself is painted in acrylic on pallet wood adding to the use of natural materials within this mixed media piece. The background represents Seattle, our very own city, which is surrounded by art and nature. Donated by: Ms. Huffman’s Class

Reaching for the Stars “Every great dream begins with a dreamer. Always remember, you have within you the strength, the patience, and the passion to reach for the stars to change the world.” The above quote, often attributed to Harriet Tubman, really captures the essence of our Kindergarten year in Room 203! Our children have not only been challenged to become self-directed learners, but have also called upon themselves to answer big questions about the world around them. Specifically, they explored how to use their creativity to solve problems. Building on the notion that the creative, fresh ideas of the next generation can change our society, the kids each wrote about a dream ranging from the personal to aspirations for the world. They used tempera paint to color the dream sheet and then eagerly modeled their hands to provide replicas for creating each unique piece in our canvas. Our kindergartner hands were then layered on top of a beautiful blue/black acrylic background. In the sky above the hands are stars painted by Ms. Cryan Leary and Ms. Katz. The stars feature the above quote in their iconic handwriting. A perfect piece for your home as our kids reach for the stars! 20”x30” Donated by: Ms. Cryan Leary’s Class

303 Mind Metropolis

What is art? Where do we find it? What stories can we tell in the materials we use? Can you capture inspiration inside of a frame? There are so many textures, patterns, colors, ideas, and opportunities in our everyday lives. Our kids had the exciting task of gathering all the materials necessary to create a Seattle city skyline collage. Each child showcased their vision and artistry with mixed media: recycled scraps, sentimental fabrics, lost and found treasures, wrappers, litter, receipts, used books, fridge art, flyers, ads and more. Mind Metropolis: where the possibilities are as vast as our imaginations. 31"x17"x2" shadowbox Donated by: Ms. Eakin’s Class

304 Seattle POP

“Once you 'got' Pop, you could never see a sign again the same way again. And once you thought Pop, you could never see America the same way again.” -- Andy Warhol-- Mrs. Brown’s first grade class is proud to present their pop art representation of their local iconic landmarks. Your first graders got a quick overview of the painter Andy Warhol and his efforts to transform popular icons into fine sought-after gallery pieces. Andy Warhol mechanized his art to bring out a unique look and help speed production of his works. Our first grade explorers did Andy proud as they embraced technology and put forth their favorite landmarks on iPads. Printed copies of their work are arranged together on a ready-to-hang canvas with a Mod Podge finish. You can blame Warhol for your kids wanting to paint bananas blue and skies yellow, but thank him for the 15 minutes of praise you'll get every time someone sees this winning auction piece hanging on your wall! 30"x30" Donated by: Ms. Brown’s Class

305 Dragonflies

Dragonflies have a special place in Ms. Meck's life. The summer before she started at QAE she was sitting by a beautiful lake wondering if she did the right thing by leaving her job so quickly. Right then a large beautiful dragonfly landed on her chair right next to her. She looked at it and was overwhelmed with the feeling that good things were to come. Ever since then dragonflies tend to show up when she is trying to make decisions in her life. Her students think of themselves as her little dragonflies. They each uniquely painted their own dragonfly that was attached to a 30x30 board with epoxy resin poured over it with the quote, "what if i fall? oh but darling, what if you fly!" Ms. Meck is always there to make sure her little dragonflies fly. 30"x30" Donated by: Ms. Meck’s Class

A Walk in the Clouds Ms. Smith's first graders have been exploring the whimsical existence of art in nature and how this can translate across many mediums. They began by studying the work of Alexander Calder, who has an eagle sculpture in Seattle's own sculpture park, particularly focusing on his mobiles. They then studied clay and its properties, as well as organic and geometric shapes. The kids were given slabs of clay, from which they cut out various circle shapes, which emphasized the use of geometric shapes. These shapes were then assembled into a large cloud, which showed the use of organic shapes. The kids then cut out raindrops, which would be hung from the cloud. Once the clouds and raindrops were fired in the kiln, they were brought back to class to be painted with ceramic underglazes, and then fired again. The importance of making art is monumental at any stage of life, but knowing where to look is often challenging. By studying different shapes, mediums, and artists, we come to find that art already exists all around us. Please come enjoy our masterpiece and we think you'll see that finding inspiration really is a walk in the clouds. 14"x 15"x 1" Donated by: Ms. Smith’s Class

307 Abstract Dots

This is a modern masterpiece! Ms. Dickens' class used a special ink process to create beautiful inspirations of vivid color. Each child contributed a circle to this collaborative artwork. 24”x24” If you aren't fortunate enough to go home with this artwork, check out item #518 - the individual pieces created with the same process and custom made into pendants! Whale Watching Through Colored Lenses Ms. Thibault’s 2nd grade students each created a portrait of whales using inspiration from teachings and books from our own Queen Anne Library. They used bright, bold colors to express their creativity and stamp their own unique version of whales on a 3x3 inch square shrinky dink, which were baked down to 1 inch squares. When combined, the squares create a collage of mini paintings. Each square floats above the background to give a unique 3D feel, framing the brilliance of creation and adding depth. The beautiful colors give a modern feel and bring you to the depths of the ocean. This masterpiece of whales has been professionally custom-framed with museum-quality glass that eliminates reflections, allows maximum light and brightening of the colors to really show off the children’s vibrant artistic creations with amazing clarity. This special glass also has a 99% UV protection to keep the colors from fading over time so you can keep this piece beautiful and the colors brilliant for generations. The dimensions make it easy to hang anywhere in your home and display. This will be a conversation piece for years to come. 15" x 15" Donated by: Ms. Thibault’s Class

309 Learning is Out of This World

To learn is to explore! Ms. Shaw’s second graders present: “Learning Is Out of This World”—a collaborative work of art in which each student (and Ms. Shaw!) has taken their fingerprint and applied it to the outline of our Queen Anne Elementary Explorer. The end result is a bright and vibrant rocket to be cherished for ages. 24 digits joined together into one final piece, signed by each contributing artist. Donated by: Ms. Shaw’s Class

310 School of Fish

In the spirit of project-based learning and our third graders’ study of migration and salmon, Mr. Bing’s students have artfully colored a school of fish. Each hand-colored fish has its place in the “school” that creates one large salmon image, which is swimming through Puget Sound on its way to its spawning ground in Carkeek Park. This mixed media piece uses a decoupage technique and incorporates oil pastels in shades of blues and silver, a nautical chart, and wood pallet. The creation will speak for itself. 36" x 24" Donated by: Mr. Bingaman’s Class

Bench of Wisdom Mr. Liner’s class is happy to present “Bench of Wisdom,” a collection of sage third-grade advice captured in a gorgeous walnut bench. First, each class member came up with their best piece of advice for life, amazing gems that run the gamut from inspirational to practical. The class then studied Gustav Klimt’s “Portrait of Adele-Bloch Bauer” and learned of its fascinating provenance. Inspired, and equipped with strips of walnut veneer and silver paint pens, they then wrote out their advice in beautiful script and decorated it with art nouveau motifs. Framed in a solid walnut bench, their advice has become a work of art, a thing of beauty, and a surefire conversation piece. The bench itself is simple, sleek, and beautifully crafted, the perfect place to capture forever the unique spirit of that wonderful creature—the third grader. 36"x14"x18 1/2" Donated by: Mr. Liner’s Class

312 A Community Weaving Project

Mrs. Palumbo's class explored the wild world of weaving. First we practiced with individual mini-looms, honing our skills and experimenting with no-rules, free creative expression. The loom was strung with twine and then woven with different textures of yarn, ribbon, and string in earth-tone blues. Each student wove a section of their own design. The result is a gorgeous, earthy wall hanging that will be a stunning textural piece for many years to come. 12” x 24” Donated by: Mrs. Palumbo’s Class

313 ...and in this moment I am happy

Isn’t that what we want in life, moments that are happy? We want this for ourselves, for our children, for those around us! Working together in Mr. Bailey's 4th grade class, we defined moments in our life that make us happy; whether at home, outside, or in school. Then we talked about colors that bring us joy as well. We combined these colors and words to repurpose a piece of art that once made someone happy into a new creation. We hope that our 2016 Art Auction wall art will make you, and those who see it hanging in your home…HAPPY, too! 25" X 31" Donated by: Mr. Bailey’s Class

Woodland Symphony Ms. Colando's 4th graders present to you their “Woodland Symphony”—a student-driven collaboration in which the class researched and created their own vibrant forest filled with native flora and fauna of the Pacific Northwest. Through the expressive art of mixed media collage, the students designed and painted a stunning sunset forest scene filled with woodland creatures, birds, trees, flowers, and streams. This exploration of an ecosystem working harmoniously together like a symphony is further illustrated by elegant paper trees hand cut from a musical score. Their landscape is captured for posterity on a natural birch elephant wood painting panel which is the perfect background for their creative endeavor. 20" x 30” x 1.5” Donated by: Ms. Colando’s Class

315 You Dream, You Dare, You Fly

Much like a bird, we are ultimately teaching our children how to fly independently. Queen Anne Elementary teaches our children to be creative problem solvers and brave learners so that they will have the skills to be independent individuals when set out on their own. Each child in Ms. Hunter's class was given a photo of a brightly colored bird. They were asked to draw their bird onto watercolor paper using vibrant gouache paints. The goal of painting each bird was not to worry about every detail or assume that you're not a good artist but rather to have fun, experiment and engage in the process. We learned about mixing colors and how they can be altered subtly or drastically, depending on your intention. We learned that if you made a mistake, you can easily fix it by painting over it. It is letting go and getting comfortable with the process that can be most freeing. “The bird dares to break the shell, then the shell breaks open and the bird can fly openly. This is the simplest principle of success. You dream, you dare and you fly.” ― Israelmore Ayivor 20" x 30" Donated by: Ms. Hunter’s Class

5th Grade The graduating 5th grade class is the founding kindergarten class for QAE. They hold a special place in the heart of QAE and have become a tight knit group of friends. They have so many special memories, they couldn’t fit them all on one piece of art…so they decided to create two!
