Title Learning Personalized Ontology for Interpretation of Discovered Knowledge in Massive Text Information
Biodata Yuefeng Li is a professor in the School of Electrical Engineering and
Computer Science, Queensland University of Technology, Australia.
He has published over 160 refereed journal and conference papers.
He has demonstrable experience in leading large-scale research
projects and has achieved many established research outcomes
that have been published and highly cited in top journals and
conferences (His total citations are 3,123 and the highest citation
per paper = 208). His research interests include Web intelligence,
ontology learning, data mining and decision support systems. He
has been a general conference chair of 2015 IEEE/WIC/ACM
International Conferences on Web Intelligence and Intelligent
Agent Technology, 6-9 Dec 2015, Singapore; and a program chair
of 2016 IEEE/WIC/ACM International Conferences on Web
Intelligence, 13-16 October, USA. He currently is an Editor-in-Chief
of Web Intelligence Journal, an Associate Editor of the
International Journal of Pattern Recognition and Artificial
Intelligence, and an Associate Editor of the IEEE Intelligent
Informatics Bulletin.
Abstract It is estimated that more than 80% of big data were stored in text
format that contain invaluable knowledge for decision makers;
however, it is very hard for them to understand the invaluable
knowledge in terms of data mining results. Personalized Ontology
learning is an automatic process of building specific ontologies
from a domain ontology and massive text information for acquiring
user information needs. This talk will discuss the current research
trends on both text mining and personalized ontology learning. It
also presents how personalized ontology learning helps people to
understand text mining results; and discusses several challenging
issues, such as how to define proper machine readable
representations for discovered knowledge, and how to update
ontology using new or discovered knowledge.

PROF. DR. STEFAN RÜGER
Title Visual mining - interpreting image and video
Biodata Prof Stefan Rüger reads Physics at Freie Universität Berlin and
gained his PhD in Computer Science at Technische Universität
Berlin (1996) on the Theory of Neural Networks. During the next
decade he carved out his academic career from postdoc to Reader
researching multimedia information retrieval at Imperial College
London, University of London, where he also held an EPSRC
Advanced Research Fellowship (1999-2004). In 2006 Stefan
became a Professor of Knowledge Media when he joined The Open
University's Knowledge Media Institute to cover the area of
Multimedia and Information Systems. He currently holds an
Honorary Professorship from the University of Waikato, New
Zealand, and has held Visiting Fellowships at Imperial College
London and Cranfield University, UK. Stefan is interested in the
intellectual challenge of visual processing with a view to automated
multimedia understanding.
Abstract Like text mining, visual media mining tries to make sense of the
world through algorithms - albeit by analyzing pixels instead of
words. This talk highlights recent important technical advances in
automated media understanding, which has a variety of
applications ranging from machines emulating the human aesthetic
judgment of photographs to typical visual mining tasks such as
analyzing food images. Highlighted techniques include near-
duplicate detection, multimedia indexing and the role of machine
learning. While the first two enable visual search engines so that,
e.g. a snapshot of a smart-phone alone links the real world to
databases with information about it, machine learning ultimately is
the key to endowing machines with human capabilities of
recognition and interpretation. The talk will end by looking into the
crystal ball exploring what machines might learn from automatically
analyzing tens of thousands of hours of TV footage.

ASSISTANT PROF. DR. HAMMAD A.QURESHI
Title Artificial Intelligence and Data Mining shaping a New World Applications
from Digital Pathology to Text Recognition
Biodata Dr. Hammad Qureshi holds a PhD in Computer Science from the
University of Warwick. His main area of research interests include
Wavelet Theory, Image Processing and Pattern Recognition. He has
published in the top venues in his area of research. He has been
awarded the prestigious Marie-Curie Actions Fellowship, Institute of
Advanced Study Early Career Fellowship, Royal Society Student
Research and Travel Grant and HEC PhD Scholarships for PhD Studies.
He has more than 5 year of commercial work experience as a software
engineer and software project manager (Team Lead). He has developed
highly successful projects for Streaming Networks (Philips subsidiary),
Quartics LLC (USA) and APSTO Inc. His current research interests
involve biomedical image processing, pattern recognition and big data
analysis. He is collaborating with University of Warwick, UK and
University of Western Australia. He also has on-going collaborations
with Telenor (Pakistan) and World Tech Advisors (Australia).
Abstract The last decade or so has seen the rise of a new science of data
analysis referred to as Data Mining. Other names for the field include
Knowledge Discovery in Data and Knowledge Mining etc. and hence as
the name implies it is primarily concerned with acquisition of knowledge
from data through the applications of artificial intelligence techniques.
In a rapidly transforming world we have always been immersed in data
but the rise of high volume storage technology and better data capture
tools and technologies has made it possible to capture, store and
retrieve thousands of terrabytes of data. Hence, we see a proliferation
of data science in every field of human activity. From medical diagnosis
to reading texts on a letter all have become potential applications of
data mining. Data mining along with artificial intelligence has the
potential to lead to artificially intelligent machines that will be able to
do everything from performing a thorough medical check up to ordering
your favourite meal to advising you on the best investments for your
money. In this talk, I would discuss the rise of this new fascinating field
and how it is changing our world and would continue to do so in the
forseeable future. The talk would also present some latest research in
the field of digital pathology and handwritten text recognition carried
out in our group.

“ROBOT OPERATING SYSTEM (ROS) WORKSHOP”
Recently, ROS (Robot Operating System) has been increasing in
popularity around the world and rapidly becoming a de facto
standard for writing interoperable and reusable robot software.
It provides libraries and tools to help software developers and
researchers create robot applications. ROS is being used for
many of the world's most exciting and capable robots, such as
in industry and entertainment. Additionally, developers can
learn and gain access freely to the comprehensive developer
community and support forum for ROS.
The ROS workshop at M-CAIT 2016 will primarily teach
participants how to use ROS in their robotics research and
development works. Both simulation and with real robots,
namely Turtlebot, will be used to gain some hands-on
experience on the ROS. The workshop is designed for beginners
and professionals, providing basic and intermediate concepts of
how the ROS works, such as for autonomous robot navigation
for SLAM, visualization and programming. Therefore, no
previous research or ROS experience is required.
Content
1. Introduction and overview to ROS
2. Using ROS simulation
3. Using ROS on Turtlebot for SLAM
4. Understanding ROS programming framework

“AUGMENTED REALITY (AR) WORKSHOP”
Augmented Realty (AR) is a technology which combines real
and virtual worlds, by registering virtual objects with the real
world with AR, and making it interactive in real time. AR
applications are now available on most smartphones and
tablets. Digi-Capital expects that AR have extremely high
potential in society and they predict AR will be worth $150
billion by the year 2020.
The objective of the workshop is to give mobile AR application
development skills to participants using the Unity and Vuforia
platforms. This course starst with the theory and concept of AR.
Trainer will then provide hands-on examples to the participant.
The course will focus on using leveraging high-quality AR

“MULTIMEDIA INFORMATION RETRIEVAL" by Prof. Dr. Stefan Rüger
This tutorial will examine the challenges and opportunities of Multimedia Information Retrieval, ie, image, video and music search engines. Computer technology has changed our access to information tremendously We used to search authors or titles (which we had to know) in library cards in order to locate relevant books; now we can issue keyword searches within the full text of unimaginably large book repositories to identify the authors, titles and locations of relevant resources. What about the corresponding challenge of finding multimedia by fragments, examples and excerpts? Rather than asking for a music piece by artist and title, can we hum its tune to find it? Can doctors submit scans of a patient to identify medically similar images of diagnosed cases in a database? Can your mobile phone take a picture of a statue and return to you resources about its artist via a service that it sends this picture to? Some of the challenges of these questions are given by the semantic gap between what computers can index and high-level human concepts; related to this is an inherent technological limitation of automated annotation of images from pixels alone. Other challenges are given by polysemy, ie, the many meanings and interpretations that are inherent in visual material and the corresponding wide range of a user’s information need. This tutorial will demonstrate how these challenges can be tackled by automated processing and machine learning and by utilising the skills of the user, for example through harnessing and directing browsing activities with “relevance feedback”, thus putting the user centre stage. Other automated processing methods that discover and utilise world knowledge in the form of wikipedia (an online, linked, multilingual and open content
encyclopedia) will be shown to not only improve multimedia retrieval but also give surprising insights into the human nature.
