The 2018 Silvio Zavala Award,for Colonial History in the Americas
On September 18th, there
was a meeting to evaluate
the Silvio Zavala Award candi-
datures we received, in honor
of the founding president of the
History Commission.
The jury, by unanimous
decision, decided to give this
Award to Dr. Oscar Mazín, as
his career meets the charac-
teristics and conditions of the
call.

Oscar Mazín, por considerar
que su trayectoria reúne las
características y condiciones
de la convocatoria.
Dr. Mazín has a Ph.D. in
History from the School of
Advanced Studies in the So-
cial Sciences, France. He is
currently a professor and re-
searcher with the Historical
Studies Center in El Colegio de
Mexico, and he is a member
of the National System of Re-
searchers, level II.

Among his many works, the following stand
out: El Cabildo catedral de Valladolid de Michoacán (col-
mich, 1996); Una ventana al mundo hispánico (colmex,
2006) and Gestores de la real justicia (colmex, 2007).
The Award jury was composed of Dra. María
Eugenia Zavala from El Colegio de México; Dra.
Johanna Von Grafenstein from the Dr. José María
Luis Mora Research Institute; and Dra. Patricia Es-
candón from the National Autonomous University
of Mexico.
The History Commission extends its deepest
congratulations to Dr. Mazín.
On September 19, there was a meeting to evaluate the
Pan-American Award we received, for the best doctoral thesis in
the general field of American History, of the centuries 19th and
20th Centuries.
The Prize was unanimously declared void because none of
the candidates registered met the requirements of the respective
call.
Nevertheless, the jury decided to give a special mention to the
following thesis: El martinato: configuración del autoritarismo cívico-mil-
itar, continuismo y herencia política. El Salvador 1931-1944, written by
Dr. Luis Gerardo Monterrosa Cubías, and Moralización y catolicismo
al arribo de la televisión. Ciudad de México y Bogotá, 1950-1965,
written by Dra. Laura Camila Ramírez Bonilla, for studying the pe-
riod indicated in the call and demonstrating academic merit.
The 2018 Pan-American History Award for Best Doctoral Thesis in fields related to 19th and 20th
Century, general Historyof the Americas.

The American Anthropology Journal of the Pan
American Institute of Geography and History invites
academics to send thematic dossier proposals for
consideration in upcoming editions.
Proposals can be sent to the Journal (antropo-
[email protected]) and should include
the following information:
1. Name or title of the theme of the dossier.
2. Objectives and justification of the theme (500
words).
3. A provisional list of possible articles that will be
included in the dossier, as well as the names of
participating writers, including a brief résumé
for each.
4. The résumé of the coordinator of the thematic
dossier.
5. The proposals will be considered by the Edito-
rial Committee of the journal. Proposals with
an international perspective that include with
authors from different regions in Latin America
and the Caribbean will be privileged.
6. Once a proposal is accepted by the journal’s
Editorial Committee, the coordinator (or coor-
dinators) will be responsible for:
• Posting the ‘Call for papers’ in collaboration
with the journal’s Editorial Committee.
• Contacting potential authors to collaborate
on the thematic edition.
• Carrying out a preliminary evaluation of the
papers, together with the Editorial Commit-
tee of the journal.
• Suggesting at least two peer reviewers for
each paper.
7. All the articles will be peer reviewed according
to the double-blind system.
