Welcome to the 154th Great Frederick Fair! The preparation for each fair begins before the previous fair has even ended. It is important to us that we offer a safe environment, full of activities
and events that are both educational and entertaining for the public.
What's GREAT about The Great Frederick Fair? The answer is the COMMUNITY, for the Fair would not be possible without the people in our community: volunteers, exhibitors, vendors, seasonal and full time staff members, board members, etc.
It is important to acknowledge the dedication and hard work of those people who make it possible to hold an event of this magnitude. Even though the event is in September, efforts are made year-round to plan and execue a successful fair. It is our goal each year to maintain the GREAT and to make improvements, whether it’s upgrading the buildings, renovating the barns, adding new entry classes, featuring new entertainers or offering a wide variety of carnival rides and food vendors.
The Great Frederick Fair is the heart of Frederick County. The Fair is a community gathering for socializing and a place for exhibitors to showcase and share their successes. Exhibits range from livestock to plants, vegetables, fruits, baked goods, quilts, photos, crafts and much more.
The Great Frederick Fair exists to promote agriculture and the education of our youth about the industry of agriculture. According to the Frederick County Office of Economic Development, Frederick County is the largest agricultural county in Maryland, covering more than 202,000 acres with over 1400 farms. The Fair is Frederick County’s largest agricultural classroom, hosting thousands of elementary school children on field trips and offering educational opportunities around the grounds for the fair-going public.
The Great Frederick Fair is rockin’ early with the TransIT bus rollin’ around town creating excitement about our annual event in September! This year’s theme is Barn in the USA.
Nearly 250,000 visitors pass through the fairgrounds annually during our nine day event and we’d like to thank you for coming to support the Fair. We know you have many options when it comes to where you choose to spend your time and money, and we appreciate that you selected The Great Frederick Fair, Frederick County’s single largest community gathering!
While walking around and taking in the sights, smells and sounds of the Fair, be sure to snap some GREAT photos and share on our social media pages (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter @GrFrederickFair, using hashtags #GreatFrederickFair and #2016gff).

Mehrl Mayne began farming with his father at a young age on the 170 acre
farm his father purchased on the Courthouse steps. Today, the Mayne family
operates Mayne’s Tree Farm right outside of Buckeystown. Their operation has
diversified to include Christmas trees, sweet corn, pumpkins, strawberries, asparagus,
soybeans and more.
The years of successful operation and involvement were highlighted recently when the
Mehrl Mayne family was named the 2015 Frederick County Farm Family of the Year by
the Agricultural Business Council in conjunction with The Great Frederick Fair and the
Agriculture Education PR Committee.
The farm originally served as a dairy farm for 10 years from 1956-1966. In 1966 the
first Christmas trees were planted, with the first harvest 11 years later in 1977. Mehrl
rented the farm from his father for 10 years before purchasing it from his parents over
15 years ago. In 1977 Mehrl married Charlotte. Their love for farming and agriculture
helped Mayne’s Tree Farm thrive. Charlotte was also a huge supporter of agriculture until
her passing on July 30, 2008.
Mehrl has been very active in the farming community with affiliations in the Farm
Bureau, and the Maryland, Pennsylvania, and National Christmas Tree Association.
Mehrl is currently serving on the Board for the Frederick County Farm Bureau.
This fourth generation farm is operated today by Mr. Mayne, along with his fiancée Julie
Spencer; son, Jason Mayne; daughter, Leanne Phillips, and her husband, Travis Phillips.
At 84 Mehrl’s mother, Janice, still lives on the farm. Mehrl credits much of his success
to his father who passed away on May 1, 2015. Mehrl is very proud of the grandchildren
who are also beginning to be involved in the farm from a young age. Mayne’s has over
50 acres of Christmas trees, 45 acres of field corn, 25 acres of soybeans, 10 acres of
pumpkins, 6 acres of sweet corn, along with a small amount of strawberries and asparagus.
The farm also uses innovative farm practices including no-till, cover crop programs,
and irrigation. Mayne has a passion for educating the public and the next generation by
opening his farm for school tours, agricultural marketing professionals, international
visitors, and the Chamber of Commerce.
