Whether or not you fancy yourself an astronomy nerd, a truly incredible event will sweep the United States this August. Americans will witness the greatest solar eclipse of the last hundred years. On average, solar eclipses happen a handful of times every year. But, total solar eclipses, when the moon completely blocks out the sun, occur only every 18 years or so. Monday, August 21, 2017, for just a few minutes the sun will pass behind the moon, creating a beautiful twilight effect with large streaks of light dancing in silhouette around the moon. It will be the first total solar eclipse in the history of the country to pass solely over the continental U.S. How long will the eclipse last? The eclipse’s timing depends on where you are in relation to the “path of totality.” The best case scenario is that it will last a scant 2 minutes and 40 seconds. Only those within the path of totality will see the full eclipse. The 70-mile-wide path connects South Carolina to Oregon, including North Carolina, Georgia, Tennes-see, Kentucky, Illinois, Missouri, Kansas, Nebraska, Wyoming and Idaho. Wyoming’s Grand Teton National Park is hands-down the best place in the country to witness the once-in-a-life time event. What do you need to view the eclipse? Solar viewing glasses are available from a handful of manufacturers. These specs allow the viewer to stare directly at the sun right before and after the event without going blind.

Arresting TimeA police officer in a small town stoppeda motorist who was speeding down Main Street. “But officer”, the man began, “I can explain.” “Quiet!” snapped the officer. “I’m going to let you spend the night in jail until the chief gets back.” “But officer, I just wanted to say,” “And I said be quiet! You’re going to jail!” A few hours later the officer looked in on his prisoner and said, “Lucky for you, the chief’s at his daughter’s wedding. He’ll be in a good mood when he gets back.” Don’t count on it, answered the guy in the cell. “I’m the groom.”

Thyroid Tests The thyroid gland is a butterfly shaped gland in the neck. It is about two inches long and contains a section on each side of the windpipe. The main role of the thyroid is to produce hormones that regulate your body’s metabolism. Two of the main hormones are known as T3 and T4. T4 accounts for 90 percent of the thyroid hormone production, It is converted in the liver into T3, which is the active form of the hormone. When your level of thyroid hormone drops, your pituitary gland releases thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH), which stimulates the production and release ofT3 and T4. Hyperthyroidism is a condition in which the thyroid gland releases too much thyroid hormone. The excess hormone causes the body’s metabolism to speed up. This can lead to increased heart rate, nervousness, tremor, weight loss, insomnia, vision problems and menstrual irregularities and dry, irritated or puffy eyes. Hypothyroidism is the condition where the thyroid doesn’t produce enough thyroid hormones. Your metabolism slows, and patients can
experience weight gain, fatigue, forgetfulness, dry skin, heavy menstruation, mood swings, intolerance to cold and constipation. 80 percent of the people with thyroid problems are women. Blood tests at the Wyoming Health Fairs check for thyroid hormone as well as thyroid stimulating hormone. When I visit with folks at Health Fairs around the state, there always seems to be a new case of someone with an abnormal thyroid blood test. Once a patient has been diagnosed with thyroid problems, proper treatment can be started. People who make too much thyroid hormone can be treated with medications or radiation therapy to slow production of thyroid hormone. In some cases, part of the entire gland may be removed. Patients with hypothyroidism often require life-long thyroid replacement therapy. Finding the right dose can be tricky because the level of need changes. These folks need regular monitoring to ensure they are getting the right amount of replacement and not too much.

Join us for a HIKE to the INTERMITTENT SPRINGS, September 7th @ 3:pm. Intermittent Springs, found in Swift Creek Canyon east of Afton , is a fascinating attraction. Is it one of western Wyoming’s most awesome natural features this side of Yellowstone. It is the largest of only three fluctuating springs known in the world. The Intermittent Spring was called “the spring that breathes” by Native Americans who frequented the area before settlement by Mormon pioneers. The spring puts on a good show starting in late summer through the fall when groundwater tables are lower. The fluctuation in flow, which seems very mysterious, is cause by a siphon effect of a cavern that fills with water and the crevices that feed and expel it.

Why Yoga, Tai Chi and Meditation are Good for You:By: Robert Preidt HealthDay News
Relax your mind and then consider this: The physical and mental health benefits of pursuits like yoga and meditation begin in your genes, a new review suggests. The researchers reviewed 18 studies, involving a total of 846 people, to examine how the behavior of genes is affected by yoga, tai chi, meditation and other mind-body interventions. The conclusion: Such activities reverse molecular reations in DNA that cause poor health and depression. “Millions of people around the world already enjoy the health benefits of mind-body interventions like yoga or meditation, but what they perhaps don’t realize is that these benefits begin at a molecular level and can change the way our genetic code goes about its business,” said lead researcher Ivana Buric. “These activities are leaving what we call a molecular signature in our cells, which reverses the effect that stress or anxiety would have on the body by changing how our genes are expressed. Put simply, [mind-body interventions] cause the brain to steer our DNA processes along a path which improves our well-being.” More study is needed to understand these effects fully and how mind-body interventions compare to other healthy activities and dietary habits.
