Howe's tails call of the coin-tossallowed for the Bulldogs to deferto the second half which allowedHowe's defense to make a bigstand to start the game and turnaway an opponent on their firstpossession for only the third timethis season.

Howe drove to the Whitesboroside of the field but forced a fourthand short which the Bulldogs wereunable to convert. The Bearcatsthen capitalized on the short fieldand went three plays and 54 yardsresulting in a Weston Hickman18-yard touchdown run givingWhitesboro an early 7-0 lead with2:29 left in the first quarter.

Howe's next possession ended in apunt and Whitesboro then misseda 32-yard field goal which hookedwide left.

The Bulldogs got a break whenHunter Cheatham punted the balldown the field and Parker Blountrecovered a fumble by thereturner. The Dogs were in greatshape at the Bearcats 42 yard lineand were once again in position toconvert a fourth down, but anoffsides pentalty took the fourth-and-short to a fourth-and-long and

Howe had to punt which forcedWhitesboro to start from their ownsix yard line. The Bulldogs defensekept up the pace with an 11-yardsack by Cameron Blesi that forced aBearcat punt.

Howe was in great shape at theBearcat 34 yard line, but ChaseHarvey's first pass of the drive wasintercepted, giving Whitesboro nearmid-field.

Both teams exchanged punts beforethe the first half clock expired andWhitesboro went shocked andslumped into the locker room with a7-0 lead over Howe.

Thanks to Clay Marshall's coin-tosscall of tails, Howe took the ball toopen the second half and promptlyraced down the field on only threeplays that covered 75 yards. ChaseHarvey threw a quick pass down thesidelines to Mason Riggs whooutran everyone on the field for a63-yard dink-and-dunk touchdown.Calley Vick's PAT came up shortand Howe trailed 7-6 with 11:20remaining in the third.

Howe started to take control of thegame on the next possession whenlinebacker Andrew Griffinintercepted a Scout Sanders passwhich gave to Dogs the ball at theWhitesboro 33 yard line. Four playslater, the Harvey to Harveyconnection put the go-ahead pointson the board for a moment, but the

Downtown Howe-lloweena monster-mash hit

Anyone who's ever put on an eventunderstands that nothing isguaranteed - especially the firsttime an event is held. TheChamber of Commerce'sDowntown Howe-lloween was thebrainchild of several individualsand organizations and the resultwas an amazing turnout for a two-and-a-half-hour event.

Most vendors that lined up in thestreets ran out of candy to handout. The First United MethodistChurch brought many games andmuch candy and helped make theevent the success that it was.

It appears now that this is anannual event after the successfulevening.

An older man was telling a storythe other day about hisgrandparents and it caused me tothink back to when I was a kid andthe relationship I had with mymamaw and papaw. Now that I’molder, I realize that grandparentslook forward to spoiling theirgrandchildren and are usually justas excited. When I was growingup, my dad and his dad workedtogether in their own constructionbusiness and every so often in thesummer, my papaw would take mehome with him. Sometimes, Iwould stay for a whole week andthose adventures were some of mymost cherished childhoodmemories. On the way to thecountry, it was not uncommon forme to become car sick because theroads were so curvy, but hangingmy head out the window did bringsome relief. When we arrived, Iwould feel weak and mygrandmother would say I looked aswhite as a sheet, but with heradministering every remedy shecould think of, it didn’t take longfor me to recover. You see, I wasthe first child and the firstgrandchild, so with being thecenter of attention you could say Iwas a little spoiled. They werealways squeezing me and kissingme so much that I could hardlybreathe, but it’s a good feeling toknow you are loved.

To a boy of seven or eight yearsold, houses and yards seem huge, but have you noticed when yougrow up how everything seems toshrink? I drove by a few years ago

and hardly recognized the place. Itwas so tiny and even the landwhich seemed like a vastplantation to me back then wasactually more like five acres. As akid, their house looked beautiful tome but it was really just an oldfarmhouse that my papaw had triedto patch and piece together. Thefront yard seemed as big as afootball field and I remember oneday my papaw wanted to see if hecould beat me in a foot race fromthe driveway to the garden. I canstill feel the hot summer air againstmy face while out of the corner ofmy eye I could see his bare feetflying past me. I slowed down andstarted laughing as I knew he wasnot feeling well. He had adebilitating kidney disease and Idiscovered later that even thoughhe did not say anything that day,the overexertion caused him a lotof pain and we never did thatagain. He did it because he lovedme and just wanted to play andhave some fun with me. In behindthe house, the yard steeply droppedoff into what many people call aholler, and if you were willing toclimb down a steep cliff, youwould find yourself on the bank ofthe Kentucky river. Across theroad were fields of tall grass as faras you could see sprinkled withpatches of large trees and if youwere real quiet sometimes youcould hear them majestically swayin the wind along with the lonelysound of a cawing crow.

I remember one time, they drovetheir old station wagon in the creekand parked it right in the middle. We rolled up our pants and wadedout into the cold water. Theystarted washing the car while I wasthrilled to explore and see what Icould find. My papaw would alsotake me fishing in his old woodenboat and then after he cleaned ourcatch, my mamaw would fry themand make cornbread as they wereso delicious. At bedtime I wouldsleep with them in a massivefeather-bed. It was such a feelingof security like I was in anenchanted castle where everythingfelt magical and larger than life. Inthe winter I loved to throw paperwads in the fireplace and can still

He was born January 2, 1920, inVilla de Castano, a tiny village inMexico. Garcia was one of tenchildren born to destitute farmworkers. In 1923, to improve theirfortunes, they came to the UnitedStates, like so many otherimmigrants from so many otherlands. They settled in theSugarland area, just outsideHouston. As soon as he was oldenough, Garcia joined his parentsworking in the fields. Like manyother farm workers, he workedhard, but his education wassporadic.

In 1942, Garcia enlisted in thearmy. America had become hishome, and his home had beenattacked. He was determined toserve in its defense. Aninfantryman, he was wounded atthe Allied invasion of Normandyon D-Day in 1944. Awarded thePurple Heart, he soon returned toduty. He later earned the BronzeStar as well.

In November 1944, as Americantroops were beginning to push intoNazi Germany, Garcia and his menfound themselves in a desperatebattle. They were pinned down bymachine gun fire, and Garcia waswounded. He carefully crawled toa position near the machine gunnest, hurled a grenade, and shotthree enemy troops to take out thegun. A second machine gunopened fire, and Garcia again

crawled over to also take it outsingle-handedly. The men weresaved, and the army’s position wassecured. For his actions, he wasgiven the Medal of Honor.

President Harry S. Trumanpresented him with the medal in aWhite House ceremony on August23, 1945. Shortly afterward, hisnative land of Mexico awardedhim the Merito Militar, one of thehighest awards in the MexicanArmy, for his valor. Garcia washonorably discharged in 1946,leaving with the rank of staffsergeant.

For many veterans returning home,it is often difficult to fathom howmuch they have changed becauseof their experiences while so littlehas changed for those they leftbehind. Such was often the casefor World War II veterans. Garciahimself would discover this muchto the horrors of himself and thenation when he stepped into arestaurant in Richmond, justoutside Houston, in September1945 – not even one month afterthe war ended and his WhiteHouse appearance.

Garcia’s face had been innewspapers all over the Houstonarea. His story was well-knownby this point. In spite of hisservice, in spite of his heroism, inspite of saving the lives of hisfellow soldiers on multipleoccasions – putting his own life atrisk to save others -- the restaurantowners refused to serve himbecause his skin was not the rightcolor. Insulted, Garcia beganarguing with the owner. Theowner then beat him with abaseball bat. To make mattersworse, police arrested Garcia andcharged him in the incident.

Garcia had shed blood defendinghis adopted country and thefreedoms for which it stood. Nowhis blood was shed because ofbigotry. Journalists across thenation condemned the treatment ofthe Medal of Honor recipient.Former Gov. James Allred steppedup and served as his attorney.Through his powerful defenders,Garcia was able to win delays for atrial. In 1947, prosecutors quietlydismissed the case.

Afterward, he was able to get hisAmerican citizenship in 1947 andworked with civil rights groups tofight segregation and other unjustlaws. He returned to school andearned his high school diploma in1951.

He eventually landed a job as acounselor with the VeteransAdministration. Here, he spent the
