Thanks to our generous community, the campaign has raised over $115,000 to date, helping over 432 El Camino

College students with an average grant of $250.

Unfortunately, the need far exceeds the available funds. Over $600,000 has been requested from students, and this amount continues to

increase as the COVID climate resumes.

Additionally, $30,000 in donations have been received in support of the Warrior Pantry drive-thru, which continues to assist our food insecure students.

A special thank you to our generous donors who immediately gave to the newly established Student emergency Fund and Warrior pantry during the coviD-19 crisis. As of June 30, 2020, nearly $140,000 was raised for vital support of el camino college students in need.

Student #1: “I am currently homeless and have 2 children under supervision of DCFS and I need a safe environment for family reunification to happen and so I can have a safe environment to study and continue my career. Being homeless right now causes a lot of unnecessary stress.”

Student #2: “My brother just underwent surgery and my mom lost her job due to COVID-19. I too lost my job leaving my household with no source of income coming in. I thank you for your confidence and willingness to help me and various other nursing students to achieve our educational goals.”

In March 2020, the El Camino College Foundation established a new Student Emergency Fund to assist El Camino College students adversely affected by COVID-19.

Given these interesting times, El Camino College looks a little different this year, with online classes continuing this fall, and virtual courses extended into the 2021 winter and spring sessions. However, we are fortunate that certain courses, defined as “essential” under state directives, are allowed to be taught in-person, despite COVID-19 restrictions. These classes meet requirements in the Allied Health and Public Health programs, Emergency Services, and Manufacturing sectors. These programs meet the State of California’s definition of essential: workers and instructors supporting academies and training facilities and courses for the purpose of graduating students and cadets that comprise the essential workforce for all identified critical sectors.

We are proud that El Camino College maintains high health and safety standards, while sustaining the academic excellence and personalized attention that is synonymous with an El Camino College education.

As always, the El Camino College Foundation is here to support our students every step of their journey to the graduation stage. Despite these uncertain times, we are hopeful for a rewarding and healthy year. Please know that my ‘remote’ door is always open to you and I welcome the chance to catch up!

Warmly,Andrea SalaExecutive Director

Student #1: “The Warrior Pantry has helped me so much because I am homeless and I would come to school every day without food. So to have the Warrior Pantry here – it helps a lot.” – Antoya

Student #2: “The new drive-by policy with the Warrior Pantry has really helped my family. My mom and I are both out of work right now and shopping has been really difficult. The team working here has been so helpful and their kind and caring hearts show through their smiles.” – Faith

Student #3: “Ever since I have been coming to ECC’s Warrior Pantry, I have been making more affordable meals and saving money. I really appreciate my school and the community for all of their hard work and contributions. I am a single woman who is going to school, work, and trying to balance a limited budget. Going to the WP has helped me stretch a lot while on a limited income. The hygiene products, food and toiletries are a big help. Thank you ECC!” – Jenell

Six months ago, no one would have anticipated remote learning would continue into the fall and winter semesters. But thanks to funds secured through donations to the ECC Foundation South Bay Promise and state and federal funding sources, El Camino College acquired 2,000 laptops and 2,000 MiFi units (portable devices that offer internet connectivity), to lend to students in need of computers to access virtual learning.

“We know online learning may not be the first choice for some students,” said Dena P. Maloney, President of El Camino College. “Not having access to the needed technology can also be an obstacle. This considerable investment shows how committed we are to ensuring student success, especially during this challenging time of the pandemic.”

In addition to the laptop loan program, El Camino College provides a full array of support services to assist students during remote instruction, including online tutoring, online resources through the Library and Learning Resource Center, online counseling and educational planning, and technical support.

The purchase of these laptops was made possible through several funding sources, including the El Camino College Foundation South Bay Promise program, the federal COVID-19 block grant and CARES Act, and Student Equity and Achievement funding from the State of California.

The Presidential Scholar program at El Camino College recognizes outstanding graduates who have earned a 3.7 GPA or higher and will be transferring to a four-year college or university. For Miyung Kim, who was named the 2020 Presidential Scholar for the Fine Arts Division, this task was no easy feat. Earning her degree took longer than she expected, but like a true Warrior, she persevered, found her passion in photography, and graduated this past spring with the Class of 2020.

“I am honored and humbled to be selected as the 2020 Presidential Scholar for the Fine Arts Division,” said Miyung, who deferred her transfer plans for a year due to the COVID-19 pandemic. “At first, I never expected to reach my educational goals, but now, I am ready to pursue my goals even further. I now realize how having an education can affect my life.”

At El Camino, Miyung won several awards for her photographs, including an honorable mention in the national Associated College Press 2018 Photo of the Year contest. The photography honors and Presidential Scholar award were certainly big highlights from her time at El Camino, but it was the small moments that made her El Camino experience special.

Kim, who graduated with an impressive cumulative total GPA of 3.87, earned her AS degree in her third language of English. She admits obtaining her degree in a foreign language was very difficult and credits her academic successes to the wonderful people in her life who have influenced her and the nurturing environment provided by El Camino College.

Generally, students in El Camino College’s South Bay Promise program perform better than their non-South Bay Promise counterparts. This fall semester, El Camino College welcomed more than 1,300 full-time South Bay Promise students, which is an increase of 50% more students over the last year. Prior to that, the South Bay Promise program experienced record growth from 2018 to 2019 of 78% (489 vs. 868 students).

The South Bay Promise program supports recent high school graduates by providing two years of free enrollment fees to El Camino College. Additional benefits of the program include priority registration, specialized student support services, dedicated counselors, and access to loaner laptops. This promotes greater accessibility to higher education and increased completion rates, ultimately creating a more educated workforce and new economic development opportunities in the South Bay.

We are happy to share some interesting South Bay Promise trends and retention growth rates with you.

El Camino College Partners with Red Rocks Community College to Form Aerospace Development Center

President Maloney to Retire at the End of the School Year

El Camino College recently announced a partnership with Red Rocks Community College in Colorado to establish the first community college collaboration to create a “Space, Cyber & Supply Talent Development Center” (SCSTDC). The partnership bridges two different aerospace hubs and maximizes opportunities for economic and workforce development goals in STEM and the aerospace industry. Both colleges have shown strong results in aligning classes with jobs and helping students obtain workplace relevant experience.

“By aligning the efforts of Red Rocks and El Camino, we will be able to work together to support the robust aerospace sectors in each of our respective regions. I hope the SCSTDC becomes a juggernaut of collaboration for the space industry and most importantly helps people who are unemployed and looking for new opportunities,” said Dena P. Maloney, Ed.D., President of El Camino College. The colleges determined three major partnership goals: 1. Establish a new economic and workforce development

educational effort focused on each respective institution’s strengths in aerospace, space, cyber security, and supply chain training

2. Share specific company connections to further expand opportunities and placements

3. Reciprocity in instruction and shared best practices

“America’s leadership in space is vitally important to the nation’s future and critically depends on growing our aerospace workforce, with the needed STEM skills. Community colleges play an important role in talent development and jobs bridge, particularly in aerospace hubs such as Colorado and Southern California. It is important for the Federal government and the Congress to invest in education and job training to ensure our continued leadership in space,” said Lt. Gen. (Ret.) Michael A. Hamel, a former member of the Red Rocks Community College Foundation Board of Directors and the former Commander of the Air Force Space and Missile Systems Center. “By working together, Red Rocks and El Camino are advancing an ambitious plan that could serve as a national model.”

Dena P. Maloney, Ed.D., the Superintendent/President of El Camino College, will retire when her current contract ends at the conclusion of the 2020-21 academic year. President Maloney made the announcement during the July 20 meeting of the El Camino Community College District Board of Trustees.

“Serving at El Camino College has been the highlight of my career in higher education,” President Maloney said. “There’s something special about this institution and its mission. It’s been an honor to work alongside so many talented colleagues in the faculty, staff, and administration who are committed to making the El Camino experience transformative for our students.”

President Maloney was selected as El Camino College’s sixth Superintendent/President by the Board of Trustees in October 2015. She began her tenure in February 2016. During President Maloney’s administration, El Camino College has achieved a number of important milestones, including: • Implementation of Guided Pathways, the Vision for Success, and a new Student Centered Funding Formula• Continued improvement in student success metrics such as graduation/transfer rates and number of degrees/certificates awarded• Massive expansion of the South Bay Promise program

• Successful conclusion of the El Camino College/Compton College partnership• Significant progress on the El Camino College’s capital construction program, including completion of the Student Services Building, Gymnasium, and Administration Building, with the Pool & Classroom Building set to open later this summer, and groundbreaking for the new Social & Behavioral Science Building and the Arts Complex in fall 2020

“President Maloney’s service at El Camino College has been exemplary,” said Board President Bill Beverly. “She has shepherded this institution through a remarkable period of growth and improvement, with a singular focus on student success. Her leadership, experience, and insight have been invaluable. We offer President Maloney our heartfelt gratitude and best wishes for her endeavors, and golf scores.”

In the coming months, the El Camino Community College District Board of Trustees will launch a nationwide search for President Maloney’s successor.

“It’s been an honor to work alongside so many talented colleagues in the faculty, staff, and

administration who are committed to making the

El Camino experience transformative for our

students.” — Dena P. Maloney,

Superintendant/President, El Camino College

Remembering the “Old Normal” at El Camino CollegeIt seems like just yesterday, not eight months ago, that we were on campus with so much activity and many celebrations taking

place. March 17th was our last day in the office, and now we’re used to daily Zoom meetings, online conferences, virtual happy hours, and telecommuting. The one thing that has remained constant is our dedication to the students at El Camino College. Here’s a walk down memory lane from 2019, and a nod to what life will look like again soon.

ConnectionsFALL 2020SUPPORTING THE MISSION OF EL CAMINO COLLEGE

We are struggling to make ends meet, we rely on school lunches and food banks, we are behind on 3 months of rent, not to mention the medical bills are high. My science class starts in 2 weeks and I’m really worried because I do not have money to buy the books/materials. I do not want to burden you

by asking for assistance in rent as I really just want to ensure I can have WiFi and the books to be able to take my summer session classes. I refuse to let my financial situation determine my success. Please please help me cover my books and WiFi so I can continue on my path to become a nurse. I am requesting exactly $397.54 as this would completely cover the books and 2 months of WiFi service that I need so I can succeed this summer- I really need this and would be forever grateful.”

Student #3: “Receiving this grant, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic, will help alleviate so much financial stress in terms of continuing to buy any nursing school materials I need, as well as not having to place myself in an ‘essential workers’ work environment as often and place that time more towards my studies. I thank you for your confidence and willingness to help me and various other nursing students to achieve our educational goals.”

In March 2020, the El Camino College Foundation established a new Student Emergency Fund to assist El Camino College students adversely affected by COVID-19.
