FORT MORGAN (pop. 11,271) (elev. 4,330 feet) is the county seat of Morgan County. Fort Morgan is located on Interstate 76 in Northeastern Colorado and is only an hour drive from Denver and Denver International Airport. Founded in 1864 as a military post to protect gold rushers and other travelers on the Overland Trail, Fort Morgan was originally called Camp Tyler, then Camp Wardell. The town assumed its present name in 1866 in honor of Colonel Christopher Anthony Morgan. Morgan was born in Cincinnati, Ohio. Before the civil war he was partners with his father and brothers in the publishing firm of E. Morgan and Sons. He joined the Union Army during the Civil War and rose to the rank of captain. His last position was Inspector General of the Department of the Missouri. Morgan was killed on January 20, 1866, when he was warming his room and the fire in the gas stove blew out. He never saw the post that was named in his honor. The town today is one of quiet tree-lined streets, many with beautiful, well-maintained homes and large lush yards. MORGAN COUNTY (Pop. 28,110) is one of the smallest (1,296 square miles) but most agriculturally rich counties in the state. Producing a wide variety of crops, including sugar beets, wheat, beans, alfalfa, onions, barley, and potatoes, Morgan County relies on Fort Morgan as a shipping and distribution hub. The area is also known for its beef, sheep and dairy ranches.

Other incorporated communities in our area each have a rich and unique history along with their own personal identity. They are:

Wiggins (pop. 925) is approximately 15 miles west of Fort Morgan on I-76. Established in 1872, the town was named for Major Oliver P. Wiggins, otherwise known as "Old Scout" Wiggins. Wiggins was a Canadian and once an employee of the Hudson Bay Company, he came to Colorado in 1834. Major Wiggins served as a guide and scout for Captain John C. Fremont, on some of his explorations through northern Colorado in the 1840's. He also accompanied Kit Carson for 12 years on his expeditions. The town was originally called Vallery, then Corona, before it became Wiggins around 1894. Brush (pop. 5,270) is just 10 miles East of Fort Morgan on I-76 and was established in 1882. Brush was a key supply station and cattle shipping point on the Texas-Montana Trail . The city of Brush! was named for a pioneer cattleman of the South Platte Valley, Jared L. Brush. Hillrose (pop. 296) located Northeast of Fort Morgan was established in 1900 and named for the sister of the woman who deeded the land for the town site. The sister's name was Rose Hill. Log Lane Village (pop. 1,025) is just outside of Fort Morgan and was established in 1955. First conceived as a site for a liquor store outside of "dry" Fort Morgan, and then expanded for a community. Originally every building, according to ordinance, was built from or sided with logs-hence the name. The ordinance was dropped in the mid 1960's.

Additionally the area has several unincorporated towns: Goodrich - was established in 1882 named for Gus T. Goodrich a pioneer and member of the first Board of County Commissioners. Hoyt - was established around 1882 and was named for the son of the original homesteader Mrs. Sidney Davis Hoyt. Orchard - was established in 1890. The "Orchard" was a large grove of stunted cottonwoods, which, at a distance, appeared as an eastern apple orchard, and a welcome sight in staging days across treeless plains. Snyder - was established in 1882 and named for J. W. Snyder, a pioneer cattleman. Weldona - was established in 1866 and named for either a resident or an Army general named Weldon. Later it was changed to Deuel and then to Weldona.

Rising over 250 feet above the plains, the eroded columns of sandstone have resisted eons of natural forces that have eroded the surrounding area. Of great interest to paleontolo-gists and anthropologists, the buttes have yielded several prehistoric animal discoveries. The Pawnee National

Grassland and Buttes are open to the public. Be prepared for an amazing off road adventure as you travel the trail to the Pawnee Buttes.
