L’hebdo 23/10/19 Originally there wasn’t going to be a L’hebdo this week but we have had so many achievements from our pupils that we thought we needed to celebrate them. We have reached the end of a busy half term. We hope that all of the children have a good break and that they come back well rested and ready to learn on Monday 4 th November. Please can we ask that when students come back after half term that they have a reading book and water bottle as always, as well as a coat in school with them due to the change in season. If students are cycling to school, please can you ensure that they have lights on their bicycles in order to keep them safe on the roads. On the INSET day this Friday (25 th October), staff are looking forward to some training from an external speaker from Pivotal Education who will be focussing on the Paul Dix methodology of the promotion of positive behaviour for learning. Thank you to all of the Y5 parents that attended ‘meet the class teacher’ evening this half term. We look forward to seeing parents of Y6, 7 and 8 on Wednesday 6 th November. We have analysed all of the questionnaires from the Y5 parents and discussed them at our Leadership Meeting. Some parents had indicated that they would like to know more about what the students are learning so we will be adding a section about curriculum and assessment to l’hebdo next half term to address that. Parents in all years will be invited in to a second Parents’ Evening in the spring term, when you will have a chance to speak to all of your child’s subject teachers about their progress in each subject. A written report will then be sent home in the summer term. Happy half term holiday! Regards Mrs Frost

Originally there wasn’t going to be a L’hebdo this week but we have had so many achievements from

our pupils that we thought we needed to celebrate them.

We have reached the end of a busy half term. We hope that all of the children have a good break and

that they come back well rested and ready to learn on Monday 4th November. Please can we ask that

when students come back after half term that they have a reading book and water bottle as always, as

well as a coat in school with them due to the change in season. If students are cycling to school, please

can you ensure that they have lights on their bicycles in order to keep them safe on the roads.

On the INSET day this Friday (25th October), staff are looking forward to some training from an

external speaker from Pivotal Education who will be focussing on the Paul Dix methodology of the

promotion of positive behaviour for learning.

Thank you to all of the Y5 parents that attended ‘meet the class teacher’ evening this half term. We

look forward to seeing parents of Y6, 7 and 8 on Wednesday 6th November.

We have analysed all of the questionnaires from the Y5 parents and discussed them at our Leadership

Meeting. Some parents had indicated that they would like to know more about what the students are

learning so we will be adding a section about curriculum and assessment to l’hebdo next half term to

address that.

Parents in all years will be invited in to a second Parents’ Evening in the spring term, when you will

have a chance to speak to all of your child’s subject teachers about their progress in each subject. A

written report will then be sent home in the summer term.

Happy half term holiday!

Regards

Mrs Frost

Our Education Welfare Officer will be doing some LATE gate spot checks this term. We are

experiencing a lot of pupils still coming up the drive after the bell has gone at 8.45, consequently

missing lining up with their classes on the playground and start of registration at 8.50

Congratulations to all the Year 7 and 8 pupils who took part in the Bikeability Levels 2 and 3 and Fix

last Thursday and Friday. The course is aimed at ensuring the safety of students whilst riding their

bikes and we are delighted that all students passed. In addition, the Bikeability staff described them

all as a pleasure to teach and all students passed either level two or three, plus the Fix course in

bicycle maintenance. Well done Kayla Clayton, Ruby Lewis, Jessica Underhill, Harrison MacDonald-

Love, Freddie Melbourn, Jacob Dolphin, Fraser Hodges, Libby Lever, Lacey Keenan-James, Isabelle

Hodges, Sonny Carson, Jayden Watson, Joe Harvey, Finlay Howell, Isaac Payton, Evie Phillips, George

Aldridge, Todd Frost, Andrew Hill, Kieran McClurg, Jake Thornsby, Ellie Shore, Jonathan Birchill,

Aaron Heath, James Hodgkiss and William Preston.

After half term, the first week back, poppies and other items will be available for students to buy via a

donation for the annual remembrance poppy appeal. These will be available at break time and the

second half of lunchtime each day leading up to Remembrance day. Please have your child bring in

some money for this if you wish to donate to this appeal. Thank you. Mr Sutton.

If your child is on the SEND register, then an SEN support plan has been created for them. This

contains annual targets that will be reviewed at the end of each term by the class teacher. It will also

provide you with any intervention your child may be receiving. The 'Meet the new teacher' evening is

an ideal opportunity for you to see these plans and discuss targets. If you agree with them then the

support plan will be emailed to you.

If you would like to discuss your child's SEN needs with me then please contact school to make an

appointment.

Thank-you

Mrs Swift SENDCO

‘tis coming up to the season to be jolly

During our Christmas Fayre over the last few years we have put together a wine hamper.

Unfortunately, at the moment we have no wine for the empty basket so was wondering if

maybe you have a spare bottle you could send in to school to make it look a bit more like a

wine hamper-not just hamper!

Also nearer the date we will be asking for items for our Raffle and cake stalls so please keep

watching this space.

Many thanks

Please remind pupils that any designs for personalised Christmas products must be returned on

Monday 4th November on the design sheet. Please have a look at the lovely products that make great

Christmas presents.

Our students are participating in Word Mania;

the world's

leading word

building

competition!

For the next few weeks

we are asking all

students to get online and have fun with words. Through Wordmania,

students will improve their literacy skills by competing against schools from

across the globe in this fun and interactive competition. The Leader boards

will be published weekly on L’Hebdo and we can’t wait to see how each year

group does. Good luck to all – now go and get building those words!

So, what are we reading right now?

Currently, Year 5 are deep within WW2 discovering

what life was like for evacuees in the much-loved text

‘Friend or Foe’ by Michael Morpurgo. Will David ever

see his mum again? The children are unsure but can’t

wait to read on and find out.

Year 6 are adventuring through Daniel Pennac’s

magical tale of courage, friendship and loss. Students

are considering just how the main characters are

connected and how that came to be. Many theories

have been debated and we’re all desperate to be right!

Only time will tell.

Year 7 are spookily excited about Darren Shan’s ‘Cirque du Freak’ – the students

just can’t get enough of this gory and quite terrifying book! But will Mr Crepsley do

anything to Darren? And is he really a vampire?

And finally, Year 8 are about the step into Victorian Britain and meet Scrooge, the

miserly protagonist in the well-known novella written by Charles Dickens: ‘A

Christmas Carol’. We were impressed by how much students already knew about this

traditional Christmas tale and the students themselves have shown great enthusiasm

at the prospect of reading this text.

Reading is at the heart of our curriculum and we encourage all students to value the

tales in books; the stories in heritage texts and the knowledge in non-fiction. Across

all departments, teachers are bringing books to life and demonstrating not only the

necessity to read for academic success, but also for sheer enjoyment!

Reading regularly at home At PMS we want to celebrate every student’s adventure in reading. We want to hear

about what books they’re enjoying; what authors they’ve discovered and what

magazines they’ve tried and tested.

The expectation across the school is that students should be reading daily and

logging this in their planner.

e.g. I read Silverfin, pages 103 – 127.

Over the course of the week, we’d expect students to read to an adult at least

three times, whether that be to a parent, grandparent, teacher or adult helper

Page 9: Thank you to all of the Y5 parents that attended meet the class …penkridge.staffs.sch.uk/.../Lhebdo-25th-October-2019.pdf · 2019-10-28 · L’hebdo 23/10/19 ‘tis coming up to

in school. This time should allow discussion about the characters, themes and reader

predictions.

An adult should sign the planner to show they have heard the student read.

To celebrate our growing culture of reading, all class teachers will now be checking

planners for reading logs on a weekly basis and awarding positive points for those

who read regularly, and to an adult.

We are really looking forward to learning about what your children have been

reading and the books they’d recommend to us.

Penkridge played a tough match against Walton High School on Monday and unfortunately

managed to come out on top once again with a win of 15-14.

The first quarter started off successfully with Penkridge scoring the majority of the goals and

helping the team go ahead by several points. The Walton attacking side had fast, agile

players by Alex, Abi ad Lydia were able to get some clean interceptions, which stopped the

opposition from scoring many points.

In the second quarter, Penkridge stayed safe and kept the score well above Walton. Maple

and Imogen were able to dodge away from their opponents and score several goals and

Rhianna got a numerous amount of interceptions and led the ball down to the other end of

the court. With Jessi and Millie making careful and strong passes down to the attacking end,

the team had high expectations in winning the match.

The third and fourth quarters suddenly became very challenging: Walton managed to pull

the score back and they were now only two points behind. Penkridge could feel the tension

and started to panic by giving away simple passes that cost them hugely, Walton pulled the

score back to 14 all. With only a few minutes until the end, Penkridge were able to score

another goal so that they were only one point ahead. There were a few seconds left, when

the Walton goal attack went to take the shot. Everyone on court knew what the score was

and both teams were eager to win. Then the whistle blew and the goal was unsuccessful

which meant that Penkridge had secured yet another win.

Visit to Quarry Bank Mill 2020

October 2019 Dear Parent/Guardian We have arranged for the children in Year 6 on Thursday 30th January 2020 to visit Quarry Bank Mill as part of their studies in History. The National Trust team are experts at bringing to life our Y6 study of the Industrial Revolution. We are requesting a donation of £15 for each child which includes all transport costs, National Trust membership and the costs of the tour. Please pay by Parent Pay by Thursday 19th December 2019 or as soon as possible. As always, please also note that if we do not have enough donations to cover the cost of the trip, the visit will not be able to go ahead and we will incur charges from the bus company and visit provider for cancellation. The students will leave for Quarry Bank at 9.15am prompt and return slightly after the end of a normal school day at approximately 4pm, but this does depend on traffic. The students will need to bring a packed lunch for the day (which should not include glass bottles). All students will be expected to wear their school uniform and appropriate warm weather clothing for the time of year. As much of our day will be outside, students may wear appropriate alternative footwear such as walking boots instead of school shoes. Students should be aware that we are visiting a place open to the public and they will need to be attentive, sometimes silent and at all times respectful. Cooperation and good behaviour is paramount, not only for the reputation of the school, but also for the health and safety of the students. A medical form will follow in the new year once payments have been received. However, advance warning is needed of any participants with special medical or other needs to ensure all health and safety considerations have been made. Before and during the visit all students are expected to follow the school rules at all times and any failure to do so will result in them forfeiting their place on the trip. The deadline for completing paying £15 via ParentPay is Friday 19th December 2019. Thank you in advance for all donations that make it possible for this visit to run. Yours faithfully, Mr R Cole Head of Geography, History, RE & KS3
