FROM THE EDITOR...Good afternoon and welcome back to Sporting Club Thamesmead as we welcome Grays in our continued battle for survival.

If today’s game is half as good as the last time we were in action here then we’ll be in for a treat, even if it was ultimately heartbreaking to concede such a late equaliser having been three goals up against Billericay.

Keith and the lads continued their fine, resilient form of recent weeks with a battling draw and a clean sheet at Bury Town last week, and we go again both today and on Tuesday when we welcome Maidstone here as the side continues to dig deep in a bid to preserve the Ryman Premier League status.

Also a note to all that the Mead’s trip to Margate has been rearranged for Tuesday 28th January with a 7.45pm kick-off.

“We’ve now lost just once in the last eleven which is a massive achievement -

confidence is growing all the time”

Good afternoon and welcome back for today’s game against Grays Athletic, and welcome to the players, management and supporters of Grays - I hope you enjoy your short stay here and wish you a safe journey home. It’s been a busy couple of weeks since my last notes, both on and off the pitch.

Off the pitch I have been busy trying to strengthen the current squad as we still have a few injuries. I’m pleased with the new additions I have added and I’m sure they will bring a lot of experience to us.

Firstly, I would like to officially welcome Simon Glover to the club. Simon has not just come in to play he is here as an assistant to me as well.

Simon has a wealth of experience and has already settled in really well. I am sure we will get on really well as we both seem to have the same views.

I have also added Tommy Whitnell from Cray Wanderers. Tommy has also played at Welling United and scored goals there. I jumped at the chance to sign him when I knew he was unhappy at Cray.

Tommy made his debut last week

against Bury Town and I thought did well. He then got on the scoresheet in a friendly we had on Monday night against Greenwich Borough.

I’m positive he will score the goals we need for the remainder of the season.

Also making his debut in the Bury game last week was the experienced Derek Duncan who I signed from AFC Hornchurch.

Derek has played at this level for years and I saw on Saturday what he will bring to the team.

I’m really pleased with my next signing and he needs no introduction to people at the club, and that is goalkeeper Sam Mott who I signed from East Thurrock on Wednesday night.

Sam was at the club two seasons ago before going to Welling United last season, where he had a great time - winning the Conference South and getting an England C call up.

I won’t lie and say I was disappointed when he signed for East Thurrock, as we are mates too, but things haven’t worked out there and we have had a chat and put things behind us.

I’m big enough to wipe the slate clean

and move forward and so is Sam.

Sam will add great competition to Buddy and that’s what we need if we are going to stay up.

The last signing I have made is young Luke Edgar. Luke is only 19 years of age and asked for a trial last week.

He came along to training and caught my eye so I gave him 90 minutes on Monday night and I thought he was excellent. He is still a little raw but I think he will become one hell of a player.

The biggest plus for me off the pitch has been the return of Ashley Probets. If anyone doesn’t know, Ashley ruptured his cruciate a year ago.

Without doubt, he is the best left back at this level and above, and I know he was approached by a Conference club at the beginning of the season.

We have missed him on and off the pitch and to see him play for 75 minutes on Monday was a real boost for me.

The quality he gives us will be massive going into the second half of the season, and I am now happy with the squad I have got.

We still have Danny Phillips who has a

THE MANAGER

broken foot to come back in the next couple of weeks and Chris Saunders still has this niggling calf strain, but he should be back soon.

Meanwhile, Ross Lover had his operation last week on his knee and all went well there too, so hopefully by the end of this month I should have a very strong squad to pick from.

On the pitch it has been a little frustrating as I think our performances should have got us two wins instead of two draws, with our last home game seeing us draw 3-3 to Billericay.

On paper, it isn’t a bad result but we were 3-0 up and they scored the equalizer in added time of the added time, if that makes sense! We raced to a 3-0 lead with a twenty-minute spell that was simply brilliant.

Billericay scored just before half time and then we lost our skipper, Lewis Tozer, with a hamstring injury. We regrouped, though, and looked comfortable, but even though they pulled another goal back with ten minutes to go, I still thought we would see the game out.

Unfortunately, some naive play saw us lose the ball in a dangerous area and they scored with the last kick of the game. I was gutted as I thought we deserved all three points but, in the end, it was still a point which we do need.

Last Saturday saw us travel to Bury Town who are in the play-off positions at the moment, and we came away with a good 0-0 draw.

Again, though, I thought we did enough to win the game and pick up all three points, especially in the first half where we had at least four great chances.

We went up there with a below strength side. Lewis Tozer was still missing and so we had to reshuffle at the back.

Richard Butler started at centre back and centre forward Rob Carter played right back. This raised a few eyebrows but Carts played really well and their most dangerous player didn’t get a sniff.

Again, I was pleased with the

performance. I thought we worked really hard on a very tough pitch to play on and, again, it is another valuable point.

We have now only lost one game in the last eleven and, although we have drawn eight and won only two of those, it’s still a massive achievement. Confidence is growing now and I’m sure we are not far away from another win.

Today’s game is again going to be another hard one for us. We know Grays well as we both come up last year from the Division One North - they won our league and are a very strong side.

They have had a better first half of the season than us and are doing well, so we will need to be at our best today if we are going to get a result.

I think we are going in the right direction at the moment and I know if we play to our full potential then we will get a positive result this afternoon.

Enjoy the game,The Gaffer

FROM THE CHAIRMAN:

TERRYHILL

Good afternoon everyone and, firstly, let me welcome the players and officials of Grays Athletic to our new home here at Sporting Club Thamesmead.

It seems to be a tradition in this country that every day we talk about football and the weather, and they both go hand in hand too!

So let’s start with the weather, and how awful has it been? With rain nearly every day and games being postponed all over the country - two weeks ago our home game with Billericay was the only Ryman Premier game to be played on grass (with Maidstone’s 3G pitch also holding up, of course).

Indeed, we were one of only three senior games played throughout the whole of London on January 4th, with the other two games played at Arsenal’s Emirates Stadium and Barnet’s New Hive.

A big thank you to Keith and the ground staff for getting this game on. They worked non-stop from 9am till 2.30pm rolling and forking the pitch, and you’ll read Keith’s report on the game in his notes.

I would now like to welcome Simon Glover to the club as Keith’s number

two. Simon has played at a very good level of football and his knowledge and contacts can only help Keith in our quest to remain in this league.

Anyone of my age will also remember John Glover, Simon’s father, who was also an outstanding footballer in his own right - sadly, John is no longer with us today.

I know that Paul Bowden-Brown was a good friend of John’s, and I’m sure that his page opposite this one will have its own tribute to John. And finally from me today, whilst on the subject of tributes, look out in the

programme on Tuesday night for our tribute to Roy Vinter who tragically passed away a couple of weeks ago.

Roy was the secretary of the Kent League for many years before ill health meant he relinquished his role and became the league’s president.

Roy was instrumental in so many Kent League clubs moving on into the Southern League and, more recently of course, the Ryman League. Roy was one of a kind and will be sadly missed by the whole of Kent football.

Enjoy the game,Terry

“A big thank you to Keith & his ground staff for getting the game on - one of just three in the whole of London to be played that day”

THE CHAIRMAN

The SCT was one of just three London-based games played

FROM THE BOARDROOM:

PAULBOWDEN-BROWN“We are fully aware of what we have to do to create a secure financial future & will work on initiatives to bring people in”

THE BOARDROOM

May I welcome the directors, officials, players and supporters of Grays Athletic to the SCT and a safe journey home after an enjoyable game and refreshments.

We’re now three weeks into the New Year and, as a club, we’re enjoying some good football being played by our team, even if we have not earned the points I think we’ve deserved.

I travelled to Bury last Saturday with a very sedate drive - with no travel problems, I was able to consider calmly matters of life and enjoy a couple of cigars! I understand that the boys, accompanied by a few supporters, had a good journey in the coach supplied.

I watched the boys earn a very hard point in a game played on a very heavy pitch - at the start, the ball looked like a hot potato but it settled down during the game. I believe that we could have nicked all three points as our goalkeeper only had one actual save throughout the game.

I’d also like to welcome the new signings Keith has listed in his column - one of which is a new forward in Tommy Whitnell. Tommy has played for me at other clubs so I am fully aware of his pedigree, and I feel he will be a true asset to help us move up in the league table. He is the type of player that will settle into the squad quickly.

We are now at the time of the year where we are making plans to ensure that the stadium is fully compliant with the required FA Grade C by the 31st March, as we all know within football that failure will only result in relegation so we are hard at work

deciding the best way forward on the two outstanding items.

We previously assumed that this work would be carried out by our landlords, but recently, due to the Trust being amalgamated with the Peabody Trust, it has now become our liability.

You will all have seen the pictures on the news showing the floods around the south east, and due to the bad weather a fortnight ago, there were only two games played in the Ryman League Premier League - ourselves and Maidstone on 3G.

As a club, we therefore took the initiative of offering any season ticket holder of our local league clubs that also had their games cancelled a 50% reduction on entry to watch our game, and I believe this initiative was successful as our gate doubled for the game.

More importantly, our visitors were impressed with the facilities on offer and the quality of football played, and I look forward to welcoming these supporters back at the SCT.

As I have stated on numerous times with my financial hat on, we as a club must do all we can to get the local community involved if we are to become financially viable and not relying on the directors funding any shortfall.

We have to increase our attendances, as well as getting local businesses to support the club through sponsorship initiatives. I note we have numerous local youngsters playing in our youth teams but, for whatever reason, we are not seeing their parents at our games, so we will have to work with the

management of the SCT on initiatives.

Firstly, we want to get the residents through the doors to understand what facilities are available and, once we have their attention, ensure they are aware of all the sporting initiatives available within this facility by the Football Club - the running of numerous youth team, the U21s and, of course, our academy.

We must also ensure they are fully aware of all the work the Football Club does coaching within the local schools - we are fully aware of what we have to do if we are to have a secure financial future for the club.

It was great to see that Simon Glover recently joined the club as assistant manager/player, and I had the pleasure of knowing his father John both as a friend as well as a business colleague up until his death.

During that time I naturally followed Simon’s football career which included him playing with my son Richard at a club I was involved in. Simon always had a large pair of boots to fill as his father John was a local football hero both at Welling and Maidstone United.

In my opinion, although he plays in a different position, Simon has proved beyond doubt during his playing career that he is a true professional and his father would be so proud of his achievements.

His appointment here at the Mead will be an asset to our future, so welcome on board Simon.

GRAYS“It was a resilient performance to hold

out for so long & will give Kirby optimism heading into the next run of fixtures”

The Mead will be eyeing up today’s game as another chance to pick up three points as Keith McMahon’s side take on Grays Athletic.

Grays did look set for a secure midtable position in the Ryman Premier League this year following their title-winning campaign last time out, but four straight defeats in the league have seen Ryan Kirby’s side sliding ever closer towards a relegation struggle.

One glimmer of hope for the Gravelmen currently is that they do have a number of games in hand and, although more points on the board would be preferable, they will be confident of returning to midtable.

The side were sat in a rosy-looking ninth position prior to the recent run,

but the last two defeats have both been by just the solitary goal to two promotion-chasers in Maidstone and Dulwich.

The Maidstone game in particular was tough to stomach, conceding an injury-time winner having already been reduced to a battling performance with nine men - notably with the goalkeeper being dismissed with an hour still to play, and a second dismissal with twenty minutes to go.

It was a resilient performance to hold out for so long against the league leaders, and it will have ensured that Kirby remains optimistic for the run of games ahead.

But with games running out, the Mead will hope to make it five defeats running.

Grays Athletic celebrated their Centenary in 1990, and played at The Recreation Ground, Bridge Road from 1906 to 2010, and became members of the Athenian League in 1912.

Grays became very strong after the Second World War, winning the Essex Senior Cup in 1945 and winning the Corinthian League and Cup in 1946.

In 1983 a fire destroyed the 400-seater stand which included the dressing and kit rooms. Ron Billings came to the rescue by building the Ball Court Complex which included Dressing Rooms, Club Room and bar.

The 1987/88 season saw the club promoted to the then Vauxhall Opel Premier League after amassing 100 points, and a great FA Cup run in 1988/89 ended in the First Round proper, losing 2-0 away at Bath City. Grays won the League Cup, defeating Enfield in 1991/92

The FA Cup campaign in 2000/01 ended with defeat in the First Round proper for the third time, losing 4-0 away at Reading.

Season 2002/03 started poorly and saw Craig Edwards depart, being replaced by Mark Stimson as player-manager who appointed Scott Barrett as his assistant.

Ahead of the 2003/04 season, the club made the bold decision to turn most of the players into full time professionals, with the majority of players in their early twenties.

Despite being knocked out of the FA Cup in the second qualifying round, 2004/05 became the most successful in the club’s history. Stimson and his players won a number of manager and player of the month awards, with three players being called into the England National XI squad; Stuart Thurgood, Mitchell Cole and Dennis Oli. The ultimate success being crowned League Champions of the Nationwide Conference South and winning the FA Trophy.

Mark Stimson’s philosophy of entertaining the crowds proved to be very successful, with a blend of youthful exuberance

and the outstanding quality of the more experienced players.

Having equalled the Conference record of Kettering Town and going unbeaten in the first 15 fixtures of the season, both manager and players alike won several monthly awards.

The club’s first season in the top flight of non-league football ended in disappointment as they finished 3rd in the league, and went on to lose 5-4 on aggregate to Halifax Town in the play-offs. The team put the loss behind them as they won a second successive FA Trophy at Upton Park.

Following Mark Stimson’s resignation, the club appointed former European Cup winner Frank Gray to manage the side in the summer of 2006, but he only lasted 18 matches. Justin Edinburgh eventually became the club’s’ 4th manager of the season, and under his leadership the club reached the FA Trophy semi-finals where they lost to eventual winners Stevenage Borough. Survival in the league went to the last day of the season and despite losing, the club stayed up.

2009/10 turned out to be the fifth and final in the Conference Premier as both John Moncur (Chairman) and Andy Swallow (Chief Executive Officer) joined the club. Julian Dicks was brought in to replace Gary Phillips in September 2009, and Kenny Brown was soon appointed his assistant.

The team struggled throughout the season, winning just five league matches, and losing in their opening rounds of both the FA Cup and FA Trophy. The Blues did however manage to end the season on a high, winning two of their final three fixtures – the first of those away at AFC Wimbledon. In doing so, they recorded their first away league win for 16 months. The final day of the season was a sad affair for the club, as they said farewell The Recreation Ground after 114 years.

Following relegation from the Premier the cub resigned from the Conference, deciding they would be unable to field a competitive team in the Conference South

due to budget constraints. Following talks with both the FA and the Ryman League, the club were placed in the Ryman League Division One North.

The 2011/12 season was our first at this level for ten years, and despite having a solid start to the league campaign, a lack of consistency was evident throughout the remainder of the season which meant the team came up short in several matches, finally finishing in tenth position. Following the disappointing campaign Julian Dicks and Kenny Brown left the club by mutual consent, and the one-time Football League player, and ex-Thurrock manager Hakan Hayrettin was appointed as manager with his assistant Hassan Oktay.

With Hakan appointed, the remit was to challenge for a play-off place, and despite a few below par performances, the Club secured their play-off place on the penultimate weekend, meeting Enfield Town in the semi final. Trailing 2-0 with ten minutes left, the team managed to force extra time with two late goals. Unfortunately, with the match still level after extra time it was decided on penalties, with Grays losing 3-1.

The 2012-13 season was a successful one for the Club. With just 4 league defeats, and a run of form in the second half of the season which brought with it 18 successive league wins, the Club won the league title with three matches to spare, finishing with a Club record 102 points.

The summer of 2013 saw two big changes for the Club in a few short weeks, firstly ground sharing with Aveley and then, a short time after, it was announced that Hakan Hayrettin would be leaving his role as manager to join Luton Town. Experienced central defender Ryan Kirby took on the role.

The Club are still determined to find a new permanent home within the next couple of years. We are working closely with Thurrock Council on their long term sports and leisure strategy as we strive to provide a new community based facility that would be available to all residents in the area.

The result against Bury last weekend was due to a great effort from all of the players, on a pitch which looked like it was a bowl of custard!

The lads all battled hard and picked up a terrific point against a side who harbour aspirations of a play-off place.

Strangely, we were even a bit gutted that we weren’t coming back with all three points.

We enjoyed some new faces in the squad for last weekend’s game and,

collectively, we rolled our sleeves up and battled for one another - it was a great effort by one and all.

On the injury front, Chris Saunders is currently struggling with a calf strain and Lewis Tozer tweaked a hamstring in the game with Billericay.

Ross Lover has undergone his operation and the doctor has told us that he’s pleased with the outcome so far. This season will likely come too early for Ross though, so next season is our goal at the moment.

Otherwise, Danny Phillips remains out, continuing to suffer with the broken toe picked up recently.

I’d like to welcome Simon Glover to the team - in the short time I’ve seen him so far I can tell he’ll be a real asset.

There is a buzz around the club and the players can’t wait for the next game - we had a friendly against Greenwich on Monday for some of the players to pick up minutes, and it was great to see Ashley Probets pinging balls in from the left again.

It’s an important few months but you can see how far we’ve come as a team this season - it’s been an extremely difficult learning curve but also a great challenge that we’ve all enjoyed.

BARRY LANDY’S DOWN IN THE BOX

www.downinthebox.co.uk | @BarryLandyDITB

Every New Year, English football tends to begin in introspective fashion. Amidst the backdrop of FA Cup third round weekend, when the big boys join the party, the now perennial debate rages on; has the FA Cup lost its once great lustre, for good?

If it is a party, recent years suggest its being increasingly overlooked by trendy types for the constantly face-lifted League Cup; a midweek, early season get-together that now thrives in a football schedule where priories are consumed with convenience and consumerism.

A once ridiculed tournament, it and the Europa League, have now emerged from the underground football scene, satisfying the many who crave football in the middle of a working week, filling the long gap between league matchdays.

The FA Cup interrupts the league season, and for many it’s hardly worth their while.

Much is spoken of the romance of the cup and true, it facilitates the potential for clashes that otherwise would never come to pass, showing scant regard for the football pyramid. There’s much to love.

But realistically, the clubs who become romantically entangled with the FA Cup, court only a brief flirtation with the oldest cup competition in the world. It’s the shortest of love stories.

The lure of a Wembley date appears an attractive proposition for all, if virtually unattainable for those outside the elite bracket. All they have to do is dream, but

dream is all most can do.

So, with this considered, he focus on Aston Villa’s Paul Lambert and Sam Allardyce this week has been of interest. Lambert’s comments that Premier League clubs could “do without” the cup competition caused consternation in some circles while West Ham eight teenagers featured in West Ham’s drubbing at the hands of Nottingham Forest.

The former cited a small squad, punctured somewhat by injuries, as a reason why he couldn’t treat the visit of Sheffield United with the urgency of a side with genuine cup aspirations. Allardyce has a huge injury list to contend with, a relegation fight to win and a League Cup semi-final to manoeuvre.

The reasons behind Allardyce’s selection fuelled by logic and total legitimacy, while Villa’s faltering may be owed in greater part to their general struggles this season. They’re quite bad.

An interesting contrast of sorts from last weekend, was the pragmatism showed by both West Ham and Conference side Macclesfield in their respective sides.

Neither side had any real intention of triumph, with Town making defensive changes into to preserve a draw, a reply and lastly, the potential for a fourth round tie.

West Ham had little interest in this game, let alone further fixtures to fulfil.

A damning indictment for the Cup it would seem, but an inanimate object can’t devalue itself.

That is the result of those who deem it so irrelevant. Football managers have several stakeholders to appease but what of the decision to air more FA Cup matches on satellite than terrestrial television, late time slots of highlights programmes and the latest draw being made before four (seven if you include postponed games) have even taken place?

Decision makers, be it commercial or fiscal, are draining the life out of England’s premier cup competition.

The failure of clubs to include cup matches in season ticket packages too, means often the matches are too much of a stretch, whatever the round.

For all the talk of romance, most clubs can only flirt with FA Cup success

MATCH REPORT:

ACTION REPLAY

With the Mead battling hard to get out of the Ryman Premier Division’s bottom four, an away trip to face a play-off chasing team who had lost just once in their last ten games would have, at the start of the season, seemed very daunting.

But a magnificent rear guard action with Junior Baker again outstanding saw the Mead return home with another point that takes our own impressive run to just a solitary defeat in the last eleven games.

In truth, the game that marked the debuts for the club of Tommy Whitnell and Derek Duncan and a first start for new player assistant boss Simon Glover, was a game that was always crying out for a goal.

The fixture was played out in very slippery conditions and, ultimately, both sides were forced to settle for a solitary point.

The Mead started well with Sean Roberts firing straight at home keeper Marcus Garnham and Rashid Kamara shooting high over when well placed.

With defences on top, there were few

clear chances at either end with the home side’s best effort coming from a long range shot by Jordan Patrick that was saved by Rob Budd, whilst at the other end Garnham saved well from a Derek Duncan header.

Shamir Mullings then had a couple of half chances to put the Mead ahead, and as Bury had more of the play towards the end of the half, Anthony Roulston just failed to convert Jordan Patricks low cross.

The Mead then came closest to breaking the deadlock on the stroke of half time as Shamir’s drive beat keeper Garnham all ends up, only for the ball to smack off the Bury crossbar whilst the home keeper did well to scramble the rebound away from Rashid Kamara as he followed up.

The start of the second period saw Bury have their best chance of the contest as Danny Cunningham struck the post from close range after the Mead failed to clear the ball from a scramble.

As the half wore on there were fewer chances than in the opening half - the best chance that did come along fell to the host - but in truth neither side looked likely to find the net and were forced to settle for a point.

It is a point that probably helps the Mead more than their hosts, although come the end of April who knows how valuable it will ultimately prove to be given the tightness of both ends of the Ryman Premier table.

THESE football managers, they really don’t have it easy sometimes. Dealing with players playing up, demanding chairmen always expecting more and often irate supporters having a moan. And that’s before the referee turn up to ruin his day!

Their career path is certainly an acquired taste, especially as ‘sacking season’ now seems to be a weekly event. A job forever on the edge, with your prospects in the hands of so many others.

But the good ones are becoming somewhat of an endangered species. And the deadly predator? The growing trend of Football League clubs taking the quick and, ultimately cheaper, option.

Now it seems “knowing the club” beats knowing your stuff and knowing how to control a dressing room – and it’s causing a serious bottleneck that is making life impossible for the experienced managers to get back in.

We’ve known for some time that Football League club seem to have a mental block when it comes to taking a chance on a Non-League manager. It’s whispered around that the only way you’ll get there is to take a team to the League yourself. Promotion without

promotion? Forget it.

Clubs are now more keen on appointing the inexperienced caretakers, the captain who has helped out, or the player coming to the end of his career having rushed through a coaching course rather than someone who has earned an apprenticeship lower down the ladder.

And the problem with that? Once they get sacked, they need to find themselves another job. With a Football League club shining bright on their CV, what chance does the likes of Liam Daish or Gary Brabin have of getting back in when you can drop in a big name?

Terry Brown was forced to look down to the Ryman Premier and lowly Margate to find a way back into management. It’s becoming a growing trend.

So how did they all feel when Andy Thorn was given the Kidderminster Harriers job last week? Thorn was appointed Coventry City manager two

years back with the club in turmoil after operating as their chief scout. They were relegated and he was sacked.

Kiddy see a famous football name on his wikipedia page and despite no knowledge of the Skrill Premier, he is selected over those with years of toe-to-toe battling under their belt.

That’s not a dig at Thorn you understand, but more the system that seems to exist in the sport.

As Joe Lolley’s £250,000 move to Huddersfield Town represents, Football League clubs love to take a punt on the up-coming playing talent that the Non-League game has to offer.

So what exactly is wrong with our managers?

RYMAN LEAGUE ROUND-UP

LEAGUE ROUND-UP:

RYMAN REvIEW

With second-placed Dulwich Hamlet not playing until Sunday, Wealdstone had the opportunity to increase their lead at the top of the Ryman League Premier Division table but they were beaten 3-2 at Canvey Island.

The Stones’ second successive defeat came as Jason Hallett gave the Gulls a 21st minute lead. However, Gordon Bartlett’s side responded to go 2-1 up with goals from Tom Pett on 36 minutes and then Jonathan Wright on 66 minutes. But teenage sub Tom Strickland equalised in the 85th minute – just four minutes after coming off the bench – and Nick Humphrey won it for the home side in stoppage time.

The top five is completed by Maidstone United, AFC Hornchurch and Kingstonian, who climbed above Dulwich into second after beating them 2-1 on Sunday at Kingsmeadow.

An own goal from Sam Page on 19 minutes has seen K’s go behind before Andre McCollin levelled from the spot after 35 minutes and Daniel Sweeney won it for the hosts with four minutes to go.

Maidstone were the only other winners, coming home with 1-0 victory from Grays Athletic courtesy of an injury-time winner from Fabio Saraiva. However, by this time Grays had only nine men on the field after losing goalkeeper Luke Chambers to a straight red card after 28 minutes and then Craig Pope to two yellows after 68 minutes.

Hornchurch suffered a 2-1 reverse at Imber Court against Metropolitan Police, where

again it was a last-gasp goal that won it.

Ricardo Joseph put the Met in front after 10 minutes and George Purcell eventually pulled the Urchins back on level terms in the 67th minute. And with virtually the last kick of the game, on-loan Matt Pattison grabbed the Met`s winner.

Bognor Regis Town and Lowestoft Town are two and four points off the play-off spot respectivelyl, although the Trawlerboys were held to a draw at Harrow Borough.

The Sussex Rocks beat the Essex Rocks of East Thurrock United 3-1 at Nyewood Lane – and they did so with ten-men. Terry Dodd gave the home side an 11th minute lead that Tom Stephen cancelled out from the spot just two minutes later. But on 24 minutes Kane Wills restored Bognor`s lead and then Dodd added a third nine minutes later. And the hosts held firm, despite losing Craig Robson to two bookable offences in the 71st minute.

Lowestoft salvaged a late point at Earlsmead after Harrow had taken a 35th minute lead through Simon Akinola. The Trawlerboys eventually pulled back on level terms a minute from time through Chris Henderson.

The bottom four consists of Cray Wanderers, Carshalton Athletic, Enfield Town and Thamesmead Town, with the latter two both picking up points on Saturday.

Enfield won their ̀ six-pointer ̀with Cray 1-0 at the Queen Elizabeth II Stadium, courtesy of a goal immediately after half-time by veteran Bertie Brayley, while Mead gained

a useful point from a goalless draw at Ram Meadow against troubled Bury Town.

Carshalton, meanwhile, were on the wrong end of a 4-0 drubbing at the Beveree by Hampton & Richmond Borough.

Dave Tarpey marked his Hampton return with two goals in the 11th and 62nd minutes after top scorer Charlie Moone had given the hosts a 10th minute lead. A Ben Harris goal in the final minute added the gloss for the Beavers.

Hendon were the day`s other winners, beating Terry Brown`s new-look Margate side by the odd goal in five at Hartsdown Park.

With Gate fielding three more debutants it may take time for them to gel, although they took an eighth minute lead through Matt Bodkin.

Jefferson Louis equalised 10 minutes later, only for Jamie Stuart to restore Gate`s lead right on half-time. Ten minutes after the break Casey MacLaren equalised and then Anthony Thomas scored what proved to be the winner for the Greens six minutes later.

The other game between Leiston and Lewes ended all-square at 2-2. Sam Crabb gave the Rooks a great start with the opening goal inside two minutes, only for David Head to level 22 minutes later.

Craig Parker then put a much-improved Suffolk side ahead on 63 minutes, but the visitors earned a point through Luke Blewden nine minutes from time.

COMMERCIALCORNER

Good afternoon all and welcome to the players, officials and supporters of Grays Athletic to Sporting Club Thamesmead for the first time - we trust that you’ll enjoy your brief spell with us and we bid you a safe trip home later on. A big thank you to all of you who took part in the club’s New Year’s Draw which was drawn after our last home game here two weeks ago against Billericay Town. I must say that, on a day when only Arsenal and Barnet played in London, huge praise has to go to all those involved in getting on what was an incredible game of football, and one which left all who watched it grateful for the hard work involved. Here at the draw results from New Year’s Day:1st prize - Chocolate hamper - Ben Bowden-Brown2nd prize - TTFC director for the day - Mr Meades3rd prize - Bottle of Scotch - Peter Tiernay4th prize - Bottle of vintage Port - K Budd5th prize - Decorative cake - Christine Bowden-Brown

Many congratulations to all of our winners, and thanks to everyone who entered for your support.

Another big thank you to the Cooper family for their ongoing sponsorship of the home Man of the Match award - the winner from our last home game against Billericay Town was Junior Baker, who received his prize from Simone Gray on the day that we remembered the anniversary of poor Mark’s passing. Who will get it today? Why not stay and see the presentation in the Mead Lounge later on at around 5.15pm?

We’re still looking for local companies who would like to become part of our family here at the SCT - we can offer you and your friends and/or colleagues a great afternoon out. Interested? Simply get in touch with me on a matchday or by the contact details listed elsewhere on the page. And finally, our next home game is on Tuesday night when we entertain Maidstone United here at the SCT. The crowd is obviously going to be one of the largest that we’re going to get here at the SCT this season, so I request that you could all be a little patient with us on the night. And finally-finally(!), I’d like to send my condolences to the family of Roy Vinter who passed away last week - Roy was an absolute gentleman and it was a privilege to call him a friend - and we’re planning a bigger tribute to him on Tuesday night.

34 The Mead v Grays Athletic

NEXT AT THE SCT:

MAIDSTONEThe Mead face arguably their toughest test of the season so far in three days’ time as Keith McMahon’s side return to action here for the visit of Maidstone.

The Stones haven’t dropped out of the play-off positions since the end of August and, with the largest crowds in the division by some margin, this has been reflected by their on-field performances, as the side has soared to the top of the table.

When the two sides met back at the end of September, the Mead slipped to a 4-0 defeat but will be buoyed by the new-found resilience in recent weeks to have picked up a string of more positive results.

Maidstone, meanwhile, have lost just twice in their previous nineteen league outings and are set for a tight race for the title alongside Wealdstone, Kingstonian, Dulwich Hamlet, Bognor Regis and AFC

Hornchurch, it seems.

The Stones have been backed by the form of striker, Frannie Collin, this season, with the former Tonbridge hitman having bagged fourteen league goals so far this campaign.

And Stones boss, Jay Saunders, insists that they’ve got the best striker in the division spearheading their side, despite coming in for recent criticism.

“He’s the best striker in the league as far as I’m concerned,” he told Kent Online.

“We brought him in to score goals and that’s what he does - nobody can be brilliant every week but, even when he’s not at his best, he works his socks off for the rest of the side.

“Everyone is entitled to their opinion but some of the stuff they’ve been saying is crazy.”

ON THE ROAD:WINGATE & FINCHLEY

Saturday 25th January 2014 Kick-off: 3.00pm N12 0PD 27 miles 55 minutes

The simplest way to get to The Harry Abrahams Stadium is to get on to the A406 North Circular Road.

Coming from the East (eg via A10, M11) take the A1000 turn off. At the end of the slip road turn left at the lights. Go straight over the next set of lights, then after 100m pass through another set of lights. Then at the next set of lights turn right into Summers Lane.

The Abrahams Stadium is a few hundred metres down on the right hand side.
