CORINTHIAN-CASUALSWhite

First of all may I extend a very warm wel-come to Mill Field to the Directors, staff, players and supporters of our visitorsCorinthian-Casuals for today’s FA Trophy3rd Qualifying Round match.

Tuesday night saw us travel to Wingate &Finchley where we exited the League Cupin somewhat bizarre fashion, coming backfrom 1-3 down to lead 4-3, and finally lose4-5. The highlights were the performanc-es from Callum Maltese who scored twice,Max Nicholson, and a goal from Glen Little(which at least means we won’t have tokeep hearing the story of his goal againstHarlow Town last season quite so often).

It is the second time in recent weeks thatwe have battled around the North Circular, dominated Wingate, and have come awaywith nothing – but that’s football I guess. As for today’s match, the F.A. Trophy willalways have a special place in the hearts ofour supporters after our wins at Villa Parkin 2005 and Upton Park in 2006. The prizetoday is a place in the First Round Proper, which will put the winners of today’s gamejust five more wins from Wembley – with agood draw there is still a long way to go in

this year’s Trophy. The expectation eachyear is that the eventual winners will comefrom the “Conference National”, but thatwasn’t the case when we won it in 2005whilst playing in the Conference South. Ialso recall that in 2006 we playedConference National teams in every round, whilst Woking reached the final that yearwithout having played any! In the competi-tion so far Corinthian-Casuals have beatenThree Bridges, Redbridge and Leiston, whilst we have accounted for BiggleswadeTown and Waltham Abbey.

Our next matches are on Tuesday atHarrow Borough, unless there is a replay inwhich case we will be off to Tolworth onWednesday evening. Our next match hereis on Saturday when we entertain VCDAthletic. Corinthian-Casuals are also dueto be playing on Tuesday at Hastings, thenface trips to Three Bridges on Saturday, followed by a Robert Dyas League Cupmatch against Tooting & Mitcham, theirnext home match is on December 12thagainst Walton Casuals. Get behind yourteams, enjoy the match and have a safejourney home. Keith Burns

Blue Notes

With

Mark Bentley

Today we welcome Ryman Southside Corinthian-Casuals to Mill Fieldfor this FA Trophy encounter. Becausewe are playing lower league opposi-tion certainly doesn't make it a fore-gone conclusion that we will win thegame. We need to approach this gameno differently to all the other sides wehave faced from lower down this sea-son and that is as professionally as wecan and have the mindset that wemust be prepared to work hard. Likethe previous round against WalthamAbbey sides will raise their gameagainst the higher ranked team so weneed to be ready.

The last few performances have cer-tainly seen a different character with-in the team and have answered a fewquestions I had about them andwhether they can roll their sleeves upand deal with conditions that perhapsare not suited to their style of play.Enfield last Saturday was a primeexample of this with a proper "work-man" like performance. We were putunder a lot of pressure second halfbut on reflection I can't rememberLamar being ever troubled which is acredit to the 10 players in front ofhim. Looking at the next month aheadwith no fewer than six away games -which on paper all look very difficult -we are going to need performanceslike last Saturday if we are to comethrough.

Like I keep saying every one of thesquad will play their part over thesecoming weeks and fingers crossed wecan string a good few results together

and stay in the challenging pack.Firstly though we have a very toughtrophy game to take care of today andhopefully we can set ourselves upwith a nice draw in the next round.

Enjoy the gameBenno

SIVA PLEASED WITH BIG CLUBSSCOUTING NON-LEAGUE TALENT

SATURDAY 21st NOVEMBER 2015Courtesy of Michael McCann,

http://www.morningstaronline.co.ukGrays Athletic full-back Jey Siva told the

Star on Thursday that he was pleased thatmore and more Football League clubs werescouting non-league clubs for talent. The success of Charlie Austin, Dwight Gayleand Jamie Vardy — who is on the brink ofequalling Ruud van Nistelrooy’s record ofscoring in 10 consecutive Premier Leaguegames [Assistant Editor - as reported in theWanderer's article and the NLP feature,Vardy has now equalled van Nistelrooy'sgoalscoring feat] has seen an increase ofclubs signing players from the lower divi-sions in attempt to find a rare gem.

And though Grays have suffered from thebigger clubs cherry-picking their best play-ers, Siva thinks it is encouraging that theseplayers are getting the chance to showcasetheir talent on the biggest stage.

Speaking to the Star at the third AsianFootball Awards, he said: “It’s definitelygood to see so many players being picked upfrom Non-League. All the time our managersays: ‘You don’t know who is watching thesegames.’ “Especially when you do well as ateam, that will attract more scouts too, likewith ourselves, particularly given our strongstart to this season.

“Our centre-back has been scouted by

Leyton Orient when they had come to watchour striker, so there is a story in itself — thatpeople are always looking for new talent.“You have to relish scouts being therebecause it gives a great chance to showwhat you are capable of doing.” Siva wasdelighted to be involved in the awardsevening and though he didn’t win any prizes,he feels that evenings like this are crucial inpromoting the role Asian people have infootball, both on and off the field of play.

“I was delighted to be nominated for theaward on a great evening to showcase Asiancoaches, footballers and those behind thescenes working in the football community.“I am really pleased to be involved and itwas a really worthwhile event to showcasesome very worthwhile people.”

Hello everybody and welcome to this FATrophy game against Corinthian-Casuals. As I'm sitting here typing this article, it is

cold outside, a fire is burning away insideand we are looking forward to a large fam-ily gathering and a huge turkey dinner. No Ihaven't fast forwarded a month toChristmas, I'm in New England awaitingThanksgiving Day. The best way to describe it would be Christmas Day without the pres-ents I suppose. Anyway it's huge over hereand a massive part of American life thateven ex-pats and visitors from “OldEngland” get involved in!

I'm visiting my friend Danny who moved tothe US back in 2007. He and his family aremembers of the GAFC Trust [Quite right! –Ed] keeping a little piece of home with himfrom the days he used to watch The Blues.Of course a few Blues fans who have emi-grated is nothing compare to today's opponents. They have a large following inBrazil and if you are wondering where theSão Paulo team Corinthians got its namefrom then I'm sure there will be a bit aboutit in the visitors history page in this pro-gramme. `

Anyway back to America, I have been afew times down the years now and despitethe similarities in language, music etc thereare some things that just make it so differ-ent! The first night I arrived we headeddown to Big Y, which is basically like Tesco,to buy a crate of beer for the fridge. Now Iknow that you have to be 21 in most USstates to drink but look at me, Ihave a beer belly, grey hair and an oldwrinkly face that only a mother could love![Nonsense Michael. We all love you – atleast while you’re in The States! – Ed]. Weget to the check out and the girl on the tillsays “I'm going to need ID for both of you”.As I say, I have been before and know thatyou get asked for ID even if you are oldenough, even our shops at home have a“challenge 25” policy just to make sure youare over 18 but seriously, most of you know

what I look like!! Another differencebetween the countries is the humour, mycomment of “I have tattoos, therefore Imust be over 18” was met with “sorry sir,it is 21 in America and anyway tattoos arenot accepted as ID”, oh well I tried! LuckilyDanny had his Connecticut driving licenceon him as I had yet to unpack, beer is pri-ority after all, and I had to wait outside likea little kid while the transaction took place.

While we are over here Danny's twinshave just celebrated their first birthday andI'm sure out of all the gifts their favouritesmust have been the personalised GAFCbibs, if only we could get ones that say “Idribble better than Carlos”! I'm not sure ifAmerica has social services but I'm sure Isaw some West Ham bibs and romper suitsin the house as well and surely that's not fair and the relevant authorities should benotified, although the England ones shouldbe allowed to stay and balance it up I sup-pose!

As I said at the start of this piece it isvery cold here. It's one of those places thathas proper seasons. I have been here insummer with temperatures above 30C andthe last time we visited at Thanksgiving itwas 10C and only gets colder afterChristmas! Luckily this time it has only dropped to 6C so far with the high justabove freezing during the day, that meantwe have managed to fit in a round of golf. The cold weather and the fact we played atthe home of the Connecticut Amateur Openmeant that a high score was on the cardsand so it proved with Danny winning with around of 92 to my 109, to be fair he hasmoved on from the days of Belhus Park andCranham golf courses! Right due to print-ing deadlines that is all for now and I'm looking forward to some turkey, beerand American football, to go with wall towall English football on the TV, I could getused to this! Enjoy the game and see you soon!

Ramblings

By

David Raven

I recently deplored the media piranha'sincessant tearing at everything Salford Cityand begging for a chance for the world torecognise there is more to non-leaguefootball than a club owned by a few has-beens and a foreign billionaire investor.Step up non-league which in recent dayshas provided enough ammunition to fire asalvo of non-league goodness that morethan meets your non-league five-a-day. Tosave having an article that looks like thestart of The Matrix or a plate of alphabettispaghetti my chef 's selection is a starter ofSteven Mackay of Brora Rangers launchinga penalty at the international space stationin a Highland League game. My maincourse recommendation is the crackinggoal scored by Josh Chamberlain ofBerkhamstead in the FA Vase with a sidedish of Thurrock's Kamarl Duncan scoring awind-assisted own-goal. These twodelights have been picked up by the popu-lar press for some much needed attentionon the non-league game at large. Fordessert I highly recommend the goalscored by BFT against Enfield Town lastweek and a slice of Barking departing theFA Vase having a goal disallowed becausethe officials failed to do their job properlyand the ball went through the net justinside the post. More drama than a tunnelfull of the special one. We just need theBeeb to take note now!

On the subject of officials they reallyhave been naughty lately. Take Barking'splight at Hertford. Turns out there was ahole in the net and nobody recalls theassistant referees checking the nets beforethe game or after half-time. If true, this isalmost as shocking as watching an assis-tant referee have the flag in the hand thatis not next to the pitch or seeing the refer-ee look into the sky to monitor the entiretrajectory of the ball. It shouldn't happenand you wouldn't get this happening on aSunday. Allegedly. Going back to ourrecent county cup game at Mill Field you

have a visiting player run after and punchan opponent in the head...the assistant, along with everyone in the ground, saw itbut the man in the middle disagreed andcalled it handbags which is bottle-speak fornot wanting to make a big decision. Itdoesn't end there and down in the darkestcorners of Sunday football I have seen ref-erees award offside directly from a goal-kick, award a goal against a team thatplayed their own goal-kick to an opponentwho was inside the penalty area and fail tosend off a right-back who made a greatsave from a free kick, diving full length tohis right and pushing the ball around thepost. It was a good save, mind. The keep-er? Stranded on the other post. Referee? He said the player headed it clear. Theplayer? Probably still laughing. It's not allone way traffic though...you would be sur-prised at how many players and club offi-cials don't understand that the white linearound the penalty area is part of thepenalty area and a foul committed on itmakes it a penalty. It certainly got allMcEnroe on one of those recently. Also, thereferee doesn't need to agree with anassistant referee and he really is allowedto use his noggin and make his own deci-sions.

On the subject of noggins I have in recenttimes listened to some splendid garbagebeing delivered by those former profes-sional football players that like to stay inthe public conscience by offering theirutterly pointless opinions with constantlycontradictory phrases that start with "like Isaid" in between football commentatorsdescribing local weather conditions ormaking it sound like they really know aboutfootball. My main bone of contention withthe tweedles is that they talk about playersthat don't play for the teams currentlyengaged in confrontation and sometimesplayers that play for teams in countriesother than the one for which the game weare listening to us being played. 1975: Graham Hill

killed in air crash

One of Britain's greatest motor racingdrivers has been killed in a plane crash insouth-east England. Graham Hill, 46, whoretired from the sport in July 1975, waskilled instantly along with the four otheroccupants in his Piper Aztec - all mem-bers of the Embassy Hill team.

Hill was piloting the plane when heclipped a row of trees on Arkley golfcourse in Hertfordshire, just before 2200GMT. The two-times world champion wasflying Embassy Hill manager Ray Brimble, fellow driver Tony Brise, and two mechan-ics from France to attend a party inLondon. Arley Golf Club steward TedDickins said visibility had been very poorat the time of the accident."It was terri-ble - the ambulances couldn't even seethe bunkers as they were driving down,"he said.

Friend and Elstree Aero Club chairmanSpencer Flack said the champion driverwas taking a risk by trying to land in badconditions but told reporters he was anexperienced flier. "He was a skilful pilotwho tried to get in and failed. In thoseconditions it's just a matter of feet andseconds between life and death," he said.Government accident investigation offi-cials are sifting through the wreckage totry to establish the cause of the crash.

Hill is the only driver to have won theTriple Crown of the Indianapolis 500, the24 hours of Le Mans and the Formula One

World Championship. He won the worldtitle with BRM in 1962 and again in 1968,with Lotus. Hill retired from Formula 1mid-season so he could concentrate oncoaching Brise, a promising new driver inhis own fledgling team Embassy Hill.

In ContextThree thousand people attended Graham

Hill's funeral in St Alban's, Hertfordshire,on 5 December. An inquest found he wasflying only 60 ft (18.3m) above the groundwhen the plane hit the tree - but did notrealise because of the poor visibility.Verdicts of accidental death were returnedfor all six occupants of the plane. Hill'sson, Damon, followed his father intoFormula One racing and won the worldchampionship in 1996.

mind if the allegedly artful tax dodger fromMessilona is actually playing but to hearhim being talked about non-stop whileBayern are serving up something special toan Arsenal side that had mugged them inthe previous game was a bit much. It was,it must be said, balanced out by one themost ridiculous things I ever heard a pun-dit say. Now, depending on which paediayou rely on pundit can mean differentthings but the general gist is that it is a'learned man.' I once actually met a pukkapundit and asked him what a pundit wasand he told me it is someone who doesn'tcall himself a pundit. So there you go.Anyhoo, this being Blighty and Blightybeing great because of its naval exploitsand the modern interpretation of punditbeing 'talking head' and 'head' in navalparlance meaning 'toilet' then a footballpundit in Blighty really is talking toilet. This particular bout of pundarroeah cameduring the recent Bavarian demolition ofthat team from North Woolwich. Munichhad just scored their third goal when, dis-

appointing to hear from a Scouser, thetalking toilet to the left of the commenta-tor said that "Bayern aren't all that good."It makes you wonder...

On the subject of wonder today we hosta side with a unique history, influencingwhich colour shirt the English national sidewore and inspiring the formation of a sidein Brazil that would go onto become some-thing of a powerhouse in world football;they also inflicted an 11-3 mauling againstnone other than Manchester United, arecord defeat on the Mancunian giants thatstands to this day. The club has done wellto hold onto its traditional values and occa-sionally heads off on tour to Brazil and justa few years ago played their SouthAmerican namesakes in front of 30,000spectators. History aside, they are devel-oping a reputation of their own as a goodfootballing side that tries to get the balldown and play and has no problem withthe physical side of the game. I am expect-ing a real test today!

does training a couple of evenings a weekis a dedicated person to do that. It's toughand it makes you tough. Look at someoneworking on a building site who gets theopportunity to be a professional footballer. They will think 'well I don't want to goback to that' and they will do everythingthey can to make it. Take the lad broughtup since the age 12 who's been surround-ed by it at a big club. I'm not so sure allof them will have that same hunger."

Aldershot's Smith says as well as nonleague experience equipping players withmore hunger, it can help their develop-ment: "The academies are great for gettingtechnical players but are they ready formen's football? There has got to be acompetitive edge. It matters if you areconceding goals as a defender." Stil lagrees: "Academy football is very, verygood technically, but the harsh reality isthat you have got to be able to compete -to run, to challenge, tackle, have physical-ity about you. And with the greatestrespect, under-21 football doesn't achievethat. You have to teach them how to winas well. If they leave it too late to teachthem to win, they can't adapt to the phys-icality and pace of first-team football."

So, how do you spot a talent? Still signedDwight Gayle for Dagenham in 2011 - twoyears later he joined Crystal Palace, viaPeterborough and ex-Scotland internation-al Craig Mackail-Smith - now reunited withthe manager at Luton. But mining a gemfrom non-league takes hard work, he says."Too many people are looking at DVDs, orusing databases such as Wyscout ratherthan doing the hard miles. There are play-ers out there - but you have to get outthere and watch them. DVDs don't tell youthe strengths and weaknesses the same asif you are there watching, in terms ofmovement, desire and so on."

But the next Vardy may not leap instant-ly leap out at scouts who do go along."It's easy to look at a Ronaldo or a Messior a Neymar or a Rooney and say 'they area good player'," Still says. "You don't haveto be a great judge to look at them and

recognise that. It's looking a bit deeperthan that, looking for people that have theingredients you can work on and developand saying to yourself, 'they have gotsomething'."

I found the article a fascinating insightinto how top lower league managers, espe-cially John Still who is very well known tous at Grays Athletic, as a player, coach andmanager, recognise the talent we have atour level of the game. Our former manag-er, Mark Stimson, really showed the wayforward over ten years ago, when heripped up the old ‘non league manual’ ofsigning journeyman ex-pros to get you upthe football Pyramid. Under MikeWoodward’s direction, he took the club intoa full-time environment and took youngplayers from some top clubs where theyhad been released too soon and encour-aged them to start their careers again.

I was privileged to see the likes of FreddyEastwood, Gary Hooper, Aaron McLean,Michael Kightly, Stuart Thurgood and thelate Mitchell Cole in a Blues shirt after theyhad been rejected in the professional gameat an early age. They all made good sub-sequent career moves and it was clear thatthey all had the requisite skills to move upthe Pyramid again after they put their earlydisappointments behind them. They wereindeed ‘non league gems’.

A number of our latest group of playershave also been showing signs of progressunder the watchful eyes of Mark Bentleyand Glen Little and attracting attentionfrom clubs much higher up the football lad-der. I hope for their sakes they listen tothe advice offered to them and when thetime is right make an informed judgmentthat is in their best interests. Football is ashort career and although as John Stillsays, a few, like Jamie Vardy, can findfinancial security from a lucrative PremierLeague deal, many more will have to fallback on a career outside football in laterlife.

After a hiatus of a few programmes I findmyself back in the hot seat again. I needto start my article by offering thanks toGlyn Jarvis who stood in as editor for theprogrammes in my absence and has donesuch a sterling job that I almost findmyself wondering whether he’s vying forthe position on a permanent basis.Answers on a postcard please. I also wouldlike to offer thanks to David Barnes forwriting the Trust article on my behalf. Ithoroughly enjoyed reading his articles andshall in all likelihood be pressuring him tosupply them on a more regular basis asthey complement my meagre offerings per-fectly.

Our thoughts this week go out to AlanRoberts whose mother passed away lastweek only a few weeks after he lost hisfather. Everyone at the Trust wishes Alanand his family well and we look forward toseeing him back at a game soon. It wasgreat to see Steve Allen (Muttley) back atMill Field for the Enfield match lastSaturday after his recent stroke. I ampleased to report that you cannot indeedkeep a good man down – welcome backSteve. The latest messages regarding CarolTillett and Alan Mills are also positive, sohopefully the supporters will also be backto full strength soon. Proving that the drawof Grays Athletic FC stretches far and wide,I recently received a letter from a fanbased in Italy, which I hope to be able toinclude in the VCD programme. It falls tome to remind our supporters that as partof our 125th year celebrations the Club, supported by the Supporters Trust, is hold-ing a Grand Presentation Night at the endof the season to celebrate such a greatachievement. This will be held at theLangdon Hills Golf Club with 120 seatsavailable at £25 each. Full details will fol-low soon. We will be looking for sponsorsfor the cost of tickets for our players andany donations would be gratefully rec-eived.

I was gratified at the Enfield game to beinformed of three further home gamesponsorships, which are much appreciated

by Club and Trust alike. A quick glance attoday’s centre pages of the programmeshows that we now have only 3 homegames left to be sponsored – VCD Athletic,Farnborough and Wingate & Finchley. Ifyou are interested in reducing this number, please contact either Steve Skinner orDavid Barnes. Today sees us attempt toprogress further in the FA Trophy againstCorinthian-Casuals from the Ryman LeagueDivision 1 South. The Trust would like tothank Graham Deats for his sponsorshiptoday on behalf of the Thurrock Food Bank. Finally, my wife asked me last weekwhether I’ve missed not doing the pro-gramme of late, or whether it’s been arelief. Maidstone when at Fulham. So is there more talent in non-league

football? With 84 divisions across 58leagues, the National League System ishome to thousands of players. Some ofthem are potentially special, too, says IanConcannon, joint boss of Didcot Town. Theside from Southern League Division OneSouth West - the eighth tier of English foot-ball - were the lowest-ranked side in the FACup first round. Despite a 3-0 exit at thehands of League Two, Exeter, Concannonsays there are players at his club and divi-sion with the talent to go further in thegame.

"There are some good players. Ourleague is a tough league to get out of, bet-ter than people think. There are gems outthere. And if league clubs or decent non-league clubs want to get hold of young tal-ent and nurture them, then they only needto look down the leagues and see whatthere is." Players can help themselves toget noticed too. Brackley Town managerKevin Wilkin saw his side draw 2-2 withNewport in the FA Cup to earn a replay andtold the BBC: "This is the biggest windowof opportunity for these lads. It gives thema chance to show what they are all about."

"The whole attitude of players and clubsnow has completely changed," addsConcannon. "It was very old school when Iwas playing. We'd turn up, we'd warm up,we'd have a game of football then have abeer in the bar. Now it's totally different.Players nowadays are really looking afterthemselves."

"The rewards are certainly driving some ofthis," says Still. "If you become a PremierLeague player, the rewards now are stag-gering. It's mind-blowing what you canachieve if you make it. If you play in thePremier League for five, six, seven yearsyou don't have to worry about workingagain.” Are clubs tapping into non-leaguefootball? "You just don't know who's watch-ing games of football, so it's important thatthe lads give everything they've got," saysConcannon.

Aldershot boss Barry Smith, who saw hisNational League side earn a replay againstLeague One Bradford City in the F A Cup

1st Round, says scouts are a regular fixtureat non league games: "I don't know if thePremier League send scouts to our games, but there are definitely scouts from LeagueOne and League Two. There's a definiteinterest in a few players we have got."

John Still, however, believes clubs higherup the pyramid are more focused on play-ers from abroad, or developing their ownyouths - Manchester City last year openeda new academy that cost £200 million todevelop. He also cited Tottenham spendingthe money they got from the sale of GarethBale on foreign talent "and their best play-er is Harry Kane, who was on theirdoorstep!”

"The top-level Premier League clubs areprobably more inclined to let a non-leagueplayer go to a League Two, League One oreven Championship club first and then buythem," he adds. "But scouting networkshave reduced in recent years. At the toplevel they have probably got a largerecruitment staff, but I'm not so sure if youcome down the Football League. "TheFootball League clubs need to be braver.Getting someone from abroad for a lot ofmoney is taking a chance. Spending£60,000, £70,000 or £100,000 on someoneisn't a chance, certainly for the big clubs. Ithink scouts have to be brave enough torecommend them to the chief executiveand the manager and they have to bebrave enough to give these people achance."

Vardy is being praised for his high work-rate, which many have put down to hisnon-league grounding. Still says the expe-riences of non-league players make themmore determined to make it in the profes-sional ranks - if they have the talent to getthere. He agrees with Concannon thatamateurs are more driven than before:"There's no question that players arebehaving more professionally now as yougo down the leagues. Look at trainingregimes - they might not do it as often ifthey are part-time, but the work they putin is no different.

"The guy that goes to work all week and

Corinthian-

Casuals FC

The Corinthian-Casuals Football Club wasformed in 1939 following the merger of thetwo great amateur sides bearing thosenames.

The CorinthiansThe Corinthians were founded in 1882 by

N.L."Pa" Jackson, Asst. Hon. Sec. of theFootball Association. His aim was to devel-op a club side capable of challengingScotland at international level.

Within four years, calling on the bestamateurs from the public schools and uni-versities, there were nine Corinthians inthe England team. Twice, the nationalsquad consisted of all Corinthian players. The Corinthians went on to challenge someof the top professional teams in the landincluding, in 1904, beating ManchesterUnited 11 - 3, still their worst defeat. They also took football round the world, touring in South Africa, Canada, the UnitedStates, South America and across Europe, including Hungary, Czechoslovakia, Spain,Denmark and Germany.

In 1910, after a visit to Sao Paulo inBrazil, the locals were so impressed theyfounded a Corinthians of their own, nowCorinthians Paulista, one of the most suc-cessful clubs in South America; in 2012they beat Chelsea to become the currentWorld Club Champions. Real Madrid, LeedsUnited and some say the English NationalTeam, play in white shirts partly in tributeto the Corinthians.

The CasualsThe Casuals were founded in 1883 with a

membership restricted to the Old Boys ofthree public schools, Charterhouse, Etonand Westminster, although that was soonchanged to include all ex-public school anduniversity players. Casuals were a strongforce in the early amateur game, runnersup in the first FA Amateur Cup Final in1894, founder members of the IsthmianLeague in 1905, first holders of the A.F.ASenior Cup in 1907, winners of theAmateur Cup in 1936.

"Casuals' victory in the Amateur CupFinal came after beating Ilford 2 - 0 in areplay before 28,000 at West Ham after a1 - 1 draw at Crystal Palace. It wascrowned by a civic reception in Kingston.

Corinthian-CasualsThe Corinthian-Casuals Football Club had

played only one game when World War IIbroke out, though it really wasn’t our fault.Come the recommencement of football in1945, the club proudly retook its place inthe Isthmian League, were it would remain

for another 39 years. In 1954, the clubbeat Epsom 2-0 to win the Surrey SeniorCup. Two years later in 1956, they reachedthe FA Amateur Cup Final, drawing 1-1with Bishop Auckland at a packed WembleyStadium. The neo-legendary north-easternclub won the replay at Middlesbrough 4-1.A year later, another good run in the FAAmateur Cup saw the club reach the semi-final. After this high point, the club slippedinto a long decline, a rare moment of suc-cess seeing them reach the FA Cup 1stRound in 1965/66, where Watford won 5-1.

The 1973/74 season was an historic mile-stone; heralding the end of the amateur. As if in empathy, Corinthian-Casuals wererelegated, for the first time in their history, into Isthmian League Division 2. Therethey would stay there until 1978, when fur-ther relegation to the basement followed athird bottom finish in four years. A numberof steady seasons were played out beforenew ground-sharing rules created by theIsthmian League saw the club unceremoni-ously thrown out in 1983/84. This comingafter 65 years of continuous membership, and in spite of a 5th place finish, simplybecause the club’s long nomadic historymeant it shared a ground, thus did nothave one of its own. Ironically, the yearthis occurred was the best in quite a while. The club reached the 1st Round of the FACup, holding Bristol City to a goalless drawat Champion Hill, before losing 4-0 in thereplay. The club also made it to the 5thRound of the FA Vase, the replacementcompetition for the FA Amateur Cup.The first season in the Spartan PremierLeague was a disaster and a second con-secutive relegation occurred.

Next year, the Corinthian-Casuals for-tunes took an upturn when they bouncedback as Champions, remaining in thePremier Division for a further 12 seasons.1988 was a truly historic year, with theclub securing its first ever home ground, merging with the crippled Tolworth FC,thus taking over the running of their facili-ties. This season also saw the Corinthian-Casuals Tour of Brazil, when legendaryBrazilian international, Socrates, donnedthe famous chocolate and pink colours fora special game. A runners-up berth in 1993and winning the League Cup in 1995 werethe highlights of the Spartan League era, before the club switched to the CombinedCounties League in 1996. This was a great-ly improved experience. In the first sea-son, a runners-up spot was achieved to atlast win back our place in the IsthmianLeague.

NON-LEAGUE ‘GEMS’ -

TAKING A CHANCE - OR JUST

SPOTTING TALENT?

BBC Sport Online news editor, MichaelShort, recently wrote about the emergenceof Jamie Vardy who has become a topstriker in the Premier League and anEngland International.

Vardy started his non-league footballcareer in the youth system at NorthernLeague Stocksbridge Park Steels, havingbeen rejected by Sheffield Wednesday as a16 year old. He broke into the first teamin 2007 and spent three seasons there, before joining Halifax Town in 2010.Scoring 27 goals in his debut season, hewon the club's "Player's Player of the Year"award. He started the 2011–12 seasonwith Halifax but moved to then ConferencePremier side, Fleetwood Town in August2011 for an undisclosed fee, believed to be£175,000, then scored 31 league goals inhis first season, winning the team's "Playerof the Year" award as they sealed theConference Premier title.

In May 2012, he signed for Leicester Cityin the Championship for a non-leaguerecord transfer fee of £1 million and wasinstrumental in helping them gain promo-tion to the Premier League in 2015. Vardyalso made his international debut forEngland in 2015. He is currently thePremier League’s top scorer, with 13 goals, ten of them in consecutive games, equalling Ruud Van Nistelrooy’s 12 year oldrecord, for the current table-topping Foxes(as at 28 November before they playedsecond placed Manchester United yester-day evening).

In his article, Michael Short suggestedthat League clubs ‘must take a chance’ onnon-league ‘gems.’ He went on to say thatnon-league football is full of players whocould make the grade at the top level - butnot enough clubs are brave enough to takea chance on them. Other coaches downthe football pyramid also say there aremore who could follow. "Jamie Vardy's nota one-off. But the talent is being missed,"said Luton Town boss John Still. Still, 65,

earned a reputation for spotting talent ashe led three different clubs to promotion tothe Football League.

He was speaking before ‘Straight OuttaConference’ - a BBC Radio 5 live specialprogramme looking at the journey fromnon-league to Premier League. He saidwhile plenty of players are being picked upfrom non-league by professional clubs, alot of talent is being ignored. "There'smore out there that deserve a chance. It'speople willing to take that chance," headded.

Steve Walsh, head of player recruitmentat Leicester, said of Vardy, "He's such aconfident lad he actually put in his contractwhen he joined Leicester for a bonus if hebecame an England player. Micky Mellonwas his manager [at Fleetwood Town] atthe time and he said Vardy could be any-thing he wants to be."Is Vardy a ‘one-off ’?Still doesn’t think so. "There's too manyone-offs for him to be a one-off. He's madea great impact and he's headlining theshow, but it's because he's a goal-scorerthat Vardy's a bit more highlighted.

"Look at people like Harry Arter atBournemouth. He has worked his way upto the Premier League and he was atWoking. Another Bournemouth lad, LeeTomlin, also came through from Rushden &Diamonds. "Chris Smalling at ManchesterUnited came through the same sort of path- because he's a defender he's not seen asquite as special, although he's playing forManchester United and has a good fewEngland caps." England boss Roy Hodgsonsigned Chris Smalling from non-league

for many years, 5th in 2000/01, saw themmiss promotion by a meagre 3 points, whilst the Reserves won the SuburbanLeague South and London IntermediateCup. In May, the club toured Brazil again, winning the Sao Paulo Athletic InvitationCup. Victories were achieved overPaulistano and Sao Paulo AC, though SCCorinthians Paulista’s U21’s inflicted a 2-0defeat. The next season saw the reorgani-zation of the Isthmian League, with a top 6finish guaranteeing a place in the newDivision 1 South. Although being in therunning for much of the season, a lateslump saw the Corinthian-Casuals slip tofinish in 10th place. However, thanks tosome astute thinking, the ground had beenimproved anyway, gaining a “Grade B”award. Thus, due to circumstances else-where, the promotion places sank to as lowas 11th and the club got to play its highestlevel of football since 1978.

Season 2006/07 saw the club enjoy themomentous honour of celebrating 125years of football with a commemorativematch at Wembley Stadium. The 2010/11season was memorable as the club liftedthe Surrey Senior Cup for the first time in57 years when Leatherhead were defeated2-0 in the final at Gander Green Lane. In January 2015, Corinthian-Casualsembarked on an historic tour to Brazil toplay the two-time FIFA World ClubChampions SC Corinthians Paulista. Thematch played out in front of 30,000 fans inattendance and screened live on twonational TV stations. Although the finalscore was 3-0 to the hosts, Casuals heldthe professionals to 0-0 for 78 minutes.Corinth won the hearts of many millions offans in the week spent in Sao Paulo. With James Bracken now in charge, welook forward with quiet optimism to anoth-er year as the eternal underdogs, punchingabove their weight. The Corinthian-CasualsFootball Club continues to take great pridein its rich and glorious history, and still sovery much more in its present day standingas the highest ranked amateur club inEngland.

• Corinthians were the English club tofield the first ever Black Internationalplayer.

• The Corinthians were so good, they reg-ularly defeated league and FA Cup win-ning opponents. In fact, in 1904, theydefeated Manchester United 11-3 – theirheaviest defeat to this day. The centenaryof that match was played in 2004 withUnited claiming a 3-1 victory.

A forward who gradually became more ofan attacking midfielder, Morgan was origi-nally with Colchester United, progressingthrough their Youth system before signingFull Professional terms in August 2001. Hehad made his League debut for The U's on4 November 2000 when he came on as asubstitute for Aaron Skelton in a 0-2 lossto Northampton Town in a Division Twogame at Layer Road and went on to makefour appearances for the Essex side thatseason, all from the bench.

From the time he signed full terms he wasa regular in the squad until the beginningof the 2003-2004 season when injury andpersonal circumstances led to him and TheU's parting company by 'mutual consent' inSeptember 2003 and, two months later, hesigned for Reading. At the end of the 2004-2005 season he was released by TheBiscuitmen and signed for Luton Town inJuly 2005. After a successful first seasonwhen he scored Reading's 'Goal Of TheSeason' on his first appearance atKenilworth Road, Reading were relegatedfrom the Championship in 2006-2007 and,in November 2007, he moved on loan toSouthend United amid rumours of trainingbust-ups and abuse from the Luton Townsupporters due to a perceived bad attitude.

He was with Southend United for twomonths and, on his return to Hertfordshire, was on the verge of signing for LeedsUnited until they saw his wage demandsand the move was kicked into touch. Hethen went on loan to Crewe Alexandra forthe rest of the season in March 2008.Effectively, he never played for Luton Townagain moving to Leyton Orient on loan in

August 2008, a move that was extended tothe end of the season in January 2009. Inthe two seasons he had hardly played forthe club, Luton Town had been relegatedtwice and, at the end of the 2008-2009season, he was given a free transfer.

In August 2009, he was signed by themighty Grays Athletic of the NationalConference. He made his debut for theclub against Histon at Bridge Road, Histonon 11 August in a 0-0 draw. Four days laterhe scored in a 1-2 defeat at The LambGround, Tamworth and that was it. Onegoal in two appearances and he'd decided, enough was enough and left, never to playfor an Essex side again and signing forMilton Keynes Dons on trial in Septemberbefore signing a contract to the end of theseason.

The Non-League

Paper

With

Sheridan Robins

As we edge ever closer to the busyChristmas footballing calendar, the head-lines just keep on coming for former Non-League starlet Jamie Vardy.

The ex-Stocksbridge Park Steels, FCHalifax and Fleetwood striker Vardy hasmade a remarkable impact on the PremierLeague having equalled former ManchesterUnited forward Ruud van Nistelrooy'srecord of goals in ten consecutive games.

His tenth of the season signified that hewas not just a one season wonder havingplayed Non-League football just four yearsago. Talent is often buried in the mostunlikely of places. But in recent weeksNon-League football has been dealt atough card – perhaps taking away from theinfluence Vardy has had on the search foremerging talent.

Unsurprisingly, Football League clubshave voted in favour of increased para-chute payments for clubs relegated fromLeague Two in to the Conference. The cashthat clubs receive is set to ascend at analarming rate. An unbelievable £750,000will be on offer, meaning that relegationwill result in around £474,000 being hand-ed out followed by a “mere” £237,000 dur-ing a club’s second year in the NationalLeague. Not only does this sort of moneydraw parallels with clubs relegated fromthe Premier League (a sore subject formany football fans) but it allows clubs toreadily spend in the notoriously “toughest”league to get out of.

Cheltenham Town are sitting pretty at thetop of the National League and, havingbeen an established Football League clubfor sixteen seasons, have the credentialsto get back in to League Two. But just ask Luton Town fans and they willtell you that nothing is certain. Surely thatis all part of the fun? Maybe ‘fun’ is not theright word for fans but the point of a pro-motion battle is to be competitive, prove

you are better and have the best side winthe league.

Forest Green are certainly on GaryJohnson’s heels to book their first-everplace in the Football League and there willno doubt be more twists and turns as theseason progresses. However, it begs thequestion of how long that will last withincreased payments easing the blow of oneof the biggest fears in football – relega-tion.

Will we really have to rely on the FA Cupto provide us with excitement – althoughbased on recent years that shouldn’t betoo much of a problem. Rising star storiesincluding that of Stevenage Borough,Crawley Town, Yeovil Town and Dagenhamand Redbridge – clubs who have pro-gressed up the ladder – are at risk ofbecoming a distant memory.

These clubs now all currently face theprospect of the drop from League Two andsurely giving them a head start defeats theobject of their past achievements?

We should be nurturing talent like Vardyand enjoying the competitive football in allleagues, not letting money cause conflictand resentment. So whichever match youmay be watching, look out for the next bigname as talent can overrule money.
