Dear Parents, Students, Staff & Community-Members:
Assalamu alaikum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuhu!
As 2012 gets underway, and we approach the end of Semester I / beginning of Semester II, we pray that everyone is healthy and happy and excited about positive change. We should each take a few moments to reflect on the year that has ended and think about how we can improve ourselves as individuals, as a school and as a community in 2012. We should also keep in mind all of those in our community and around the world who suffer from illness, poverty and/or oppression. Remember them in your duaa and help them in whatever way you can. We are all truly blessed, and we need to share our blessings.
We would like to welcome to AYA Br. Mahmoud Mansour, our new Arabic / Qur'an teacher who began with us the last week of November. Look for a spotlight on him in an upcoming issue.
Read a good book lately? Please submit a review of a book you are currently reading or have just finished reading. Grab someone's attention and encourage them to read the book. The more we read, the more we learn: Learning is what AYA is all about!
Enjoy the Winter Wonderland theme of this month's Newsletter. It is probably the closest we are going to get to seeing snow-covered trees and landscapes!
Wa jazakumullahu khairan,
Sr. Magda

WINTER WONDERLAND
White snow falling outside the window;
Something so joyful, but yet,
so simple.
Fills my heart with glee.
What a sight to see.
All the children playing outdoors,
Not occupied by iPhones and Gameboys.
Winter is a great way to spread the love.
To take those important people and
put them above.
Sitting with a blanket draped over,
Looking outside from my living room sofa.
Seeing all the families gather together
All because of this amazing weather.

Students: WE WANT YOUR POEMS! Submit your poetry to: [email protected]
I never realized your presence,
Until it was gone,
Called you an annoyance,
For oh so long,
Now that you’re not here,
I feel so empty,
You who I held so dear,
Are now history.

pot. Then Viking Manal told Dragon Malik, “In that pot, there is some Dragon Stew.” Dragon Malik got scared. Viking Manal said, “Why are you scared?” Dragon Malik asked, “Do you make Dragon Stew out of dragons??” Viking Manal said, “NO! Dragon Stew is a stew that only dragons can eat!”
Once upon a time, there lived a dragon named Malik.
One night, Viking Manal captured him with her crew. She took dragon Malik to a cave close to their houses. When he woke up, he saw big pot. Dragon Malik took a look in the big pot. He had no idea what was in the
delicious that he went to Viking Manal’s Cave Café for dinner every night!

It is very easy to make Banana Pudding and definitely yummy to eat. There were just a few simple steps and you only need a few ingredients. The main ingredients are Cool Whip, bananas, vanilla wafers, vanilla, milk, and some other things. It is very fun and simple to make. You guys should try it out.

K-Kid News
Student Council News Our student council team consists of sixteen students. Together we are striving to make a difference at AYA. So far, some of the things we have accomplished are: We proposed a change in hijab color policy to the school board. We voted on a new color and we were able to make our voices heard! We now have the option of grey or white hijabs! We also held a movie night fundraiser for AYA students and community members. We are working on: “Change for Change” charity, which is a fundraiser that will provide a needy family in our community with some extra cash. It will start in January, Insha’Allah. We provide ongoing bake sales to help our school get those added items that we need. We also have other big plans coming up, so stay tuned!
The K3 class is learning about the five senses, so this week they decorated gingerbread cookies and identified basic body parts (eyes, ears, nose, mouth, hands) and their sensory functions. The students are also learning about the letters O and X.
The K-5A and K-5B classes are learning about communities and community helpers. Each class created a neighborhood. The houses are made of empty milk cartons, and the roofs are made from the tops of the lunch boxes. They believe in reusing and recycling! They also started working on the 6+1 traits with their new Trait Crate by Scholastic.
Things are really “heating up” in the rest of the Elementary Department! You’ll find exploding walnuts, plants growing in milk…and even the occasional flying car; because it is Science Fair time at AYA this month! Imaginations are reaching to “Infinity and Beyond” when it comes to our wonky lil’ scientists and their even wackier experiments! The School-Wide Fair will take place on January 4th.

The "Qur'an Reading Relay,” was held in the first ten nights and nine days of Thul-Hijjah. The
winning family devoted time in the blessed days and nights to sit together and take turns reading
in the Holy Qur'an. Masha’Allah all members of the Rum family participated, including five
students at AYA (Mohamed - K4, Saji - 3rd Grade, Leya - 5th grade, Dania - 10th Grade, Atef -
12th Grade, older sisters, and both parents). They read ten Juz'a together. The family is awarded a
clock/picture frame to treasure the memory of the event. They will also enjoy a family dinner at a
restaurant of their choice. May all of our families treasure the Book of Allah, and may the Rum
family members always be winners in this life and in the Hereafter. We are proud of all the
families who participated and hope to make the “Qur’an Reading Relay” a tradition at AYA.

A perfectly happy place to be on a cold night, full of the perfectly ordinary and happy people. Nearby a couple chatters happily over some croissants and tea; the little girl at table four is whining for more marshmallows with her cocoa; and some people, like the man near the window, take refuge from the cold streets with a cup of coffee.
Perfectly carefree customers, anyone would think with a glance through the jewel- bright windows. Except…

Short Story by Sarah Mari, 9th Grade Let me put it to you straight- I hate Mondays.
Don’t ask why. Just know that Nellie Brooks, alias FBI agent R43, is not a very happy person to be around on a Monday morning, or you’re liable to have a dislocated jaw by breakfast. Get what I’m saying? Mondays are when I can never shake that feeling of cold dread; hair-raising, stomach-churning dread. Because I just know that it will be one of those awful I-should-have-stayed-in-bed kind of days.
Take for instance the Monday of August the sixth, exactly nine pm at the San-José Café. Picture a cluttered
Look me in the eyes. It’s okay if you’re scared, so am I. But we’re scared for different reasons. I’m scared of what I won’t become, and you’re scared of what I could become. Look at me. I won’t let myself end where I started, I won’t let myself finish where I began. I know what is within me, Even if you can’t see it, yet. . Look me in the eyes. I have something more important than courage, I have patience. I will become what I know I am. –Michael Jordan
