Andrea Baccarelli, MD, PhD, MPH, is the Mark and Catherine Winkler Associate Professor of

Environmental Epidemiology in the Department of Environmental Health at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health. Baccarelli’s research focuses on epigenomics as a uni ue molecular substrate re ecting the impact of environmental exposures on human health. Baccarelli’s Laboratory of Human Environmental Epigenomics is dedicated to the investigation of environmental epigenetics at di erent life stages. His ongoing pro ects range from the investigation of the e ects of in-utero exposures to toxic metals, second-hand smoking, and psychosocial stress on the methylome of human fetal tissues, to the study of the in uences of air pollution on non-coding miRNA in adult and elderly individuals. Epigenetic mechanisms are investigated in relation to fetal growth and perinatal outcomes, cardiovascular function, obesity, and neuro-cognition. Since 2010, Baccarelli’s laboratory has produced more than 130 peer-reviewed publications in epigenetics, environmental health, and epidemiology. Baccarelli earned his MD from the University of Perugia, his PhD from the University of Milan, and his MPH from the University of Turin. He completed his residency (endocrinology) at the University of Milan, and a postdoctoral fellowship at the National Cancer Institute’s Division of Cancer Epidemiology and Genetics.

Professor of International Pediatric Epidemiology MRC Lifecourse Epidemiology Unit University of Southampton, United Kingdom

Caroline Fall, MBChB, DM, FRCP, FRCPCH, uali ed in medicine at Bristol University, UK, in 1979, followed by clinical training in medicine and pediatrics. She joined the MRC Lifecourse Epidemiology Unit, University of Southampton, to do her MD with Professor David Barker, who discovered the link between low birthweight and coronary heart disease which marked the beginning of research into Developmental Origins of Health and Disease (DOHaD). Fall then changed her career to full-time research, initially studying the Hertfordshire Cohort where she demonstrated that lower birthweight predicts an increased risk of adult type 2 diabetes. Since 1993, she has coordinated a DOHaD research program in India, working with groups in six centers on birth cohort studies and nutrition trials in pregnancy. Fall belongs to the COHORTS collaboration (birth cohorts in LMICs). With Indian colleagues, she organi ed the rst DOHaD World Congress in Mumbai (2001) and served as secretary of the International DOHaD Society (2003-2012).

Alessio Fasano, MD, is a pediatric gastroenterologist, research scientist, and entreprenuer who founded the Center for Celiac Research in 1996. His visionary research led to the awareness of celiac disease as a growing public health problem in the US. Fasano’s prevalence study published in 2003 established the rate of celiac disease at 1 in 133 Americans. In 2000, he and his team discovered zonulin, opening up the door to a new way of looking at the function of intestinal permeability, not only as it a ects the gut, but also what role it plays in both in ammation and autoimmunity throughout the systems of the body. As visiting professor at Harvard Medical School and chief of the Division of Pediatric Gastroenterology and Nutrition at Massachusetts General Hospital, Fasano moved the center to Boston in 2013, where he treats both children and adults for gluten-related disorders. A passionate advocate for collaboration in research and clinical work, Fasano recently authored Gluten Freedom to provide patients, healthcare providers and general readers an evidence-based yet entertaining book to dispel confusion about gluten and how it can a ect your health.

Terrie Inder, MD, MBChB, is a dual-boarded newborn medicine physician and child neurologist, whose research focuses on the newborn brain. She manages clinical service within the neonatal intensive care unit, and since all her research activities are clinical investigations, her studies and clinical care of high-risk infants are tightly integrated. Inder’s research is targeted at understanding the timing, mechanisms, and impact of cerebral injury and altered cerebral development in the human infant. Thus, her studies have focused on infants at high risk for brain injury including those born premature, sick, and with congenital heart disease. Inder’s aim is to investigate the means of accurate and early diagnosis of brain injury, as well as to develop treatments and prevention strategies to reduce subsequent disabilities. Her research has utilized technologies such as near infrared spectroscopy, electroencephalography, and magnetic resonance imaging. In 2013, Inder was appointed chair of the new Department of Pediatric Newborn Medicine at Brigham and Women’s Hospital.

Associate Administrator, Maternal and Child Health Health Resources and Services Administration US Department of Health and Human Services

Michael Lu, MD, MS, MPH, was named associate administrator of maternal and child health of the Health

Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) on November 3, 2011. HRSA is an agency of the US Department of Health and Human Services. The mission of the Maternal and Child Health Bureau (MCHB) is to provide leadership, in partnership with key stakeholders, to improve the physical and mental health, safety and well-being of mothers, children and families. Through its Title V program, MCHB serves 40 million women, infants, children, adolescents, and their families each year, including fathers and children with special health care needs. Lu joined HRSA from the University of California, Los Angeles Schools of Medicine and Public Health, where he was associate professor of obstetrics, gynecology, and public health.

Chan School of Public Health

Emily Oken, MD, MPH, is an associate professor in the Department of Population Medicine at HMS and the Harvard Pilgrim Health Care Institute, and an associate professor in the Department of Nutrition at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health. Oken received her medical degree from HMS in 1996 and completed her internship and residency in internal medicine and pediatrics at the Harvard Combined Program. She completed her fellowship in general internal medicine at HMS, and obtained her master’s degree in public health from HSPH.

Oken’s research focuses on the in uence of nutrition and other modi able factors during pregnancy and early childhood on long-term maternal and child health, especially cardiometabolic health and cognitive development. She has also led a number of studies examining predictors and sequelae of maternal overweight, weight gain, and related conditions such as gestational diabetes mellitus in the peripartum period. Her work on the toxicant risks and nutrient bene ts of prenatal sh consumption has in uenced national guidelines for sh consumption during pregnancy, helping to shift the previous focus of risk-only or bene t-only studies to a broader emphasis on the overall health e ects of sh consumption for mother and baby. She has also published widely on perinatal in uences on child health including asthma and atopy. Oken’s commitment to mentorship has been recognized with a mid-career development grant from NICHD and an HMS Young Mentor Award.

Investigator and Adult Endocrinologist Joslin Diabetes Center Assistant Professor of Medicine Harvard Medical School

Mary-Elizabeth Patti, MD, FACP, received her medical degree from Je erson Medical College, followed by internal medicine residency at the University of Pittsburgh, and training in the joint Harvard Medical School endocrinology fellowship program. She is currently investigator, co-director of the Advanced Genetics and Genomics Core, and director of the Joslin Hypoglycemia Clinic, and assistant professor of medicine, Harvard Medical School. Patti’s laboratory focuses on identi cation of molecular mechanisms by which environmental or nutritional risk factors (e.g. obesity, prenatal and early postnatal nutrition) in uence gene expression and metabolic function in tissues critical for insulin sensitivity and glucose tolerance. Ongoing studies are focused on understanding how the STARS-SRF pathway, a novel mediator of muscle insulin resistance and regulator of systemic metabolism identi ed in the Patti Lab, may serve as a target for treatment of type 2 diabetes. In addition, her laboratory is investigating how insulin resistance and nutrition during early life can a ect the metabolic function of stem cells.
