Alistair Hudson is amanager for CPC, whichruns the new pet crema-torium on Shannon Wayin Tewkesbury.
He comments: “Petsare important membersof the family for manypeople and their loss cancause considerable dis-tress. In the past peoplewould often give theirpet a burial in the gardenbut increasingly thisisn’t possible.
“CPC opened the UK’sfirst pet crematoriumover 35 years ago nearCambridge to allow petowners the chance to saygoodbye in a dignifiedway.
“Demand for ourservice has increasedwith people travellinggreat distances to saytheir final farewell, sowe have now opened apet crematorium inTewkesbury and want toget everything finishedin time for the officialopening this Spring.
“We saw the imagina-tive garden the pupilsfrom Tewkesbury Schooldesigned for the MalvernShow last year and we
thought it would begreat if they could bringtheir ideas and enthusi-asm to a brief for CPC’smemorial and wildlifegarden.”
Clare de Glanville isAssistant Headteacherof Tewkesbury Schooland teaches the Year 9horticulture students. She comments:
“The studentsenjoyed developing thegarden for the MalvernShow last year but thatwas temporary.
“It is wonderful togive them the opportuni-ty to design a gardennear to where they live, that they will be able tosee develop and thattheir friends or familymay benefit from in thefuture.
“To understand thebrief we had a workshopwith Young Gloucester-shire to talk aboutbereavement and how itaffects people.
“Many of the pupilshad lost a pet, or knewsomeone that had, and itwas an opportunity totalk about our emotionsand how to comfort
someone.“It is great to have a
real brief and to haveJulie, a professionallandscape gardener, togive us the benefit of heradvice.”
Julie Ritchie from HooHouse Nursery startedout as a landscape archi-tect before starting herperennial and alpineplant nursery so she wasable to advise the pupilson how to approach thebrief.
Julie comments: “Iwas happy to help thestudents assess the gar-den space and how itwill be used.
“Understanding theaspect, soil and siteboundaries helps toinform an intelligentdesign and a well-plant-ed garden.
“I hope their contribu-tion will become part ofa place that will beenjoyed for many yearsto come.”
The pupils were full ofideas for water featuresand a wildlife gardenthat would improve thesurroundings and pro-vide a tranquil environ-
ment for people toappreciate as they waitfor their pet’s ashes to beready. For ore informa-tion about CPC’swww.cpccares.com

GETTING THE RIGHT SUPPORT after Breast surgery HALF MARATHON RETURNSTO TEWKESBURY’S STREETSThe iconic Tewkesbury Half Marathon will beback this month, under new management.

What of the worries toa woman on how shewill look in her clothesfollowing “the op” ifreconstruction is notan option? writesPam Thomas of JoyceBrooks Lingerie.
Emotionally this issuch a sensitive time butagain there is help athand. Do go to a spe-cialist bra fitter whostocks brands of braswhich are pocketed andsuitable for use with aprosthesis – a breastshaped substitute usual-ly made of silicone.
There are variousbrands on the market, some will be suitable ,others not, and , as withall bras, there is no sub-stitute for trying on andasking the bra fitter tohelp. Any good bra fit-ter will not phased orshocked by seeingsomeone who has hadsurgery – their only con-cern will be to make sureyou are comfortable inthe bra and that it givesa good look with clothesover it. If you prefer totry on garments on yourown then that’s fine –just get it checked by thefitter to make absolutelysure the bra does do youjustice. Often the adviceis not to wear an underwired bra for a period oftime- take advice fromyour breast care nurseabout this. There is agood choice of nonwired bras available, plain and pretty, withpockets from companiessuch as Anita, Royce, and Aneoma, but if youhave another favouritenon wired bra, perhaps aTriumph Doreen, thenpockets (flaps) can be
purchased to sew in. Itis a good idea to buy anew bra before you seethe breast care nurse fora silicone prosthesis. The bra should fit thegood breast well, beflush against the top ofthe breast (no doublebubbles!!) and no breasttissue should be visibleunder the cup. The backband should feel secureand firm but not so tightas to pinch or be restric-tive to movement. Youshould, as well, try sit-ting in the bra just to besure it is comfortablewhen you relax. Gettingthis right will help thebreast care nurse toensure the prosthesisbalances the otherbreast and once dressed, clothes look just as goodas before surgery. Itmight be however, thatdeep plunging necklinesare not a good idea!Should a double mastec-tomy have been per-formed then it is up tothe individual to decidewhat cup size would bepreferred. The fitter willthen judge the back sizeonly. In this case thereare some well paddedbras which might bepreferred to using pock-eted bras e.g. SilhouetteU36, an AAA cup, nonwired and well padded, available in 32, 34, 36backs only. A similarbra is Triumph AM300P,available in an AA cup, again padded and nonwired. Some brands dosell pocketed underwired bras – take advicefrom your breast carenurse on individual suit-ability and time scalesfollowing surgery.

Many people areunaware of what goeson at Vale and of thenumber of peopleinvolved in the day today running of the hos-pital.
In total, we have fif-teen employees, somefull and some part-time,including our vet andalso the manager of ourcharity shop inEvesham. Each day wehave four or five CareAssistants in, responsi-ble for the daily clean-ing, feeding and treatingof the casualties in ourcare and they are helpedby a team of regular vol-unteers, usually so atleast two per day so thatwe always have enoughpairs of hands to makesure the care of ourpatients is the best it canbe.
The hospital ismanned 24 hours a dayand our night staff arethere to tend to casual-ties that need moreintensive care, for handfeeding any baby birdsor mammals that requireit and to be available toadmit any animals thatare brought in by thepublic out of hours.
The day starts before7am for some of ourstaff as we have animalsthat need hand feedingor medications adminis-tering from first thing inthe morning. The rest ofthe staff and volunteersstart at 8am and our on-call staff member arriveslater to man the hospitalthrough the evening andnight.
The weekends arealways busier for usthan weekdays as more
people are out and aboutand therefore more ani-mals are found.
During the spring andsummer monthsSaturdays are evenbusier as we also holdour weekly car bootsales on our site every
week from April throughto the end of Septemberand we have to get thesigns out on the localroads for this, open thegates to let the sellersand buyers in as well ascarrying out the dailymorning tasks back atthe Hospital.
Call-outs to largemammals such as foxes, badgers or deer cancome in at any time ofthe day or night and weare always available toattend these casualtiesas they require knowl-edgable handling andcan cause seriousinjuries to people notused to dealing withthem.
On one particularSaturday recently, wereceived a call at around7am about an injuredfox that had been foundby a dog but was unableto get away due to aserious leg injury.
After taking direc-tions we made our wayto Cheltenham and whenwe arrived at the loca-tion the fox was cower-ing in the corner of aplaying field next to a
high metal fence. As we approached we
could see that the foxhad no use of her hindlegs at all but was tryingto get away from us bydragging herself alongusing her front legs. Shewas caught as she tried
desperately to escape usby pushing under themetal spikes of thefence.
Once back at the hos-pital, we discovered thatshe was a lactatingvixen, meaning thatsomewhere out the werefox cubs that are depen-dant on her for their sur-
vival. Nothing could be
done for the vixen as shehad a broken back andsadly, unless somebodycomes across the cubs, which, if old enough, will venture out lookingfor mum as they gethungrier, the future forthem is not good eitherunless they are oldenough to take foodbrought in by the dogfox (if he is around).
We have to constantlythink about possibleyoungsters being leftunattended at this timeof year and a large pro-portion of our intakefrom now until Augustwill be youngsters need-ing intense care.

Paracetamol 500mg issafe to take up to eightdoses over 24 hours inan adult. Paracetamol isvery safe, and does notcause any addiction.
Some patients worryit might become lesseffective over time; how-ever there is no evidenceto support this concern.
The next strongestpain killer is co-codamol, which is amixture of paracetamoland codeine. This comesin three strengths ofcodeine, an 8mg, a 15mg or a 30 mg dose.
Patients can be sup-plied with the 8/500 co-codamnol from the phar-macy without a prescrip-tion, but the higherstrengths are only avail-able via the GP.
There are a few varia-tions on this combina-tion of drugs. Somemanufactures add in
caffeine, which helps toreduce constipation
There is a strongerpainkilling treatmentcalled Paramol, that con-
tains dihydrocodeine, instead of codeine. Thisis claimed to be better atkilling pain .
Finally there are arange of pain killingrubs on the marketwhich can be helpful, ifthe pain is in a localizedspot .

THE AVON CIRCULAR WALK
! Historic Eckington Bridge spans the River Avon
With the lighter nights and (hopefully!) warmer weather here again, there’s no better way to spend anevening than with a stroll by the river, writes Jack B. Walker. This lovely circular walk offers the oppor-tunity do just that - and to enjoy a pint or two at the end of it.
The easy-to-follow routestarts from EckingtonWharf’s popular river-side car park and picnicarea, on the B4080 justnorth of the village.
Eckington Bridge wasbuilt from red sandstoneat the start of the 18thcentury and was recent-ly carefully restored.
Cross the road withcare, and go through thegate on the opposite side(1). The route now fol-lows the old tow pathalong the bank for twomiles until it reachesStrensham Lock.
On the way you willpass under a railwaybridge carrying the oldMidland Line fromBristol to Birmingham. Itis still a busy mainlineroute today.
On the opposite bankyou will see boatsmoored at Defford Quay, and as the river curvesaround to the south,Strensham Church canbe seen high up on theopposite bank.
As you reach the lock, look out for the oldkeeper’s house on an
island mid-stream. Thisspot is very popular withboaters, and many craftare moored here.
As you pass the lock, turn left up the lane (2)and walk along to the Tjunction. Turn left andcarry on up Mill Lane, passing some farmbuildings on the left, until you reachEckington Village.
Keep straight alongthe street, ignoring leftturns, until you see thefootbridge over the rail-way (3). Cross this andcarry on straight aheaduntil you reach theB4080. The Bell Inn is toyour left: the Anchor Innis across the street andalong the lane opposite. There is also a villagestores a little to the rightof the junction (4).
Turn left and walkalong the footpath, keeping straight alongthe main road. Pass theplaying field on the left:shortly after this thepath leaves the roadsideand descends, behind ahedge, back to Ecking-ton Wharf (5).

Like all organisationsTAS has had a couple ofhick ups. The mostmemorable one beingthe Summer ExhibitionJuly 2007. But even theworst flood in almost100 years could not stopthe members who car-ried on regardless. Manyof our wonderful generalpublic still battledthrough to support theirArt Society. Although nopaintings were sold andonly 42 cards, it was areminder of business asnormal and well done toall. Not even Canutecould of stopped the ris-ing water, but it servedas an eye opener thatTewkesbury area folk
are made of sternerstuff.
The Art Society willcelebrate with a buffetfor members and pastchairman’s at the BoysBrigade Hall. on June4th.
During the week ofour Summer Exhibition19th - 25th July, therewill be a “WalkingExhibition” aroundtown, this will involvemany of the shops tak-ing part, and we aregrateful so many haveconsented. This involveseach shop displaying aTAS members paintingin their shop windows. We are also sponsoring atub of flowers for
“Tewkesbury in Bloom”again to celebrate ourGolden Anniversary.
Over the yearsTewkesbury Art Societyhas gone from strengthto strength, recently wehave had many morepeople join thus swellingour membership, whichnow stands at 67. Once afortnight we either haveown painting day or ademonstration by a wellknown Artist, then acouple of times a year wehave all day workshops.
These prove very pop-ular. At the demonstra-tions we charge £3. fornon members, many vis-itors eventually becomefull members.Demonstrations areadvertised in NationalArt Magazines and local
press. We have a web-site, www.t-a-s.info, youcan also find us on FaceBook.
We are a happy bandof painters, from allwalks of life and all abil-ities, everyone is mademost welcome andthere’s always someoneon hand with advice andencouragement over a
coffee. The past years wehave enjoyed many out-ings to Art Galleries,Museums, Art in Actionand Its All About Art inBristol. Again theseprove very popular.Visiting Artists givedemonstrations in eitherWatercolour, Acrylic,Oils, Pastel, sketchingetc. In May there will be
a “Life” drawing morn-ing members only.

The Art Society began way back on 28th May 1965. As the saying goes, “Mighty oaks from little acorns grow” such was the case for T.A.S. We were grate-ful for all the like minded people and met up a couple of times a month towards the end of 1964 when the idea of an art club was first born. This thoughtmatured and finely saw their inaugural meeting on 28th May 1965, which took place at 67 Church Street, Tewkesbury.

The Government con-firmed in January thatthe fee for issuing a civilclaim worth more than£10,000 would beincreased to 5% of thesum claimed, with a
maximum fee set at£10,000.
The move followed aconsultation thatprompted criticism frommany of the judicial sys-tems senior legal figures,
as well as the country’sbusiness community.
“The concerns includethe risk that higher feeswould limit justice tothose with financialmeans,” said Daljit
Bhogal, of DF Legal.Under the new rules,
fees on a claim worth£200,000 have beenraised by £8,725, whilstpreviously the maximumcharge for claims over
£300,000 was £1,920but the new require-ments herald an increaseof £8,080 or 421%.
“We can see it reallyaffecting businesses andbelieve many companies
in supply chains couldbe unwilling to use thecourts to resolve longrunning late paymentdisputes,” added MrBhogal.
“It may not deter thegiants of industry, but itcertainly will be difficultfor small businesses.”
He said theGovernment has stoppedshort of raising the costof getting a divorce andother fee reforms as theyfeared the outcry wouldbe loud and added thatthey claim the vastmajority of cases wouldnot be affected by theintroduction of theenhanced charge ,andthat the money raisedwill go towards improv-ing court services.
“Only time will tell ifthe court system, whichhas more than its fairshare of criticism, willimprove, but this justdoesn’t feel like a greatmove for our democra-cy,” added Mr Bhogal.
“At DF Legal webelieve access to justiceis a fundamental princi-ple of our legal systemand anything that pre-vents this is worryingfor all of us.”

We are celebrating8 sucessful years atCurves Tewkesbury,
so we would like tooffer you a very
special deal...
For those who couldn’tattend, here are a fewtop tips for a goodbloom.
! Light - They can beplaced anywhere in thehouse as long as theyreceive good but notdirect sunlight in thesummer months. Ideallyplace orchids on an eastor west-facing window.
! Temperature - If itis comfortable forhumans, in general it isokay for orchids. Mostspecies will thrive at18–23ºC. When flower-ing stops, place theorchid at 15–17ºC for acouple of weeks in orderto encourage furtherflowering. Avoid roomswhere the temperature
drops below 15ºC atnight.
! Humidity - This isthe key to success withorchids – most speciesappreciate high levels ofmoisture in the air.Bathrooms are idealrooms to place an orchidas long as they receive
adequate light.Alternatively, they canbe misted regularly withclean tepid water.
! Avoid - Generalpurpose fertilisers. Theyare not suitable fororchids and can be veryharmful.
Ian Parsons was back at Tewkesbury Garden Centre by popular request giv-ing his talk on growing and caring for orchids.

In recent years there hasbeen a sharp increase inthe number of scamsinvolving charities, whereby individualseither pretend to be rais-ing money for a particu-lar charity, and thenkeep the money forthemselves, or create abogus charity, which isnot registered, and thegood cause it claims tohelp will never receivethe promised money.
Both of these particu-lar tactics are a criminaloffence. In recent weekswe have had severalcomplaints, one about amale collecting for asponsored walk in aid ofThe Brecon MountainRescue Team.
We have since been incontact with the teamwho have not had anyindividuals offering tohelp them from our areaand they had not issuedany official sponsorshipforms. This male wasgoing door to door inseveral of our local com-munities and had appar-ently collected moniestotalling several hundred
pounds. A second instance
was a male and femalecollecting on Tewkes-bury High Street pur-porting to be collectingfor a registered charity;they were also handingout leaflets promotinghealthy eating in chil-dren.
The collecting bucketswere very official look-ing with a registeredcharity number -but only a percentage oftheir cash finds its wayto charity. When chal-lenged they will replythat they are selling apublication as the leaflethas a face value of fiftypence, these individualswere warned and movedon but no doubt theywill return.
Most charities willallow you to make adonation or sponsorshipon line where you can besure your money will gothose in need.
Car crime has onceagain been the mostprevalent offence overthe last month with sixvehicles being targetedin one street alone;unbelievably three of thesix were insecure.
Once again pleaseensure that your car issecurely locked and allvaluable items are placeout of sight in the bootor glove compartment. We have made twoarrests and one male hasbeen remanded in cus-tody for a burglary andalso several vehiclecrimes but I still urgeyou to be vigilant.
Now that the summerappears to have arrivedplease can I remind allcyclists to be very carefulwhen leaving the theirbicycles unattended
when they are out andabout. Our thefts ofcycles are down on thesame period last yearand we would like tokeep it that way. In rela-tion to that PCSO SamJames has taken deliveryof a range of bicyclesecurity locks andchains as part of hisongoing crime preven-
tion shop initiative. He can be contacted

What's the point of that?Just read on and findout. You may well find itinteresting!
A young man went tohis grandfather and toldhim about his life andhow things were so hardfor him right at thattime.. He did not knowhow he was going tomake it and said that heoften felt that he want-ed to give up. He wastired of fighting andstruggling. It seemed asone problem was solvedthen another just cameand took its place.
Grandfather tookhim to the kitchenwhere he filled threepots with water. In thefirst, he placed carrots,in the second he placedeggs and the last heplaced coffee beans. Helet them sit and boil.
In about twenty min-utes he turned off theburners. He fished thecarrots out and placedthem in a bowl. Hepulled the eggs out andplaced them in a bowl.
Then he ladled thecoffee out and placed itin a bowl. Turning tothe young man, he said,
"Tell me what do yousee?"
"Carrots, eggs, andcoffee," was the replythat he got The old manbrought him closer andasked him to feel thecarrots. He did andnoted that they got soft.He then asked him totake an egg and break it.After pulling off theshell, he observed theegg was hard-boiled.
Finally, he asked theyoung man to sip thecoffee. The youngman smiled and tastedits rich aroma. "Why areyou asking me to do allthis ?" asked the youngman. "I just don't see thepoint".
The old man quick-ly explained that each ofthese objects had facedthe same problem in life--boiling water--but eachreacted differently.
The carrot went instrong, hard and unre-lenting. However afterbeing in the boilingwater for a while, it soft-ened and became weak. The egg had been frag-ile. Its thin outer shellhad protected its liquidinterior. But, after sitting
through the boilingwater, its inside becamehardened.
The coffee beans weretotally different howev-er. After they were in theboiling water theyhad actually changed thewater.
"So what I am askingyou," said the grandfa-ther, " is which of theseis best like you and theway that you behave inyour life ?"
"When trouble knockson your door, what doyou do ? How do yourespond? Are you a car-rot, an egg, or a coffeebean?"
So, reader of this taletoday, put yourself in theposition of the grandsonand see how you wouldanswer thisquestion. Think of this:Which am I?
Am I the carrot thatseems strong, but withpain and adversity, do Iwilt and become soft andlose my strength?
Am I the egg thatstarts with a soft heart, but changes with theheat? Did I have a fluidspirit, but after a death,a breakup, a financialhardship or someother problem in mylife , have I becomehardened and immov-able ?
Does my shell lookthe same, but on theinside am I bitter andtough with a rigid spiritand a hardened heart?
Or am I like the cof-fee bean? REMEMBER.The bean actuallychanges the hot water, the very circumstancethat brings the problem.
When the water getshot, it releases the fra-grance and flavour. Ifyou are like the bean, when things are at theirworst, you get betterand change the situa-tion around you.
When the hours arethe darkest and trialsare their greatest do youlift yourself to anotherlevel?

FORESTRUN IS NOOBSTACLETeam Gym & Tonic, from Bredon Hard-wick, completedanother muddy obsta-cle course in the Forestof Dean last month.
The awesome coursewas full of mud, wallclimbs, tyre carries, lakecrossings, monkey bars, rope swings and lots oflaughter - even whenthe competitors werefired at with paintballguns!
Two of the team hadoriginally planned tocompete in the 5kmrace, but in the end allnine completed the10km course of theWarrior event.
The next event forthe team is this month'sBlack light run atCheltenham Racecourse.
