One of those goals - winning the team gold medal at the World Championships - is still a work in progress, but another was re- alized Sunday when she was se- lected to join the World Bowling Writers Hall of Fame. Barnes and fellow Team USA member Diandra Asbaty are the only two American women to earn the honor. “It’s a little overwhelming,” said Barnes, who won U.S. Ama- teur titles in 1995 and 2005 and has been a member of Team USA 10 times since 1989. “Being se- lected for the World Bowling Writers Hall of Fame is very much an honor and something I will always treasure.” Barnes, who will begin her quest for a third U.S. Amateur title when the 2007 United States Bowling Congress Team USA Trials begin Monday at the Na- tional Bowling Stadium, was se- lected by earning two-thirds of the votes of the World Bowling Writers selection panel. In 2005, Barnes, 39, turned in several stellar international performances and was selected as the World Bowling Writers Female Bowler of the Year. She won the prestigious QubicaAMF World Cup and brought home four medals in the Women’s World Championships in Aalborg, Denmark. However, at the World Championships, Barnes and her teammates settled for the silver medal in team event, an event Barnes wants to win before she retires. “Winning the team gold medal at the World Champion- ships is everything to me,” said Barnes, who will get another shot at the 2007 Women’s World Championships in Monterrey, Mexico. “It’s the reason I came back to start with and it’s a goal I know everyone on Team USA shares with me.” Also announced Sunday was the selection of Asbaty as the 2006 World Bowling Writers Female Bowler of the Year. In addition to winning the 2006 U.S. Amateur title, she won the RENO, NV—With a mix of four distinctly different lane pat- terns at the 2007 United States Bowling Congress Team USA Trials, Denny’s PBA Tour star Chris Barnes expects the most versatile players will rise to the top. The USBC Sport Bowling spokesperson and five-time Team USA member is all too fa- miliar with the lane conditions the nation’s top amateur bowlers will see when competition be- gins Monday at the National Bowling Stadium. All four patterns have been used on the Denny’s PBA Tour this season and are certified by USBC Sport Bowling, a program that uses lane conditions to em- phasize skills such as accuracy, consistency, the ability to read lanes and spare shooting to achieve success. “I think you’ll end up seeing more versatility out of the team and the players who survive these four days,” Barnes said. “You won’t get caught off guard with a team that’s one dimen- sional and catches a pattern at the world championships they aren’t able to handle. You are try- ing to build a team that can handle anything and this will do it.” The 156 men and nearly 80 women at the Team USA Trials will battle for U.S. Amateur champion honors and spots on Team USA, which will compete in international competition in 2007 including the Pan Ameri- can Games this July. The competitors will face the Cheetah, Shark, Viper and USBC Masters patterns starting Mon- day. All competitors will bowl 10 games on each pattern with the top four men and top four women earning automatic spots on Team USA. Another four men and four women will be selected to join the team. Barnes offered the following analysis of the four patterns: * Cheetah: “I would use a ball with some surface, stand just inside the oil line and let the ball burn up some energy to let it smooth out as it gets to the gut- ter so you can control the fric- tion off the gutter. The other way is to use lots of speed and not very much axis rotation to keep it on line.” * Shark: “The Shark is a tough one for me, and I don’t think it’s going to be any bargain in this place. You’ll play an inside line. The furthest right anyone will be is in the track area and people will move left from there. This year’s Shark pattern is pretty slick so it’s tough to get real deep and create any entry angle down the lane.” * Viper: “This pattern can play a lot of ways. The field will determine how it will play and the guy’s pattern will play much different than the women’s pat- tern. The women will play out and the women who can move in and open the lanes up a little it the last four or five games will have a chance to put up some numbers. If the guys start by throwing the ball straighter, the lanes will get really high scoring. If they start too deep, the lanes could become a mess.” * Masters: “This is a shot- makers pattern. You’ll pick a spot and survive a little bit and wait for the lanes to transition. The women’s pattern should break down a little better because they have a tendency to play the lanes closer alike. The guys will mess them up a little bit, and they’ll have to chase quite a bit further left quicker, which will keep scores down. Guys who can line up in the track and can deal with the transition will score the best.” Of all four patterns, Barnes said he expects the Shark pat- tern to be the most challenging for the competitors with the Cheetah playing the easiest. “The Shark is the toughest match-up for most people be- cause what we see on a regular basis, including myself, is fric- tion when you practice and there’s just not very much fric- tion on that pattern,” Barnes said. “It requires more physical game adjustments than people are used to. From that stand- point, it will probably keep the scores the lowest.” Graphs and additional tech- nical details of all four patterns can be found on the Team USA Trials page at bowl.com. by Connie MarchioneNORWALK—Get ready for the first deaf mixed singles classic

of the new year on Saturday January 20th at Keystone Lanes withsquads at 12 noon, 2:00 PM and 4;00 PM. The entry fee is $35.00each try.

Southern California Deaf Bowlers is hosting its 44th annualClassic and the first place prize is $1,000 based on 100 entries. Thisyear’s classic features higher handicap to help lower average andwomen bowlers.

44 years ago the First Annual was held on November 30. 1963 atold Santa Anita Lanes. I have the first flyer and I felt funny becauseI headed a committee of eight, seven of them, Frank Bush, ErnestHolmes, Charles Hart. Vinton Conant, Bob Grinde, Ora Baldwinand George Forfar were deceased.

The first place prize was $150.00 and a trophy won by AlbertGarbett. Entry fee was only $7.50 with prize fee $5.00, bowling fee$2.00 (yes 50 cents per game) and .50 for expenses.

We do not know about other deaf Classics but our So. Calif.Deaf Bowlers Classic flyers always lists its last 25 champions as atribute to them. So come and enter in our Classic, try to win it andget your name on the list.

STOGRYN AGAIN LED WITH 861 IN DEAF TRAVEL AT KEYSTONENORWALK—Darrell Stogryn did it again leading the honor roll

Matched against Stogryn was Francisco Navarro who after a180, managed to tie him with his 235 and after a 153 third game, won the 4th game with 224 for 792. Ed Abakumoff placed third onthe roll with his 788 including games of 232 and 2003. Bob Joneshad 223-210/731, Rick Pennington 714 and Paul Taffolla 202-210.

For the 2nd straight time Abakumoff and his Riverside team beatfirst place South Bay team 11 to 9 to gain some ground. South Baysalvaged 3 points in 4th game to prevent a worst defeat. Jones’ S FValley beat Hollywood 16-4 for a big gain. Don Millwee’s 5 pointshelps Stogryn and their El Camino Village beat Los Angeles 13-7.

The league thanks Mike Piazza, Mary Jo and the Keystonestaff for hosting. It was great to have tough lane condition.

JAT Farm Clubby David Gordon

CANOGA PARK—Wel-come everyone to the JAT FarmClub update as we start 2007from Canoga Park Bowl. Thirty-seven bowlers came off of theholiday break to give us someoutstanding scores and a greattournament. I’m glad to see ev-eryone made it back safely andcongratulations to those that didwell in Vegas.

Before I start, I will apolo-gize up front if I seem depressedor stray too much. I will try tostay focus on this sport, but I’mwriting this article while watch-ing my favorite football team(Ohio State) fall flat on their faceand have the most disappoint-ing display of a top rank teamthat I’ve ever seen. The Gatorstotally dominated on both sidesof the football and Matt Jones, Ibow down to you and theGators.

Now on to our tournament. In the qualifying round, we hadseveral tie for tournament highgame. Top honors start withPatrick Smith 279-240-224,Aaron Steinberg 245-279, andAmanda Manoly 279. Now nor-mally you would look at thisopening list and figure that Mr.Smith was your leader, nope!I’m sorry, but this is CanogaPark Bowl, please read on. Notfar behind these three we haveArisha Piper 224-257-278 andEddie Sayles 277-232-227. Ex-cellent bowling to all of you.Now the remaining high scorescome in from Mark Curtis 257,Kevin Hale 255-234-245, EricKilgore 246-224, Kevin Jones235-245, Deanna Carrillo 244-225, John McCullin 241, BrentShern 226-236-232, Felicia Mara225-236, Albert Fernandez 235-221, Virgil Hilvano 234-224-222,Jerome Jordan 227-233, CharlieHair 233, Alex Warnick 232, MaxSlevcove 221-230, Jon Hogan230, A.J. Garcia 229-227, Rob-ert Smith 226, DeeDee Ho 225,Gary Smith 223-224, Justin Sims224, Rashad Sandridge 223, andAaron Williams 222. Very nice

SED Jr. Travelby David Gordon

ANAHIEM—SED Jr. Travelreturns from their holiday vaca-tion, where many venturing toVegas, glad to have you all backsafely. The group took to thelanes at Linbrook Bowling Cen-ter with near perfect attendance.A mixture of ups and downs andthe group struggled at bit withthe conditions. Well you bowlersknow me that just means we’llbe back until you master thiscenter.

Now bowling is just like anyother sport and its funny howquick emotions can change. Istarted this article at the begin-ning of the BCS National Cham-pionship football game. I’m alife-long Buckeye fan and wasriding high when I started typ-ing. By the end of this article Iwas shell-shocked and stunnedas the football game end the firsthalf. Congratulations Gators.

On with bowling. Again thebowlers scoring was a little be-low their average for the day. However, there were some scat-tered high games that give hopeand promise. Bryan Osborne ledall with 215-235/786. Not farbehind we have Delano Ross243/783 and J.D. Pelow 233-203/780.

Other reportable highs in-cluded Eric Milne 212-203-212/761, Jasmine Morales 200-215/749, Kevin Jones 201-208/739,A.J. Garcia 209/722, JamesHawkins 213/719, Felicia Mara711, Eddie Sayles 214/710, andDarren Pascual 211.

This Saturday will be differ-ent, in some way. We will meetup again this week at AMFFriendly Hills in Whittier. Pleasebe on time. Have a good week, practice and I’ll see you there.

list, and as for the top seed afterfive games, Mr. Steinberg. Aaroncame in at plus 157 while thecut line for match play (top 16)also was plus at 23.

In the next round thingsstarted to calm down a bit, butwe did have some nice notables.Hale starts off this match playlist with 225-269. Followed byCarrillo 264-225, G. Smith 258,Steinberg 257-223, Garcia 247,Hair 234-235, Sayles 233, Mara232-232, Piper 225, Hilvano224, and Sandridge 223. Thosetaking advantage of match playfor position movement wasHilvano with a six position jumpand Mara with a five spot move. Most of the movement was theopposite for the top 16 as a fewfell out of place, allowing thesetwo to move up quickly. How-ever, taking the most advantagewas Hair with four spots andinto the top five.

The finals then started offwith 5th seed Hair (+157) takingout 4th seed Sayles (+199) bigtime 256-166. Look just likeGators over Buckeyes, sorryEddie. But then Hair was re-moved by 3rd seed Steinberg(+256) 215-200. And just asquickly it was Steinberg’s turnto exit against 2nd seed Carrillo(+320) 245-194. Now againstthe top seed Hale (+348) Carrillolooked to jump out quickly. Shetook the first game in the best ofthree 196-130. But then comesHale to claim the second game215-191. And in the tie-breakerit was Hale 230-197 to claim hisfirst title. CongratulationsKevin.

Our next tournament will beon January 21st at AMF FriendlyHills in Whittier. Check-in be-gins at 7:15 and please be pre-pared to pay an additional $5for this tournament. The direc-tors will discuss this possibleincrease and let you know on ourweb site and in next week’s ad-vertisement.
