Dear Parents

I am delighted to share this edition of our newsletter with you, celebrating the many activities, events and opportunities our staff and pupils have taken part in during the Autumn Term. It also includes news of some of the activities and sporting successes of our pupils out of school in their own ‘pursuit of personal excellence’ – we applaud all their efforts and achievements.

It has undoubtedly been another busy term in school with much going on. I take this opportunity to thank the staff for the time, energy and commitment they give to enable such a variety of experiences to be offered to our pupils.

We were pleased to welcome back to our Annual Presentation Evening in November our Year 11 pupils who left us last year. As in previous years, it was lovely to welcome them all back together for one final time and to celebrate all their achievements. As always, we were joined by many staff, parents and award sponsors for this event and we are indebted to the many local organisations and individuals who sponsor our subject and personal achievement awards.

As I write, the production of ‘Bah, Humbug’ has just finished a very successful run of three nights (photographs are included in this edition) and I look forward to our annual Carol Concert at St Peter’s Church in Stockbridge later this week.

I hope you enjoy reading this newsletter and look forward to next term

which I am certain will prove as busy!

With best wishes Miss L Hiscock Headteacher

Languages Week The 26th September was European Day of Languages, but the Test Valley MFL department de-cided to make Monday 23rd to Friday 27th September Languages Week! Each day focussed around a different ‘Language of the Day’ and the whole school became involved in various ac-tivities. The Languages Pupil Leaders were on hand to encourage participation and enjoyment. Some subjects incorporated languages into their lessons – it was great to walk past a maths class and hear ‘cinquante-cinq’ from Mr Rider. The canteen staff planned a variety of delicacies to tempt the taste-buds of staff and pupils and each day saw a menu written in the language of the day displayed with flags to advertise the selections. Monday kicked off the week with German day. Staff greeted each other with ‘Guten Tag’ in morning briefing before heading off to see their classes. At lunch time pupils from all year groups met in the Sports Hall to try out handball. Miss Knowles gave a brief introduction to the sport, along with the all important rules before a fast-paced game took place. Pupils really en-joyed the competition and were all exhausted at the end! On Tuesday lunchtime pupils and staff played ‘Pétanque’. Mrs Dover, with help from Dom Raymond and Tom Jeanes, set up mini-games and pupils had the opportunity to try out this typically French game. Fun was had by all, especially Mr Rider who won against Mrs Dover! ‘Dzień dobry’ was the greeting on Wednesday (Polish day) and at lunchtime pupils were invited to ‘Rap with Rafal’. Pupils from all year groups turned up to join in the workshop. Miss Williams and Miss Berry tried their best to get to grips with rapping, but found it a little tricky. Rafal also taught the group a few other basic phrases like ‘my name is... / my age is....’. Pupils enjoyed being taught by a fellow pupil. Italian day on Thursday saw pupils hav-ing a go at ‘The leaning tower of Jenga’ with a giant Jenga set and on Friday a group of boys and girls were taught to Samba by Miss King who ran the workshop. Miss Knowles came along and joined the MFL staff in having a go at Samba. Staff and pupils were tired out by the end of a fun lunchtime of dance. The MFL department would like to thank everyone who organised, came along to or supported any of the activities. “Maths seems more fun in different languages” – Mr Rider “I really liked trying out a new sport” – Toby Brown 11W

“It was great to try out something we have never done before” – Abi Heath and Jade Newman 7A “I attended all the activities; it was great that they were all so varied and good to see all year groups mixing together. I really enjoyed the opportunities” – Dom Raymond 11W Miss Williams — Head of MFL

Visit by Author William Hussey With the lights out in the Hall, William gave a thrilling reading from his new novel and made a number of pupils jump! William spoke about how, at a young age, he be-came interested in the Gothic and Horror genre, how he approaches his research and writing on a daily basis and where he gets his inspiration from. We then had a brief overview of the history of Horror fiction, including the classics of Dracula, Franken-stein and Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde. The battle between the forces of Dark and Light was then re-enacted in the Hall; a closely fought fight ensued with 2 pupils dressed up as Dracula and Van Helsing, an-swering questions to try to beat their opponent. The pupils enthusiastically answered the questions (helped by their teams of supporters) and in true Horror style there was a twist at the end! William was happy to answer the many questions that followed and signed books for the pupils. “ I thought that William Hussey’s presenta-tion was fantastic: when he spoke about his book it really grasped me” Oliver Y9 “When he read out an extract from the book we all felt a definite chill down our spines” Wesley Y9 “He gave me a good insight into being an author” Isabelle Y9 “We are always delighted to welcome visits by authors to our school. There is no doubt they bring alive the story telling and inspire our pupils not only to read more widely but also in their own writing” (Miss Hiscock, Headteacher) Mrs Berry— English Teacher

YEAR 10 ART TRIP TO WINCHESTER

Year 10 had an early start, leaving school at 8am on Wed 16th

October. We were to meet our guides for the day at the Guild-hall in Winchester. On arrival pupils were impressed to see a Graduation Day taking place for Sports Development. Jenny and Rachael, two artists from the Colour Studio in Winchester, met us and took us on to the Winchester Mill to start our day. The Mill is possibly the oldest mill in the world which is still working. We saw the water wheel working and flour being made.

Winchester Mill

We then went to Union Jacks Restaurant owned by Jamie Oli-

ver and Chris Bianco. We had a tour of the restaurant, a talk

about the restaurant using only UK sourced produce, and a

chance to taste a variety of cheeses. We then made flat bread

and could add cheese of our choice and herbs to flavour it. Our

bread was cooked in the pizza ovens and then we could eat it!

Page 9: Test Valley School Newsletter · 2014-03-26 · Test Valley School P.T.A 100 Club Winners August 1st Prize — £25 Mr and Mrs Kildea 2nd Prize — £10 Mrs Walukiewicz 3rd Prize

The afternoon involved us walking to the Colour Studio in Winchester. We had a quick tour. Four artists of varying ma-terials share the small studio. We then worked in the work-shop in the garden to produce our clocks. As the theme for the day is food, our clocks were based on the produce that is available during each month of the year. Everyone had an enjoyable day. We could not take our clocks home on the day as they will be part of an exhibition in Union Jacks on November 27

th 2013, where pupils and

parents can go along to view the clocks, and then take them home. There will be hot chocolate and nibbles, and the op-portunity to eat in the restaurant at a discounted price.

Mrs C Crossland.

Visit from Collège Saint-Exupéry to Test Valley School

On Wednesday 9 October, 49 Year 8 pupils from Test Valley School were hosts to 49 French counterparts and 4 teachers from Collège Saint-Exupéry, a secondary school based in Alençon, in Normandy. The two schools started exchanging letters three years ago across both KS3 and KS4. The MFL Department at Test Valley saw a wonderful opportunity for their pupils and penfriends to meet and extended an invitation to their school in Stockbridge during Saint-Exupéry’s trip to England. During the visit, some of last year’s Y7 pupils were able to meet their penfriends in person but new friendships were also struck. On arrival, Miss Hiscock, Head Teacher at Test Valley, welcomed the visitors

when she was presented with a crystal ornament, as well as posters that

French pupils had prepared about their school and which will be displayed

around Test Valley School to commemorate their visit. With the help of the

MFL Lead Learners, visitors were taken to the different Departments thus

giving French pupils a flavour of English school life. Test Valley Teachers’

supported the visit by welcoming the visitors into their classroom and

interacting in French with them. Mr Rider, Head of the Maths Department, led

part of his lesson in French with the help of a visiting teacher.

Activities were also organised during which pupils were paired with their

foreign partners. A music workshop offered the chance for pupils to get

to know each other better to the rhythm of Samba music and the new

bi-lingual ensemble performed in a parade around the school. French

pupils discovered Drama during their visit as this subject is not part of

the French curriculum. The drama workshop brought pupils together

when they mimed unexpected events and played detective games. Ta-

ble tennis was a very successful activity which brought an element of fun

and competition to the visit. A great time was had by all.

Table tennis with Mr Dyke

Upon their departure, our visitors were full of praise for our school, staff and pupils. Comments from some of our Y8 pupils involved in the visit confirm the success of this event. Charlotte’s words summarise it well “I thought that the French day was fun and a great experience for both of us”. Year 7 pupils will soon be starting their penfriend exchange as well as

the other groups at Test Valley School in the hope that this enriching ex-

perience will be able to take place once again.

Macbeth Theatre Trip We left at lunchtime on Sunday 13th October to travel to the Globe Theatre in London. This is the next controlled assessment the Year 11 English groups will be completing, so it was amazing to see a performance on stage, and even more spe-cial to visit The Globe! It was pouring with rain but thankfully we were seated under cover on benches. We just had to hire cushions for £1 each. The groundlings stand at the front and get wet. Macbeth was played by Joseph Millson, who has most recently been in Holby City. He was menacing and made the character really come to life. The witches were a little strange, and having smoke rise from be-tween the floorboards added a spooky element. The ghost of Banquo was created very effectively using a lot of theatrical make up. Macbeth is a gory tale of murder and deceit, but the performance also contained an element of humour. Bodies were rolled off stage through a trap door which amused the audience. The produc-tion used hardly any props – it was very modest, but told the story clearly. We ar-rived home rather late on Sunday evening but it was well worth it. Steven: “Tell Miss Hiscock we will be so tired tomorrow at school we may not be able to pursue our personal excellence”. Teachers attending the trip were Mrs Gibbs, Ms Bushell, Mrs De Nitto, Mrs Berry and Mr Lucas.

Year 10 Year 10 have made a very positive start to Key Stage 4 and GCSE work. May I remind parents that all pupils are able to purchase revision guides for most subjects through school? All Year 10 should now be logging on to Wex Online to choose their four work experience places and payment for this should be completed before Christmas. I look forward to the Christmas trips on Friday 20th December for those pupils who have achieved their required number of achievement points. Mrs C. Crossland Year 10 Co-ordinator

Charity Committee Update

The Charity Committee have had an extremely busy term organising a number of events across the school to raise money for several different charities. Their latest events have included collecting shoeboxes for the Shoebox Appeal; organising a cake sale, a netball match and non-uniform day for Children in Need and fundraising for Movember. The charity committee have worked extremely hard, evident in how they have beaten previous school records. The committee managed to raise an astonishing £1006 for Children in Need and collect a record-breaking 147 shoeboxes. The Charity Committee are currently working on planning upcoming events to support Diabetes UK and Help the Heroes, whilst also selling candy canes in the school foyer at lunchtime in aid of Andover Young Carers.

Year 9

Outward Bound

A new year group for me and an exciting start for a few who joined me and some experts for a three day residential Outward Bound experience back in September. I don’t know if you have ever walked an uncomfortable distance thinking you don’t have the ability to keep going, let alone get to the end, when you are only half way. If you have then, like me, you will be aware that you learn a great deal about yourself when you arrive at the end and successfully complete the journey. The experience for the pupils started with a day and a half of training which included map, compass and navigational skills, team games and challenges, first aid training and camp skills including cooking their own meals.

Luke Nulty cooking spaghetti bolognaise

The pupils all thoroughly enjoyed their experience and they really did get that amazing sense of achievement at the end of their 10 mile hike.

For me, being their Year Leader, the added unexpected bonus was building a really good working relationship with each of them which I have been able to transfer back into school life.

Year 9 Saying goodbye to Year 11 in June/July was hard but the challenge a new year-group brings is always exciting. Planning how to steer them during their journey over the next three years with a new tutor team will be fun. This term we have been raising awareness of their individual targets and how to achieve these. A new Progress File system has been rolled out to all year-groups across the school and pupils are now able to plan and prepare for their future. Each tutor group has run their own assembly this term focusing on a different aspect of career planning which included career opportunities and pathways, ‘A’ levels, BTECs and apprenticeships. I was very impressed with the detail in their presentations which were very informative and the creative range of delivery methods used identified clear individuality. Mr S Langdown

20 years + of teaching and I was amazed by the level of creativity, effort and energy my Year 7 class put into their home learning task.

The challenge was;

You have dropped your chocolate éclair in some stinging nettles. Design and build a

‘mechanical grab’ from any suitable safe and clean recycled material. The ‘grab’ must be capable of picking up the sweet without you getting stung. The ‘grab’ must be able to reach a distance of 300mm and be operated by one hand only. Hugh Tims (left) was just one example of creative ingenuity shown by the class. He used a bicycle break lever and cable through a pole attached to mechano so that the parts moved together when the lever was operated. Of course the class really enjoyed testing their grabs on chocolate éclairs and eating them. Should you wish to see their wonderful work, it is available to view on the wall in Room 23. MFL NEWS

It has been a busy first term in the MFL department. In September we launched the MFL Lead Learners Programme and had a number of pupils apply to be able to help the MFL team at various events and activities. Their letters showed a real love of languages and a desire to promote this within the school. Just what we were looking for! Our Lead Learners are: Year 11 - Michaela Reeves, Alex Macey, Lucy Devlin, Tom Jeanes, Glenn Hamilton-Smith, Elliot Sandell, Mali Colloredo, Dom Raymond, Neil McDonald. Year 10 - Eve Cavey, Georgia Spayes, Kieran Hart. Year 9 - Mollie Sandilands, Matilda Murphy-Moffitt. We would like to thank them for their involvement in activities so far this year and look forward to continuing to work with them after the Christmas break. We would also like to congratulate our ‘MFL Stars of the Month’ who have been chosen from each year group as having done particularly well at something, or who have been working really hard. Each person gets a postcard home, a certificate for their record of achievement and their name on the Star Boards in the MFL corridor. The winners so far have been: September – Ellenar Bunn 7S, Rachel Butt 8A, Jack Harvie 9A, Maia Cavey 10A, Dom Raymond 11W. October – Freya Cavill 7A, Jason Nelmes 8G, Finn Kane-Smith 9S, Steven Dade 10D, Joe Gerrard 11D. November – Jensen Hawkes 7D, Lucie Brawn 8N, Matilda Murphy-Moffitt 9S, Eve Cavey 10S, Anna Grover 11W and Megan Snook 11S. As well as Languages Week at the start of the year and the visit from the French school we have been looking for ways to promote languages. We are about to start a new wave of writing letters to pen-pals to Saint-Exupery pupils in France and Year 9 and 10 have written to German pupils at a school in Rheinberg and we are really looking forward to hearing back from them. This term we have started a new club – Classics Club! It’s a chance for all pupils to find out all about the lives, myths and history of ancient Greece and Rome, as well as a bit of Latin too. This term the Classics Club members Kiley Ng, Hannah Denton, Lara Davies and Amelia Black have turned their hands to ancient Roman engineering by building a working aqueduct! If you’d like to join our club, it’s every Wednesday lunchtime in Room 63. The MFL department would like to thank Mr Stanton for the Japanese workshops he ran for us. He also organised the first MFL film club sessions in which pupils came to Room 61 during lunchtime to watch ‘Howl’s Moving Castle’. ‘We really enjoyed a totally new experience and watching the film in Japanese with English subtitles was great’ said a Year 11 pupil.

Joyeux Noël & Fröhliche Weihnachten!

Library news

Our Dr Who Quiz on Friday 22nd

November, was a great success. 49 pupils took part, testing their knowledge on The Doctor, his friends and enemies. Well done to all who participated and congratulations to our prize winners; 1

st Prize went to

Chloe (and friends) in Year 10. The Library has lots of Doctor Who books and many of these have been borrowed in the last few weeks following the Quiz and the 50

th Anniversary episode.

We have a new team of Pupil Librarians, mainly from Year 9. They work in a rota of breaks and lunchtimes, helping to tidy shelves and assisting with Returns and Issues. They also enjoy recommending books! In order to ensure that the Library has a wide choice of Fiction and non-Fiction, we encourage pupils to make suggestions of books they would like to us to stock. This term we have obtained 13 of these requests including works by Robert Muchamore, Jeff Kinney, Cressida Cowell and various non-fiction titles. The Library is looking forward to the first Schools Library Service Quiz, which will be held in the Spring term. Anyone from KS3 who would like to participate but has not yet been to see me, please do so. Red House is the only national book award that is voted for entirely by children. Three titles are in the running for Older Readers: The 5

th Wave by Rick Yancey

(film due for release in 2014), Warp: The Reluctant Assassin by Eoin Colfer (a new series from the author of the very popular Artemis Fowl books) and Killing Rachel by Anne Cassidy (very popular with our Years 7-9 girls). All the books are available to borrow from the Library. Please stop by to pick up a voting slip to make sure your opinion counts. Voting is open until 20

th January.

The Library competition this holiday is “12 words of winter”. Can you write a story (with a wintery or festive theme) in just 12 words? Make sure it has a beginning, a middle and an end. Please hand in your entries to the Library by 10

th January. Prizes and winners will be announced early next term.

There are lots of overdue books, particularly belonging to Years 10 and 11… any books can be returned to the Library, no matter how overdue they are. Please look under beds (or wherever else books lurk…) over the holidays and bring back your Library books and DVDs so that others may borrow them! Thank you.

Malaga Football Tour 2013

Over the October half term 22 boys from Y8, Y9 and Y10 flew out to Malaga in Spain to sample football coaching, Spanish style. They were accompanied by Mr Carter, Mr McDaid and two parents Mr Andrews and Mr Whitehead.

We flew from Gatwick on British Airways on the Monday morning of October 28

th – when the really

bad weather hit the UK, luckily, our travel was not affected at all, other than Mr McDaid having to take a massive detour at 4:10am as a tree had blocked his route! Our hotel was only minutes from the beach, we had 2 swimming pools and lots of other facilities to keep the boys entertained. The food was fantastic, with ‘all you could eat’ buffet style catering facilities three times a day – ideal for Mr Carter and his healthy appetite!

The boys had a very intensive training schedule with training each day and on 2 days, training and matches against local Spanish opposition. The training took place on great pitches and delivered by a number of professional coaches from the Malaga Football club. Of the four matches played the scores were: TVS 5-2 Spain

TVS 6-8 Spain

TVS 3-1 Spain

TVS 15-1 Spain

We took a tour around the beautiful City of Malaga and even introduced the boys to some

culture – a shock at first!

They did perk up, however, when we toured the football stadium and the merchandise shop!

Many thanks to Mr Carter for organising the trip in the first place and returning to see it through to the end, the 2 dads for their help and support throughout the trip and to Mr Andrews for his photography, some of which you see here!

Test Valley School’s Fantastic Four John Sebastian Taylor 8S, Charlotte Thorpe 8D, Rachel Butt 8A, and Rebecca Dean 7D All four named swimmers are members of PTASC. They competed in Freestyle, Breast-stroke, Backcrawl, Butterfly and Individual Medley races - winning an assortment of gold and silver medals between them. Rebecca Dean won 4 medals! The three Year 8 pupils all won a cup for being overall winner in their individual categories. Approximately 50 swimmers took part in the gala. The Gala was followed by a buffet and prize giving ceremony in front of parents and visitors. Prizes were presented by Mrs Caroline Moult, Chair of PTASC (also from TVS!).

Operation Christmas Child Shoebox Appeal 2013

This term, as many of you will be aware, pupils and staff at Test Valley have been busy filling shoeboxes with gifts to send to children all over the world as part of the Operation Christmas Child Shoebox Appeal. Pupils either contributed to a tutor group box or completed one individually. The response to the appeal this year was overwhelming, with a number of tutor groups filling more than ten boxes and in total we managed to complete 147 shoeboxes – a school record! The boxes will be sent to disadvantaged children abroad, many of whom will never have received a Christmas present before. I would like to thank everyone who contributed to this year’s campaign, particularly all the staff who encouraged their tutors to complete a shoebox, and the charity committee for all their help running the appeal. I feel immensely proud of everyone who got involved and I hope that the school will continue supporting Operation Christmas Child next year! The New Age Kurling Competition, organised by the Young Leaders for Wherwell Primary School, was very tense as it was a brand new event for the Wherwell pupils. Before the

competition started they had tuition from the Young Leaders and coaching during the event. The scores were very close with a ‘bonus’ round finalising the placing for the four teams. Certificates were awarded to the teams for taking part

and Wherwell are now thinking of raising money so they can have this equipment at their school as they would like to have more mini competitions. Well done to the Year 8 Leaders they have inspired a school to start a new activity.

The Year 10 Leaders organised mini game activities for two local primary schools as part of their Level 1 Award. The Sports Leaders organised the equipment for the session then they demonstrated to the pupils what was needed for the game situation developing their own rules.

The pupils from Stockbridge Primary School were

involved just before half term and developed their basic

skills with coaching from the Leaders and began to

become more confident during the session.

Some Sports Leaders are assessed during the mini games session and the teachers were looking at the Leaders’ ability to organise a basic activity session. The Leaders needed to show how they were prepared and ready to get the pupils fully involved. They were also assessed on their approachability and whether they show self-control and discipline. Wherwell Primary School were fully involved with the games activities when they attended in November. The Leaders gave clear instructions

to the pupils, advising on games activities to help develop their space awareness. All the Sports Leaders did really well during the session and those

that were assessed were recommended for the course, so well

done to the Year 10 groups - an excellent start to the course!

The annual Primary Schools’ Cross Country event was held in October 2013 on a ‘warm’ autumn day. All 7 local Primary Schools took part in the event with 5 schools competing for the Cross Country Shield. Medals were awarded to all 1

st and 2

nd place runners from the

individual events as well as Team and Fun Run certificates.

The medals were presented by the Sports and Young leaders from Test Valley who were helping to organise the school teams and marshal the course around Wallop Primary School. Holly Deere, Year 10 Ambassador presents the winners Broughton School with the team shield.

The competition was very close with some excellent sprinting towards the finish line in the individual races. Winners Broughton School

Neil Hardy Head Teacher Broughton School : “I am delighted that the Broughton team had won the event for the first time ever. The pupils thoroughly enjoyed the event and their true competitive spirit showed. Each runner used different tactics depending on their style, and all of the adults in the large crowd were really impressed with how all of the children taking part from the different schools put in 100% effort". The fun runners from Year 3 & 4 were trying to smile all the way around but some found the course a little harder than expected but were not going to give up. Well done to all the runners it was an excellent afternoon of fun and competition!!

Personal Best Education organised, with help from the Test Valley Sports and Young

Leaders, an exciting and close Indoor Sports Hall Athletics competition. All seven of our

local primary schools took part in the competition in Test Valley School’s sports hall with

several parents attending and cheering on the competitors.

The Mountbatten PBEd coaches, Josh and Luke,

prepared the Leaders before the event so they were

competent in all aspects of

the competition.

The competitors were

stretched and warmed up by

the leaders before competing.

All seven teams completed various

athletics activities including triple

and long jump events and speed

bounce.

The scores were very close and the results table had to keep up with the competition

scoring system using a laptop. Well done to our two Ambassadors Holly and Erin, for

keeping on top of the results.

Cross Country Running Race I ran for Andover Athletics Club in a recent cross country event in Prospect Park, Reading, I ran in the U13 Girls event. The race was very tough and one part involved a short but very steep hill as well as a lot of open spaces. The Andover team did really well overall as this was the first cross country event of the season and we all had to get used to it again. Within the race there were 82 entrants and I managed to come 18

Sam Waters During the summer of 2013 Sam represented Test Valley School, Winterslow Cricket Club and Salisbury District Under 15s at cricket. Aside from representing his school, village and district at age group cricket Sam continued from last year playing senior (men’s) cricket for Winterslow where he represented both the 1

st XI and 2

nd XI.

In the 2013 season Sam bowled the most overs in the club and took 18 wickets in all village matches for Winterslow with a best of 3 for 9 from 4 overs against Wherwell 2

nd XI.

Sam took 3 wickets in an innings on two other occasions with 3 for 27 against South Wilts Under 15s and 3 for 39 against Hungerford (despite being hit for two sixes off successive balls). Sam’s best spell of the season was for Salisbury District against the North West at Wooton Bassett where he bowled 10 overs and took 3 for 17 conceding just a single boundary. Sam improved on his batting in 2013 scoring 149 runs during the season (25 runs in 2012). Sam’s best scores were all for Winterslow 2

nd XI with 46 against IBM Hursley, 31

against Whitchurch and 26 against Verwood. Sam received two awards from the club at the end of season presentations. For the second year running he was Under 15 Bowler of the year and he was voted ‘Player’s Player of the Year’ for the men’s 2

nd XI.

Tae Kwon Do – British Championships 2013 Brendon Tasker Year 10 aged 14 Event 1 – Boys Black Belt Patterns: Brendon was in a pool of 60 other Black Belt boys with an age range of 12-15 years. Round one every boy performs their pattern and is marked out of 10.0 by three judges. Brendon scored 9.6, 9.6 and 9.5 giving him a total of 17 out of 20. The group was then whittled down to the top 7 (Brendon was number 6). The top 7 had to perform their pattern again, this time marked out of 10 by 5 judges. Brendon was much stronger in this round and climbed from 6

th qualifier to win the Silver

medal, losing out on gold by just 1 point. Event 2 – Boys Black Belt Lightweight Continuous Sparring: Again Brendon was competing in a big pool of boys – 30 this time. Brendon had 5 two minutes round bouts to come through and win the silver medal. It was particularly impressive how much more confident and stronger he got as he progressed through the round - as Brendon has been competing for such a considerable amount of time it can sometimes be hard to fight against boys you have become friends with. After some disappointment earlier in the year Brendon has now finally realised that for those two minutes you cannot be friends, it sounds harsh but necessary if you want to succeed! After a round robin in the first and second round Brendon progressed to the quarter finals, then the semis and finally onto the final where he won the Silver Medal. Event 3 – Boys Black Belt Light weight Continuous Team Sparring. Brendon joined forces with 2 other boys to form a team. There were only a few teams this time. Brendon’s team was lucky enough to be given a “BYE” in the first round which gives them an automatic win (and rarely happens to Bren) so they progressed straight to the finals. Team sparring is slightly different to the individual event, this time it’s a 2 minute round but point stop and scored by what 3 judges on the area see with regards to kick and punches landed. On this occasion the boys weren’t so lucky and came away with the Silver Medal.

Finally There was a break from the competition to do a presentation to those who had been promoted during the year and present special recognition awards for outstanding achievements. There are 2 Black Belt gradings every year in April and October. The TAGB committee (8 eighth degree black belts) are the panel judges who mark the gradings and decide if you pass or not. Out of all the juniors (UK wide) that would have gone for promotion Brendon was recognised as the best and was awarded a Solid Bronze Samurai Warrior to mark this achievement.

Sam Waters — Shu-Ho Ju-jitsu

I am a student of Shu-Ho Ju-jitsu and first attended a class when I was five and

obtained my first belt a year later. Since then I have studied and practiced towards gaining each further belt, learning more complicated and difficult techniques and styles. I finally achieved my (junior) black belt at junior level in 2010. Whilst I cannot be graded for a senior belt until I am 18 I have continued practising, as my ambition is to be prepared and experienced enough so that I can achieve a senior black belt before I am 20. I will then be part of a small number of individuals with a black belt in this particular form of ju-jitsu. My ambition is to then work through the various stages and obtain a grade of 1

st Dan.

In the last year I have continued to study and received a 5

th Kyu for my efforts. I am

now a Black Belt with 5th Kyu. The next stage is a 4

th Kyu, which involves a

complete syllabus of techniques and styles. The class takes place every Wednesday evening throughout the year at Winterslow Village Hall.

Kickboxing World Championships WKU (World Kickboxing

Union) 2013

On October the 20th 2013 I travelled out to Greece to compete in the WKU World Championships. I had qualified by competing in tournaments all over the Country this year. I fought in two categories; semi contact/point fighting and continuous, each fight is 1:30 then 1 minute if the fight is equal scores. In the semi contact I fought a German who won the division it was a close fight, he was winning and in the last few seconds I got a point back so the fight would go on for another minute, in that minute I gave away a few too many stupid kicks and punches and unfortunately lost the fight. Although I lost the fight I got a third. In the continuous I lost to the same guy but put up a good fight but not placing.

Kickboxing World Championships 2013 ISKA (International

Sport Kickboxing Association)

On Tuesday the 29th of October I travelled out to Cyprus after qualifying this year to fight again in both points and continuous. In points I fought a North Cyprus boy and got 15 points clear so they had to stop the fight, the next round I had to fight an English boy and won but it was closer than the first, from winning the 2nd fight I was then in the final, in the final I fought another English person but in this fight I lost but it was close, a well-deserved silver medal. In the continuous category I fought another North Cyprus boy and beat him which meant I was in the final, in the final I fought the English boy that I fought in the 2nd round in points, it was a really hard fight and really tough and unfortunately I had to settle for a silver again.

Kieran Hannan and Storm at the World Championship of Canix Running

Kieran and his dog Storm competed in the World Championships for running with dogs at Pembrey Sands, Carmarthenshire, South West Wales on 12/13 October 2013. The event is a race over hills on a 2.5 kilometre course. Kieran was running against competitors from all over the country, particularly Scotland and Wales, but was the only entrant from the UK in his age group. Kieran was just beaten for 3

rd

place, but the points from this event count towards his position in the UK championships. He will continue to enter the monthly UK events with the aim of winning these championships. He is currently on track to do this having amassed 705 points with many top three places achieved over the season. At the moment he is 205 points clear of second place.
