Then scroll down to the LCFF survey on this screen and complete the online priorities survey. There is an English and Spanish version.

The survey has seven questions to it. If you prefer, paper copies are located on the counter in the front office. Please return to the front office once completed unless you are completing online. We look forward to answering any questions you may have and thank you for taking the time to participate.

8TH GRADE DANCE

“Marvel vs. DC,” our first middle school dance for eighth graders, was well attended on November 13th. Our auditorium was transformed through posters and caricatures created by Leadership. Thank you to our Leadership students, our activities director, Ms Hedspeth, and dance chaperones for all your hard work and effort.

Fundraiser Prizes:

Lunch with Mrs. Ogan & Mr. Lee

On November 10th, the top 7th and 8th grade sellers in the school fundraiser were treated to a full day of treats at “Viking Café”! The festivities began with Krispy Kreme donuts before school and their favorite Starbucks beverage at nutrition. Mrs. Ogan and Mr. Lee were the guests of honor at lunch as all enjoyed pizza, salad and an ice cream sundae for dessert! Friday, November 13th many prize winners received an In-N-Out lunch! On November 19th, top prize winners attended a private skate party! A special “thank you” to Mrs. Sdrales, Mrs. O’Dea, Mrs. Sparacino, and Mrs. Shenouda for your time and effort in making these events possible. All of the prizes were from the support of our PFSO!

VETERAN VISIT

On November 10th, Ms. Hedspeth’s 8th grade (3rd period) history class was honored to hear recollections from Mr. Fred Whitaker, a veteran serving in Europe with the 87th Infantry Division, part of General George S. Patton’s famed 3rd Army from 1944 - 1945. Mr. Whitaker is the holder of five honor medals, four service medals and five foreign decorations including the French Legion of Honor- - France’s highest honor.

MS FIELD ACTIVITIES

We are excited to share that all of OUSD’s middle schools are playing a soccer game against each other as an after school field activity this year. A culminating game based on standings is proposed to be played at Fred Kelly stadium on December 3rd beginning at 3 p.m. Please join us to cheer our players on! Currently we stand undefeated!

HAIKU CONNECTING

As a means of communication for students, each student has a Haiku connection to their teachers’ website. This forum allows students to keep track of their homework assignments, find information when absent, and communicate with the teacher when there are questions about an assignment. Please contact your child’s individual teacher or counselor for more information if needed.

ASTRONOMY NIGHT

Star gazers had a fantastic night on November 18th as it was a perfect evening to view the planets, stars and our very own moon. Six amateur astronomers shared their knowledge and high powered telescopes to view the night sky. Thank you Mrs. Thomkinson, Mrs. Wong, Ms Sender and science enthusiasts!

FREE PUBLIC EDUCATION

Section 5 of Article IX of the California Constitution guarantees students a “free and appropriate public education.” The State Supreme Court concluded in the 1984 case of Hartzell v. Connell, “that all educational activities carried on by public school districts, extracurricular as well as curricular, must be without cost to the students who participate in such activities.” This same ruling found that “mandatory fees for participating in such extra-curricular activities as drama, music, and athletic competition were illegal under the State constitution.” Furthermore, the State Supreme Court also rejected the argument that “fees could be charged as long as the district waived fees for students who were financially unable to pay.” I would like to assure you that Cerro Villa Middle School does not engage in a “pay for play.

Thank you for your continued support. We wish you a safe, relaxing and enjoyable winter break with family and friends.

Sincerely,

Lisa Ogan

DECEMBER BOOK FAIR

Our Scholastic Book Fair is here and just in time for the holidays! Please come and celebrate literature! Did you know that reading is the most important skill you can teach a child? Of all the skills they learn, it is the one you can influence the most and it’s the door opener to future learning and success down the road for our children. Giving kids access to good books and the opportunity to choose books will motivate them to read more. And let’s not forget- the Book Fair is a great fundraiser that both parents and kids can enjoy together. Please remember that all purchases benefit our school library to provide more materials for your kids. Our book fair will take place Monday through Friday, December 7- December 11, from 7:30am-3:45pm. We will be in need of volunteers to help us in many aspects, so please call or email our librarian media specialist, Danielle Matthews if interested, at (714) 997-6023 or [email protected]. Please be sure to lend a hand as there are many different times and skills needed for this event. Thank you in advance for your support and participation!

Box Tops For Education

This year, our school will be participating in the Box Tops for Education™ program. My name is Danielle Matthews, Cerro Villa’s new Library Media Specialist (LMS), and I’m thrilled to be the Box Tops Coordinator for Cerro Villa Middle School. Clipping Box Tops is an easy way for you to help our school buy what it needs. Box Tops are each worth 10¢ and they quickly add up to real cash for our school. This school year, our school’s earnings goal is $1,000!

To help our school, just look for pink Box Tops on products, clip them, and send them to school. I have a collections basket here with me in the synergy center (library). For more information on the Box Tops for Education program, including a list of participating products and our school’s progress, visit www.BTFE.com. Be sure to become a member to receive exclusive coupon offers and recipes and learn about extra ways for our school to earn.

I hope you’re excited for everything we can do this year with Box Tops! If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact me at [email protected] or (714) 997-6023. I’m here to make our school’s Box Tops for Education program a huge success this year. Thanks for your help!

This has been a great year for us. We began the school year with learning a march for two parades we entered. Last summer, uniforms were ordered for the band and our banner that was mounted on the wall was removed and redesigned to be carried. Then we practiced, practiced, and practiced some more to be ready for our first debut. Students from the high school worked with us to help us get ready. Our first parade was on September 26th in Fullerton. To our surprise, we took 2nd place in the banner division, drum major division, band division, and the tall flags. What a thrill for us! Our second parade was on October 3rd at the Korean Festival in Los Angeles and again we brought home trophies. The banner took first place, the drum major took 3rd place, the band took 2nd place, and the tall flags took 3rd place. We were absolutely amazed!! In December we will kick off the winter holidays at the Villa Park Boat Parade with Villa Park High School’s Marching Band on December 13th. Our final appearances before winter break will be at Cerro Villa in the auditorium for our winter concerts: December 15th - the Orchestra Concert, December 16th - the Band Concert, and December 17th for the school. Then we will all get a well-deserved break. Dianne Hannah Instrumental Director

Cerro Villa PFSO Meetings Please sit in at a meeting to see what we're all about - it's a great way to get involved in your child's school! Meetings are held at 9:30am in the Cerro Villa Library, generally on the 2nd Wednesday of each month. Our meetings this year will be held on the following dates:

December 9, 2015

January 13, 2016

February 10, 2016

March 9, 2016

April 13, 2016

May 11, 2016

June 2016 (CV PFSO's Year End Breakfast, date TBA)

PFSO needs your help!

Your minimum donation of $10 goes to the Parent Faculty Student Organization. We help assist with many programs around the school, including dances, Student of the Month, Honor Society, and the 8th grade Promotion Party. Without your support, these events will NOT be possible. The PFSO also supports the Cerro Villa faculty and staff in acquiring items they need for their classrooms in order to enhance our children’s educational experiences. Please turn in your donation with the completed form (see next page or click link below) to the front office. Thank you for supporting Cerro Villa’s PFSO! GO VIKINGS!

http://www.cvpfso.org/uploads/2/2/7/8/22785828/cvpfso_duesform.pdf

DONATIONS The PE department is in need of a front loading washing machine. Ours took a nose dive and is not able to be fixed. We use this washer to wash our loaner clothes and pinnies so that the kids don't have to wear nasty smelling loaners/pinnies. We are not asking for a brand new one, just one that someone might be getting rid of or replacing that is fully functional. Thank you!
