Staff Update The process is currently underway to determine who the lucky new principal of Mt Kembla PS will be. I will keep you updated on any news. However, we have had some sad news for us, but great news for Mrs Maloinato…who has received a permanent appointment to Bowral PS to start next term. As much as I know she will miss being here, we wish her well at her new school. The exciting news is that Mrs Hush is returning next term on Tuesdays and Wednesdays to fulfil the RFF and learning support that Mrs Maloinato was doing. For the beginning of Term Three Miss Larosa will be here on Fridays to do robotics until the new principal arrives and decides if this is a role they would like to take on or to advertise. Worth a Look I found this article a little while ago and think it is worth five minutes to sit and have a read. Although it is written by an American educator and is for teachers, it is very relevant to parents and how you can also assist children become the best people they can be. Unfortunately in many instances this article is correct as it talks about how times have changed and no longer are students as accountable for their role in learning (or often as a contributing member of the family), rather education (and parents) are expected to entertain in such a fast paced world. Knowing you don’t have to ‘like’ doing all the things that need to be done is a powerful message in itself. https://www.newsobserver.com/opinion/op-ed/article81668307.html?fbclid=IwAR3FwYdb6zNcS- aYKxyZmZqfkM3biLvb_P31DlvgIn3oVs9XbBRI8xEeS5c Coming Events… International Sushi Day Tuesday 18 June Book Club – Issue 4 Wednesday 19 June Biggest Morning Tea Thursday 20 June Assembly – Choir Thursday 20 June Shoalhaven Zoo Excursion Tuesday 25 June P&C Meeting @ MK Hotel Wednesday 3 July – 7pm Term Two, Week Eight

Later in the term reports will be sent home with students. If a second copy is required please notify the office this week or next as we are starting a new list due to family circumstances changing.

Staff Update

The process is currently underway to determine who the lucky new principal of Mt Kembla PS will be. I will keep you updated on any news. However, we have had some sad news for us, but great news for Mrs Maloinato…who has received a permanent appointment to Bowral PS to start next term. Bus Assistance

Even if your child doesn’t catch the afternoon bus out of Mt Kembla I am wondering if you can assist us by adding to the voices that are asking Premier to reconsider the time of the 2:53pm bus to leave just a little later making it a more viable option for students requiring such transport. Currently for this mode of public transport (the only public transport available to them) to be used students have to leave school early, which is obviously not ideal. Any further assistance would be appreciated by us and the families that rely on the bus.

Mobile Phones

If your child has a mobile phone that they use on the way to or from school can you please remind them that once they are on school grounds phones are to be turned off and signed in at the office. They are then able to collect their phones after school on their way home. We find this removes any danger of damage to the phones or any temptation to use them during the day. Should you need to get a message to your child during school hours the office are always ready to take a message and pass it on for you. Thank you for your understanding.

Thanks P&C

A big thank you to the P&C for supporting us in purchasing Quiet (or Wonder) Walls in our Kinder, 1/2 and 5/6 rooms. These walls are like carpet that can be used as pin boards or with velcro to display posters and students’ work. The walls only went up on Thursday and Friday, so haven’t been ‘covered’ yet but already look amazing!

Habits of Mind

This week is the first week for us to look at: Applying past knowledge to new situations.

For ways to assist your child with this habit have a look at the link below:

Have a good day!

SCR News…

Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea – Thursday 20 June

Unfortunately we did not receive enough Expressions of Interest for parents to attend our morning tea so our parent component will not be going ahead.

Students are asked to bring one plate of food per family eg. cakes, slices or biscuits. The library will be open before school on Thursday for students to drop their items in. If you would like your container returned please ensure it is clearly labelled (including the lid).

Thank you for supporting a very worthy cause. You will be making a difference in the lives of people affected by cancer.

Miss Leussink and the SRC

Quiet Walls We are very happy to advise that the P & C have contributed $5,058.00 towards the installation of quiet walls to revamp the Kindergarten, 1/2 and 5/6 rooms. The new walls have freshened up the rooms and are wonderful for both display and teaching spaces. Loose Parts Play Space We are working on the introduction of a loose parts play space in the school playground. There are lots of studies available that support the beneficial impact of this sort of play. This gives kids that aren’t sports focused something else to do in the playground. Watch this space! New Look for Toilets *EXPRESSIONS OF INTEREST* We are considering painting the toilets with bright colours and inspirational quotes BUT we need a team to execute the project with a working bee over a few weekends. Do you have artistic flair and would like to be involved? Can you help? Please let one of our executive team know.

Illawarra Combined Schools Dad’s Night

Continuing the conversation about fathering This night will be an opportunity to:

• Hear from The Fathering Project and local dads talking about being fathers • Connect with other dads from the Illawarra, sharing ideas and drawing upon the wisdom in the room

• Hear what other Dad’s Groups are doing in their schools

We’re all on the same journey and can learn from each other

17 June 2019, 7:00pm Wests Illawarra Leagues Club

Food served at 7:00pm

If you require more details, please email: [email protected]

This combined Dad’s Night at 7pm will follow a training session at 6pm for dads interested in becoming a Facilitator/Presenter for TFP. For more information on either session, please email Nikolaj at the address above.

www.thefatheringproject.org

Want to be a Presenter / Facilitator? Come before the Combined Schools Night and learn how you can help us to start the

conversation about fathering in local schools and community groups.

We will be running a session to train people to present/facilitate productive Dads Group gatherings, and to learn what the research says about fathering. The purpose of attending this session is so you can effectively:

•facilitate/present a Dads Group night •promote and assist the implementation of The Fathering Project in local schools •be a support to the local TFP coordinator •be a support for local Dads Groups

The key function of this training is to provide support to the school and dads group, as The Fathering Project expands in this region. We will walk you through a tried and tested process, to engage the dads, and build a group of men who are focused on being involved and effective fathers or father figures.

If you would like to help other dads put fathering first, then come along. Join The Fathering Project’s Illawarra Coordinator, Nikolaj, and NSW Schools Program Manager, David, to learn how you

can help The Fathering Project to reach more fathers in this region.

17 June 2019, 6pm to 7pm Venue: Wests Illawarra Leagues Club

For details or to RSVP, please email: [email protected]

Training will begin at 6pm and will be followed by a Regional Dads night, starting at 7pm. Food will be provided.
