A message from the leadership team

SCHOOL CAPTAINS

Hi, my name is Sara and my partner’s name is Kingston. For those of you who don’t know us we are the Dalmeny School Captains. As of now we will be informing you of any upcoming events in the school’s newsletter.

As most of you already know next month we will be hosting a Cookie Dough fundraiser to raise funds for our Year 6 farewell. In this fundraiser you will have the chance to purchase a bucket of cookie dough for only sixteen dollars. Each time you buy a bucket of cookie dough you will be rewarded with an awesome prize. The cookie dough tubs make up to 40 cookies, all you need to do is bake them in the oven for fourteen to sixteen minutes.

Finally, just a reminder that all classes are working on their speeches.

Stage 3 speeches will be done in class ready for those students to present them. If you want to present your speech make sure you are ready.

See you next time.

Sara and Kingston

STUDENT REPRESENTATIVE COUNCIL

We are students elected by each class group to help other students. We think about and present ideas which benefit all students and our school.

At our last meeting Sophia, Anastasija, Isabella, Savannah brought up some issues that need to be looked at.

Issue 1

Children getting into arguments, especially on the playground and swearing.

Problem solving idea: SRC students to help - taking turns to wear vests and go to a teacher where there might be a problem.

Issue 2

Toilets are not nice – children block the drains with stuff, toilets blocked with rolls of toilet paper.

Problem solving idea: Put posters up high (so they can’t be ripped down) to remind everyone how to use the toilets respectfully. Issue 3

Steps at the top gate need to be looked at for safety.

Problem solving idea: Put posters up high (so they can’t be ripped down) to remind everyone to be safe.

Issue 4

The oval is dangerous and games are always interfered with.

Problem solving idea: Split the oval up into sections – ball sections, free for all area. Soccer goals on the oval so the balls don’t go into the trees and over the fences. Fundraise to get more equipment.

Issue 5

We need more equipment for break times.

Problem solving idea: Chalk for people to draw e.g. handball Rosters for people to borrow balls to use for soccer at break times for a certain amount of time so everyone gets a turn. Issue 6

Fundraising

Problem solving idea: We could have different days for different things e.g. Monday fundraising could be guessing the chocolates in a jar. Wednesday - Sport

SCHOOL EXECUTIVE

The toilets are on ongoing issue that duty teachers are monitoring and following up with students as best they can. The difficulties tend to be the times that students are accessing the toilets during learning time.

The playground is an enormous issue. We have arranged for the oval area of the play ground to be developed into a safer play area. Of concern are the barren areas on the oval, particularly last year during the very dry months where we had windy days and the dust storms that came up kept students in classrooms during break times due to the red dust swirling around the school.

Recognising the issues of the playground we have worked with the Department’s Assets branch to organise works to improve the condition of the oval. The work, due to the scope of work and the expense involved has been approved by the Department of Education to go to tender. These processes are never quick. Hopefully, we will be able to begin the new year with an improved playground.

I have attached a simple map of the proposed works. Unfortunately, like everything, the scope of work is limited by cost. What we would have loved to see for the children is not within our financial capability. It is, however, something we can build on over time. The current estimated cost, before tender, is approximately $300,000 to $350,000. We are hoping to come in under budget which will help with the work that is being prepared for the Support Unit playground which is in dire need of improvement.

If a student has been absent due to flu like illness or develops flu like symptoms while at school, they are not to return to school until they have a negative COVID-19 test and are symptom free. The negative COVID-19 test result must be sighted and/or received by the school for both students and staff members before their return to school. This is the advice from AHPPC (Australian Health Protection Principal Committee).

Dropping your child off at school

Just a reminder that Liverpool Council and Liverpool Police assign schools in their areas

to Ranger and Police to patrol on a regular basis.

Whilst it can be hard for us to accept being fined when we don’t abide by the rules of the

road as drivers it is important that we remember that this is about keeping all our families

as safe we can. The tragedy of a student being hit by a car is immeasurable and not one

of us would ever want to see this happen.

Please remember:

when pulling into the Kiss and Drop zone drive up to the next available vacant

space in front of you. Your child will see you before you see them. Teachers are

there to support the students making their way to you.

remain with your car.

students must alight from the car from the passenger side. Where you child cannot

due to a baby seat please escort your child from the car to the pedestrian

walkway.

NEW BEHAVIOUR POLICY The media has been discussing the new behaviour policy for the NSW Department of

Education.

There are some changes to come that we hope will provide improvements for how

schools manage student behaviour and provide for student needs.

The policy is currently in draft form and still undergoing a process of feedback on the

proposed changes.

There still may be some issues with the policy that will require addressing.

One of the recommendations is to incorporate a facility for commissioning services to

come in and work with students and schools which sounds a brilliant idea. We are looking

forward to what that may look like in our schools.

We also appreciate the recommendations to formally move to in school suspensions for

certain situations. Issues of violence will still be managed under formal suspensions from

school, however, we understand that long suspension times will be reduced.

We are still some time away from implementation and will keep you updated as we

receive further information.

Until the policy is delivered to schools for implementation the school operates within the

framework of existing policy.

Lost Property During the colder mornings and days turning warmer, please check the lost property baskets located at the

front gate each morning and afternoon if your child has lost any personal property at school. In order that any

lost items are able to be returned to your child, please write your child’s name on everything! You can:

use a permanent laundry marker to label clothes, hats and shoes, or sew or iron on personalised labels;

check that labels haven’t faded with washing;

go through your child’s bag with them each night.

All uncollected items will be donated to our second hand pool and other lost property items will be placed in

the clothing recycling bin.

ENJOYING BEING WITH THE CHILDREN

It is lovely to see them able to play some sport.

PARENT-TEACHER PHONE INTERVIEWS

Modified school reports were sent home last term and traditionally we would now host face-to-face parent teacher interviews onsite. Unfortunately, given the current COVID protocols we are unable to do this. We do however acknowledge your desire as parents to engage with the school and your child’s learning. At this time, to facilitate this, we will conduct our Parent Teacher interviews via phone.

Parents are invited to book an appointment for a 10 minute telephone interview with your child’s class teacher for a general discussion, or to answer any questions you may have, about your child’s academic, social and/or behavioural needs. Interviews are scheduled to take place on the following dates:

Monday 7 September to Thursday 10 September between 3:20pm and 4:20pm.

For those students who have also received additional support from one of our specialist teachers, a separate note will be sent home from that teacher encouraging you to also book an interview time with them.

Parents are required to book interviews online. At the time of booking you will be asked to nominate the most appropriate phone number to call. Please check your details when entering them. Please also note - teachers will call from a private number so be prepared to answer the call at your scheduled time. To make your booking, go to: www.schoolinterviews.com.au and follow the instructions below. Bookings will open at 9:00am on Monday 24 August and close at 3:00pm on Friday 4 September.
