Congratulations
to our
2014 Team Captains
As you know John is overseas having an amazing time visiting Greece, Turkey and Solvenia. In his emails
he makes it a point to let us know about the warm weather he is experiencing!! In the meantime as we try to
keep warm Sandra Gibbons is acting Deputy and Elaine Coleman has teamed up with Kerry in Rm 11
working on Wednesdays, Thursday and Friday. Nicola Holmes has been in P4 and will be there until Peter
Georgeopoulos returns to Australia at the end of this week. While we await the news of Kelly Bonaguro’s
fourth baby, Alex Stojanovic is in U4 on Fridays.

STAFFING
2
SSO WEEK Every year in term 3 we make time to celebrate the fabulous work of our School
Support Officers (SSOs).
At KPPS we are very lucky to have a group of hard working, self-motivated,
caring, supportive SSOs who regularly go above and beyond to make sure our
students receive the care, help and support that they need to be successful.
This support also assists teachers in their classrooms in a myriad of ways. It is
not an understatement to say that SSOs are the lifeblood of every school, we
can’t say THANKYOU enough to them for their dedication.
If you spot some of our SSOs in the school this term remember to say thankyou
for the fantastic work they do for your children and our school. KPPS would not
be the school it is without them!
“ SHOW DAY - Friday 12th September”
PHOTO CATCH UP
Photo Catch Up day has been booked for Monday 18th August (next week) for any students who were absent on photo day.

WELCOME We welcome all of our new
students and families to Kidman
Park Primary School, we hope you
enjoy your time here at KPPS.
2015 ENROLMENTS As we are well and truly past the first half of the year we are beginning to think about
our numbers and classes for 2015.
Please notify the front office if:
you have a child starting school in 2015 (we still need confirmation and an enrolment
form filled out indicating that your child will be enrolled, even if older siblings are
already attending KPPS).
your family will be leaving our school community.
you know of families who are moving into our area.
I have also began discussions with Steven at BKK on the transition on our next group of
Foundation students and their families into KPPS in 2015. If you were a new parent to
our school in 2014 we would appreciate any ideas to further develop our transition
program. Please talk to our Governing Council members or email suggestions to us at:
Last Tuesday and Wednesday a large majority of our families took the opportunity to hear about
their child’s learning. The students had an opportunity to showcase their skills as skilful
communicators, receive positive feedback and demonstrate their knowledge as ICT learners and
confident operators. Teachers also very much appreciated the feedback they also received about
their programs. Thank you again to all the teachers who worked very long days to make this form
of reporting so successful.
STUDENT/PARENT/TEACHER INTERVIEWS

PLAYGROUND This term we have had a few serious accidents
from students falling off equipment. Each time
we have done a risk analysis and the
playgrounds have been cleared by Safe Work
SA. We are however re-educating the students
on the correct ways to play on the equipment
eg. going down the slippery dip, taking it in
turns and giving each other space.
Please reinforce safety rules when you are
supervising your children after school hours on
our grounds.
The use of the NEW playground (which is not
that new anymore) near the hall is being
reviewed by our student leaders. We have had
the same roster since the playground was built
and was often over crowded because of its
novelty (and FUN). The student leaders will
survey students and monitor the use of the
playground over the next week before
negotiating a new roster with us.

CAR PARK SAFETY Again the car park is an item in the newsletter due to the parents who put
convenience first before the safety of children and other adults at KPPS.
At NO TIME should children be dropped off at the crossing.
At NO TIME should cars be parked along the fence near the swings in the new
playground.
At NO TIME should parents speed through the car park.
At NO TIME should people use disabled car parks when they are not eligible.
Police and Council presence has again been requested to enforce rules and
ensure the safety of students and adults. You will be fined if you are willing to
put others at risk.
YOUR CHILD’S SAFETY We work closely with the Charles Sturt Council to ensure the safety of everyone
in our community. Another improvement to ensure our students can be safe on
the neighbouring roads is the new path that has been laid on the corner of
Sydney Avenue and Francis Street.
A new fence (yet to be erected) will direct students to cross at the corner as this
is deemed the safest place to do so. Students will then need to walk up our path
to the end of the oval, go
through the small gate and
cross over the Learning
Centre entry road to the
corner.
Yellow NO PARKING lines
(as indicated on the map)
will be marked once the
fence is complete to ensure
cars won’t block the vision
of traffic coming around
the corner.
PRE SERVICE TEACHERS This term we also welcome 9 Pre service teachers (PST), Jason Masters (rm 7), Leesa
McDonald (P4), Lesley- Anne Petrie (P5), Nada Al-dasooqi (Rm 10), Paige Stewart
(P1) Raffael Velhuyzen (Rm8) Samantha Lazarus (Rm 12), Vanessa Switala (U5) and
Helen Ouban (returning for her 2nd practicum in U4) who will be completing their
major blocks here at the end of August.
The PSTs are maily from Adelaide University and Charles Darwin University. Due to
our high calibre of teaching staff, KPPS is highly sought after by training teachers.
Thank you to the teaching staff who competently support the learning of our future.

Ms Burrow and Mrs Grant
We have recently purchased a large quantity of take home reading books. We
hope the students are enjoying the new books with you! We speak with
students regularly about how to care for books. Please reinforce this message
at home so our lovely new books can stay new for longer.
Reading at home
We will be holding a reading session for parents and caregivers of early year’s
students.
When: Tuesday 19th August at 2:10pm

note, please see your child’s teacher. We hope to see you there!
New Japanese Room
8
During the winter holidays I was extremely lucky to have some help from
my husband David in transforming the Japanese Room. We wanted it to
represent a Japanese environment to enhance the inter-cultural
understandings of our students – one of the priorities in the Australian
Curriculum.
After much research and planning we now have a KPPS version of a
Japanese home, complete with low tables, tatami mat, zabuton (floor
cushions), shōji (paper screens), a red torii gate entrance and more.
These words have been learnt so well by all the students, reflecting the
amazing impact that relevant content and concepts can have on
learning. Ask them what else they can remember from their last few
weeks in Japanese.
It has been fabulous to see the excitement on the students’ faces as they
enter their renovated learning environment and sit at the new tables,
Japanese style (shoes off!). What will we do next?
9
こんにちはKonnichiwa,
Welcome to Term 3. I hope you kept warm over the winter break. We have had some major changes in the Japanese Room over the holidays….we’ve ‘Turned Japanese’!! Please come in and see the differences - it’s just like stepping into a Japanese home. Your children should be coming home able to tell you all about it
as we learn lots of new words related to Japanese furniture, buildings and homes. We also welcome Hiroko Furuya to our school. Hiroko is an exchange teacher from Okayama and will be working with us on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays until March next year. This is a very special opportunity for all students to learn and use language with a native speaker. Please say KONNICHIWA if you see Hiroko in the school.
On top of this, as always we have planned for a busy term in Japanese – you’ll hear more in each newsletter so keep an eye out. Here’s an overview of what Hiroko and I will cover this term. Foundation students in Unit 4 and Unit 5 will continue their learning about Japan and Japanese looking at basic geography, numbers, colours and homes. Then they will use their new vocabulary in songs, games, reading and matching activities. The Early Years students will learn about Japanese homes and develop the language needed to talk about their own home or a Japanese home. Students in the Primary Years will focus on
reviewing and extending their knowledge of the hiragana alphabet. We will once again use the Hiragana Karate Belt system to document their learning, but initially focussing on home vocabulary.
Middle Years students will also learn about Japanese homes and develop the language needed to talk about Australian and Japanese homes, comparing rooms, their purposes and different customs. Finally, they’ll do some research into Japanese house design. Please pop in and see us if you want to find out more about this term’s work, our
Japanese programme, second language learning or your child’s progress. We look forward to meeting some of you during the term.

OSHC NEWS MULTICULTURAL COOKING MONTH
Our month of multicultural cooking is going very well at OSHC. Last week we cooked a
Traditional Sheer Khurma and it was a great experience. It was a very good opportunity to learn
not only about the delicious dish itself but also about the cultural meaning that this recipe has
for some communities in the world. Good for the participants who made part of last week’s
multicultural cooking team and thanks to the family who provided us with the recipe.
SNACKS AT OSHC
At OSHC we are proud to offer a balanced snack during our afternoon sessions which includes a
fruit and veggies platter and a different savoury option every day. During snack time our
participants have the opportunity to develop a lot of different skills including proper hygiene,
social skills and personal criteria about what to choose to eat and what not to.
Our service includes participants with different dietary needs, age and likes in terms of food. For
that reason we encourage our children to express themselves and provide us with feedback
about the quality of the food and the amounts that we serve, which is different for every child.
Even though we try our best to cover all our children we also respect if a child does not feel
hungry or decides not to eat for any reason.
Part of our duty of care involves a responsibility with medical requirements, allergies,
overweight, etc. For this reason it is important to obtain constant feedback from parents/
guardians in terms of needs and likes of their own children and how they feel at the end of our
sessions in terms of the snack that we provide.
This is also an opportunity to friendly remind our parents/guardians and our participants that
we provide a snack and not a big meal in the afternoons.
If your child has special requirements please see Freddy at OSHC to assess the possibility to
deliver something more personalised.
QA2
As per our KPPS OSHC National Quality Plan for 2014, we are working this month to focus our
attention mainly in the improvement of Quality Area 2 (CHILREN’S HEALTH AND SAFETY). Our
Educator Lee Reeves has dedicated a lot of energy and time to lead the review of this quality
area.
For those who would like to provide us about feedback please find the quality areas described in detail at www.acecqa.gov.au QA2 focuses mainly in the assessment, reflection and improvement of the following aspects:
2.1) Each child’s health promotion, 2.2) Healthy eating and physical activity embedded in the
program for our children and 2.3) Each child’s protection. Feedback especially in these aspects
during August is very welcome.
BOOKINGS AND CANCELLATIONS
To enable us to meet staff radios allocations (as per SA Government requirements) parents
must book our service in advance.
Absences for permanent bookings will be recorded however, the full fee for the session will be
charged to the parents/caregivers.
Parents/caregivers who do not have a permanent booking can contact the OSHC Director to
request a casual booking, and the OSHC Director will advise if a position is available.
Please ring or text 0401121740 or email [email protected] to request a booking. Freddy Santos OSHC Director

One unusual day in the Arabana lands, all the
water was gone. Every animal complained.
Korouba the koala said, ‘I wonder where it has
gone? All the trees that grow eucalyptus leaves
have stopped growing! We need water!’
Brett the blue tongue lizard said ‘My tongue
won’t stay blue anymore.’
Then a big, white frog none of the other animals
had ever seen before, appeared. He slipped and
hit a rock and all the water came out of his
body. At that time, all the water broke open the
cracks and a lake formed. So that’s how Kati
Thanda (Lake Eyre) was formed and why it looks
white all the time.

There was young sporty boy named Jim. Jim liked to
play soccer at the park. One day he invited his best
friend Jack over to his house. They played soccer,
DS, football and spaceships. Afterwards they went
to the park to play tennis.
When they arrived, Jim heard a meow. He said to
Jack, “Let’s check it out.” They looked in the thick,
green bushes and soon found a tabby cat and its
babies.
They raced home and told Jim’s mum about the
stray cats in the bushes and asked, “Can we find
them a home?”
Jim’s mum said, “OK, but we need to trap them.”
The boys found some meat and a cat cage. They put
the meat in the cage and took it back to the park.
Soon the stray cat and its babies were caught. Jim
knew of a good home for them but he just had to
tell his mum.
