Messages from Our Principal

Welcome to all our returning and new families to Term 3. This is another busy term, commencing with the Primary

Athletics Carnival on Tuesday. We are hoping for a beautiful sunny day for this event at Berowra Oval. Please ensure

that your child’s Permission Note has been returned well before Tuesday. All parents and carers are welcome to

attend to support their child, their child’s House and all the athletes on the day. There is a lot happening this term, so

please make sure you read the newsletter each week, especially the calendar.

Professional Learning

Whilst students enjoyed their last day at home, staff were at school engaging in profes-

sional learning activities. In particular, teachers had a deeper look at the importance of

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and its impact on student learning.

Autism is a neurodevelopmental disorder which affects the brain’s growth and develop-

ment. It is a lifelong condition, with symptoms appearing in early childhood. Autism can

be characterised by difficulty in social communication; difficulty in social interaction;

and restricted or repetitive behaviours and interests. Recent research has identified 1 in 70 people have Autism.

Children on the autism spectrum may have trouble understanding or communicating their needs to teachers and

fellow students. They can have difficulty understanding some classroom directions and instruction, along with subtle

vocal and facial cues of teachers. Inappropriate social interaction can lead to challenging behaviours, bullying, and

ostracizing. Difficulties with imaginative or creative play hamper interactions with other children and mean that

many teaching strategies will not be effective. Sensory issues mean a student may not cope with noisy environments,

being touched by others, or maintaining eye contact.

There are many different techniques that teachers use to assist their students. As teachers we become familiar with

the child and their disorder to know what will work best with that particular child. Every child is different and as

teachers we adjust to suit every one of them.

Selective High and Opportunity Class 2020.

We are very proud of our three Year 6 selective high applicants who were successfully offered a placement in a selec-

tive school for 2020, as well as the two students who were placed on the reserve list and may receive an offer in the

second round. Well done.

Year 4 students who have nominated to sit the Opportunity Class Place-ent Test for a 2020 position are due to sit the

test on Wednesday 31 July. Those students will receive a note today with details of the test centre and times.

Education Week

Each year, Department of Education schools open their doors to parents/caregivers and the community to

showcase a snapshot of the excellence that exists in public schools. Education Week is a statewide, annual

event to celebrate public education in NSW. The theme of this year’s Education Week is Every Student,

Every Voice! Additional information about Education Week is available at

https://education.nsw.gov.au/public-schools/education-week.

Our school’s Open Day will be held on Thursday 15 August to showcase the work students have been doing

in science. Students will be able to present their space projects as part of the Moon Walk Anniversary.

More information will be in next week’s newsletter. We look forward to sharing a little more of Wideview

School excellence at our Open Day.

Working Together

Thank you for the positive feedback in regards to our communication. An enormous thank you to our wonderful

teachers for their professionalism and hard work to ensure the Student Reports are a thorough and accurate

representation of each child’s progress and achievements during Semester 1. Many hours of personal time goes

into reporting student progress, including the time teachers have allocated for interviews. Please join us in rein-

forcing the importance of effort, perseverance and taking risks to learn from our mistakes.

Anaphylaxis - what is it?

Anaphylaxis is a severe allergic reaction which can be life-threatening. For people at risk, anaphylaxis oc-

curs quickly after contact to the allergen.

It is very important that people at risk of anaphylaxis avoid any contact with the trigger (allergen). This is

especially important with food allergy – a severe reaction can occur if the allergic person comes into con-

tact with even a tiny amount of the food.

The school is running an awareness and information session for all interested parents and carers. Anyone

interested in attending please phone the school office 94561655 to register you attendance.

Henry shreds for Wideview!

During the first week of the school holidays many of us enjoyed warm and

cosy sleep-ins and delayed getting out of bed for as long as possible.

Not so for Henry W!

Henry and his support crew were out of bed at the crack of dawn and doing

hot laps down Front Valley, Perisher Mountain in preparation for the North-

ern NSW & QLD Interschools Snow Sports competition.

Henry represented Wideview in the events of Alpine and Ski Cross. The big-

gest enemy on both days of racing was the

weather, with a blizzard on one day and

drenching rain on the other. Despite these ob-

stacles eye witnesses report that Henry was un-

perturbed, enthusiastic and keen for more.

Henry completed both events with style and tenacity!

Looking forward to see what the future brings for this young ski racer, who is

keen to improve his performance with some race training over the coming

seasons.

Well done Henry! Wideview is so proud of you!

2019 ICAS International Competitions and Assessment for Schools

There is still time to enter the ICAS competition for 2019. The registration date has been extended and ap-

plications will now close Friday 9 August.

The assessments are suitable for students wishing to extend themselves academically and take on the per-

sonal challenge of competing in an international assessment. Your child will be presented with high-quality,

expert-developed questions, allowing them to apply their learning without the need for prior study or revi-

sion.

Each ICAS assessment will be conducted on a separate day in the computer lab, beginning at 8am (before

school starts) and will be supervised by Mrs McNally.

Each competition will incur a cost of $15.95 and is payable online via the parent portal on the UNSW Global

website before 9 August. Access this service by typing unsw.global/parentpay into a browser and enter our

school's unique access code: 40610c6c19

If you require any further information please contact Mrs McNally.

Father’s Day Stall

Father’s Day is fast approaching, and at this point we don’t have anyone to run the stall at school. Unfortu-

nately, if we don’t have any volunteer to run this in the next 2 weeks, we won’t be running a stall this year.

If you’re unsure what is involved, you would need to source and order products to be sold, price them, set

up a roster for volunteers to help on the days and either set up or arrange for someone else to set up the

stalls and handle the money. The P&C can provide some guidance. The purpose of the Mother’s Day and

Father’s Day stalls are as a service to the school, the kids love to be able to choose something small for the

significant male in their life.

A P&C runs on volunteers and unfortunately without volunteers we can’t run events.
