The tension that can occur between our personal rights and freedoms and the needs of the community was brought into focus in Melbourne during Stage 4 restrictions, following the exponential rate of increase of COVID infections occurring early in Term 3.

The health needs of the community required us to wear a mask and restrict our discretionary outdoors time to one hour per day. There was an overnight curfew. All restrictions that most would not have expected in their lifetime!

At times the needs and rights of the community will outweigh our own personal preferences and rights. This is an important learning which we emphasise at Emmanuel. Whether it is wearing the uniform correctly, respecting others at all times, or following the timetable and expectations that may not suit everyone all the time. These are all for the greater good of the Emmanuel community but can be constricting for some.

At the same time, it is important to not constrain individual freedom and opportunities any more than needed for the good of our Emmanuel community. Keeping that balance right is tricky but essential for the young women and men of the College to achieve their personal best.

Year 12Hoodies

Year 7, 2022Enrolment Closure

Each year the Year 12 students work together to collaboratively design their own commemorative jumper or hoodie: this piece is normally given to the cohort at the beginning of Term 4. In early Term 3, the Leadership Team decided that the students be provided with their hoodies before they re-entered remote learning. The Year 12s have shown significant resilience in supporting each other in a year that continues to throw challenges at them. Receiving their hoodies brought many smiles to their faces.

On Thursday 3 September we welcomed fathers, grandfathers, and other special men to our extended Homeroom. In the session we shared a prayer, our gratitude to our dads and talked about what we intended to do on Father’s Day.

We also shared this video which showcases why we love our fathers/ father figures and their importance to us. This video features some of our Student Leaders and was created by Luke Dimitriou (Year 12). To view this video scan the QR code with your mobile phone or tablet. Alternatively open your camera on your smart phone and point it at the QR code.

Between Monday 17 to Friday 21 August, we celebrated Science Week. Our Science Department gave out daily jokes and fun facts. The Science teachers created a virtual escape room for our students to participate in. The room, called Deep Blue, placed students in a submarine, hunting for a colossal squid that has never before been seen by humans. The submarine loses power and the students need to solve the clues to restart the generator before they run out of air. We had a winner from each year level. The overall winner was Seth Colquhoun (NDC – Year 8).

SeniorFood Studies

In early Term 3 our senior Food Studies students had some time in the kitchen honing their cooking skills. Due to COVID-19 we had to make some modifications regarding how we used the kitchens so that students only share space, not equipment, tools, or food. This meant there was a lot more preparation for each class to individually weigh and measure each ingredient. The Food Studies Team are also excited to announce that the College now has a complete set of Kitchen Aid hand mixers and cannot wait for the students to return and demonstrate their Masterchef skills.

RUOK?DayOn Thursday 10 September the College marked RUOK? Day which is recognised across Australia and very much supported at the College. Students changed their Zoom background colour to yellow and also wore a splash of the colour. Who will you be checking in with? At Emmanuel College RUOK? Day is every day: if you have any issues you wish to discuss, seek a trusted friend, adult or a staff member at the College.

Virtual LibraryActivitiesEvery year in Term 3 both campuses come together to participate in the LEGO Masters Competition. This year the competition was run remotely. We had many creative submissions and it was difficult for our judges (Ms Derrig, Ms Lever, Mr Gray and Mr Martin) to choose a winner each week. Every week there was a different theme including robots, rooms, bring a book to life and science. It was wonderful to

We were thrilled to have Will Kostakis join us for an author visit via Zoom on Wednesday 2 September. Will is an Australian award-winning author and journalist who regaled us with his stories of how he received a cease and desist letter from Arnold Schwarzenegger, embarrassed himself on national television during his first interview, and had his first novel published whilst still in high school.

Will very kindly offered amazing advice for our budding writers and shared some wonderful tips on his writing process and recommended some great novels for our students to enjoy. We hope to have Will visit us in person next year.

VCAL and VETLearning ContinuesDuring the pandemic our VCAL program has continued to run effectively for all students. It has allowed students to demonstrate their resilience and the independent learning skills they have learnt through the VCAL program. Even though VCAL students have had their Vocational and Applied Learning heavily effected due to this pandemic, they have adapted their applied learning submission by utilising design software, Google classrooms and the use of video journals (VLOG).

Recently our students participated in the SACCSS Running Challenge. Congratulations to Ethan Mantas (Year 12) on coming first in the Boys 17 – 20 years category and special mention must also go to Clement Skruzny (Year 12) coming in at third place in the same category. It was great to see many students keeping up with their health and fitness during lockdown.
