So thank you for your generosity. Matariki/Maori New Year Matariki is the Maori name for a group of seven stars known as the Pleiades star cluster. Matariki appears in the eastern sky sometime around the shortest day of the year, and is thought to determine how successful the harvest crop will be in the coming season. It was also seen as an important time for family to gather and reflect on the past and the future. We have begun our celebration of Matariki at kindergarten. Art and craft, cooking and planting activities will be happening during the coming weeks. You’re welcome to join us during this time to have a cuppa, help with activities or share any resources or ideas with us. As part of these celebrations on 13th June a group of excited tamariki, whanau and kaiako went on a bus ride to watch the puppet show Heaven and Earth Rangi and Papa at Forum North. It was a wonderful show with stunning puppets that told a Matariki story about the seven stars and the adventures of Waipunarangi. Thank you to those parents who came along to support us. Inspired by the stories and discussion around Matariki and the puppet show some of the children have seen, children have been making their own puppets. On the same day as the puppet show a fun Teddy Bears Picnic was held at kindergarten. Tamariki came along in dress ups, including Cherise in her onesie. Morning tea was held outside on picnic rugs with delicious fairy bread and other yummy treats. It was great to have whanau stay with their children on this occasion. Matariki Kai Hakari We will finish the celebration of Matariki with a kai hakari for all our kindergarten community on Friday 6th July at 12:30, please bring a plate of food to share. Everyone is most welcome, even if its not your child’s booked day, bring your child along to celebrate. Haere mai.
