This week was Naplan week for all Australian school students.

You may have heard on news reports, that this year’s Naplan examination was disrupted due to a number of technical issues.

These issues did not affect any stu-dents at Murrumbidgee Regional High School as we are not yet on the school list that does the exam-ination on-line.

The examination takes a lot of organisation and I would like to thank the teachers and support

staff on both sites who ensured the test ran smoothly, particularly Ms Sanderson at the Griffith Site and Mr Stapleton at the Wade Site.

On the staffing front we welcome Mr Barendse to the Mathematics department at Wade Site.

Mr King will back from leave next week, so I would like to thank the staff and students who have assist-ed me in my relieving position.

HSIE Report Both HSIE faculties at the Griffith and Wade sites have been working together as a team for over 12 months sharing resources and creating Stage 6 assessment tasks, programs and units of work. These include the Pre-liminary and HSC subjects of Business Studies, Modern History and Legal Studies. The HSIE faculties have also been working across both sites implementing and teaching the Year 7 Quest and Discovery subjects. Quest is an integrated subject based on History and English, while Discovery is based on Geography and Science. We have been regularly meeting as faculties once a term and also on Staff Development Days and this has allowed for networking for all staff involved and improved student outcomes.

The HSIE faculties at their respective sites successfully coordinated ANZAC Commemoration events. The first being a combined excursion to the Griffith Cemetery during the last week of Term 1. Students placed flowers and crosses on soldier’s headstones. Please see the photos below. Thank you to Miss Duly and Miss Hume for organising the excursion.

On Tuesday of Week 1 Term 2 Murrumbidgee Regional High School held their annual Anzac Day Commem-orative Assemblies on each site. This year’s focus was on the Importance of Celebrating Anzac Day. We thank those who contributed to the running of the assemblies, Mr Wiseman for guest speaking and to all readers and performers. All students were respectful, responsible citizens displaying the school’s PBL expectations of following instructions, caring for the community and doing what is right. Please see photos below from the Griffith site.

During the holidays on Anzac Day, MRHS students marched in the Grif-fith Memorial Service and represent-ed our school proudly. Well done to our School Leaders who were a part of the service by completing readings and laying the school wreath.

Mr Payne’s Year 12 Geography class from the Wade site recently went on an excursion to Sydney, where they completed mandatory fieldwork at South Maroubra Beach, Bicentennial Park, Intertidal Wetlands and Obser-vatory Hill.

With Term 2 traditionally being a busy term for assessment tasks for all students, we encourage students to be responsible, resilient, learners by catching up on missed work, seeking support from their teacher and com-municating if they will be absent and, most of all, persevere with the challenges that this term presents with assessments. Students are also encouraged to speak with the Head Teachers of HSIE (Miss Hume, Miss John-son and Miss Gorton) with any issues they may have with assessments.

Miss Johnson (Wade Site HT HSIE Monday and Tuesday), Miss Gorton (Wade Site Relieving HT HSIE Wednesday-Friday) Miss Hume (Relieving HT HSIE Griffith Site)

Jack’s Creek - Cocoparra National Park Towards the end of Term 1, Year 7 ventured out to Jack’s Creek in Cocoparra National Park. Students completed a 2.4km bushwalk around the edge of the gorge, taking in the sights and completing a variety of activities. Students classified different rocks and identified how the gorge was formed over millions of years. They admired the view, com-pleting field sketches to identify key features and changes in the landscape. By the end of the day, Year 7 were worn out, but proud of their achievements both in completing the track and working towards their Jack’s Creek Case Study Task.

SRC ReportGriffith SiteThe SRC are enthusiastic and thoughtful and are in constant contact with their year groups. They run the assemblies and have participated in the organi-sation of the Griffith site’s Anzac Day ceremony. In the pipeline are talks for Years 7 and 8 and a pro-posed whole school social.

A three day leadership camp for all SRC members, run by Optimum Experiences at Kangaroo Valley, is being organised for later in Term 2.

The 2019 SRC members at the Griffith Site are: Atlas Bartrop , Benjamin Basei , Hannah Bennett-Poyn-ter, Jordan Bowen, Raisa Cabahug, Salesi Fatafehi, Christine Favero, Aeesha Fifita, Nicholas Green, Alani Langi, Angelina Lemoto, Ava Low, Jessica Pianui, Samm Power, Savera Tanuvasa.

Mr Michael ThompsonSRC Co-Ordinator Griffith Site

Wade Site2019 has seen a frantic start for the SRC with new members joining the team and a number of fund raising events already taking place. So far this year the SRC have run a very successful Valentine’s Day event selling flowers and held sausage sizzles for

Harmony Day and the Year 7 parents Meet and Greet evening.

At the end of Term 1 a planning day was conducted that allowed the SRC to look at different fundraising options and work on activities for them. They decid-ed upon a number of events, creating proposals for the Executive team to approve. The SRC is hoping to use the funds they have raised throughout 2019 to create a space for students that will complement the new buildings and learning spaces at the Wade site.

Our 2019 Wade Site SRC Team members are:Year 12: Hrithik Kumar, Maddison Ramponi, Anna Robinson, Talesha Garbuio, Lucy Murphy, Rav-andeep Singh, Georgia HillYear 11: Mehak Kaur, Alyce WoodwardYear 10: Alexandra Kelly, Lavinia Magoci, Arisra NetphornYear 9: Cooper Angel, Rilee McPhersonYear 8: Amelie Borella, Philippa ElwinYear 7: Abby Butcher, Kaeli Chapman, Kiara Hirst, Lilli-Anne Phillpot

Year 7 Jindabyne ExcursionThe Year 7 cohort recently went on their excursion to Jindabyne and had a blast!

Students embarked on the long bus ride to Jindabyne on Tuesday in Week 1 and stayed for 4 activity packed days. Students got to experience different activities including mountain bike riding, archery, rock climbing, high ropes and a Kosciuszko hike!

On the first day we all got up at the crack of dawn to catch the bus at the “airplane on the stick”. At 2pm we finally arrived after a long bus drive and got straight into activities. Students also got to have a “games night” that night, before a well-earned rest.

Day 2 saw everyone get into more activities and a Trivia night, well done to the girls team for the overall win!

Day 3 was unfortunately not as planned, due to high winds and rain we weren’t able to go right to the top of Kosciuszko, however we were still able to get onto the ski lift and have a lovely 4km hike along Dead Horse Gap!

Day 4 was another morning filled with activities and then it was time to hop back onto the bus for the drive home.

A big thank you to all students who came and behaved so well, they were commended by the camp staff as one of the best groups they’ve had in a while!

A huge thanks to all staff; Ms Innes, Ms Laidler, Mr Fuller, Mr Forrest, Ms Vickers, Mrs Burton, Ms Wylie, who came and gave up their time as well!

Year 10 Report - Wade SiteIt has been a busy time for Year 10 with numerous Career and Industry tour opportunities be-ginning to present themselves for our students.

It has been great to see a number of Year 10 students taking on the chance to complete their White Card course and completing

various forms of work experience and participating in these real life experiences which expose them to options available when and if they choose to leave school. It has been expressed to our Year group that it is important that students are behaving during class time and in the playground

by following the MRHS PBL expectations at all times to fully take advantage of the out of school opportunities provided to them.

Year 10 Report - Griffith SiteWhoa down Cowboys and Cowgirls – the school year is flying along already. Year 10 are to be con-gratulated on ‘getting used to change’ due to the school merger taking place.

One of the major changes for Year 10 this year is the concept of Learning Coaches. The purpose of the Learning Coach time period is to provide time for our students to reflect on their learning and their life. It allows staff members to assist their Year Ad-visors in identifying positive reinforcements to be given and to assist with any student welfare matters as well. Each day of the week has a different focus, which allows the teachers to get to know their stu-dents better and assist them with their learning and life choices. The focus for each day is as follows:

•Mon – Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL) whole school activity•Tues – Whole School Assembly or Year Meetings•Wed – Year Priority – ‘Money Matters’ Booklets•Thurs – Completing any homework, assessments or quiet reading time•Fri – A basic Life Skill lesson i.e. How to Iron clothes, how to do a tax return, how to be involved in outside community organisations etc

Year 10 have already had a number of students achieve success this year in all areas of school life including; volunteering for the Breakfast Club, participating in ANZAC commemorations, various sporting school and representative team selections, debating/public speaking and learning just to do ‘a good deed for the day’ for someone else.

A special mention to Mark Tiuru who has gained various selections in Southern Inland and Brumbies Rugby Union. When Mark was questioned on the effort he was putting into the training, his reply was

‘I would like to make my family proud’. This type of attitude is something that we are trying to instil in all our students as a form of resilience where ‘Giv-ing Up’ is NOT an option.

On that note, students are reminded to get them-selves organised for the various subject assessment tasks and Half Yearly Examinations that are coming up. Being organised in your studies and with your teachers will assist in greater knowledge and skill development and application to the requirements of each task. This is a skill that each individual needs to improve upon.

Work Experience is set for Week 6 this term – 3rd-6th June, 2019. Students need to collect and return their forms to Ms Ragusa ASAP – cut-off date for final forms is Friday 17th May.

We look forward to continuing to guide Year 10 through their daily hurdles in life, which is not al-ways about school. We are here to assist everyone in their development and our door is always open for any question both minor and/or complex.

Being positive in gaining PBL tickets will only in-fluence your decisions with:

Being Respectful - Displaying Responsibility - Gaining Resilience, to become a Better Learner.

In closing, please feel free to contact either of us with any matter you may have on 69 621 711 or via the school email: [email protected]

Kind Regards

Ms Joann Sanderson & Mr Carl ChirgwinYear 10 Advisors - Griffith Site
