Term 1 Week 8 19 March 2018

Thank you to all families who supported the Easter Mufti Day last week. There are 11 baskets full of Easter goodies including soft toys, craft activities, books and of course a mountain of chocolate. We even had a local resident (Denny Campbell) who donated some impressive hand -made crochet puppies. I am sure our children would be thrilled to win one of these! The P&C and the school are very grateful for your generosity. The P&C this week will be looking for volunteers to assist with wrapping these goodies for the P&C raffle which will be drawn at the Easter Hat Parade on Thursday, 29 March.

Staffing Update We welcome Carol White to our wonderful team. Carol will operate across a variety of classes as a School Learning Support Officer (also known as a teachers aide) for the remainder of Term 1 with the possibility of extension. Welcome Carol!

Gardening A big thank you to Terry Johnston (Harley C’s grandfather) who put some love into our ANZAC memorial garden located at our flag pole. Any one is welcome to donate some time working in our vast gardens subject to a Working With Children check. Thanks Terry!

Student Portal All students can access their Department of Education Student Portal from home. The Portal is the gateway to learning tools and other online resources provided by the Department. The student portal interface is differentiated across three age groups being K-2, 3-6 and 7-12. Each portal interface guides students easily to relevant key features to facilitate online learning. These include:

- School email - School Library - Search - Calendar - My Links - blogged - Learning - Games

Another benefit of the portal is that resources such as Microsoft 365 (including Microsoft Word) can be accessed and downloaded at no cost on a personal device at home. Using the 3-6 interface you can access this by following these steps:

1. http://www.dec.nsw.gov.au 2. Click on Login and scroll to student (located on top

right of screen) 3. Agree with the ‘Conditions of Use’ 4. Once on the Student Portal you will see headings

down the right hand side of the screen. Click on the heading ‘Learning’

5. Click on the heading ‘More…..’ 6. From here you will see an option available

‘Microsoft Office 365’ click on this 7. A prompt may pop up saying remember sign in.

Choose the option ‘yes or no’ 8. From here you should be on the Office 365 landing

page. In the right hand side of the screen click ‘Install Office Apps’ and follow the prompts

As I mentioned this resource is one of many. G Suite (Google Apps for Education) is a similar resource. All of the sites offered are secure and safe for students.

Rugby League Trials Last Wednesday Lachlan S, Sinbad H and Cooper H competed in the combined Wallarah Rugby League Trials. According to parents all boys participated to the best of their ability and showed great sportsmanship. They should be very proud of their efforts. Special mention to Cooper H who will now go on to compete in the next round. Good luck Cooper!

Year 6 to 7 Transition Forms A reminder the Year 6 to Year 7 Transition to High School Enrolment Forms is now overdue. Please return this form as soon as possible. Your cooperation on this matter is greatly appreciated.

P&C Meeting P&C will be meeting this Wednesday, 21 March at 7:00pm in the OOSH building. All parents are welcome to attend! Look forward to seeing you there!

Cyber Safety Children and teenagers are going online and using social media with increasing frequency. While many enjoy their online experiences, there are risks involved. Parents, schools and the broader community need to work together to help keep children’s online experiences safe.

From the Principal

Page 3: Term 1 Week 8 - tuggerawon-p.schools.nsw.gov.au

The Commonwealth Office of the Children’s eSafety Commissioner has developed a resource for parents – iPARENT – which helps parents deal with the connected devices in their children’s lives.

iPARENT – found at https://esafety.gov.au/education-resources/iparent provides facts and statistics about Australian children online, managing technology in the home and strategies that can be used by parents to keep children safe online.

A parent’s guide to online safety can be downloaded from this site. A range of other useful information is also available from the website. For example parents can access information about cyberbullying including:

- how to talk to your child about cyberbullying; - what to do if your child is being cyber bullied or is

engaging in cyberbullying behaviour themselves; and

- sources of professional support and help.

The website also provides information about how parents and children can report unwanted online contact and/or inappropriate, offensive or illegal content online.

Finally, if someone you know is adversely affected by an online experience, free and confidential advice, assistance and support is available from:

- the Kids Helpline (ages 5 to 25) on 1800 55 1800; - eheadspace (ages 12 to 25) on 1800 650 890;

and/or - Lifeline on 13 11 14.

Of course if you need urgent assistance ring 000.

ASSEMBLY AWARDS – Term 1 Week 7

Page 4: Term 1 Week 8 - tuggerawon-p.schools.nsw.gov.au

In narrative writing, we are doing fictional writing, some people are writing Halloween and scary stories too.

In maths, we are doing algorithms to learn to add larger numbers together. We tried different strategies to add numbers together and taught each other to make sure we understood them.

This week we used counters to form arrays. Arrays help us to solve multiplication problems by making groups of numbers. We worked in groups to create arrays and find four multiplication facts about them. We then took photos of these, wrote on them and sent them to our parents using the Seesaw app. It was fun!

Our favourite thing that we are doing is art. In art we are learning about warm and cool colours. Warm colours include red, yellow and orange. Cool colours include purple, blue and green. At the moment, we are working on an artwork where we need to write words that describe us or list our favourite things. Then we will paint over them in different warm and cool colours.

In technology, we are almost finished our slide show presentations about ourselves. We are learning to insert images and animations. We will be presenting them at the end of the term.

We are loving learning in 2/3F Stage 2 3D Wow! Week 8 already!

We’ve had an excellent fortnight with a lots of activities happening.

We enjoyed our Mufti Day on Wednesday and students enjoyed giving Easter Egg donations for the P&C Easter

raffle. Thanks to all for your wonderful donations! Last Friday our class was able to participate with some juniors from The Mariners who taught us some soccer skills and played mini games of soccer with us. A huge THANK YOU to the Central Coast Mariners for this school program!

Last week Literacy groups ran extremely well and I am so pleased to see progress in student’s reading. Please keep up the great efforts with Home Reading kids – your hard work is paying off! Please remember to register on See Saw if you haven’t already done so. It is a great way for you to see what’s happening in the classroom and for us to be able to celebrate your child’s learning with you!

In Maths we have been collecting data and putting it in to the appropriate graphs. We looked at column, bar, pie and picture graphs last week.

Please keep the camp payments coming in. We are looking forward to a great camp – more information to come next term!

If you have any questions please do not hesitate to come and see me.

Have a fantabulous fortnight!

Mrs Kate Day Assistant Principal 4C Week 7 is over already, hasn’t this term flown by so quickly!

4C have had an excellent week with numerous exciting things happening both inside and outside of the classroom.

We enjoyed our Mufti Day on Wednesday whilst still demonstrating the three core values. Thank you to those families who brought in donations for the P&C raffle. On Friday we had a wonderful visit from 2 members of the Mariners who taught us some soccer skills.

Last week we started to look at persuasive texts and the structure used. We will be moving on to look at the specific language needed and forming our own persuasive piece of writing. 4C has some very persuasive students.

In Maths we have been collecting data and putting it into the appropriate graphs. We have looked at column, pie and picture graphs. After creating our graphs we interpreted the information and wrote our own questions for our peers to answer.

Well done to Cooper, Noah, Nick and Alex who swam at the Wallarah Zone Swimming Carnival. All of these students swam well with Alex coming 3rd in freestyle and the junior boys coming 3rd in the relay. A big congratulations to Alex who has made it to regional swimming for 50m freestyle. Alex will compete on 29,March in Sydney. Good luck Alex!

I am looking forward to an exciting and busy remainder of the term.

If you have any questions please do not hesitate to come and see me,

Miss Caban. Stage 2/3 4/5N Another busy 2 weeks have passed in our very productive classroom! This fortnight we have been settling into the routine of literacy groups, with students working independently through a contract of activities while I work with small, rotating groups on intensive reading and writing

Page 5: Term 1 Week 8 - tuggerawon-p.schools.nsw.gov.au

tasks. It has been very pleasing to see, read and hear quality work happening during this literacy time.

In Maths, students have been continuing to develop multiplication and division skills. Maths is always a fun and energising activity in our classroom as students undertake hands on activities to consolidate learning.

On Wednesday afternoons 4/5N participate in the Stage 3 CAPA groups. The groups include Drama, Visual Art, Music and Dance. Students spend 4 weeks on each unit before moving on to the next one.

Thank you for the wonderful donations of Easter Eggs from our Mufti Day last week. These will be used for our Easter Raffle prizes. The raffle books went home with youngest students a couple of weeks ago so don’t forget to sell and return them if you can! Our Easter Hat Parade is happening on Thursday, 29 March at 9.15 and all parents, families and friends are welcome to attend. I can’t wait to see all the amazing creations!

Students have been busy working on making their narrative writing interesting. I have been encouraging them to start their writing with action or a moment of change rather than with one day or once upon a time. I like to call these Sizzling Starts. It takes a bit of practise to master but I think we are doing a great job so far as the following examples show.

Have a great fortnight Mrs Megan New

Sizzling Starts from 4/5N

“This could have been the most awesome discovery of my life, one minute I was swimming out of the rip, the next I was struggling on the sail rope of a nineteenth century pirate ship” - Darcy

“The gates swung open. I stepped in. All I could see was red, glowing eyes. The gates slammed behind me. I let out a screech” - Olivia

“I was getting hot. I didn’t know why. Then I saw orange. I looked back. Fire! What should I do?” - Caitlin

“I couldn’t reach the handle. It started raining. Suddenly out of the storm came a horrific sight”- Sinbad

“The bus stopped. I jumped out, I had a bad feeling about this camping trip. The site looked old and haunted. My friend turned to me and asked “Why are you shaking?” – Mia

“I couldn’t hold my breath for much longer, but I was determined to finish the task. My friends thought I wouldn’t do it, but look at me!” – Lucy Stage 3 5/6C This past fortnight we have been working hard on understanding how division and multiplication function together. Each time we leave the classroom we recite an inverse operation to consolidate our learning of the relationship between them.

Last week we made slime with Mrs Houison which encouraged us to identify how we can change solids, liquids and gases to what we need them to be. E.g. we can change water (liquid) to ice (solid) to steam (gas). Does gas take up space? Ask your child for the answer and the experiment they conducted to gather their results!

We are excited that our payment plans for Canberra have come out! The first payment was due on 14 March. Keep an eye out for the second! In 5/6C we have had some serious discussion about how we need to start monitoring our behaviour NOW, so that we can bring our best selves on our excursion. Please encourage your child to bring their ‘A game’ every day to school. Our big one is COMMON SENSE. If it doesn’t feel right, probably best to steer clear of it and make a different choice!

The BFG is such a fun text. Ask your child what ‘scrumdiddlyumptious’ means! We have been learning to talk like a giant! Particularly the BFG giant. Incorporated into our Literacy circles this term is, ‘The Story of Us’. It is the story of Australia, it’s past, and it’s present. Each time we watch part of the episode, the students are so engaged and invested into learning what comes next and how Australia has been made into what it is today. Exciting stuff!

Thank you for helping or encouraging your child to complete their homework or even partially complete it, it makes a difference in class! Having that extra consolidation at home brings an extra level of understanding in class. A massive high five! Students will also receive in class DOJO’s for completion. Our highest DOJO award winner at the end of the week will receive GROOVY glasses to wear for the day and a mini block of chocolate… :D

Thanks again, have a great Easter long weekend and stay safe.

Ms. Coafield 5/6M We are already in Week 8! When you are busy the time flies.

One of the big ticket items for this week is Harmony Day, where students are encouraged to wear orange and participate in activities designed to bring an international feel to Tuggerawong. It is also a chance for the Year 6 students to do some fundraising for their farewell. This year, the school will be providing all of the components for the ‘Spider Stall’, but the students will still be able to be involved in the selling and serving.

On Thursday we will be missing a few of our Year 6 students as they attend the Wadalba CS tests for academic placement in 2019.

There will be a visit from the Wadalba CS 2019 Year 7 Advisor on Wednesday in Week 9. There is sure to be many questions asked by our Year 6 students about the adventure ahead that starts next year.

I would like to wish the representatives from our class to the Sydney North Swimming Carnival which will be held on Easter Thursday at Homebush. We have: Bodie, Carlos, James and Cooper all competing at the carnival.

The class is continuing to develop interesting ideas that we adopt into our learning. The Star Trek universe was the theme of our anti-bullying campaign in Week 7. We created posters where the theme was the absence of bullying for the past 300 years.

Students are reminded to bring in a USB to retrieve their homework from the student’s drive on the computer network. Homework can be returned on USB, to benefit the environment by saving on the use of paper.

Page 6: Term 1 Week 8 - tuggerawon-p.schools.nsw.gov.au

I hope that everybody has a great Easter and that all of that chocolate energises the students for their last 2 weeks of Term1.

Brian McNally

Please join in our Harmony Day celebrations this week by wearing orange and bringing a picnic lunch to share with your child/ren. Then join us for our Harmony Day activities from 12.00pm onward. Date: Wednesday 21 Match Time: 11.00am

To coincide with Harmony Day Year 6 will be holding a “Lemonade Spider Stall” to help raise funds toward their Farewell at the end of the year. The spiders will consist of lemonade and icecream. When: Wednesday March 21 2018 Time: First half of lunch Cost: $2.00 each

Back by popular demand! This year we will be having our Egg Decorating Competition again at our Easter Hat Parade!

All students from K-6 have the opportunity to decorate a boiled egg and have it displayed at our parade. This is an optional activity.

Each student who enters will go in the draw to win a delicious Easter prize. All you need to do is decorate a hard boiled or blown egg and bring it in on the day to be in the draw!

Be as creative as you like. Last year we had some exceptionally creative designs. Boiled eggs could be dyed, coloured, decorated to look like a chicken, bunny, bird, person etc. Your imagination is your only limit and we are really excited about seeing what Tuggerawong PS students create. Below are some images for ideas of how to decorate a boiled egg.

There are many great websites that will help you come up with ideas. A great website I found to get you started is https://www.brit.co/40-easter-eggs/

Thanks Mrs New
