The Amateur Chamber Music Retreat is for string players and pianists (and other

instrumentalists) who love to play, want a chance to work on their chamber mu-

sic skills, and enjoy the company of new and old musical friends. Instruction is

tailored to individual and ensemble needs.

No professional experience is required or expected. Preference is given to pre-

formed groups in the application process, but we attempt to accept all applicants.

Listening skills

Rehearsal and practice techniques

Intonation

Rhythm

Musical interpretation

Garth Newel Music Center sits in the

heart of Virginia’s Allegheny Mountains, a retreat destination since the 18th

Century. With comfortable guest rooms, gourmet cuisine, and a tranquil country

setting, Garth Newel offers visitors a unique opportunity to experience chamber

music of the highest caliber.

Among the most active chamber music organizations in the United States, Garth

Newel presents over 50 concerts each year by the Garth Newel Piano Quartet

and guest artists. In addition to the Amateur Chamber Music Retreat, Garth

Newel provides educational opportunities within the community, a yearly summer

Emerging Artist Fellowship program, and string lessons to area youth.

Four days of music & friends

in the beautiful Allegheny Mountains!

Activities

Participants should arrive by 6 p.m. on Thursday, March 22

for orientation, a short faculty concert, and dinner. Friday and

Saturday consist of chamber music rehearsals, coachings,

seminars, and informal chamber music reading sessions.

Sunday morning includes final rehearsals in preparation for

the participants’ concert, followed by a farewell lunch.

Application

Fee: $320 which includes all chamber music coachings,

seminars, performances, meals and snacks.

Lodging:

Manor House rooms are $110 + tax per night

Green Room Apartment rooms are $85 + tax per night

Giles Cottage rooms are $85 + tax per night

There are also local Inns, Motels and B&Bs available.
