Extensive planting – more than a protective eco-layer
In line with the general trend towards eco-building, the extensive planting system has now been established for some time. However, it is much more than a simple protective eco-layer or a necessary balancing measure.
Extensiveplantingsystemsstorewater,binddust,barelyheatupatall,evenatextremetemperatures,andthereforebringaboutasustainableimprovementinthemicro-climateontheroof.Theycreateapositiveimage,improvethequalityoflifeandalsocontributetotheincreasedappreciationofthebuildingvalue.
Floraandfaunahappilypopulatenewhabitatsandtheroofitselfenjoysalongerlife,becauseitiseffectivelyprotectedagainstenvironmentalinflu-ences.Thereisalsotheaddedbonusofareductioninthe‘raintax’inareaswheretheyhavesplitthewastewaterdrainagecharge.
Moreandmoredevelopersarebeco-mingconvincedofthesebenefitsandareinvestingingreenrooflandscapes.Thecostsforthisinvestmentaretrans-parent,becausethin-layerconstruc-tionswithacorrespondinglowweightperunitareaandnatural-lookingvege-tationthatmanageswithoutartificialirrigationmakeextensiveplantingacost-effective,low-maintenanceformofroofplanting.

Extensive planting to suit individual requirements
The multi-layer construction, made up of a filter, drainage and vegetation layer, offers the best conditions for maintaining long-lasting, high quality extensive planting schemes.
Thedemandsmadeontheextensi-veplantingsystemconstructionvaryaccordingtotheroofsituationandtheplantingobjective.Theentireband-width,fromparticularlyeconomicalconstructionstoverysophisticatedplantingsystems,canbeachievedwiththeBaudersystemoptions.Specialsolutions,likeplantingroofswithoutanyfall,forexample,ordrainagepassingunderneathplantingandcoveringareasrequiringgreatercapacitytowithstandpressure,canbecreatedeasilyandreliablywithBauder.
Thecriteriaforchoosingtherightsystemaredescribedonthefollowingpage.Thebriefdescriptionsprovideadecision-makingaidforselectingthebestsystemsolutionbasedonthedemandsmadeonthedrainagelayer.TheBauderplantcompostR-Ehaspro-vedparticularlysuccessfulinaccom-modatingthevegetationlayer.However,alltheotherBauderextensivevegeta-tionsubstratescan,ofcourse,alsobeusedformulti-layerconstructions.

Bauder SDF mat – the budget drainage system
Ifnoparticulardemandsaremadeonthedrainagelayer,theSDFmatcanbeusedfortheconstruc-tion.TheSDFmatallowstheprotective,drainageandfilterlayertobeinstalledinasingleoperationandisthereforecorrespondinglycheaper.TheconstructionwiththeSDFmatisourstandardconstructionforextensiveplantingusingamulti-layersystem.Becauseofitspermeabledrainage,itcanalsobeusedwithareversedroof(seepage7).
Criteria for selecting the system
Ifdrainagepassesunderplantingorterraceslabs,theBauderdrainageandstorageelementN20needstobeinstalledinsteadoftheSDFmat.Thiselementisessentiallyabletowithstandgreaterpressureandisalsosuitableasdrainageundermarginalpavingslabssetinamortarbed(seepage8).

Insteadofplasticsheetelements,coarsemineralparticlescanalsotakeoverthedrainagefunction(seepage12).
ThehighstoragecapacityoftheBauderwaterstoragepaneloffersthebestgrowingconditionsforthevegetation.Thethicknessofthepanel–�0mm–alsoallowstheplantingofroofswithoutanyfall.Anywaterthataccumulatesisdisplacedbythepanel(seepage10).

Lightroofconstructionsarenotonlyprevalentinindustrialandcommercialbuildingsthesedays.Theseroofcon-structionsonlyhavesmallloadmarginsasarule.Withawater-saturatedweightofmorethan100kg/m2,itisoftennolongerpossibletousethestandardsystemconstructions.ThesystemconstructionwiththeBauderwaterstoragepanelhasbeenspeciallydevelopedforthisapplication.Thehighstoragecapacityofthewaterstoragepanelallowsaninstallationthicknessofthevegetationlayerthatisreducedto�cm.Togetherwithalow-weightvegetationsubstrate–BauderplantcompostPO-E–theweightperunitareaofthetotalcon-structionisjust��kg/m2inthewater-saturatedstate.

With extensive planting over a wide area, a multi-layer construction is, as a rule, too complicated.
Themono-layerconstructionhaspro-vedsuccessfulhereasareasonablecompromiseintermsofcostandresult.Themono-layerconstructionallowslargeareastobeplantedinashorttimeandatlowcost.Withthisextremelysimpletypeofconstruction,ahomoge-nouslayeroftheBaudermineralplantsubstratetakesoverthefunctionsofdrainage,filterandvegetationlayer.Themono-layerconstructionmakesparticularlyhighdemandsonthequalityofthevegetationsubstratesused.Allthreefunctions–drainage,filteringandplantgrowth–takeplaceinasinglelayer.Hardlyanyothermanufacturerhaspaidasmuchattentiontotheseparticularfeaturesofthemono-layerconstructionasBauder.TheBaudermono-layersubstratesincorporatetheexperienceofmanyyearsofsuccessfulmono-layerplanting.

TheBaudersprayplantingmethodusesspecialmachinestomakealiquidmix-tureofvariousadditives,sedumshootsand/orseeds,whichisthensprayedontothevegetationsubstratemechanical-lyinasingleoperation.ThismakestheBaudersprayplantingmethodthemostefficientwayfortheextensiveplantingoflargeroofareas.Twotypesofsprayplantingsystemsareavailable–thehydrosowingofpuresedumshootsorcombinedwithwildflowersandwildherbseeds.
Standardassortmentsareavailablefordifferentlocations(sun,shade,semi-shade).Shrubswitha�–�cmdiametershouldbeplantedattherateof12/m2.
Planting with Bauder low-growing shrubs
Net green < 150 m2
Sprayplantingisnoteconomicalforplantingareasoflessthan1�0m2.Thebestmethodforplantingsmallareasistoplantlow-growingshrubs.Theshrubsaremainlynurturedandstress-conditio-nedinamineralsubstrate.
Bauder follow-up care – only in conjunction with hydro sowing
Extensiveplantingislowmaintenance–butnotmaintenance-free.Togua-ranteesuccessfulplanting,follow-upcareisessential.
Follow-upcaremeasuresinclude:
nre-sowingbarepatcheswithseedorsedumshoots
ncontrollednutrientfeedasrequirednremovalofweeds.
Inadditiontothisvegetationcare,thefollow-upcarealsoincludescheckingandcleaningtheroofdrains.
Thefollow-upcareendswhenaccep-tancestatusisreached–usuallyafter12–18months.
Withoutafollow-upcareorder,weonlyguaranteeourprofessionalsprayplan-tingworkandtheuseofproblem-freeadditives.
Themainacceptancecriteriaare:
ntheremustbeauniformplantstockwithaprojectivecoverofatleast�0%.Thecoverdoesnotincludeasexualandextraneousvegetation,whichmustnotexceed20%.
nBeforeacceptance,thevegetationshouldhavesurvivedarestperiodandalsoadroughtorfrostperiodifpossible.

Bauder development and maintenance care
Attheendofthefollow-upcareperiod,acareandmaintenanceagreementshouldbesigned,atleastforthedura-tionoftheguarantee.Aspartofthedevelopmentandmaintenancecare,theroofareaswillbecheckedduringonetotwoinspectionvisitsayearand,ifnecessary,thefollow-upcaremeasu-reswillbecontinued,but,asarule,lessintensely.
Thepermanentfunctionoftheroofplantingcanonlybeguaranteedbyacontinuingdevelopmentandmainte-nancecarecontract.
Installation thicknesses
Theinstallationthicknessesspecifiedfortheindividualconstructionsarebasedontherequirementsrelatingtosedum/grass/herbvegetation.
Ifonlysedumisplanted,theinstallati-onthicknessesofthevegetationlayercanbereducedbyapprox.2cm,sothatinthecaseoftheconstructionwiththeBauderSDFmat,a�cm(ratherthan8cm)layerofplantcom-postR-Eissufficient.
Inthecaseofamono-layerconstruc-tionwithsedumplanting,theinstalla-tionthicknesscanbereducedcorre-spondinglyto8cm.Anyfurtherreduc-tionintheinstallationthicknessplacesthepermanentfunctionguaranteeoftheroofplantingatrisk.
Pleasealsoseeourinformationbrochu-resonintensiveandsteeproofplanting.
