Hunting Regulations – Sept. 1, 2008 – Aug. 31, 2009

PERMITS: Permits for the Nov. 15 youth deer hunt, the Nov. 22 and Dec. 12-13 gun deer hunts, will be issued from the two checking stations during the dates of the hunts. Season map permits for other gun deer hunts, primitive weapons deer hunts, and for small game, archery deer, and turkey may be obtained by writing Area Biologist, 37 County Road 243, Scottsboro, Alabama 35768, (256) 587-3114, or the Wildlife and Freshwater Fisheries Office, 4101 AL Hwy 21 North, Jacksonville, AL 36265(enclose self-addressed stamped #10 envelope and current hunting license number). Map permits will also be available at most local license agents. The checking stations are located on Jackson Co. Rd. 55 one and one-half miles north of Co. Rd. 42, and on County Road 243, ½ mile north of Hwy 79 intersection. Trapping permits must be obtained from the Area Biologist. Checking stations will be open from 5:00 a.m. until 5:30 p.m. on dates of Nov. 15, Nov. 22, and Dec. 12-13. Any harvested deer or turkey must be checked in at check stations. Self service forms are provided when the check station is closed. Note: The gun deer hunts on Nov. 28-30, Dec. 27-31, Jan. 9-10, Jan 16-17 and Jan. 22-24, and the primitive weapons hunts on Dec. 18-21, this map shall be your permit to hunt on the WMA and must be in your possession. You do not check in or out at check stations unless you harvest a deer. The check stations will be open only on the Youth hunt Nov. 15 and Gun Deer hunts on Nov. 22 and Dec. 12-13. On each of the buck only gun deer hunts, those hunters less than the age of 16 years and female hunters may harvest either-sex deer (except spotted fawns). One deer per day. NOTE: All youth hunts: Youth must be less than 16 years in age. Supervisor must be either youth’s parent or 25 years of age or older and must be properly licensed. HUNTING DATES: DEER: (Youth) Stalk Hunting Hunters’ Choice (except spotted fawns): Nov. 15.Two deer per day. (Only one of which may be an antlered buck). (Gun) Stalk Hunting Antlered Bucks Only: Nov. 22*; Nov. 28-30; Dec. 12*-13*; Dec. 27-31, Jan. 9-10, Jan.16-17 and Jan. 22-24, one deer per day, except on Nov. 22* and Dec. 12*-13* only, a predetermined percentage of the permits issued will be “hunters choice” permits (either sex permitted except spotted fawns with a bag limit of two deer per day. (Only one of which may be an antlered buck). (Archery) Stalk Hunting Hunters’ Choice (except spotted fawns): Oct. 15-Jan. 31 (except on days of youth and gun deer hunts). Two deer per day. (only one of which may be an antlered buck). Hunter must obtain permit on either-sex gun hunts. No hunting on youth deer hunt, Antlered bucks only on buck only gun deer hunts. (Primitive Weapons) Stalk Hunting Hunters’ Choice (except spotted fawns): Dec. 18-21. Two deer per day. (Only one of which may be an antlered buck). TURKEY: (Youth) Mar. 14 (Daylight until 1:00 P.M. CST). (Physically Disabled) Mar. 15 (Daylight until 1:00 P.M. CST). (Regular) Mar.16 – Apr. 30 (Daylight until 1:00 CST). DOVE: State Season; (Wednesdays and Saturdays only). 12:00 noon until sunset (except on days of youth, gun, and primitive weapons deer hunts). SQUIRREL: Oct. 1-Feb. 28 (except on days of youth, gun, and primitive weapons deer hunts). RABBIT: Jan. 7-Feb. 28 (except on days of gun deer hunts). RACCOON, OPOSSUM & FOX: Oct. 1—Feb. 28 (Fox hunting - dogs only - no weapons). WOODCOCK & SNIPE: State Season (except on days of gun deer hunts). WATERFOWL: State Season (except on days of gun and primitive weapons deer hunts). TRAPPING: Nov. 16-Feb. 20. QUAIL: Nov. 16-Jan. 11 (except on days of gun, and primitive weapons deer hunts). BAG LIMITS: Deer - Bucks only hunts – 1 deer per day - with bare antlers visible above natural hairline – no spotted fawn; Hunter’s Choice and Primitive Weapons Hunts (two a day – only one of which may be an antlered buck, no spotted fawns). Turkey (Gobblers only) - 1 a day; 5 per season; Squirrel - 8 a day; Snipe – 8 a day; Rabbit - 8 a day; Raccoon - 5 per person per day; Opossum - No Limit; Fox – None; Quail – 12 a day, Woodcock – 3 a day; Dove – 15 a day; Waterfowl – state bag limit. Archery – either sex (except spotted fawns) – Two deer per day, only one of which may be an antlered buck. Falconry: Falconry will be legal on all scheduled area hunts for legally permitted falconers (must possess state and management area hunting licenses and management area permit). Falconers must adhere to bag limits and hunting season dates as listed above for resident and migratory game birds and animals (except no more than 3 migratory birds per day). PERMITTED FIREARMS & ARCHERY EQUIPMENT: Deer: Stalk Hunts: Centerfire rifles that have been plugged or otherwise incapable of holding more than 11 cartridges and using mushrooming and/or expanding type ammunition or shotguns using slugs only or muzzle loading rifles .40 caliber or larger, or centerfire handguns with a minimum 4 inch barrel length using mushrooming and/or expanding type ammunition. All applicable laws regarding possessing and carrying handguns must be followed. Primitive Weapons: Using only muzzle loading rifles, muzzle loading shotguns, or archery. Rifles to be .40 caliber or larger; shotguns to use pumpkin balls only. Firearms must be incapable of holding more than one charge per barrel. Turkey: Shotguns using No. 2 shot or smaller and bow and arrow (no crossbows). Quail: Shotguns using No.4 shot or smaller. Woodcock, Snipe & Dove: Shotguns using No. 2 shot or smaller. Squirrel & Rabbit: Shotguns using No. 4 shot or smaller, .22 caliber or smaller rimfire firearms, and muzzle loading rifles .40 caliber or smaller, or rifles operated by air. Waterfowl: Shotguns 10 ga. or smaller using T size steel shot or smaller or with other U. S. Fish & Wildlife Service approved shot & sizes. Raccoon & Opossum: State Law and Regulations apply. Fox: No weapons allowed. On all scheduled hunts except fox hunting, archery will be legal. Broadhead points will be legal only during scheduled deer and turkey hunts. Archery equipment must conform with State Regulations on specification. WHEN ARCHERY HUNTING, IT SHALL BE UNLAWFUL FOR ANY PERSON TO CARRY OR POSSESS ANY FIREARMS. Trapping: Standard .22 caliber rimfire firearms only during daylight hours only. All trappers must conform with all State laws and regulations pertaining to trapping. IT SHALL BE UNLAWFUL: 1. To hunt, trap, use dogs, possess firearms, ammunition, traps or archery equipment without a valid permit. A permit is valid only during scheduled management and refuge area seasons

during legal hunting hours and only with weapons and ammunition permitted for hunting the wildlife listed on permit. 2. To use dogs for stalk hunting of deer or for turkey hunting. 3. To use dogs for hunting, training or any purpose from March 1 to the opening of the following fall gun season. 4. For any person under 16 years of age to hunt on the management area unless accompanied by a licensed hunter at all times. 5. For any person to carry firearms in or on vehicle with ammunition in the magazine, breech or clip attached to firearms, or black powder weapons with primer, cap or flash powder in place. 6. To camp in the management area except in designated sites. Individuals or groups may camp on the management area for a period not to exceed nine (9) days in any 30 day period.

Campfires must be extinguished before departing. No warming fires shall be permitted away from camping area. 7. To kill or willfully molest any species of wildlife except those designated for hunting. However, this regulation shall not apply to feral swine or coyote which may be killed during all

scheduled management area hunts, during daylight hours only, when possessing a valid permit and using weapons and ammunition that are legal for such designated hunts. 8. To kill or willfully molest bobcat and fox. However, bobcat and fox may be killed during all scheduled area hunts that occur during the dates of the gun deer and turkey seasons for the

county or counties in which the area is located, when possessing a valid permit and using weapons and ammunition that are legal for such designated hunts, during daylight hours only. One (1) fox per day may be harvested only during these scheduled area hunts.

9. To discharge fireworks at any time. 10. To discharge firearms for target practice except on the designated target range. 11. To hunt or discharge firearms within 150 yards of any camping area, dwelling, dam or timber operation, or within 100 yards of any paved public road, highway, or within a posted safety

zone, or within one-half mile of a church on Sunday. 12. To use fire to smoke out game. 13. For any person to possess any firearms while hunting with bow and arrow. 14. To transport deer killed during the youth, gun and primitive weapons hunts from the management area before being examined or recorded at the checking station for scientific data. 15. For any person except authorized personnel to operate any motor driven vehicle behind, under or around any locked gate, barricaded road or sign which prohibits vehicular traffic. 16. For any unauthorized person at any time to operate a motor scooter, motorcycle, trail bike, or any motor driven vehicle on the management area except on regularly used roads open for

public use by four wheel vehicle traffic. 17. For any person to hunt deer on days of scheduled gun , flintlock, or primitive weapons hunts without wearing a vest containing a minimum 144 square inches of hunter orange color, or

either a full size hunter orange hat or cap. The hunter orange must be of solid color, except for a small logo on the front of the cap, and visible from any angle. 18. For any person except authorized personnel to block or otherwise stop traffic on any road by parking a vehicle in such a way that passage around the vehicle is impossible. 19. To deposit, distribute or scatter grain, salt, litter, or any other materials on management area prior to receiving approval from the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources. 20. For any person to damage or remove any trees, crops or other plants, dirt, gravel or sod from management area without legal authorization. 21. To erect or use a permanent stand or scaffold on management area without written permission from the landowners. 22. To hunt from an elevated stand or platform without attaching themselves to the tree or platform with a safety harness, rope, or strap capable of supporting their weight. 23. For any unauthorized person to ride or possess horses except in areas, on roads open to vehicular traffic, and trails designated as open to horses. NOTE: Administrators of the hunt shall have the right to distribute the hunters and to inspect all vehicles or other equipment while on the areas. The Department of Conservation and Natural Resources and landowners who are making the hunting possible, hereby put each hunter on notice that he hunts at his own risk and the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources and such landowners shall not be responsible for any accidents or injuries that may occur. THIS MANAGEMENT AREA WAS ESTABLISHED BY THE ALABAMA WILDLIFE AND FRESHWATER FISHERIES DIVISION IN COOPERATION WITH ALABAMA POWER COMPANY, FOREVER WILD LAND TRUST, AND OTHER SMALL LANDOWNERS. A hunting license( or Wildlife Heritage License for small game, except waterfowl) management area license (when hunting deer, turkey, or waterfowl) and management area map permit are required when hunting on management area.
