It is with tremendous pride and tribute to the courage and

strength of our members that The Ironworker features the rebuilding of the World Trade Center. Upon completion, Freedom Tower, with the antenna spire reaching 1,776 feet, will become the tallest build-ing in the United States. But its symbolism stands even taller; send-ing a strong message to the world that America always comes back—bigger, better and stronger.

Ten years ago, the devastating attack of 9/11 killed over 3,000 peo-ple and changed the world as we knew it. As the buildings pancaked down and thousands fled, ironwork-

ers rushed in to join our police and firefighter breth-ren in responding to the tragedy. As hours turned into days, into weeks and months, they

stayed on site without thought of pay or personal risks, fueled by the hope of possible survivors, and fi-nally the recovery of victims with dignity and respect.

Today, our members are enabling Freedom Tower to rise from the ashes. They work in reverence to those lives lost and with the tena-cious glint in their eye that every bolt struck; every rod tied; every piece of shimmering glass placed is an iron fist striking back at the cowards of September 11th.

Freedom Tower and the Memo-rial stand as a monument to those fallen and the strong will of our nation to fight back whenever and wherever threatened.

Thousands of building trades-men have joined with the city, Port Authority, developers and contrac-tors to stand as a beacon to the world, signifying freedom always wins. And as usual, the Iron Work-ers are leading the way. During a visit to the site, it was obvious every ironworker is proud of be-ing part of the project, but equal to their pride is their commitment to safety, which permeates the job. Their message—no more blood will be shed on this hallow ground. Once again, the Iron Workers lead the way.

Our brothers and sisters in New York on 9/11 and those there today are no different than each of us across North America. When the call goes out, union ironworkers answer the bell. Every project we build is important, and adds to the strength of our nations. Just as Freedom Tower rises from the destruction of the Twin Towers, we will REBUILD our economies, the labor movement, and our future. And the Iron Work-ers will lead the way.

Thank you for helping to build our great union.

“Freedom Tower and the Memorial stand as a monument to those fallen and the strong will of our nation to fight back whenever and wherever threatened.”

Union ironworkers first built the World Trade Center in the 1960s, then many heroic ironworkers worked tirelessly on September 11, 2011 to

rescue innocent Americans and remove mountains of twisted steel during the clean-up efforts, and now dedicated ironworkers are working to rebuild this historic project, Freedom Tower. Freedom Tower will be the tallest building in the United States, as well as sev-eral other towers, two reflecting pools, and a memorial to those who lost their lives.

I can tell you that I will never forget that horrific day, as will tens of millions of other people especially the Iron Workers. The Iron Workers raced to the Trade Center not away from it to save lives and help the injured. For ten months from that day the clean up was complete and done ahead of time and below budget. Thanks to every ironworker who helped in so many ways.I am so proud of what the Iron Workers did for those ten months and the rebuilding of Ground Zero, which is going on now with more than 1000 ironworkers working there, especially those men and women who served in our Armed Forces. We could never get enough praise for what we did then and now. I know that there were so many lives lost that day, and families who lost loved ones and friends. Those scars will never go away. Nothing can replace them, but we can always keep them in our hearts and prayers forever. God bless them and I am so proud of being an American and an ironworker.

Just as the mythological phoenix of ancient Egypt rises from the ashes, so does lower Manhattan as we now witness the rebirth of the World Trade Center. From the fire and destruction of 9/11/01, a new city within a city, arises amid a symphony of construction sounds and a choreography of union ironworkers professionally plying their trade. It will forever stand as a testimony to the strong will, fortitude, and resilience of the American people.

September 2011 Dear Brothers and Sisters:

Over the past three years, we’ve seen how interconnected we are. When

people are unemployed and more families are financially unstable, the impact

is felt throughout the community and even throughout the region as money

tightens up everywhere. Those who depend on human services often will have

our own brothers and sisters amongst their ranks. For more than six decades, the AFL-CIO and the Iron Workers have taken

great pride in its partnership with the United Way. Even in times of economic

distress, our people have joined forces with others to advance the common

good and to enable people with opportunities to have full lives. As a result, we

are making great strides in reaching our shared goals to improve education,

health and financial stability, the building blocks for a good quality of life.

Whether or not I know a child on the other side of town, it matters to me

whether the child grows up to be a contributing member of the community. We

all have a stake in that and a responsibility to do our part. Please join me in

supporting the 2011 United Way campaign. By doing so, you are helping cre-

ate opportunities for a good life for all.Give. Advocate. Volunteer. That’s what it means to LIVE UNITED.

Fraternally yours,

Walter W. WiseGeneral President

The wage guide is published twice yearly and is not intended to be definitive. Recent collective bargaining agreements may not be reflected in this data due to our press deadline. Moreover, rates for U.S. locals do not necessarily reflect wage determinations published biweekly by the U.S. Department of Labor at www.WDOL.gov. This compilation reflects

wages by region, allowing for extra detail. For the most current data, please directly contact the local union using the listings in this issue.
