After all, the Ninth Commandment focuses on the necessity for the truth in all personal courtroom testimony. And yet, though our Judaism teaches the ultimate importance of truth telling, it allows for clear occasions when a white lie or even a blatant lie is appropriate. In his wonderful work, The Book of Jewish Values, Rabbi Joseph Telushkin cites a Talmudic debate between the schools of Rabbi Hillel and Shammai as to what words ought to be sung by the guests at a wedding when dancing before the bride. Hillel’s adherents instruct the dancers to always chant, “What a beautiful and gracious bride!” The House of Shammai disagrees, insisting that there is no such standard praise but rather describe each bride “as she is”. Hillel’s argument is the accepted one, as Jewish law recognizes optimistically, that every bride is beautiful in the eyes of her groom. In other words, as Emily Dickinson advised: “Tell all the truth but tell it slant.” But, here is yet another word on truth. Clancy Martin is a philosophy professor and the author of the intriguing book, Love and Lies. In a recent (February 8, 2015) Sunday New York Times article, Professor Martin Opined: Relationships last only if we don’t always say exactly what we’re thinking.Martin went on to explain: We all tell lies, and tell them shockingly often…And we lie particularly often when it comes to love. If you want to have love in your life, you’d better be prepared to tell some lies and to believe some lies. If honesty is what matters most to you, you might as well embrace a life of silence and become a Trappist monk. When it comes to love, both honesty and deception should be practiced in moderation. The good professor offers us a provocative take on love and one’s prospects as a successful lover and spouse. Let me just quote Dr. Martin’s concluding paragraph for your personal consideration. I do so without disclosing my own judgment, either pro or con on his argument but, regardless of one’s agreement or disagreement, he ends with a wonderful nod to the Bard. Love is a greater good than the truth. No marriage, no parent’s love of a child should be scrutinized like a pathologist examining his cadaver. Save your ruthless pursuit of the truth for the laboratory; we lovers would rather be like Shakespeare: “Therefore I lie with her and she with me / And in our faults by lies we flatter’d be.” Don’t worry so much about ferreting out the truth. Take care of each other instead. So tell me, do you think Rabbi Hillel would endorse Professor Martin’s position on truth telling in love? Even more importantly, do you? I offer the above as grist for the mill, dear ones, as another spring arrives! Faithfully Yours, Rabbi Edward Paul Cohn

Be on the lookout!

Our JewCCY Board frequently talks about how to make new members comfortable at events. We try our best to welcome everyone with open arms to show just how great JewCCY can be. This is actually something fairly easy we are tasked with on a local level. There is ease in wel-coming 5-10 new members to one of our awesome events. What about on a larger scale? When JewCCY members travel to NFTY Southern events there is an expectation that our members, new and old will be warmly welcomed by the leadership. This warmth and sense of hospitality is what keeps JewCCY members returning to NFTY Southern events.

I had the pleasure over Mardi Gras weekend to attend the NFTY Convention in Atlanta, Georgia. Three of our teens made the decision to attend convention, and from the thoughts we shared, it was well worth the experience. It was humbling to witness our teens from New Orleans and all over the deep south interacting with teens from New York to LA (although later proclaiming what we all know - it is a LOT more original to be aJewfromtheSouth!).Whenourregionmetasagroup, ourfourteenNFTYSOteensreflectedonthechallengesofbeinganewcomerfroma

regionwithasmallerpresence.Theteensreflectedonmeetingthechallengeofmakingnewfriendsinsuchalargecommunity(over1,000NFTYparticipants),andhow they would love to bring that same hospitality back to their local youth groups and to future NFTY Southern events. Regional Advisor, Becci Jacobs shared her thoughts, “our teens who attended convention gained a new sense of pride about what it means to be a Jewish teen, and the importance of creating a Southern presence at North American events”. If you are reading this article, and have not made the decision to attend a JewCCY or NFTY Southern event, give it a try. While there are lots of extra curricular activities to be involved in, there are few where one will feel as welcome or proud of their identity than NFTY. Tenyearsago, whenIattendedmyfirstNFTYConvention,IamnotsurehowIwouldhaveansweredthequestion‘wheredoyouseeyourselfintenyears?’ but I am so happy it was spent at NFTY Convention. Seeing the important ways our Jewish youth movement is progressing, expanding our reach, and em-poweringteenstobecomeleadersintheircommunitiesandbeyondwassomethingIampleasedtoonceagainhaveexperiencedfirsthand. Give JewCCY and NFTY a chance, as we look towards creating a presence at NFTY Convention 2017 that will be loud, proud and present.

By Catherine Cahn Kahn

My Jewish Journey will end right here, where it began, at Temple Sinai. My great grandfather Leon Cahn left Gates of Mercy to come to the brand new Reform Temple, where he sang in the newly formed choir. His son Edgar was secretary of Sinai, and recruited Max Heller to be its Rabbi. My parents were

marriedhere,oneofthefirstweddingsinthenewtemplein1928,Myfather,LeonSolisCahn,servedaspresidentduringthewaryears,andledmyconfir-mationclassdowntheaisle.IsufferedthroughSundaySchoolandconfirmationclassanddidn’tlearnmuchmorethantheShema.IcametoserviceswhenIshould,enough that I can recite most of the prayers in the old Union Prayer Book by heart, (and often do when I don’t like the new translations.) Freddy and I were marriedinthissanctuary,andforcedourkidstostayinSundaySchooluntilconfirmation.IwastheyouthgroupadvisorwithRabbiBlum.Itwaslikegoingthrough the motions.

But then I had a revelation. A new rabbi (Rabbi Edward Paul Cohn) came to Temple Sinai, one who inspired me, and opened windows and doors for me. I began to draw strength from faith, I began to come to Temple, dragging Freddy with me because he loved me, because I found I could let go of all that had happened during the week in the service. I can tell you the exact moment: when Cantor Colman sings, “Spread over me the shelter of your wings”, I heave a sigh of relief. My recent visit to Israel with Temple Sinai gave me a new perspective on our relationship with Israel. It was a long journey of a girl who grew up in a household and a congregation that belonged to the American Council for Judaism.

But the biggest challenge has been the changes to Reform Judaism itself. I love the language and dignity of Classic Reform. I won’t pretend I don’t. AndIlovethemusic:ourorganplayedbyMarcusSt.Julien,ourchoir,weareworldclass.TheguitarmightbefinearoundthecampfireatHenryJacobs,butlet’sleave it there.
