President Obama to Address Largest Contingent of Reform Jews On December 16th I will be in Washington along with Grace and several Board of Trustee members for the Biennial Convention for the Reform Movement. In the past the average attendance of this conference is somewhere between 4,000 and 5,000 Reform Jews from North America and from around the world. This is the conference when new initiatives are rolled out for Reform Congregations. This year, a new teen initiative will be presented. The goal of the initiative is to creatively build programs that will engage our youth and help them strengthen their Jewish identity so when they leave home, they will be secure in knowing who they are as Jewish youth.

Workshops are given on all facets of congregational life, where best practices are presented and people exchange ideas and thoughts on how to do things better. Jewish entertainers perform at night to large enthusiastic audiences. Imagine being in a room filled with thousands of Jewish leaders for Services. It is an unbelievably uplifting experience. This year, Rabbi Rick Jacobs, the incoming president of the Union for Reform Judaism will be introduced and there is a tribute to Rabbi Eric Yoffie, the outgoing president of our Movement. The Reform Jewish Think Tank will be running a program to illicit input from congregational leaders on the future of our Movement. It is an exciting conference and I

am looking forward to being a part of it. It was just announced that President Obama will join our conference during the day on Friday to address us. It is quite an honor to have the President of the United States speak at our convention. On Sunday, November 20th, North Country Reform Temple is hosting the annual Interfaith North Shore Clergy sponsored Thanksgiving Service. The Service begins at 7:00 pm and we hope that you will join us in welcoming members of the North Shore faith communities to our spiritual home. The Service is short and is followed by an oneg. It is really important to me that we have a good turnout so please mark your calendars! We have many events coming up in November and December. For Hanukkah, on Friday December 23rd, we will have a Synaplex Shabbat. Services will be at 6:00 and will be followed by dinner and Hanukkah activities. Please make your reservations. Take time out during your Thanksgiving celebration to recognize the things that you are grateful for as Americans and Jews. Share these thoughts with your family members and get them to share what they are grateful for at the dinner table. This can lead to wonderful discussions and consciousness raising. As we approach Hanukkah, please be mindful of those in need. Teach your children the value of giving tsedakah by having them buy a gift for the needy. We are collecting toys for the needy for the winter holidays and we are collecting turkeys for Thanksgiving for the I.N.N. Please drop off your extra turkeys and do a mitzvah. May all of the winter holidays bring light into your homes and your hearts. Rabbi Dr. Janet B. Liss

Shiru L'Adonai, Sing unto G-d, and sing they did! I want to take this opportunity to thank the members of the NCRT volunteer choir for their beautiful enhancement of our holiday

services. They all work so hard, and their dedication to our temple and choir is amazing. Without their beautiful voices, our services would not sound so great. Also, I would like to especially thank Dr. Hosun Lee Moon for her dedication to our synagogue. She works hard in preparing the music, as well as preparing the choir. We are so blessed to have her share her talents as a teacher and pianist with us.

For all my seventh grade parents: Please remind your children to practice their prayers regularly. We have a prayer test approximately once every other week, and it is imperative that the students pass the test, as well as feel confident and comfortable with their prayers. So far, we have one test with a 100% pass rate, which made me a very proud teacher. Please help them to keep up the good work! Wishing you all a warm and wonderful fall. L'Shalom, Student Cantor Faryn Kates

Partners in Caring

Under the auspices of Partners in Caring, a UJA funded program bringing together FEGS Long Island (the region’s Jewish human

services agency) and synagogues, we are fortunate to have a social worker on staff at North Country Reform Temple. Hillary

Lagnado, LCSW, will continue to be on our staff on a part-time basis.

Hillary will be working with our caring committee to supplement their vast array of activities, with our Hebrew school and any group

in the congregation that is interested in her services. Hillary will be available to lead or coordinate workshops on such topics as

parenting, women’s health issues, school bullying, stress management, among many others. She will also be available to facilitate

support groups on bereavement, divorce, as well as short-term individual and family counseling. For more information, please

contact Rabbi Liss at 671-4760, or Hillary Lagnado, 499-7550 ext. 267.

Hebrew School We are having another great year in our Hebrew School.

We are blessed with a dedicated staff and have a great

student body. For the High Holy Days, each class took a

different holiday symbol and learned about its meaning and then made a life size art

project out of them. Their beautiful artwork is hanging in our school.

Our Confirmation Class led us in our Children’s Services for Rosh Hashana and Yom

Kippur. Our students made decorations which they hung in the Sukkah and we

celebrated the holiday inside it together. A special thank you to everyone who helped

put the Sukkah up and those who took it down. The last weekend of the month, the

8th and 9th grade class led our first Family Service and on December 30th we had our

first of 2 Tallit workshops. Twelve 6th graders began making their tallitot and many of

our 7th graders finished theirs.

In November, please make note that there is no school on Sunday the 13th as our staff is participating in a staff development day put on by the Long Island Temple Educators group. On November 18th, our 7th graders have their Shabbat dinner and Service. Please read your emails for your class updates and information about special programs in our school. If you would like to be involved in our school, please contact me at 671-4760. I hope you and your family has a great Thanksgiving and a Happy Hanukkah. Shalom, Rabbi Liss

Women of Reform Judaism Do you know that our Temple has an AMAZING group of women? They are dedicated, determined, hard-working, and all together – wonderful! It has been my pleasure to get to know some of you and as your WRJ Sisterhood president I look forward to getting to know ALL of you. For those of you that I have not have not had the privilege of getting to know yet, my name is Alissa Woska. I have a wonderful family, including 2 children that attend the Hebrew school. We came to NCRT roughly 3 years ago and have been welcomed into the temple family as if we were always here. The caring that we have been shown is part of what I love about our congregation and it is part of the reason that I am pleased and honored to have the opportunity to help revitalize our Sisterhood in the spirit of Tikkun Olam. Tikkun Olam embodies the Jewish imperative to improve the world. We can do this in many ways. It includes the quest for social justice, equality, and peace. But it also recognizes that every act of kindness, no matter how small, helps to build and repair our world. It is in this spirit that we have made plans for our upcoming year for our Temple Sisterhood. Our theme for this year is one of strengthening ourselves, our congregation, and our community. Events that we have planned are designed for us to come together and support each other. Some of the activities have a social action slant, but it is vital for us to come together as women as well. Individually we may already have many roles – wife, mother, child, grandmother, sister, provider, teacher, friend. The role of sisterhood, of being there to support each other and knowing that we will never be alone, is a vital role as well. Our belated October meeting was fantastic. My incredibly hard-working board members were introduced. We supported our religious school by helping with cooking and serving at the Flapjack Fundraiser, followed by a tangible feeling of excitement over plans for the coming year. On Saturday, December 3, we will be having a family Bingo night and dinner in the social hall and I hope to see you all there. The next morning, we are going to be part of the Temple’s Holiday Boutique where we will be selling Disney items and it will be the Grand Re-Opening of our Judaica Store! I encourage all of you to come check out our sisterhood if you have not already done so. We have monthly meetings the first Sunday of every month and additional activities during the month. If you have any questions or suggestions for us, please feel free to contact me. I look forward to getting to know all of you better over the year and helping to make our Sisterhood a strong and vital force in our congregation.

William Kunstler: Disturbing The Universe Civil rights attorney William Kunstler was one of the most famous and controversial lawyers of the 20th century. He represented civil rights activists, as well as accused terrorists and murderers. His life is explored through rare archival footage, home movies and interviews with the leading ‘60’s activists. This powerful documentary revives the injustices of a generation that led Kunstler to become one of the most hated lawyers in America.

Yoo-Hoo Mrs. Goldberg From Aviva Kempner, maker of The Life and Times of Hank Greenberg, comes this humorous and eye-opening story of television pioneer Gertrude Berg. She was the creator, principal writer, and star of The Goldbergs, a popular radio show for 17 years, which became television’s very first character-driven domestic sitcom in 1949. Berg received the first Best Actress Emmy in history, and paved the way for women in the entertainment industry. It Includes interviews with Supreme Court Justice

Ruth Bader Ginsburg, actor Ed Asner, producers Norman Lear (All in the Family) and Gary David Goldberg (Family Ties), and NPR correspondent Susan Stamberg.

TEMPLE LIBRARY NEWS Any month is a good time to visit your Temple Library. Here we are in November and December already. Two of the best books to celebrate Thanksgiving are MOLLY’S PILGRIM and RIFKA’S THANKSGIVING. Barbara Cohen wrote MOLLY’S PILGRIM some time ago and it is even more timely now with the many immigrants experiencing our national holidays through the perspective of their native customs. The story is simply told of Molly whose Russian mother helps her fashion a clothespin “pilgrim” for a class project. Of course it looks like a Russian peasant and Molly is embarrassed when her classmates make fun of it. Her teacher encourages Molly to explain that the doll looks like Molly’s mother who came to America for religious freedom. She was a modern day pilgrim. RIFKA’S THANKSGIVING by Elsa Okon Rael grew out of a shared family memory of the author’s childhood. She was the Rifka in the story. This third grader convinced her parents and their all-important Rabbi that this uniquely American festival was truly a celebration for all Americans - Jew and non-Jew alike. Also in November - November 9 - is the anniversary of Kristallnacht. Much of the literature on this topic is contained within works about the Holocaust and there are many sources available. Your Temple Library has a most important first-hand account of the events of that terrible time. Susan Cort - an honored former congregant - donated a letter translated from the original German. It is from her father recounting his personal experiences on that wild and horrible night. He wonders why the USA is not taking a stand against these atrocities. It is a moving commentary wrung from the heart of a good upstanding citizen, a man who was fearful for his family and the world around him an eyewitness to history. For the Hanukkah celebration in December, children, especially, like to read and receive books. Come to your Temple Library to sample old favorites and new purchases. The young readers will enjoy the inquisitive Sammy Spider as he experiences his first Hanukkah in the household of Josh Shapiro. A surprise awaits Sammy - and the reader - on the last night. SAMMY SPIDER’S FIRST HANUKKAH by Sylvia Rouss. One of my personal favorites is JEREMY’S DREIDLE by Ellie Gellman. This is a special dreidle because Jeremy is making it for his father who is blind. He makes a Braille dreidle by molding tiny raised dots into a dreidle-shaped lump of clay. NORTHERN LIGHTS by Diana Cohen Conway is an unusual story about Sara who spends the first night of Hanukkah with a Yupik Eskimo family in a remote Alaskan village. They share traditions by the light of an old oil lamp and watch the splendor of the Northern Lights. There are many Hanukkah stories awaiting you. They range from the chunky board books for the youngest to chapter books for the abler reader to adult books. All are lavishly illustrated and well- written.

I look forward to seeing you in the library. Christine Ghent, Temple Librarian

PAMELA OTIS Daughter of Stephen and Patricia Otis, becomes a Bat Mitzvah on November 5, 2011. Pamela is an 8th grade student at North Shore Middle School. She is at the top of her class academically. Her favorite sport is horseback riding. She is an active member of the United States Equestrian Federation and the United States Hunter Jumper Association. She competes in horse shows throughout Long Island winning many ribbons in jumping and showing. For the past two summers, Pamela volunteered full time at a local barn where she helped teach children riding lessons and helped with the training and caretaking of the horses. Pamela is also an animal lover and has many animals at home. For her Mitzvah project, Pamela walked in the Making Strides for Breast Cancer Walk and raised $1,478.00. This cause is very close to her heart since she never had the opportunity to meet either of her grandmothers as a result of Breast Cancer. On her Bat Mitzvah day, Pamela will be wearing shades of pink in memory of her grandmothers and in honor of survivors.
