Title Hauoli Mau Loa Foundation

a.DescriptionHauoli Mau Loa Foundation received its full bequest from the benefactor, through an estate plan, in 2007. In early 2008, when the Foundation hired its first staff, the Foundation began a process of developing program and grantmaking strategies that are consistent with the broad vision of the Foundations benefactor.

The board and senior staff conducted a series of discussions with non-profit leaders in and outside Hawaii, including those who run agencies, work in academia, set policy or provide funding. A common message heardwas that the Foundation needs to focus its resources to have a greater impact. Combining what was learned from these discussionswith an internal assessment of the Foundations earlier work has resulted in the confirmation of five grantmaking strategies:Environment,First Generation Partners,Hope for Kids, Housing ProjectsandHumanitarian Relief.

Grantmaking Strategies:

Environment~ the Foundations mission includes promoting stewardship, preservation and protection of the natural environment. We are making grants in this field in both Hawaii and internationally.

Prairie Biotic Research Small Grant

a. Description The Prairie Biotic Research (PBR) group funds individuals with up to $1000 a year to support the study of any species in U.S. prairies and savannas. PBR is attempting to gather information that can slow the erosion and loss of biodiversity in the U.S. prairies and savannas. American Society of Primatologists (ASP) Conservationist Award

Description These awards and grants, funded from the ASP Conservation Fund, are a mechanism to recognize deserving students, including those from primate habitat countries - countries with native primate fauna.
