From the Principal Early HSC Success Earlier this term I was informed that Mathew Smith and Jacinta Talevski, two of our HSC Drama students had been nominated for their performances to be included in the Onstage program. Onstage is a season of exemplary Drama performances from the 2017 Higher School Certificate and will preview on Saturday 3 February 2018 and run from Monday 5 February to Friday 9 February 2018 at 1.30 pm and 7.30 pm in the York Theatre, Seymour Centre. Mathew’s performance has been included in the season and should serve to inspire all our Drama students when we see it performed again on the big stage.
I would like to congratulate the students for their nominations and also Ms Baylis, Ms Baulderstone and Mr Norrish for the excellent teaching and support that has led to these exemplary results. Mathew Jacinta
Ultimo Operational Division Principal Awards We are fortunate to have an excellent staff at Tempe High and this year I was pleased to acknowledge two of our members of staff with awards for their hard work and dedication. Wafa Taube, our Head Teacher English and Marianna Papasavva were recognised for the significant contributions they have made to the school . It was an honour to attend the awards ceremony and see our staff take their place amongst the many fine people that were also awarded at the Blackwattle Campus. Marianna Papasavva has served students and staff at Tempe High School for more than twenty years in her role as a School Administrative Officer. During this time she has displayed excellent interpersonal skills, an exemplary work ethic and a meticulous approach to all that she does. She has ensured that enrolments, International student documents, NESA records and invoicing are always up to date and accessible.
Marianna has a superb knowledge of departmental policies and procedures as well as a near photographic recollection of students and their families. Her well-developed communication skills and calm demeanour have helped the office remain relatively peaceful, despite the hectic and often chaotic requests that often come her way. Marianna's sense of a fair go and her high expectations are the embodiment of what is best in public education in NSW Wafa Taoube has been Head Teacher English at Tempe High School for only 3 years but has made an enormous difference both within her faculty and as a member of the executive team. Wafa has encouraged both students and her staff to seek the highest possible outcomes through persistence and hard work. She leads by example and as a result the school has achieve excellent results in Debating, Extension English and Value Adding in Literacy. Wafa has been the driving force behind both Gifted and Talented Education and Project Based Learning at Tempe High School. Wafa has outstanding communication skills with an infectiously positive disposition which she puts to good use encouraging colleagues to try new approaches. She is relentless in the pursuit of excellence and a fine role model for both staff and students.
Ms Papasavva Ms Taoube

CAPA FACULTY Visual Arts News! Year 10 Visual Arts students painted up a storm with a new unit of work: Vanitas–Memento Mori. Mr Kane Dawson bought a fresh new unit to the Visual Arts program; introducing students to oil painting and still life setup and photography. Students used items precious to themselves and some items precious to their teachers to stage a still life setting in the art studios. We used professional lighting, animal skulls, antiques and fresh fruits and vegetables combined with contemporary 21
st century items.
Year 10 were shown the stages of oil painting; following teacher examples and demonstrations. At times the painting process was frustrating, in particular the development of shadow and light within their compositions. All the students have created such beautiful, unique and intricate artworks; and we are super proud to display them at the entrance to the CAPA classrooms in C block. We could have easily filled the newsletter with all the painting, here are a select few. Ms L Rumble—Visual Arts Teacher

Budding Australian Writers @Tempe Incognito Galaxy Maybe I'm loved, Maybe I'm hated, Maybe I'm just another being that is rated
How can I describe myself - Without seeming vain? I'll compliment myself but just come across plain
One thing I do know Is that I'm alive, Constantly changing but keeping my drive
I have no name; this is not a tragedy. I am my own, Incognito Galaxy
by R. Jessop-Smith Year 9 Imaginative Response He lay on a hill, still sunken into the lush damp ground that in day would’ve shone a bright joyous green but now in darkness referenced the un-abating rain that had fallen on the dirt for centuries. The boy nestled in the fluttering grass that erratically swayed as the night time breeze swept across the landscape. Coolness seeped through his skin and ripped apart the flesh that bound his physical existence, leaving behind no more than an ethereal spirit gazing at the sky with deep contemplation. A surreal sensuality - brought on by the blissful silence and wondrous explosions of melancholic euphoria- put him into a trance like state. It felt as though the world itself caressed him with the same potency as a gentle touch that came from a loved one, and made the heart go limp. But he was alone, and in his isolation he was gifted peace and tranquillity. The landscape that flooded his vision was the apotheosis of all spectacles. The thunderous clouds that billowed and roared erupted into paroxysms of blinding lightning and ruthlessly washed the world away with downpour. But a gap in the sky had separated the doom with angelic elegance and shined light before him; a light that came not from the deathly glare of day but the disquieting calm of night. The moon stood against the dazzling stars that splashed the cosmos with glory. The sadness of pale blue beams that had travelled millions of years across the vacuum of space now reflected in his dilated pupils.

Inside the theatre:
Year 12 2018 sat down to watch a play about 1950s McCarthyism that would support their
understanding of the module they are studying in class
They were left with the following questions:
Can we really convict someone without proof?
Should those who are found ‘guilty’ condemn others who may be innocent?
Did this actually happen in a democracy?

Outside the theatre:
Gloria contemplates the play and takes in the
soothing landscape of Bondi Beach.
Her spirits are restored as is her faith in
humanity.
But there is always that niggling doubt: would I
be labelled a witch if I were in Salem at the
time? Or if I were in 1950s America at the time?
What does a witch-hunt look like today?
Seeing the best of the best left these debaters speechless
Thank you to Ms Yin for providing this

Year 9 Geography Fieldwork to Chipping Norton
On Thursday 31st August and Friday 1st September, Year 9 Geography went to Chipping Norton. There they learnt
about the impact of sand mining of the Georges Rivers, how it has been rehabilitated and managed since sand mining ceased. It is part of a comparison study for the topic ‘Environmental Management and Change’ in which they are also investigating the impact of sand mining and the ‘Sand Mafia’ in India. During the day students learnt how to construct a 3D map using natural objects and use this map to draw a sketch map. They compared sand samples from Georges River with Whitehaven Beach in QLD to learn how sand from the Georges River is considered the best sand in the world for concrete strength. The sand has even been used to build skyscrapers in Dubai! They participated in water testing of the Georges River and collected rubbish found on the beach and along the river bank. A big thanks for the teachers that attended the day and the staff at Georges River Environmental Education Centre for facilitating the activities. All the students attending participated enthusiastically.

CAPA FACULTY Band Tour to Mudgee—10 October to 13 October 2017 Day 1 Tempe High School Band had a bus trip to Mudgee. When we arrived at the caravan park we had a rest after the long journey then caught the bus to Cudgegong Valley Public School where we rehearsed pieces with Chatswood High School.
Day 2 waking up was painful because my cabin stayed up late. After breakfast we had something similar to school - a rehearsal for 6 hours with lunch and recess in between. The pieces we played consisted of ‘The Man From Snowy River’, ‘The Lion King’, ‘Stronger’ and many more. During the breaks we got to meet people from Chatswood High School. Throughout the rehearsal we helped juniors from Cudgegong Valley and Mudgee Public Schools play their instruments.
Day 3 we performed around 7 songs with a rehearsal beforehand. When we finished our performances we returned to our cabins, went in the pool and played cricket. That night we left for an unforgettable trip to Mudgee Observatory to see Saturn and Blue Stars close up in through telescopes. We could see the Milky Way just by looking up - it really was an unforgettable experience.
Day 4 we finished up with a performance at Mudgee High School. We said goodbye to Chatswood High School and headed home, stopping for lunch at a beautiful lookout over the mountain view.
