From the Principal

Teachers have been busy assessing and reporting on student achievement. Years 7, 11 and 12 will have received their reports and I was pleased by the number of Honour Roll citations. I urge all students to pay particular attention to the teachers’ comments and the Learning Profile ticks. If they are rated as “Always” or “often” in all these categories; they are approaching their personal best. If not then this should be addressed as they are under achieving. Students in years 8, 9 and 10 will be getting their reports in week 2 of next term with the parent teacher night on Tuesday 31st of July.

Our SRC and student leadership team have done an exceptional job this term framing an Anti-Sexual Harassment policy and driving our bottle recycling program. I am proud of these young leaders passion and the hard work they have put into these projects. The Anti-Sexual Harassment policy in particular has been a lighthouse policy that our SRC are involving many other schools’ student bodies in to ensure that our good work benefits other schools too.

Our building maintenance works are coming to an end and we now have refurbished roofing, air conditioning and the common room has been renovated to include a meetings room. We will continue to reinstate the senior boy’s toilets and other projects in second semester.

I will be on long service leave for the last week of term 2 and the first week and a half of term 3 and Ms M Fountoulis will be relieving Principal and Mr P Shaw will step up as Deputy for years 7, 9 and 11. I have included the calendar for the first 5 weeks of term 3 in this newsletter.

Subject selection for Year 9 and 11 2019 The subject selection process for year 9 and 11 (2019) will get underway early term 3. We will be running a subject selection evening on Wednesday August 15th to share information with parents. As we are also starting BYOD (Bring your own device) for year 9 and 11 in 2019 we will be combining subject selection with the BYOD information night. The evening will run as follows: 5-5.50pm Year 9 (2019) Subject Selection 6-6.45pm BYOD Information for both Year 9 &11 (2019) 6.50-7.50pm Year 11 (2019) Subject Selection Venue: Tempe High School Hall I look forward to seeing you all there, students are of course welcome as well. In addition to the subject selection night we will be holding information sessions at school for our current Year 8 and 10 students. During these sessions, Head Teachers and the Careers Adviser will clarify for students what is involved in studying the different subjects/electives. During these sessions students will receive a hard copy of the Subject Selection Booklet which is theirs to keep as a reference guide. Students will be required to complete their subject selections as follows: Year 8: Online selections can be made at https://spring.edval.education

Each Year 8 student will have a unique code sent to their Department of Education email. Students are to complete their selections online and hand in a parental/guardian signed copy to Ms Trotter in the front office. This website will open from 9am Thursday 16th August until 5pm Monday 20th August. Year 11: Students will be timetabled in to meet with Mr Fawcett (Careers Adviser) from Thursday 16

th August to complete their online

selections. Mr Fawcett is an excellent resource to help advise students when making these decisions. Students will be given a hard copy of their subjects to have signed by their parents/guardians and returned to Ms Trotter in the front office. We are aiming to have all Year 11 selections completed by Friday 24

th

August.

Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) Bring your own device is a system where students bring a computing device to school which they can connect to the Tempe High network. This enables them to access cloud based programs such as google classroom and Microsoft 365 in the classroom by logging in through their Education department portal. Year 9 and 11 will be expected to bring a computing device from the start of the school year 2019 with the rest of the school to follow in 2020. Tempe High is spending 2018 preparing for the implementation of BYOD. There is a draft policy on the website which I would encourage all guardians to read. The policy was presented to the P&C for comment and a discussion ensued. For the minutes of that meeting please take a look at the school website. Concerns included gaming and appropriate use of devices. These issues are in the process of being addressed and will be included in the policy. At this point in time Tempe High is looking at running digital citizenship in year 9 next year and from 2020 in year 7 and year 9. As well as this there will be a gaming addiction work shop run for year 9 this year with the view to make it a permanent part of our education programmes. Staff has been taking part in training with a number of sessions having been run on utilising devices as a learning tool in the classroom. There will also be a parent information session on BYOD for year 8 and year 10 parents and students on subject selection night. This is big change for all members of our school community, but inevitable. I would ask year 8 and 10 parents to attend subject selection evening session on BYOD as well as read the draft policy. August Job Interview Day is the culmination of term long unit of work delivered by the PDHPE faculty and the Careers Advisor. The unit of work involves career exploration, resume building and interview techniques. Students prepare a resume/job application and sit a mock interview in response to sample job advertisement. The mock interviews are conducted by local business volunteers, youth employment services and TAFE/university representatives for authenticity.

Information for Year 12

The UAC (Universities Admission Centre) website will become active in August, usually during the first week of the month. This website is used for your university applications, various scholarships and the EAS (Educational Access Scheme). A printed UAC GUIDE will be available early next term, Mr Fawcett will distribute to all Year 12 students once they arrive at school. CAPA would like to thank all of the teachers and students involved with the Expo. We would especially like to acknowledge the P&C who have supported the improvements to the schools performance space by providing new stage lighting, sound system and stage bunting. These valuable additions allow our students to perform in a space equipped at a professional standard, which encourages them to strive for their personal best and allows the audiences a more authentic experience for watching live performances.

Expo: On Wednesday 27

th June, the Creative and Performing Arts (CAPA) faculty were pleased to have the opportunity to

showcase the amazing talents of our year 9, 10 and 11 elective students. The aim of the expo was to allow year 8 students an opportunity to see and experience the projects and performances CAPA electives offer prior to making their own elective selections in term 3. Additionally, CAPA enjoys the chance for teachers and support staff to celebrate the efforts of our talented students. Visual Art: The newly refurbished staff common room provided an excellent new exhibition space for Visual Art students. Year 9 students displayed their Concertina Books and Appropriation Projects from term 1 & 2 respectively. Year 10 had their Vanitas Oil Paintings and a range of drawing skill exercises on show, and year 11 students displayed their large scale portraits.

PDHPE FACULTY (cont.) The Sydney East Table Tennis Tournament was held at Sydney Olympic Park Indoor Centre. The knock out competition format sees teams as far as Rosebay through to the Sutherland Shire compete in the one day carnival. Our four Tempe H.S. representatives included Naufal Haidar (Yr11), Victor Tran (Yr12), Artemis Papacosta (Yr11) and Fahim Chowdhury (Yr11). The Tempe Team were victorious within the early rounds and progressed to the Grand Final match to play Sydney Boys. Although highly competitive and scrapping for each point, alas our Tempe boys conceded defeat in the Grand Final match play, having to settle for Runners Up honours. All representatives deserve congratulations and should be very proud of their sublime performances and the spirit in which they played throughout the tournament.

MATCH Report - AFL Swan Shield Knockout Tuesday 12

th June

Jannali HS def Tempe HS by 3 goals Tempe played intelligent footy against Jannali who improved as the game went on. Our team was well led by Dash Hibberd, controlling the game with a level-head in the middle of the field. His efforts were backed up by some hard hitting defence from Jason Ripiloski and courageous tackles from Samuel Brewster. Unfortunately Tempe ran out of steam with no substitutes to rely on in the second half of the game. As always, the boys represented the school with a sense of pride and respect for their opponents. A special mention to Jack Griffiths-Saunders and Zachary Edwards for their many years of service to the school and for maintaining an AFL legacy.

PDHPE FACULTY Athletics Carnival—2018 The annual Tempe High School Athletics Carnival was held on Wednesday 30th of May at Hensley Athletic Field. There were some outstanding individual achievements with numerous records being broken on the day. Apollo were declared the champion house in a tight contest. A huge thank you to the Tempe High School Staff for making the day run so smoothly and a special mention to 8B student helpers who contributed to the running of the Tempe High School Athletics Carnival. On Friday the 22nd

June, the boys’ volleyball team played in the NSW Volleyball Schools Cup. The Schools cup had 75 teams entered to play volleyball on the day. We came second in our side of the draw after some amazing rallies and team play.

We entered the semi finals ready to give it our all. We played Chester Hill and had just reached one set all, when the buzzer sounded. We were disappointed to find that we had just missed out on the grand final based on for and against points.

Despite being disappointed in not getting to play the

grand final, the boys can be very proud of their effort.

Special mention to Alan Doan and Daniel Yang for

their outstanding ability to put pressure on the

opposing team, with their fantastic spiking.

Athletics Carnival (cont.)









NCCD 2018

All Australian schools are required to participate annually in the

nationally consistent collection of data (NCCD) on school students with

a disability. Under the NCCD model, teachers and school staff use

their professional, informed judgement, based on evidence, to

determine the level of adjustment students with disability receive at

school supporting them to access and participate in education on the

same basis as other students. During the process, we will be gathering

information on any accommodations or adjustments that the school

makes to improve educational outcomes for students. An example may

be giving a student longer time to complete class tasks or receiving

additional support from staff or support officers.
