Reader Tips

Authors develop informational texts using central ideas and supporting evidence. This information is organized to describe or to explain a topic or event. Determining the central ideas and supporting evidence is essential to retell, paraphrase, or summarize an informational text.

Retelling, paraphrasing, and summarizing are all ways to restate the meaning of a text. Although these skills each require slightly different approaches, they all require you to use your own words to restate the text. Achieving mastery of these skills will show that you fully comprehend what you have read.

Retelling a text should follow these guidelines.

1. Include the topic or event of the text

2. Include a restatement of the important ideas in the text

3. Maintain the same order as the ideas in the text

4. Be concise—should be much shorter than the original text

Paraphrasing a text should follow these guidelines.

1. Include the topic or event of the text

2. Include a restatement of the central ideas and key supporting evidence in the text

3. Maintain the same order as the ideas in the text

4. Be about the same length as the original text

Summarizing a text should follow these guidelines.

1. Include the topic or event of the text

2. Include a brief restatement of the central ideas of the text

3. Maintain the same order as the ideas in the text

4. Be concise—should be much shorter than the original text

Frigatebirds1 Seabirds, such as penguins and gulls, live in marine settings. One seabird is the frigatebird.

2 Frigatebirds are black in color. Male frigates have red throat patches. Females have white patches on their undersides. The wingspans of these birds can be up to 7.5 feet in length. The frigate has the largest wingspan in comparison to its body.

3 Frigatebirds cannot land on water. Their feathers are not waterproof, so they are unable to float upon the waves. This makes it necessary for frigates to find food in creative ways. They steal food from other seabirds. They also scoop up small fish that leap out of the water.

4 What makes frigatebirds most interesting is their flying. They can fly up to 12,000 feet. No other bird flies this high over the sea. Scientists recorded a frigate flying for two months without stopping. One tagged bird flew for over 40 miles without flapping its wings. Researchers discovered that frigatebirds fly into cumulus clouds. These clouds form where warm air rises from the ocean surface. Frigates make use of the updraft from these clouds to keep them aloft.

5 Because of their unique features, frigatebirds spend their lives flying over beautiful seas.

1 Which best retells what the text is about?

A Marine life

B Seabirds

C Frigatebirds

D Cumulus clouds

2 Which summarizes the central idea of the text?

F Frigates look beautiful in the sky.

G Frigates are interesting marine birds.

H Frigates are similar to penguins and gulls.

J Frigates can fly for two months without stopping.

3 Which paraphrases paragraph 3 of the text?

A Frigatebirds are different from other seabirds because they cannot float on water. As a result, they do not eat the same types of food as other seabirds.

B Frigatebirds have the largest wingspan of all seabirds. They cannot land on water. These special birds can fly higher than any bird.

C Frigatebirds have been studied by scientists because of their flying patterns. Most interesting is their ability to fly through cumulus clouds.

D Frigatebirds do not have waterproof wings so they cannot land on water. To eat, they steal food from other seabirds or catch fish that jump out of the water.

International Pillow Fight Day1 Put a few young children in a room, tell them to take a midday nap, and guess what might

result? A pillow fight!

2 These fluffy shenanigans have been happening ever since pillows were invented. With a pillow in hand, playfully bopping a friend over the head is too hard to resist.

3 But young children shouldn’t be the only ones having all the fun. People, young and old, enjoy pillow fighting. And each year on a designated day, everyone gets to do just that. Pillow fighting is encouraged throughout the world on International Pillow Fight Day.

4 The day is chosen by the International Pillow Fight organization and announced on the Web. Then, people around the world begin organizing their events and posting meeting places and times on social media. People in hundreds of cities participate, including New York City, London, Budapest, Chicago, Beirut, Shanghai, Sydney, and Vancouver. Events are hosted in public places like parks and downtown squares. Interested participants must provide their own pillows. They arrive at a scheduled event and wait until someone signals with a whistle or bell the start of the fight.

5 Swoosh, Splat, Smack! As pillows break in battle, feathers and cotton fly through the air like giant snowflakes. The ground becomes covered with delicate white stuffing. The pillow fighting continues until either the gatherers or the pillows wear out! Some fights last just a few minutes. In large gatherings, though, a pillow fight can last for several hours! A record was set in London in 2008 when 3,706 people gathered for one massive pillow fight.

6 International Pillow Fight Day is simply a day of fun. On this day, children show off their pillow fighting skills, and adults experience the feeling of being a kid again. At the end of the event, pillow fighters walk away with smiles.

International Day of Happiness

1 In 2012, the United Nations (U.N.) had an idea. The organization agreed that the world would be a better place if people took action to bring about happiness. The U.N. set aside one day a year as an International Day of Happiness. On this day, people throughout the world are encouraged to focus their attention on happiness.

2 How might they do that? One way is for people to do what makes them happy. A second way is to find specific things to do to make others happy. A third way is to tell everyone they know about this special happiness day. Happiness is contagious. When one person is happy, many more people can feel happy just by being around that person. The world is a better place when people choose to spread happiness rather than to spread anger or sadness.

3 March 20 is the day the U.N. selected for International Day of Happiness. On this day every year, individuals, organizations, and cities throughout the world become involved. They find creative ways to spread happiness. In Washington, D.C., one year, people gathered in a busy area of the city and gave free hugs to those who passed by. In Ontario, Canada, a technology company named Plasticity Labs made a large gratitude wall. People wrote what they were grateful for on bright-colored slips of paper and posted them on the wall. People in faraway places contributed by sending their messages to be posted on the wall too. And in 2014, Pharrell Williams encouraged people from around the world to make videos of themselves dancing to his song “Happy.” The contributions were combined to create the world’s first 24-hour music video!

4 On the International Day of Happiness, people can share happiness in small ways, like making someone laugh. Or they can find big ways to make the world a better place, like cleaning a park. The ways to be happy and make the world a better place are limitless on each International Day of Happiness—and every other day of the year.
