Getting'started'

Pair'and'connect'to'the'Tecla'Shield'

1. Connect!the!Tecla!Shield!to!a!power!source.!The!Tecla!Shield!has!two!power!ports!(use!only!one):!

a. Power!Port!1:!USB!Type!B!plug!@!5V;!or!!b. Power!Port!2:!AC!adaptor!with!2.1mm!centerI!positive!barrel!plug!!!!!!!!!

(6–12V).!2. Once!the!power!is!on,!the!status!light!inside!the!Tecla!Shield!will!start!blinking!

red.!3. Go!to!Settings!>!General!>!Bluetooth!

4. Make!sure!Bluetooth!is!ON.!!5. Under!the!Devices!section,!you!will!see!a!device!called!TShieldUno;iOS;xxxx,!tap!

VoiceOver!is!great!for!switch!users,!but!for!those!who!are!used!to!touching!the!screen!to!access!the!device,!the!VoiceOver!user!experience!may!be!a!bit!confusing.!Fortunately,!Apple!provides!a!convenient!shortcut!that!can!be!used!to!toggle!between!touch!mode!and!switchIaccess!mode!at!any!time.!This!shortcut!consists!on!clicking!the!Home!button!on!the!iOS!device!consecutively!three!times.!You!can!enable!the!tripleIclick!Home!shortcut!by!following!the!steps!below:!

The!Tecla!Shield!has!three!input!ports!available!for!connecting!standard!adapted!switches:!two!single!switch!1/8”!or!3.5mm!mono!ports!named!Switch!Port!1!(SPI1)!and!Switch!Port!2!(SPI2),!and!one!Environmental!Control!Unit!(ECU)!Port!providing!up!to!four!additional!switch!inputs!through!a!DSub!9Ipin!(also!known!as!DB9)!connector!compatible!with!the!directional!controls!available!on!standard!powered!wheelchair!ECUs.!

The!Tecla!Shield!uses!click!and!hold!switch!events!to!achieve!full!access!to!the!iPhone!and!iPad!with!as!little!as!a!single!button!switch.!The!table!below!presents!a!summary!of!functions!for!SPI1!and!SPI2.!!

SPI1!is!optimized!for!full!singleIswitch!access!to!the!your!iOS!device,!while!SPI2!is!optimized!for!singleIswitch!access!to!individual!apps!(e.g.,!AAC!apps).!Both!switches!can!be!used!simultaneously!for!faster!access.!!!!

The$scanning$speed$can$be$configured$with$a$range$of$scanning$delays$of$0.3$to$5$seconds.$Hold$times$range$from$0.7$to$2.5$seconds.$

Scan'Lock'Next!–!Starts!scanning!!next!items!automatically.!App'Switcher!–!Show!the!app!switcher!for!quick!access!to!recently!opened!apps.!

Customization'

The!autoIscan!speed!and!hold!times!can!be!customized!using!the!Programmer!accessory!included!with!the!Tecla!Shield.!To!adjust!these!parameters!perform!the!following!steps:!

1. With!the!Tecla!Shield!on!and!connected!(solid!green!light),!connect!the!Tecla!Shield!Programmer!to!the!ECU!port.!This!will!put!the!Tecla!Shield!in!configuration!mode.!

2. AutoIscanning!will!start!immediately,!scanning!5!times!in!each!direction.!3. Press!the!‘+’!button!for!faster!scanning!rates!and!shorter!hold!periods.!4. Press!the!‘–‘!button!for!slower!scanning!rates!and!longer!hold!periods.!5. While!in!configuration!mode,!you!can!connect!a!switch!to!SPI2!in!order!to!assess!

the!suitability!of!both!the!scanning!speed!and!holding!times!configured,!automatic!scanning!will!stop!/!restart!every!time!the!hold!period!has!been!reached.!
