The state of Andhra Pradesh is fast becoming the capital when it comes to local manufacturing of smartphones in India. Global manufacturing major, Foxconn has already started operations at Sri City and has partnered Xiaomi and Gionee to manufac-ture their handsets in India. Asus is also expected to come in next very soon and many other brands are likely to follow suit.

As a result, Andhra Pradesh is fast turning into a mobile manufacturing hub with Lava being the latest entrant with an investment of Rs 500 crore towards local manufacturing.

Besides Lava, the Sri Venkateswara Mobile and Electronics Manufacturing Hub at the industrial park at Renigunta near Tirupati — recently inau-gurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi — will boast of leading manufacturers like Micromax, Cel-kon and Karbonn. The three firms are expected to invest Rs 200 crore each to set up their factories.

In a big boost to cellular and electronics manu-facturing in India, Micromax, Karbonn and Celkon have signed up with the government of Andhra Pradesh to set up their manufacturing facilities near Tirupati in Chittoor district of the State. The move by these three cellular companies is also expected to spur the growth of electronics, supplier base and

related services. Together, these three companies are expected

to invest about Rs 750 crore with each unit being classified as a major industry attracting various rebates under the State policies and also conces-sions of VAT, registration and stamp duty.

The decision of these companies comes as a major boost after the global contract manufactur-ing major Foxconn set up a facility in Sri City multi-product economic zone close by for manufacture of mobile phones for Xiaomi, Asus, Oppo among others.

The site provides great locational advantage being close to Krishnapatnam and Chennai ports and Tirupati and Chennai airports. According to Government estimates, each of this unit could employ about 2000 people. The Industries Depart-ment is seeking to woo other manufacturing com-panies--Intex and Lava to the hub.

All these developments are creating a unique value proposition for the state of AP and set to fur-ther establish the state as a favorable smartphone manufacturing destination in India.

CeBIT India, world’s largest business IT and ICT event, organized by Hannover Milano Fairs India Pvt Ltd (HMFI), concluded its third day at the Bangalore International Exhibition Center. Discussions for the day centered on the digitization of the manufactur-ing sector and the development of the SME sector in the country. A special series of discussions were initiated on how CXOs can embrace and lead digital transformation.

The day’s keynote and panel discussion on Industry 4.0 – Manufacturing Goes Digital with pan-ellists Sujoy Bhramachari, Senior GM, Hero Moto-Corp, Pertish Mankotia, Head IT, Sheela Foam Pvt. Ltd. (Sleepwell), Prakash Dhamani, Global CIO, Essel Propack Limited, Kashyap Kompella, Research Direc-tor, Real Story Group and Dr. Nilay Yajnik, Profesor of Information Systems, NMIMS University.

India IT spending is forecast to reach $72.3 billion in 2016, a 7.2 percent increase from 2015, according to Gartner, Inc.

The IT industry is being driven by digital busi-ness, and an environment driven by a connected world. Gartner predicts spending on Internet of Things (IoT) hardware will exceed $2.5 million every minute in 2016. Mike Harris, group vice president at Gartner, explained today to an audience of more than 1,000 CIOs and IT leaders at the sold out Gart-ner Symposium/ITxpo, that interconnections, rela-tionships, and algorithms are defining the future of business.

“In five years, 1 million new devices will come online every hour. These interconnections are cre-ating billions of new relationships. These relation-ships are not driven solely by data, but algorithms,” said Partha Iyengar, distinguished analyst and head of research at Gartner India. “Data is inherently dumb. It doesn’t actually do anything unless you know how to use it; how to act with it. Algorithms are where the real value lies. Algorithms define action. Dynamic algorithms are the core of new cus-tomer interactions.”

The algorithmic economy will power the next great leap in machine-to-machine evolution in the Internet of Things. Products and services will be defined by the sophistication of their algorithms and services. Organizations will be valued, not just on their big data, but the algorithms that turn that data into actions, and ultimately impact customers.

“India will continue to be the fastest growing IT market for the second year in succession and will

Discussions centered around the impact of Industry 4.0 and how it can be best implemented in India. The panellists shared interesting use cases on the automation of the manufacturing sector. Sujoy Bhramachari, Senior GM, Hero MotoCorp, said “Automation is going to play an important role. When we take our own example. We create one cycle every 18 s. If you are not automated you are left behind.” The panellists felt that India needs to create their own approach to Industry 4.0 in order to work in the Indian context.

A separate panel discussion was organisated on the need for Industry-Academia collaboration for SMEs to support innovation and provide new opportunties. A greater level of collaboration can ensure that these organisations stay competetive.

CXOs and their Role in Digital TransformationA special panel discussion on Digital Transfor-

mation and The CXO Event was organised to under-stand the role CXOs need to play in order to ensure the digital transformation of organisations. Jessie Paul, Paul Writer Advisory said: “Each company has its own strategy when it comes to digital. There is no particular strategy for success in digital trans-formation. It also depends on the time when the strategy is implemented. The only companies that lose out are the ones that do not think about who the key people are that they want to reach out to

continue growing to total $87.67 billion by the end of 2019,” said Aman Munglani, research director at Gartner. “India is currently the third largest IT mar-ket in Asia/Pacific, and by 2019 India will become the second-largest IT market within the Asia/Pacific region, following China.”

Devices, which include mobile phones, PC’s and tablets, will account for almost 33 percent of the overall IT spend in India, and the devices seg-ment will grow 9.4 percent in 2016. Mobile phones will continue to be the single largest technology sub segment in India and the third fastest-growing through 2019.

“Data center systems will grow 3.9 percent in 2016, with most of this growth coming from enter-prise network equipment and servers that will grow at 5.9 percent and 5.3 percent, respectively. IT ser-vices, which accounts for 18.1 percent of overall IT spend in India, will be the fastest growing segment in India in 2016 with 13.8 percent growth year on year. Within these segments, business IT services will grow 15.2 percent over 2015 figures,” said Mr. Munglani.

Software, which accounts for nearly 7 percent of IT revenue in India, will grow 12.7 percent as a segment, but within this segment, enterprise appli-cation software will be the fastest growing sub segment in 2016, with revenue forecast to grow 16.2 percent over 2015. Communication services will continue to account for the largest share of IT spend in India and will account for 39.2 percent of revenue in 2016, however, this will also the slow-est growing segment with a 2.1 percent increase in revenue in 2016.

The driving force behind this IT spending growth is the emergence of digital business.

Digital BusinessDigital business is when new businesses

and to what extent.”CIOs are leading the digital transformation and

a panel discussion on the topic brought to fore key areas that CIOs need to focus upon in order to stay relevant in a digital world. Asserted Suresh A Shan, Head – Innovation & Future Technologies MMSL BITS (Business Information Technology Solutions, Mahindra & Mahindra Financial Services), “Digital transformation simply means business through ana-lytics. CIOs must leverage the power that data ana-lytics hold, and its relevance for effective business operations.”

Commenting on the the show, Mehul Lanvers-Shah, Managing Director, Hannover Milano Fairs India, said, “We have been successful in creating a digital marketplace at the show this year, in-line with the underlying theme of D!conomy. This year was a perfect amalgam of pertinent panel discus-sions and business conversations with industry leaders. With regard to visitor flow, we had good quality footfalls for the event, comprising of key decision makers and member of academia. We stay comitted towards encouraging the technology ecosystem in the country. We thank our exhibitors and partners for their support in making this year’s event a success. CeBIT India will continue to high-light pathbreaking technological transformations driving businesses across the globe.”

designed with both the physical and digital world are brought together. As analog revenue flatten, and decline for many industries, businesses are shifting to digital revenue from digital business. Global digi-tal commerce is now over $1 trillion, annually.

“Leading CEOs have told Gartner that their digi-tal revenue will increase by more than 80 percent by 2020. 125,000 large organizations are launching digital business initiatives now, “said Mr. Harris.

Bimodal BusinessFor digital business to succeed, companies are

creating innovation units. New digital initiatives are running alongside their traditional analog busi-nesses. The business itself is bimodal.

“Organizations are creating separate business units, focusing on digital, separate from their tradi-tional businesses (Mode 1),” said Mr. Iyengar. “They are trying new ways of reaching the customer, of running operations, of driving diverse innovation. They are acquiring and investing in digital technol-ogy companies, not waiting on existing suppliers to build capabilities because they have to start in a dif-ferent place.”

“Traditional organizations move too slowly when they build digital on old Mode 1 platforms. The solution is to create a type of bimodal organi-zation, introducing a new Mode 2 platform, with a different emphasis. The Mode 2 platform uses more cloud than in-house infrastructure and applications, “added Mr. Iyengar.

The new platform is less about data gathering, and more about intelligent algorithms to act on the data. Platforms matter because business as a whole has gone bimodal. You need IT that supports a bimodal business. Over a third of CIOs have gone bimodal just within IT, creating innovation units, running at Mode 2 to break out of the traditional, slow, but stable approach, which is Mode 1.

Feature phones still account for roughly 60% of the Indian market demand, par-ticularly in Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities and become primary reason for driving the new internet users dominated mostly from smaller or regional cities. While the feature phone market share is decreas-ing by 3-4 percentage points every quarter, the overall size is increasing, translating into a con-stant demand for feature phone models. In rural areas, where data connectivity is unreliable and phones are viewed as utilitarian devices, there remains potential in feature phones. We have assessed the vital aspects that connect with these markets and have incorporated security features, robust hardware, and multi-language support into our feature phone portfolio. We have posi-tioned our models price-sensitively and made them available across India through retail outlets and chains.

How do you try to be at the cutting edge amidst hundreds of other home-grown Indian brands? Our research and development are comprehen-sive in terms of quality high design along with providing better user interface interactivity from the rest.In fact, our flagship smartphone series, Eluga, stands for an ‘Elegant (el), User-Oriented (u) Gateway (ga)’.We keep the consumer in mind at every step of the design process, leading to smart features and application bundles unique to Panasonic smart-phones. Moreover, we aim to completely switch our portfolio to 4G-enabled smartphones with the advent of 4G telecommunications technology in India. What is your strategy around support? We consider customer support is an integral part of our business operations, prioritizing it even above sales. We believe in the power of word of mouth and the ripple effect that one happy con-sumer can have on winning ten more customers. In the interest of our customer satisfaction, we are expanding new service centers and announc-ing more customer friendly policies. As you must be well aware of Indian consumer psyche by now, what are the most common fea-tures that they aspire to have in their phones? The Indian consumer is perceptive and aware buyer. Well informed about the technology trends and available offerings in the market. There are certain key differentiators that custom-ers recognize in a product before making a pur-chase decision. Impressive screen displays, qual-ity cameras and powerful battery back ups are the key criteria assessed when buying a smart-phone. We predict that 4G support will become one of the most sought features in smartphones in the near future.
