KWI CORP. AG designs and manufactureswater and waste water treatment equipment and systems for most industrial and municipalapplications. It is considered one of thepioneers of dissolved air flotation (DAF)technology and is the oldest existing DAFequipment builder in the world.

Founded over 50 years ago by Dr MilosKrofta as Krofta Engineering Corporation,the company started by building watertreatment and fibre recovery installations forthe paper industry. With an extensiveinstalled base, in all continents, the namehas become almost synonymous with theindustry itself.

While the paper sector still forms a signifi-cant part of its business, in the last five decadesdecades KWI CORP. AG has developed anddeployed a considerable range of water clari-fication equipment and technologies across multiple industries and applications. The company

has gradually evolved over the years tomeet these growing markets. All plantsare manufactured in our partner'sworkshop's in Europe and the Americas,

and, more recently, an advanced R & D centre inSwitzerland and the Americas.

During the early 1990’s Krofta Engineeringchanged its name to Krofta Waters Inc.and recently a new organisation, KWI CORP. AG, was formed to incorporate the companies, the people, the assets and the people's intellectual property.The main headquater of KWI CORP. AG is located in Lugano.

Primary treatment ...

Primary treatment involves the physicalseparation of suspended and colloidalmaterial from a water or waste waterstream. In many cases it may alsoinvolve chemical coagulation andflocculation to enhance removalefficiencies. The combination of physical-chemical treatment incorporatingdissolved air flotation clarification is oneof KWI’s specialities.

This technology is currently used in foodprocessing plants and dairies, wherefats, oils and greases must be removed,in paper production effluent, in industrialeffluent treatment, and in municipaleffluent before biological treatment ...

The choice of both process andequipment will depend on theapplication. KWI has a large installationdatabase at its disposal and this, alongwith the possibility of running pilot plantsimulations, laboratory tests andanalysis, enables the best combinationof these to be implemented.

Biological treatment systems reducepolluting materials in waste waterstreams by utilising micro-organisms. Thiswell established technology is alsocapable of removing organicconstituents such as ammonium,phosphorous, etc.

Today’s regulatory pressures requireeffluent plants to perform better than everbefore. Many industries havetraditionally relied on primary treatmentprocesses only for their waste watertreatment. This has performancelimitations and may not remove sufficientamounts of polluting material to asuitable level to meet discharge consentsor allow water recycling.

KWI biological treatment systems aredesigned generally for particular casesof industrial effluent treatment whereconventional solutions are not applicableor are inappropriate.

Combinations of primary physical-chemical pre-treatment and continuousbioreactors or SBR systems have beensuccessfully used in many difficult cases.

Biological sludge clarification & thickening ...Sometimes traditional settlement clarificationafter the bioreactors can be quite difficultand unstable. The reason for this varies -high concentration of salts in the effluent,particularly ‘light’ biomass, de-nitrification inthe secondary clarifiers, sludge bulking or ahost of other reasons.

Dissolved air flotation is a good alternativeto sedimentation in these cases. It allows theuse of significantly higher biomassconcentration in the bioreactors savingconstruction costs, volume and, therefore,space.

Excess biomass is also removed in the formof sludge in the biological treatment stage toallow further biomass growth. The thickeningof this sludge before de-watering is anothercommon application for DAF technology.

KWI’s Sedifloat™ clarifier is designedprimarily for biological sludgeclarification and thickening applications.Combining settlement and flotation, aspecific hydraulic design and sludgerecovery facility allows a deep sludgeblanket to be built up for optimumclarification and better sludgethickening. A floated sludge consistencyof up to 6% is currently achieved withsmall amounts of flocculant being onlyoccasionally used to cover peakhydraulic and solids loadings.

Fine clarification & water polishing ...

Tertiary treatment or ‘polishing’ applicationsare more and more necessary to improvefinal effluent quality after biological treatmentfor either discharge or recycling.Phosphorous precipitation and additional‘hard’ COD removal is also a growingneed.

The KWI Sandfloat DAFFI clarifier removes finesuspended solids utilising flocculation,dissolved air flotation clarification anddouble media sand filtration in one unit,ensuring the highest efficiency coupled witheconomical and simple operation.

For smaller flows, KWI also supplies the KS-Filter™, a continuous back-washinggravity sand filter using an airlift pump to liftdirty sand from the bottom to the sandwashing chamber at the top.

Potable & process water clarification ...Traditional methods of producing potableand high quality process water involveseparate primary clarification and filtrationstages to remove organic and inorganiccontaminants.

With the KWI Sandfloat™ clarifier, both canbe combined in one compact unit andsuccessfully employed for municipal orindustrial use, especially in cases wherehigh suspended solids concentration in theraw water occur. This is the case whensurface water containing algae or otherorganic and inorganic materials, givingoccasional or permanent turbidity, is treated.

The combination of DAF clarification, withthe capacity to remove significant amountsof solids, along with fine double mediasand filtration, giving excellent filtrationquality in a single clarifier, is a reliable andeconomical solution for these applications.
