WELCOME to SDEMPED 2017

On behalf of the SDEMPED 2015 Organizing Committee, I would like to

welcome you all to Tinos, Cyclades, Greece for the 11th edition of the IEEE

International Symposium on Diagnostics for Electric Machines, Power

Electronics and Drives (SDEMPED 2017).

It is really a great honor and a pleasure as well, to have the privilege to host

SDEMPED in Greece, and especially on this island. SDEMPED was

established as the only international symposium entirely devoted to the

diagnostics of electrical machines, power electronics and drives. Having

started in 1997 in Carry-le-Rouet (France), under the leadership of Professor

Gérard-André Capolino and Professor Giuseppe Buja, SDEMPED is now a

regular biennial event mainly organized in Europe. Very successful recent

editions have been held in Vienna (Austria) in 2005, Cracow (Poland) in 2007,

Cargèse (France) in 2009, Bologna (Italy) in 2011, Valencia (Spain) in 2013

and Guarda (Portugal) in 2015.

For the 2017 edition, SDEMPED has received the financial co-sponsorship of

the IEEE Power Electronics Society, the IEEE Industry Applications Society

and the IEEE Industrial Electronics Society.

Greece has been chosen for the 2017 edition of the symposium, and Michigan

State University as well as the University of Patras are in charge for its

organization.

The SDEMPED 2017 Organizing Committee wishes you a very successful

Symposium. Enjoy Greece, the Cyclades, and this island, enjoy SDEMPED

2017 and join us to make SDEMPED 2017 a memorable event!

Tutorial : Diagnostics of processes and machines in mining industry

Mining industry is related to various processes and machines that support

these operations. Excavation, drilling, bolting, transport (cyclic or

continuous), crushing, milling are very unique processes and some

knowledge is required to evaluate their effectiveness and correctness.

Modern mining processes are equipped with complex machines, often with

mechatronic devices. Reliability of the process requires proper operation of

machines. Again, complexity of the diagnostic problem depends on the

machine, however, some common issues might be extracted. Overheating,

too high current consumption, too high or modified vibration/acoustic

response of the system are just the most classical examples. From diagnostic

perspective several challenges should be highlighted: very poor SNR, non-

Gaussian noise, complex structure of raw data due to complexity of the

system, time-varying system and consequently – time varying properties of

diagnostic data, load/speed dependent features, unique character of

process/machine without good condition reference. From signal processing

point of view segmentation, detection, modelling, analysis, separation,

extraction of signals and selection, aggregation, normalization,

transformation, projection, fusion, statistical modelling etc. of diagnostic data

is used. Dingle channel data as well as multiple channels of the same variable

type or various physical parameters are used for condition monitoring.

All mentioned issues bring us a lot of fascinating research problems that

could be clearly seen only in real world systems.

Define state of the art in diagnostics of processes and machines in mining

industry

Process and machines diagnostics – examples from various mining

Key Challenges in process and machines diagnostics

Keynote Address: “Synchronous Motors Condition Monitoring, challenges

and pitfalls”

Synchronous motors are used in applications where a fixed speed is desired,

are often found in high power applications, where they are preferred over

induction motors due to their higher efficiency. Thus SM represent large

investments and typically drive processes where downtime results in

significant capital losses. This is why detecting faults at an early stage helps

avoiding catastrophic failures and it is beneficial in the scheduling of

maintenance actions.

There are various physical quantities that can be monitored and analyzed to

ascertain motor condition, such as temperature, vibration, fluxes and

currents. The value of temperature monitoring is very limited due to its

localized nature and slow response. Condition monitoring based on vibration

analysis is often challenging in the case of SM in the industrial environment.

This is due to the following facts: high stiffness of the machine, pronounced

background noise and complex electro-mechanical interactions, which

modulate and mask the signals of interest. As an alternative, flux sensors are

good indicators of SM failures but are limited by safety and accessibility

issues. Practice has shown that failures such as inter-turn short circuits and

damper bar problem are difficult to spot at an early stage.

Objectives

To cover the following points

Failures statistics in Synchronous machines

Physical understanding. Why are difficult to detect common faults in

synchronous motors?

Inter-turn short-circuit in the rotor field winding and damper bar

problem detection

Motors fed by power converters

Keynote Address: “Considerations for fault tolerant electrical machines

and reliability aspects”

The keynote presentation is devoted to the main aspects for the

development of high performance electrical machines for fault tolerant

drives and applications. The main methodologies concern the electro-

magnetic and thermal design and optimization procedures developed in

order to achieve an optimal development of such machine drive topologies

while enabling fault withstand and increased reliability. The methodologies

presented are illustrated by considering high performance, fault tolerant

electrical machines in aerospace drive application examples. Considerations

on reliability and life-time consumption and degradation will also be given.
