principles for standardization
1. Pairs analysis used as the basis for the adjustment
of marks.
2. No adjustments beyond 10% will be accepted unless
under exceptional circumstances.
3. Qualitative data must be used to support the
statistical findings.
4. Balance between statistical and educational
probability.
5. The raw marks of the current examination must be
compared to the raw marks of the past years years.

NORM TIMES FOR MARKING
Overview
• The National Senior Certificate (NSC) examinations are written after
twelve years of formal schooling.
• signify the end of the Further Education and Training band.
• Candidate must complete the programme requirements for Grade
10, 11 and 12, separately.
Requirements for the NSC For a candidate to obtain a National Senior Certificate he/she must:
(a) complete the programme requirements for Grades 10, 11 and 12 separately
and obtain the distinct outcomes and associated assessment standards for
all three years; and
(b) comply with the internal assessment requirements for Grades 10, 11 and 12
and the external assessment requirements of Grade 12;
(c) achieve 40% in three subjects, one of which is an official language at Home
Language Level;
(d) achieve 30 % in three subjects; and
(e) provide full evidence in the school–based assessment component in the
subject failed.

SUBJECT REQUIREMENTS
• Seven subjects = 4 compulsory + 3 choice subjects
– 4 compulsory subjects: 2 X Official Lang + Maths / Maths Lit + LO
• One Language = HL
• Other Lang = FAL or HL
• One of the 2 Lang = LoLT
– 3 other subjects: any 3 from list of approved NCS subjects
• Max. of 2 Languages = Official and/or non-official
• May offer one non-DoE examined subject in place of one NCS subject
• Provisos
– Additional subjects
• Offer for all 3 years (Gr.10-12)
• Meet internal and external assessment requirements in each subject
– Only one Language per Language group
– A Language cannot be taken on different levels
– May not take both Mathematics and Mathematical Literacy
requirements

Message from the President, His
Excellency, JG Zuma
“I wish to congratulate all the Matrics who sat for their National Senior Certificate examinations in 2011. I’ll also like to draw special attention to those Matriculants who even though faced with adverse learning conditions, performed exceptionally well”
Further, the President sent his well wishes to those who did not pass, saying they should persevere until they have attained their educational goals

the class of 2011 1. The class of 2011 can be referred to as the true children of democracy -
started their schooling post 1994 (Grade 1 in 2000).
2. The class of 2011 has experienced twelve years of schooling under a democratic government when the education system and the amalgamation of the 17 departments of education became fairly stable.
3. The class of 2011 benefitted from assessment and examination material of the last three years because they are the fourth group to seat for the National Senior Certificate Examination.
4. The class of 2011 was exposed to the three different curriculum reviews. These are:
I. Curriculum 2005 II. Revised National Curriculum Statement (RNCS) III. The changed Life Sciences content which was introduced in 2009 at grade
10.
