FUN FACT: Lance—Crackers — In 1913, Phillip Lance was repaid a debt with 500 pounds of peanuts. He began roasting and selling them on the Square in uptown Charlotte with great sucess and “the House of Lance” was born. A competing company sold a scalloped-edged cookie called a Token. Unable to buy the rights, Mr. Lance created his own sandwich cookie with the name NEKOT — token spelled backwards. It just so happened that the successful Charlotte Trolley ran right by the Lance factory on South Boulevard.
