Letter From the Editor

On The Cover: Rob Massari is restoring this ‘64 Spyder he obtained from Skip a year or so ago. He is installing a ‘65 140hp engine and getting the car in tip-top shape. Looks good. Can’t wait to have him drive it to a meeting!

(see Letter... on page 6)

I hope you were able to attend our last meeting. We had

seven members which was a bit on the light side. As usualthere was lots of car talk prior to the meeting formallystarting. Tony, and others, pointed out that I got the yearof all the cars wrong in the last newsletter. Sarah has a’63, Harry has a ’62, and Roger has a ’67 (well at least I’mconsistent - consistently wrong!). Sorry about that.

As mentioned in the last newsletter, Tony went to pick upthe literature donated by Dave Gomberg of San Franciscoand deliver it to Dave Newell. This turned out to be a lot ofMilestone Car Society material, a couple of Corvair books(Corvair Decade and Corvair Affair) and Mercedes brochures(not worth much). Milestone Car Society was a groupstarted by Richard Langworth who previously startedCORSA (the surviving entity is The Milestone Car Societyof California). Mr Gomberg use to have a ’65 Corvair con-vertible which he sold in the ‘70s. Marc was wondering if itis the same one as he current owns? He got it from hisfather who bought it used about that same time in DailyCity which is close to Glomberg’s house. You never know.

Rob Massari sent in a couple of picture of his ’64 Spyder(the car is on the cover and the engine is shown below)that he has been working on.

How do you like using the internal gas tank screen filter for the crankcase breather filter? Rob thinks it looked ok. He'll have to see howwell it works.

Minutes of the Last MeetingSeptember 4, 2014

The meeting was called to order

around 7:30 by President TonyRichards. There were seven membersand no guests this evening. Becauseof the picnic last month, there was nomeeting so no minutes to approve thistime. Tony pointed out errors I made inthe last newsletter. I got the year wrongon the cars at the picnic.

Treasurer’s Report: Fred was not herebut the back balance stood at $3223as of August 31.

Membership: One new member, RayWelter, since our July meeting. Wel-come! Harry put together a letter intro-ducing the Club and offering a free emailnewsletter. This will be sent to North-ern California CORSA members thatare not (as yet) SFBA members. Sethwill compile the list so Harry can sendthem out. A copy of the proposed let-ter was reviewed and commented onby the attendees. This is an attemptto increase our membership by show-ing the value to Corvair people thatmight not know about us.

New Business: Marc gave us an up-date on his car’s restoration. It is cur-rently at Foss Upholstery in Alamedawhere they will be doing any neces-sary body work (mainly window pillars)and the upholstery. Seth mentionedthat if they replace any metal parts, those parts should be painted to pro-tect them (especially the back sideswhich are impossible to get to later).Rustolium Red Primer is a good prod-uct for this. Marc expected the totalcost to approach $15k.Harry mentioned that there was a Ya-hoo video comparing Corvair withPontiac Fiero. Specifically this com-pared a ’67 Corvair Convertible with an’88, 4 cylinder Fiero. This was from acollectable point of view since each hasits own loyal fan base.

Old Business: Tony drove to SF to pickup the Corvair related material DaveGomberg was giving away (as reportedlast month). He brought the materialto Dave Newell who is always inter-ested in classic car literature.

Events: Seth reported on the Conven-tion in Tacoma Washington. This wassmall (as all West Coast conventionsseem to be) and held in an urban area. The host hotel was a long walk (or shorttransit ride) from the LeMay Auto Mu-seum where most of the events wereheld. Less than 25 cars were enteredin the concourse event but the car dis-play, a People’s Choice, was muchlarger with at least 15 FC’s (this con-vention was sponsored byCorvanatics). The autocross was onThursday held at the BremertonMotorsports Park (about 30 miles awayacross the Tacoma Narrows bridge). Itwas a fun convention and the host ho-tel was quite nice. Seth towed his racecar. A long tow even with a stop-over inGrants Pass, Oregon. Both Seth andhis wife, Barbara had booths at theswap meet. Barbara, who sold jewelry, had a sign saying “Most EverythingLess than Corvair Parts”. The vendor

area ended a day early (on Thursday)giving vendors all day Friday to par-take in the other events. Next year’sConvention will be Knoxville, Tn andthen Springfield, Il the year after. The Fan Belt Toss is coming up theend of October. Seth and Skip, at least, are intending to go. This is about an 8hour drive. For us the most preferredroute is to take Hwy 5 down to Gormanand then take Hwy 138 east throughLancaster/Palmdale over to Hwy 15 andthen down to San Bernardino whereyou can catch Hwy 10 east to PalmSprings. This route avoids going throughPasadena which a nightmare at com-mute time. The Fan Belt Toss is al-ways a fun event and there are lots ofthings to do in the area. The uniquerotating tram to Mt San Jacinto is es-pecially enjoyable (bring a jacket, theremay be snow up there!).Seth and Hal went to the Driven Car &Bike Show in San Jose. Seth towedhis race car and Hal drove hisRampside. Ken couldn’t make it thisyear.

Tech Session: Harry volunteered tohost a Tech Session at his house inDublin. This will be either Oct 4th or

the 11th (note this has been subse-quently finalized on the 11th! - Clark). The topic of interest will be “Brakes”this time and there will be a BBQ after.Should be fun.

Tech: The subject of magnesium fanscame up (apparently there is a YouTubevideo showing one on fire lighting upthe neighborhood!). These were usedon the ’64 and later Corvairs. OriginallyChevy planned to make these out ofplastic but interaction with batteryfumes caused the plastic to out-gassome toxic vapors so they changed toMg. These are coated to prevent cor-rosion. If you get a chip in yours or

Minutes... somehow expose the bare metal besure to coat this with something(maybe a clear coat?) or you will see awhite powder forming in short order.Marc mentioned that he suspects poorgrounding to be the cause of his gasgauge issues. Seth mentioned that onLate model Corvairs the dash is prima-rily grounded by a special bracket onthe left side. If this particular bolt isloose or missing then other routes pro-vide an alternate, but poorer, path toground effecting the gauges and lights. If you notice the lights on your dashare rather dim, check this ground con-nection to be sure its solid.Seth mentioned that he saw an ad inthe Penny Saver for BMW 320i wheels& tires - 5 for $100. Some BMW wheels

are very similar to Corvair (bolt circle isabout 1/2 mm different) so he went andchecked them out. They turned out tobe TSX wheels which are a specialbreed. You can still get tires for these, but at a cost. Coker has them for $500+each! Seth decided to pass.

Swap & Sell: Tony mentioned the ‘61Monza Coupe (see Classifieds) was aparticularly rare find (3-speed with astraight shifter). Some funky aftermar-ket seat covers.

Respectfully submitted,Clark Calkins, secretary
