On The Cover: Ray Welter recently picked up this nice ‘64 Spyder. He already has a ‘62 that he was going to fix up, but hecould buy this Spyder from a friend for less than he was going to have to spend on his ‘62. And it’s in great shape. So he nowhas two Corvairs. It’s funny how thery multiply. Welcome to the club!

(see Letter... on page 3)

I hope everyone enjoyed our Annual SFBA/Valley Pic-

nic as much as I did. I arrived a bit early to try andsecure a couple of nice tables for our use. But evengetting there a bit before 10:00 am was not enough. Myfavorite tables (the two at the end with great views onthe lakes and parking lot) were already “taken”. In factthere were only two tables in this section that were avail-able. Fortunately they were decent tables over lookingthe parking lot (soon to become Corvair Car Show) and,if you stood up, you could also see the lakes. On thebright side these both had newer BBQs that made start-ing the coals easier (they could be turned so face thebreeze if desired). Not too bad. I unloaded my stuff to“occupy” these tables and they settled in with my cof-fee and donuts.

When I arrived, most tables were already “taken”.

Just as I was beginning to question if I had the correctdate, Paul showed up (around 10:45). As seems to hap-pen every year, people start arriving around 11:30 as Iam getting the coals fired up. First one Corvair, thenanother, and another... In all five or six Corvairs showedup (evenly split earlies and lates).

The attendance this year was quite good. Even without some of ourusual attendees (Ed & Faye, Fred & Marlene, and others) I counted18 people. For the first time I can remember there were more SFBA

than Valley folks. Several peoplebrought extra lounge chairs whichworked out well.

In the end we finished off about 15burgers, 10 dogs, and a tri-tip accom-panied by several salads, pies, veggietrays, cookies, and a wonderful pump-kin bread. I manned the burger BBQand Seth took care of the tri-tip on theother BBQ. This worked well. For surenobody left hungry. You will find sev-eral pictures on pages 6 - 8.

Just as we were leaving, Paul had adead battery in his Corvette. I tried tojump start his car but the battery wasso dead that it just wouldn’t do any-thing (no click, no nothing). Paul calledAAA and within 15 minutes the truckarrived (a world record response time Iam sure). He had to use two batteriesin series (that’s 24 volts) to get the carstarted. I hope Paul made it home okay!

Thanks to Tony, we have three newmembers this month. They decided toswitch from “Charter Members” to “As-sociate Members”. Thanks Tony andwelcome Terry Hoffer, Bernard Roxx, and Gene Keller!

This month you will find another “CarTalk” column by Tony. This is very help-ful as I am sure everybody gets tired ofreading what I write. I want to encour-age everyone to send in material forthe newsletter. Especially pictures. After all it is Your Club!

Our next meeting will be a Tech Ses-sion at Harry's house in Dublin. Thetheme this time will be on de-flashingCorvair heads for better, more even, cooling. This is an important subjectas you will find out It should be inter-esting! Members of Valley are certainlywelcome as are family and friends. There will be plenty. As usual a BBQwill follow the demonstrations and therewill be coffee and donuts (if you getthere early enough that is). The sched-uled starting time is 10:00 am.

CAR TALKby Tony Richards

I don't watch television. Not network

TV anyway. I usually rent a disc fromNetflix. Some series I have watched this pastyear include 'Six Feet Under'. The se-ries opens with Nathaniel Fisher, amortician, getting killed when his newCadillac hearse gets broadsided by abus. The rest of the show depicts mem-bers of the Fisher family, who run theirfuneral home in Pasadena. The seriestraces these characters' lives over thecourse of five years.

Not really any cool cars in this one.

Another series I watched was 'Dexter',a television series set in Miami, cen-ters on Dexter Morgan, a forensic tech-nician specializing in blood splatterpattern analysis for the fictional MiamiMetro Police Department, who leads asecret parallel life as a vigilante serialkiller, hunting down murderers whohave slipped through the cracks of thejustice system.

Again, not really any cool cars.

Recently a TV series I found on Netflixwas 'Fargo', seasons 1 & 2. If you eversaw the movie of the same name, Fargois a dark comedy crime thriller, filmwritten, produced, edited, and directedby the Coen Brothers. It stars FrancesMacDormand as a pregnant Minnesotapolice chief investigating roadside ho-

micides that ensue after a strugglingOldsmobile car salesman, played byWilliam H. Macy, hires two criminalsto kidnap his wife in order to extort ahefty ransom from his wealthy father-in-law.

In Fargo, season 1 of the TV series,Billy Bob Thornton stars. Set in Janu-ary 2006, the season follows drifterLorne Malvo (Billy Bob Thornton) whostops at a hospital following a car ac-cident and influences local mild-man-nered insurance salesman LesterNygaard with his violent and deceptiveways. Their meeting sets forth a se-ries of murders throughout the city.Meanwhile, Deputy Molly Solversonand Officer Gus Grimly attempt to solveseveral crimes across the state theybelieve may be linked to Malvo andNygaard.

Not really any cool cars in this show, either.

Then I order up Fargo, season 2 of theTV series, a prequel to the events inseason 1, takes place in themidwestern United States in March1979. It follows the lives of a youngcouple—Peggy and Ed Blumquist —as they attempt to cover up the hit-and-run and subsequent murder of RyeGerhardt, the son of Floyd Gerhardt, matriarch of the Gerhardt crime family.During this time, state trooper LouSolverson and sheriff Hank Larsson

(well played by Ted Danson), investi-gate three murders linked to Rye.

Now for the cool car part: Peggy wasdriving a light metallic blue 1965 CorvairMonza coupe when she struck RyeGerhardt as he crossed the road aftermurdering the third of three people.Sadly, Peggy's husband Ed, trying to'cover up' the damage to the Corvairthat occured when Peggy hit Gerhardt, deliberately runs the Corvair into a tree. But the Gerhardt family goon figures itout by matching a piece of broken head-light lens found at the scene of the hit-and-run with the headlight on theCorvair at the body shop.

Ed and Peggy Blumquist are not verysmart people; other than the fact thatthey own a Corvair.

The story revolves around the Corvair. It is featured in most of the episodes!

2016 SFBA/Valley Picnic & “Car Show”- by Clark and Others

Here is a beautiful view of then lakes. The water level looks tobe fairly high. You can’t see here, but there were boating and

fishing going on.

The “condiment table” had all of the fixings for the burgers andhot dogs. Off to the side were several salads, veggie trays,

and desserts.

For those that think that I don’t get to eat. Between foodrequests I grabbed a burger & hot dog. Can’t have just one!

Seth is talking with Harry, Roger, Walt and his wife (just offthe picture unfortunately). As you can see it was a verypleasant day. The initial cloud cover burned off by noon.

Here are a few pictures of our Annual

SFBA/Valley Picnic at Quarry LakesPark in Fremont. It was an exception-ally cool day for August. The initial over-

cast gave way to partial sun by after-noon. All-in-all very pleasant. While Iwas manning the BBQ someone else(I forgot whom - sorry) was taking the

pictures. Both of the piknicers andCorvairs in the lot. Thanks!

Tony standing by his ride this afternoon. Well at least it’s aChevy.

Corvairs are starting to line up. If only we had a way to reserve a section of the lot all of our cars could be together. hemm,

Walt Anderson’s nice ‘64 convertible. Notice the rear hood hasbeen raised for added cooling.

Harry’s ‘62 convertible. Love the license plates!

Roger’s nice late model coupe. Greart paint job! Just another view of the lot.

Walt moved the battery to the front. Note the cut-off switch sohe can disconnect the battery for storage.

I am getting ready to leave and Paul needs a jump as hisbattery went dead. Some how the ignition was left on.

To get to Harry’s, take Foothill/San Ramon Rd off of Hwy 580 and go North one block. Make a left turn at the light on Dublin Blvd

and go three blocks. Turn right at the stop light on Silvergate Dr. Go about nine blocks and turn left on Creekside Dr. Harry’shouse is a block and a half on the left (three houses past Wildcat Ct next to an un-built parcel).
