Northern Swatara Creek Watershed AssociationKen Ninkovich, President309 Sweet Lake Arrow Road, Pine Grove, PA 17963(570) 345-0220Bob Evanchalk, [email protected] Swatara Cooperative Trout Nursery, operated by the NorthernSwatara Creek Watershed Association, produces and stocksBrook, Rainbow, Brown and Golden Rainbow trout. The majorityare stocked in the Upper and Lower little Swatara Creek, but over2,000 fish were stocked in Sweet Arrow Lake and the mainbranch of Swatara Creek in the borough of Pine Grove. Everyyear, about 70 twenty-inch plus long ‘Lunker’ Rainbow trout arestocked in Sweet Arrow Lake by the nursery. The main branch of Swatara Creek was, just a few years ago, considered hopelessly polluted. Through the efforts of theSwatara Creek Watershed Association, the Schuylkill Conservation

District, the Pennsylvania DEP, EPA and many other agencies, ithas been converted to a stockable stream enjoyed by many. The Watershed Association has developed a Special NeedsAccess Area located near the Sweet Arrow Lake County ParkClubhouse on Clubhouse Road off Rt 443 in memory of Rolland“Ronny” Wiggins. Fishermen with special needs may park withinfeet of the waterfront trail. Canoes and kayaks can be launchedat the Special Needs Access as well.

Schuylkill Headwaters AssociationBill Reichert, PresidentPO Box 1385, Pottsville, PA [email protected] Schuylkill Headwaters Association (SHA) was founded in 1998with the mission “to promote the environmental integrity of theSchuylkill River, its tributaries, and the watershed that lies within theboundaries of Schuylkill County.” SHA works to protect and enhancethe headwaters of the Schuylkill River by educating residents aboutthe Schuylkill River and by implementing projects to reduce andcontrol pollution. There are various sources of water pollution withinthe headwaters of the Schuylkill River, including sedimentation andsewage; but the main impairment is abandoned mine drainage (AMD). AMD discharges are often acidic and contain the metals iron, manganese, and aluminum. This affects over 125 miles of streamswithin the Schuylkill River watershed in Schuylkill County. SHA partnerswith numerous organizations and state and federal agencies to

restore the headwaters of the Schuylkill River. With the help of thesepartners, SHA has received over $4 million in grant funding toconstruct seven AMD treatment systems, conduct water monitoringthroughout the watershed, implement other restoration projects, andto create a Restoration Plan for the watershed. This plan outlinesthe water quality impairments and prioritizes the treatment of AMDdischarges, with the goal of bringing the Schuylkill River back to lifemile by mile.

SHA also organizes outreach initiatives to educate the public aboutlocal water quality issues and remediation projects. Since 2009,SHA has carried out five Appalachian Regional ReforestationInitiative (ARRI) tree plantings in an effort to restore abandonedmine land to a native forest. Through these projects, volunteers haveplanted over 12,000 tree seedlings on mined land. SHA has alsohosted two National Wild And Scenic Film Festivals to educate thecommunity about environmental issues and attract new members. The Senior Environment Corps (SEC) of Schuylkill County’s Retired

Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) works closely with SHA to monitorwater quality throughout the Schuylkill River watershed. Throughthese and other programs, SHA works to educate and engage thecommunity about water quality concerns and the remediation workunderway in their watershed.
