Thank you for being a Team Captain for this year's Virtual Green 5K! Participating in the Virtual Green5K as part of a team has many benefits. First and foremost, it’s FUN! What a great opportunity tospend time with family, friends, colleagues, neighbors, and/or classmates as a team and support thelive-saving mission of transforming lives through organ, eye and tissue donation. Teams are also a great way to honor the lives of donors, celebrate the health of recipients, andprovide hope for those who continue to wait for a life-saving transplant. The role of Team Captain is an important one. You become the chief motivator and coordinator foryour team. You also help to set fundraising and recruitment goals. We know it can be a big task so thistoolkit is filled with resources to help you succeed. Your time and commitment helps to make thisrace a success year after year and we are so grateful for Team Captains like you. HAVE FUN. This is a fun, family-friendly eventfor the whole community. We want everyone tocome out and enjoy themselves. YES, we wantto INSPIRE others, but we also want to have agreat time celebrating organ, eye and tissuedonation.
Team Recruitment & Motivation Tips
START EARLY. Get to work early setting objectives and deadlines for your team’s size and fundraisinggoals. We encourage you to use your personal fundraising page through the GREEN 5K registration pageto help with this. Make sure to customize your page with your story and photographs. Your story ispowerful. We encourage you to use it.
ASK, ASK, ASK. Ask anyone andeveryone to join your team. Themore people involved, the morefun we have! Not to mention morefunds raised!

BUILD A PYRAMID. Askeach person you recruitfor your team to invitethree more people tojoin. You’ll find your teamgrowing in no time!
SOCIAL MEDIA. Use the power of socialmedia! This can be key in spreading yourmessage. You can reach your circle far andwide. Even if family and friends can’t join,many will want to support you from afar.
ENCOURAGE. Send weekly e-mails to touch base with your team and to maintain momentum. If ateammate quickly meets or exceeds their fundraising goal, share it with the group in an e-mail or onFacebook. Don’t be afraid to create a little competition among your team members. Everyone will workharder and you will increase team enthusiasm leading up to the event.
PERSONALIZE YOUR ASK. Send emails askingfor monetary donations with links to yourpersonal fundraising page. Remember toshare your personal connection to donationand why you are supporting the cause.Encourage your team to do the same.
THANK YOU NOTES. You can’t say thank you too many times. Thank your team membersand monetary donors. Encourage your team members to do the same. Be timely in yourthanks. Make everyone feel appreciated and let them know their hard work is paying off asyou work towards meeting your goal. If donors feel appreciated, they are more likely to giveagain and increase their gift!
TEAM GOAL: Keep an eye on your personal andteam goals. As you see your fundraising totalsincrease, consider raising your goals. The higheryour goal, the more people tend to donate.
TEAM PRIDE. Show the spirit ofyour team by creating customposters and signs to carry at theGREEN 5K. If honoring a donoror recipient, this is a great wayto share your loved ones story.
T-SHIRTS. Design your team t-shirtswith photographs, artwork, quotes,or memories in honor of a donor orrecipient.

As the leader of your team and a leader in ending the wait for organ transplants across the US, it isimportant for you to know and share the impact of fundraising. Funds raised for the GREEN 5K directlyimpact our community. Funds are used to honor our donors and their families for their life-saving andlife-enhancing gifts, support community outreach and education programs, as well as to help registermore donors each year. YOU are key to our success. Tips for Success: 1. Lead by example. Excitement is contagious! It’s important that your teammates feel your dedicationand excitement. Make them feel inspired to raise funds - and what better way of doing that than to startfundraising yourself. 2. Ask. As you did to recruit team members, ask anyone and everyone if they will donate to help youreach your fundraising goal. In most cases, people will donate their time and money simply because theywere asked. 3. Give Thanks. Thank those who contribute to your campaign with a personal letter or email. Let themknow how much you appreciate their donation and how it's helping you to reach your goal.4. Have FUN. They don't put the fun in FUNdraising for nothing. See the attached list of creative ways tomake fundraising fun and simple. It doesn't have to be scary! Who to Ask: Anyone is a potential donor so don't be afraid to ask. Review your list of contacts and ask people you seeeveryday. Don't forget to share WHY you are fundraising for this cause. Your personal connection willsurely make an impact and your friends, family, colleagues, and more will be honored to sponsor yourfundraising drive.

Fundraising Ideas
BAKE SALE. Nothing tastes sweeter than meetingyour fundraising goal. Whip up some delicioustreats to sell at work or outside a local store. Werecommend anything with GREEN icing.
GREEN 5K FUNDRAISING PAGE. You have the opportunity to develop and share your storywith family, friends and supporters. Using your personal fundraising page is a great way toseek donations for the cause and spread awareness about organ, eye and tissue donation.
SELL SPACE ON A T-SHIRT. Sell small blocks ofspace on a shirt you plan to wear to the race fora suggested $20 donation. Encourage donors towrite a tribute to you or in honor of a donor orrecipient.
FACEBOOK PHOTO AUCTION. Auction off yourprofile picture where family and friends canwin the chance to control your profile picturefor a week.
GAMES NIGHT FUNDRAISER.Whether its board games, cardsor trivia, family-friendly or adultonly, trivia nights can be a greatway to raise funds!
CHORES FOR CHARITY. Some organizations willsponsor your campaign in return for cleaning,serving, repairing, etc.! Check with local businessesto see if this is something they would like toparticipate in.
YARD SALE. Gather some friendsand start collecting all thoseunwanted items in search of a newowner. It’s a great way to clear theclutter and raise funds!
DRESS DOWN DAYS. Work with your company on hosting a “Dress Down” day whereemployees can pay $5 to dress causal for a day and the funds can go to your goal. A greatday to do this is Blue/Green day on April 21st for Donate Life Month!
CAR WASH. Helpwash cars and watchdollars flow into yourfundraising bank.
CHANGE JAR. When you empty your pockets at the end of the day, where does all your spare change go?Create a “Change for Change” jar in your house or office, encouraging yourself, friends, family and co-workers to donate spare change. This will add up!
PANCAKE BREAKFAST OR SPAGHETTI DINNER. Work with your local school or house ofworship to host a pancake breakfast or spaghetti dinner. With small out of pocket costs,you can charge $5 per person for a plate, increase your fundraising efforts and fill somebellies!
IOWA EVENTS CENTER CLEAN-UPOPPORTUNITY. Earn $250 to clean up after largescale events. Minimum of 15-20 volunteersneeded.

_____ Remind team members to log on to their fundraising pages to record all offline donations.
_____ Send thank you notes.
_____ Design team t-shirts and/or posters.
_____ Choose your rally point and time for race day and inform your team.
_____ Host a celebration event after the race.
_____ Thank your donors and those who helped you personally raise funds.
_____ Thank your team members for participating and for fundraising.
